Shownotes

I was watching Too Hot to Handle on Netflix recently when it hit me. The contestants on that show didn’t know what they were in for when they signed on and they had to learn totally different rules than they were expecting. People who jump into WordPress can feel the same way.

When jumping in to move your website from a builder like Wix, Kajabi, or ShowIt, do you really know what you’re getting into? Wordpress was designed to be a CMS - a client management system. Kajabi and other site builders like it were designed to be LMS - learning management systems. They don’t serve the same function, they’re not built the same, and they don’t have the same capabilities.

What do you really need to figure out before you dive into WordPress? In this episode I’ll outline a few things that you need to consider when getting started with WP.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Hello, hello, hello and welcome to episode six

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

of More Than a Brand Podcast y'all.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

This past week or so, I've actually had time to sit down and watch

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

some meaningless tv, connect with some people, expand a little bit.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I've just really been enjoying myself this week, but while I've been enjoying myself,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

and hanging out with some coworkers while we were having that water cooler talk.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And I really don't like that term cause nobody has a water cooler anymore.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But anyway, while we were just hanging out, chit-chatting, talking about

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

what we've been watching, , one of my closest work friends, her, um, partner

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

is currently well, had been watching the Murdoch, trials . And not only is

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

she watching the trial, she's watching the documentary, she she solve the case.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Okay, y'all . But then there's another coworker who he comes in

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

and he's telling us about the show he's been watching on Netflix, and

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

it's called Too Hot to Handle Y'all.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So, He was going on and on about the show and this pot of money and

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

how it was so much money if they follow the rules of the house.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But every time they broke the rules of the house, some of that money got subtracted.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So yesterday, me and my husband, I was like, let's check this show out.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Let's check out.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Too hot to handle now y'all.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I started at, uh, season four, so don't ask me about, first of all, I

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

didn't know it was that many seasons, so don't ask me about any seasons

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

prior, but we started at season four, you know, just tryouts, reality tv.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Most of the time in reality tv you don't have to watch all the

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

seasons to know what's going on.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So I got on season.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

and the premise of this show is you bring in these people that are

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

sexaholics and they're put into this house, and anytime they do a sexual

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

act, so money gets subtracted from the pot of money that is the prize.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So in this season, and I don't know if it's all the seasons are the same, and

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I only seen like three episodes, but in this season that I was watching,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

$200,000 was the prize money.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Now to get people on this show, They got put on on the show

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

basically under false, pre stances.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So they thought they were going on a show called Wild Love.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And from what I gathered from watching the episodes, they

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

thought they were going on a show.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

They was gonna do some stuff to fall in love with somebody else.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

They didn't know that they were coming on this show because their sexaholics or.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

More promiscuous than society would like them to be and to be

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

challenged to not do anything sexual.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

They didn't know that.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But anyway, so they got, I wanna say it is of them, five males, five females.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And so they're meeting with, they have Mario Lopez there.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

He's like, we're doing this show.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Thank you for joining.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Wild Love this, that, and the third, they're all excited.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And then, , he drops the bomb.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That this ain't really, ain't what the show is about.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It is about not having sex, not doing sexual acts, not being intimate.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So needless to say, the 10 contestants, they were not prepared cuz in their

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

mind, they were already talking about who they gonna hook up with,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

who they're most attracted to.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So they had already prepared themselves to be able to do whatever they wanna do.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Like they were out in the streets doing whatever, sleeping with

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

whoever, kissing, whoever.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It is what it is.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That's what their mind was prepared for.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

They were not prepared to show restraint when it comes to

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

things that they do all the time.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

One of them usually said, I haven't had sex in two weeks.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It's been so long I didn't prepare for this.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I should have did it before I got on a plane.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So that person wasn't prepared physically.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Okay, so the first night every time someone kisses someone,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

you get some money to deduct it.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So on the first night it was three.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

couples, I'll just call them couples, even though they just met, it was

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

three sets of people who'll do that.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Three sets of people who kissed each kiss was $3,000, 3000 times three, $9,000.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So in the first night, First 24 hours, $9,000 was deduct up from the

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

$200,000 that they could have won

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

and I promise you, I'm, I'm getting to the point with this.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So the first one is kind of like a freebie.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You don't know what you don't know.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

They didn't know how much they was gonna be charged, but they

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

didn't know the rules of the game.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

. So the Lana, who is Lana's, like an Alexa, a Siri, she's an artificial intelligence.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

She's everywhere around the villa that they're living in.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And Lana was like, look, y'all been messing y'all, it's 24 hours.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Y'all already lost $9,000.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Now the stakes are higher.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

We are doubling the fines on everything that y'all do that's sexual.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

. So that $3,000 kiss y'all had today, tomorrow is gonna be 6,000.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So mind ya manners.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And there was this one guy on there, I think his name is

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

James, and he, he is focused.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Once he found out it was money involved, James is not trying to do anything

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

up to the point that I've seen.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

He's not trying to do anything to jeopardize the money.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So he's like, look, I am nominating myself as the sex.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I am making sure y'all are not doing anything to lose any extra money.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So all through that night, James was roaming around, , doing rounds, trying

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

to make sure people stayed outta trouble.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And he did his due diligence.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

However, people going, people.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And there was one set of people, a couple who ended up.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

causing the group $18,000 and the other set of people cost

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

the group $6,000 cuz they kiss.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But at that point y'all already knew what the stakes were.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You already have been worn with the first day and now the second day.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You already knew what the stakes were, so they made a conscious decision to just do

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

whatever they wanted to do, even though they had the information they needed.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And I say all this because when you're dealing with WordPress,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

a lot of times people don't know what they're getting into.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

They're like, the people on this show, too hot to handle.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

originally, they're thinking they're getting into something called Wild Love.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Originally you think you're getting into WordPress and it's gonna be similar to,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

let's say, a Squarespace or a Cajabi.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And even though there are some slight similarities, there are

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

quite a few differences and people are not prepared for it.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Because one, mentally they wasn't there.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Just like the people in the show.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Mentally, they were gonna be able to do what they wanted to do, but they

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

didn't have the knowledge to know that certain things is going to cost them.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Same with WordPress I'll use Kajabi because a lot of my clients.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Or like, I wanna go from Kajabi to WordPress.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And then I've heard people do vice versa, go from WordPress to Kajabi but the thing

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

is, the two, although you can compare them, they don't serve the same function.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

. So in one of the prior episodes, I told you that WordPress has been

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

around since, I wanna say 2003.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

They've been here for a hot minute.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But WordPress was created to be a C M S, meaning a client management system.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Whereas Kajabi is more of a learning management system.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So the primary purpose of Kajabi is to.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Sell courses, learning stuff, resources for your course.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Yes, it does have the capability to give you a landing page or a website

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

that's related to those courses.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

However, it does not have all of the capabilities of WordPress because

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

that's just not its core function.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And vice versa.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

WordPress is meant to be that client management, creating that user experience

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

on your website so that they can navigate through your website and access

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

the things that they need to access.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It does have the capability with an additional add-on or, plug in is what

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

WordPress calls them to integrate that learning management system.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So when you're getting into WordPress, you.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

mentally prepare yourself because it is not going to do exactly what you

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

need it to do if you don't understand what tools you need if you don't

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

understand the rules of WordPress.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Another thing that people forget are when they're jumping into WordPress is that

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

they forget that WordPress has several different options when it comes to

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

hosting, whereas if you choose something like Squarespace, Kajabi even show it.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

The hosting belongs to show it only it belongs to Wick, only to

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Squarespace, to Kajabi that there's only one place to host Kajabi.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

One place, the host show at Wicks whatever, website.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Design platform that you decide to use.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But when it comes to WordPress, there's so many options when it comes to who

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

and what platform you can host it on.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Now there's a few that I prefer.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I'm not a fan of Blue Host.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I know it's been with WordPress since 1999, taking over for the two thousands,

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

but Blue Host has a lot of issues that I find does not help my clients in

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

the long run is more of a hindrance.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Now, there are some, I personally love Flywheel.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I also like Kinta.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

But there's some hosting you have to do your research or ask a

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

designer or developer, which hosting sites do they prefer and why.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Some of them give you a backup and some of them don't.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

And I know I, I'm not trying to drag blue.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

, but in their documents it says that although they do periodic backups, they

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

recommend you integrate a plugin that will back up your site for you also.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

So don't solely depend on them, even though they're your hosting.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That's a little nuance.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You have to do research or ask someone that knows to help you make a decision

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

when it comes to jumping into word.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You don't wanna walk in to WordPress like these people on too hot to handle

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

throwing away money, $3,000 kisses because you didn't understand the

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

nuances and what needs to happen to be able to achieve the goal of your.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Another piece about WordPress that when you're getting into it, I highly.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Recommend you set aside a time either you, your va, your cto, someone

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

to go in and update those plugins.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Updating plugins are just like updating apps on your phone.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I know you heard me say it a million times.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

think about your iPhone, when a new iOS comes out, and I know

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

some people is like, I'm holding.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I don't know why people wanna hold out what you holding out for, but

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

people will hold out on the update.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

When you hold out on the update, the phone starts acting funny and be slowing down.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Things just be freezing up.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You don't know what's going on.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It's cause you held out on the update and that update was fixing those bugs

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

that they knew that was happening in your cell phone with WordPress.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

If those plugins don't get update, Or if you don't set aside the

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

time or hire someone to update the plugins for you, your website

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

will act just like that phone.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

You'll be running into issues and you won't even understand why.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Those are just a few of the things.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

That you need to think about when you're getting into WordPress.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

I love WordPress, but I want you to make sure you have a clear understanding

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

before you jump onto the WordPress boat.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

Jump into wild love thinking.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

It's one thing and it's really not.

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

As always, you can slide in my dms or ask me any questions if you

Lindsay Tramel-Jones:

have any, and I look forward to checking y'all out in episode seven.
