Welcome to 12-minute convos with Jesus Believers.
Speaker:God chose first to have a conversation with us, his creation. His truth spoken in one moment
Speaker:became an evergreen seed for our generation today. The power of a conversation is eternal.
Speaker:Our prayer is that this listening space brings growth and transforms your life forever.
Speaker:Good morning, Karen. How are you doing today?
Speaker:Very well, and you?
Speaker:I'm excellent, as can be. Thanks for asking.
Speaker:What part of the world are you in today?
Speaker:I'm in Sydney, Australia.
Speaker:All right, wonderful. So you're on the other side of the world from me, yeah?
Speaker:Thanks for connecting.
Speaker:So tell me about this journey of being married, one, to your sweetheart.
Speaker:You know, it's amazing that God can put someone in your life so young.
Speaker:I met my husband when I was 15.
Speaker:I mean, what I knew about life was just nothing,
Speaker:but God knew who I would need through all my years growing up and the support that I would need.
Speaker:Just to have someone that loves you and cares about you
Speaker:is the most beautiful gift that God can give you.
Speaker:You know, all these years, we've been good to each other.
Speaker:We've been kind to each other.
Speaker:And that's a very, very strong thing about marriage.
Speaker:You know, it's not to pick on each other and belittle each other,
Speaker:but to treat each other with respect and with dignity,
Speaker:because your husband or your wife is also a child of God.
Speaker:They also belong to Jesus, and God loves them, and God died for them.
Speaker:So, you know, you're not only married to a man that's your husband,
Speaker:but he's also God's child.
Speaker:And so you need to reverence that and respect that in him.
Speaker:So immediately, it feels as though the level of respect and love you have for others
Speaker:has allowed you to be somewhat of a kind person by force.
Speaker:Is that accurate?
Speaker:Yes, I agree, because, you know, kindness seems to be a dying art,
Speaker:because the Bible says in the last days,
Speaker:people will be lovers of men, lovers of themselves, more than lovers of men.
Speaker:And, you know, kindness is just, it's free.
Speaker:Whether you're rich, poor, any color, it doesn't matter.
Speaker:You can be kind.
Speaker:A smile is a gracious thing to give someone.
Speaker:And you just never know what your little act of kindness
Speaker:could mean to that other person.
Speaker:So I think kindness is a really big thing in life.
Speaker:How did you bump to know Jesus Christ?
Speaker:I was very blessed.
Speaker:Thank you, Jesus, that I met him when I was 12.
Speaker:I came from an abused home.
Speaker:And basically, the school announced that on Sunday,
Speaker:they would be giving the school hall out to these pastors
Speaker:to start a Sunday school.
Speaker:And I thought, oh, that's great, because I can go there,
Speaker:and at least I'm getting out the house away from my father.
Speaker:And I'll just, you know, tell him I'm going to Sunday school.
Speaker:Not knowing, you know, God's got these things set up for you.
Speaker:And the lady there, she said,
Speaker:does anyone need a friend that will never leave you
Speaker:and stay with you the rest of your life?
Speaker:And, you know, with all the abuse that was going on,
Speaker:I certainly needed a friend.
Speaker:And so I put my hand up, and she said that,
Speaker:you know, you can talk to him anytime,
Speaker:all the time, whenever you want.
Speaker:He will always be there.
Speaker:Even though he's invisible friend,
Speaker:he is your best friend,
Speaker:and he will always, always have your back.
Speaker:At 12 years old, that was the most beautiful gift
Speaker:I could ever have received,
Speaker:because it just, every time the pressure got too much,
Speaker:or I wasn't coping, I would talk to Jesus all the time.
Speaker:But how am I going to do this?
Speaker:Please help me, please help me.
Speaker:So it was wonderful to have met him so young.
Speaker:How have you seen your relationship evolve over time
Speaker:with Jesus?
Speaker:I mean, it just is amazing.
Speaker:I still talk to him all the time.
Speaker:My husband always says to me, who are you talking to?
Speaker:And I say, I'm talking to Jesus.
Speaker:I still talk to him all the time.
Speaker:I asked him all the time for help.
Speaker:He's so gracious to me.
Speaker:You know, whenever I need something, it just happens.
Speaker:He takes such good care of me.
Speaker:He's really been a father and companion.
Speaker:He's been everything in my life.
Speaker:And, you know, if you just stay with him through the thick,
Speaker:through the thin, because life has ups and downs,
Speaker:but you don't take it out on God and blame him.
Speaker:You hold fast to him and let him be your anchor.
Speaker:Your relationship will grow from strength to strength
Speaker:and from depth to depth.
Speaker:You will find that you will become so anchored in God
Speaker:that no matter what the world throws at you
Speaker:and what happens, your focus never change.
Speaker:You always know that your father loves you,
Speaker:that he's got your back
Speaker:and that he's always there to take care of you.
Speaker:Is it accurate to say the kindness that you were shown
Speaker:way back at that Sunday school
Speaker:and then the kindness you were shown
Speaker:through the relationship with your husband
Speaker:is what healed you into writing today?
Speaker:Interesting, yes.
Speaker:My books are about kindness, mostly about forgiveness,
Speaker:because I really believe that unless you forgive you,
Speaker:you just can't heal.
Speaker:Forgiveness is definitely the first thing
Speaker:that has to happen.
Speaker:But I do feel that God has opened things in my heart
Speaker:that have made me realize that it's not money.
Speaker:It's not about resources.
Speaker:It's just something that you can do.
Speaker:It's within you, being kind, being forgiving.
Speaker:God doesn't require things from you
Speaker:that are going to cost you physically,
Speaker:monetary and things like that.
Speaker:What he's requiring from you is in your capacity
Speaker:to already receive.
Speaker:And like me, I've had people come across my path
Speaker:that have enhanced my journey.
Speaker:And that's what God does.
Speaker:God is the great network.
Speaker:Oh my goodness, can God network?
Speaker:Look at us, we're talking across the world.
Speaker:God is a great network
Speaker:and he can put you with someone
Speaker:that is just going to help your life so much
Speaker:like he's done for me.
Speaker:What was the first book that you actually launched?
Speaker:My Journey to Enjoy My Life
Speaker:about my journey from freedom from abuse
Speaker:and how God restored to me life.
Speaker:Because when you come out of an abusive home,
Speaker:you're so used to living in shadows and hiding
Speaker:and trying to tiptoe around your abuser
Speaker:that you lose your own identity.
Speaker:And so when I left home, I didn't have any identity.
Speaker:I didn't know who Corinne Thompson was,
Speaker:what I like, what I don't like.
Speaker:I just wanted to make everybody else happy
Speaker:as long as I just could disappear.
Speaker:That was my first book, my Journey to Enjoy My Life.
Speaker:So you did the non-fiction first
Speaker:and then went to the fiction books, yeah?
Speaker:Yes, two non-fictions.
Speaker:I did another one, Encouragement for the Weary Soul,
Speaker:where just some good old fashioned advice
Speaker:based on scripture with some prayers
Speaker:and encouragement on subjects that we deal with today.
Speaker:And then I started doing the fiction
Speaker:where I started incorporating characters
Speaker:with problems coming from different backgrounds,
Speaker:how they doubt with their world,
Speaker:and when their world is all falling apart,
Speaker:how they doubt with it.
Speaker:But in the whole thread of the book
Speaker:is kindness and is forgiveness.
Speaker:I'm intrigued by James though,
Speaker:was his story similar to yours in terms of meeting Christ?
Speaker:The chances of James and I actually even being together,
Speaker:it's a billion to one
Speaker:because my husband was in the war in South Africa.
Speaker:So he was there for 10 years.
Speaker:So he suffered from PTSD with that.
Speaker:Then he got terrible anxiety.
Speaker:So he had his issues and I had my issues
Speaker:and only God could sort something out
Speaker:and make something beautiful out of all these issues.
Speaker:When I met him, he wasn't saved,
Speaker:but he saw Jesus in me
Speaker:because I was always talking to Jesus.
Speaker:And I would say to him,
Speaker:don't worry, God's gonna take care of us.
Speaker:God will help us.
Speaker:I started going to church and he,
Speaker:because he loved me, he just followed me everywhere.
Speaker:So he went to church too.
Speaker:And then she asked Jesus into his heart
Speaker:and had a whole beautiful encounter with the Lord,
Speaker:which really helped him with his trauma
Speaker:and the things he had to deal with.
Speaker:If you took a minute and just looked at yourself
Speaker:being grandmother, mother and wife,
Speaker:is there an emotional aspect
Speaker:that goes with tremendous sadness
Speaker:of you not being in that equation
Speaker:at some point in this lifetime?
Speaker:If I didn't forgive,
Speaker:because I was a very angry young lady,
Speaker:I was bitter, I was disappointed.
Speaker:I had so much shame.
Speaker:I had guilt.
Speaker:I had remorse.
Speaker:I mean, all the haves I had.
Speaker:If I had not forgiven
Speaker:and let go of the damage that my dad did to me
Speaker:and embrace the identity and identification with Jesus,
Speaker:I wouldn't have had a husband that loved me.
Speaker:I wouldn't have had two godly men
Speaker:who married two godly woman
Speaker:and have three godly Christian grandchildren.
Speaker:Because bitter people don't produce beautiful fruit.
Speaker:Angry people don't produce beautiful fruit.
Speaker:When you are full of animosity,
Speaker:bitterness, unforgiveness, anger,
Speaker:it festers and it festers and it festers.
Speaker:And over the years, you are not a happy camper.
Speaker:You don't come out and produce as a happy camper.
Speaker:You're miserable.
Speaker:You're always snapping, you're grumpy.
Speaker:And so therefore people don't wanna be around you.
Speaker:And eventually, even my father,
Speaker:he never changed.
Speaker:He died alone.
Speaker:But because I let Jesus into my life,
Speaker:the love of Jesus spread abroad in my heart
Speaker:and changed my whole mindset.
Speaker:So I became kind.
Speaker:I became a nicer person.
Speaker:Our love united and became stronger
Speaker:because if you're good to each other,
Speaker:you just get stronger.
Speaker:And then of course, you produce a home together
Speaker:and you introduce Jesus into your home.
Speaker:And my whole legacy has changed
Speaker:because of Jesus and because I let go of my past.
Speaker:For the person that's listening,
Speaker:that is probably in the same place you are back then,
Speaker:what would you say to them to encourage them?
Speaker:I would say to you that you need to hold on to God.
Speaker:You need to hold on to God
Speaker:with every fiber of your being and seek direction.
Speaker:Get help, get counseling.
Speaker:I mean, in today's world, you can talk to things.
Speaker:You can talk to people.
Speaker:In my world, this happened in the 70s, 60s and 70s.
Speaker:Life was very different then.
Speaker:Everything was under the carpet
Speaker:and no one told anybody anything.
Speaker:I really advise that you get some help.
Speaker:But know that God loves you.
Speaker:You're not being punished.
Speaker:He's not trying to put shame and guilt on you.
Speaker:None of these things are from God.
Speaker:It's the enemy that comes to steal, kill and destroy.
Speaker:So you really need to get help
Speaker:and really seek God's face
Speaker:and how he can help you get out of that situation.
Speaker:Okay, and I appreciate you passing by
Speaker:to have a conversation with me.
Speaker:In closing, is there anything else you'd like to share?
Speaker:I want to say that your past does not need to define you.
Speaker:Because you had a bad start,
Speaker:and I had a very bad start,
Speaker:it doesn't mean that I have to be that person.
Speaker:I can be a better person because of Jesus.
Speaker:Thank you very much.
Speaker:Again, a pleasure.
Speaker:I treasure Karen Thompson.
Speaker:Thank you for being on What Is Inspired
