Shownotes
Music is a universal language that can connect you to people around the world. Tim welcomes the multi-talented Daniel “D’Aych” Harris to the show. D’Aych is an accomplished producer and independent gospel/rap/rock artist from Milwaukee and founder of the Next Level Band.
Tim and D’Aych talk about the world of music and its impact, and explore its use as a communication tool. They discuss intentionality in music and how music is like a conversation where you need to give room for pause to let things sink in. They also explore the importance of humility to receive criticism and the discipline to stay focused and hone your craft.
Listen in as D’Aych talks about his time in solitary confinement and a new documentary that investigates the revocation of his voting rights.
Embrace the darkness to bring out the best in you.
Highlights:
05:42 I wound up being left at home a lot with the instruments. Music really became not only a second language but it became my best friend at that point.
11:13 He said, what you’re doing is good, but he said music is like a conversation. You don’t want to overstep your boundaries in the course of the conversation. You want to be able to say something, and then give room for the other person to say something.
15:57 I’m blessed to have a whole team of musicians that are better than me in my band. All the musicians in my band are better musicians than me and that makes me a better musician.
18:22 If you check not only what your purpose is, but the intention behind your purpose, it’ll help you to stay in the right lane. I found my lane by serving the community through various community initiatives.
28:18 I was developing that skill in a dark place. I think one of the most beautiful things, one of the most beautiful processes is the fact that you can look at a picture, but one of the old school ways of developing the picture was in a dark room. That’s what God did with my life. People see the full picture now but they don’t know that process happened in a dark room.
