Why rest isn't a moral failure — even when chronic illness or grief makes it feel like one

💛 Episode Summary:

If you live with chronic illness, grief, or a season that's left you running on empty, you know a very specific guilt — the one that shows up the moment you finally stop. In this solo episode, Melissa shares an honest, hard night that started with a genuine mistake and turned into a spiral of guilt for needing to rest and heal. Walking through three places this guilt shows up in her own life, she looks at what Scripture actually says about rest, and why needing it was never the failure.

🌿 In This Episode:

- The story behind the episode — a forgotten record button and the guilt that followed

- Why rest was never optional, from the very rhythm of creation itself (Genesis 2:2-3)

- The guilt that shows up around a monthly infusion treatment and a lost evening (Psalm 23:2)

- The comparison trap of watching everyone else's pace online (Matthew 11:28)

- A practical step for naming the guilt out loud instead of believing it

✨ Word of the Week: Held

Not held together by your own strength — held by Him, especially on the days you can't hold up anything else.

💭 Reflection Question:

Where in your life right now is guilt telling you that rest has to be earned — and what would it look like to let yourself be held instead?

Transcripts

[00:00:00] There's a voice a lot of us know if we live with chronic illness or grief, or if we're just running on empty this season. It's the one that shows up the second we stop, telling us we haven't earned the right to, that we don't get to rest until we've done enough to deserve it. I know that voice well.

[00:00:22] A few weeks ago, it showed up in the middle of something that should have just been an honest mistake, and it turned into one of the hardest nights I've had in a long time. Here's what happened. Welcome to Joy in Suffering, where faith meets the hard places. I'm your host, Melissa Winters. If you're walking through chronic illness, grief, or a hard season of life, I'm really glad you're here.

[00:00:52] This is a space for honest conversations, steady faith, and the reminder that you are not alone. Let's walk through this together.

[00:01:09] The Story Behind This Episode

---

[00:01:09] I had already canceled on my guest once, so when I got sick again, I told myself, "Whatever happens, I'm not canceling twice." I told her the night before, "I don't wanna cancel on you again, but I'm sick, so can we keep this to about a half hour?" She was gracious about it, and she didn't push back. So the next day, fighting two infections at once now, I pushed through anyway, and somewhere in the middle of it, I'd forgotten to press the record button.

[00:01:45] I didn't realize it until we got off the call. I looked up at my computer later when I went to edit and saw it, and that's when I broke down, not just over the mistake, but over everything it cost. Hours of energy I didn't have to spare spent on a conversation I now had nothing to show for, no podcast episode, nothing.

[00:02:15] So I finally made the decision to rest. My body had been telling me to stop for days now. And almost the second I laid down, the guilt showed up, that uninvited guilt. Not guilt over the mistake I had just made, but guilt over resting, like I should've been back at my desk fixing it instead of laying there healing, even though rest was the one thing my body actually needed before I ever pushed through that interview in the first place.

[00:02:54] That's the pattern I wanna talk about today, feeling guilty for [00:03:00] resting. Not guilt over doing something wrong, but the guilt over needing something at all, like a body that requires rest is somehow a moral failure instead of just being human. And here's what gets me every time I come back to this. Rest isn't something scripture treats as optional or something we have to earn from God.

[00:03:28] Rest Was Never Optional

---

[00:03:28] Genesis 2:2-3 says, "By the seventh day, God had finished the work he had been doing. So on the seventh day, he rested from all his work." If the God of the universe built rest into the rhythm of creation itself, rest was never meant to be the thing we feel guilty for. If you live with a chronic illness or are going through grief or a hard season of life right now, I don't have to explain that voice to you.

[00:04:07] You already know it. It's the one that shows up the second you lie down and starts listing everything you should be doing instead. Like your body asking for rest is an inconvenience you're supposed to push past instead of a signal you're supposed to listen to. Healthy people get to rest and just call it rest.

[00:04:32] We rest and somehow we feel like we have to justify it. That same guilt shows up somewhere a lot more routine too.

[00:04:42] The Infusion Center & Guilt

---

[00:04:42] Once a month right now, I go to an infusion center for treatment. It's not an emergency. It's not a crisis. It's just part of managing my health right now. But the medicine they give me before the infusion takes it out of me, and by the time I get home, I'm wiped out.

[00:05:03] I know before I even walk in the door that I'm not going to be able to work that night. My body needs that evening just to recover, and that's exactly where the guilt shows up. Not during the infusion itself, but after, when I'm sitting there knowing I have to let the whole night go. Emails I could be answering, things I could be getting ahead on, and instead, I have to just stop.

[00:05:36] Because if I don't rest that night, I pay for it for days. So I make myself lie down, and half of me is doing the math on everything I'm not getting done instead of just letting my body do what it actually needs and resting. Psalm 23:2 says, "He makes me lie down in green [00:06:00] pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters."

[00:06:03] Notice it doesn't say He suggests it or leaves it up to me. Thank goodness, right? He makes me lie down in green pastures. Some nights the infusion is the thing that makes me lie down. My body isn't malfunctioning when it needs that night off. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Maybe for you it's not an infusion.

[00:06:30] Maybe it's a flare-up, a treatment, a bad pain day, a medication that knocks you flat. Whatever your version is, I guess you know that exact feeling of watching the clock and mentally rescheduling your whole life around something your body needed no matter what you had planned. That's not you failing to manage your illness.

[00:06:59] That's you living with one.

[00:07:00] The Comparison Trap

---

[00:07:00] Then there's a pressure that has nothing to do with being sick at all. It's watching everyone else scrolling past people on Instagram and Facebook, posting three, four times a day, clearly keeping up, clearly thriving, and some part of me decides I have to match that pace regardless of what my body can actually carry that day.

[00:07:28] So I end up working later than I should, trying to get everything done at once because slowing down feels like falling behind. Even though I'm managing chronic illness and my energy simply isn't the same as someone else's. Matthew 11:28, NIV version says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

[00:08:00] In Matthew, Jesus says that all of us should come to him if we are burdened, and he will give us rest. We don't have to feel the heaviness and carry the burden of this world and how we see other people hustling over the internet. And here's the thing about comparison specifically. If you're managing a chronic illness and watching someone else's pace, you're not just comparing output.

[00:08:32] You're comparing two completely different bodies. Someone else's capacity was never the measuring stick of yours. Matching their pace was never actually the goal. It was never even possible, and holding yourself to it just adds guilt on top of a body that's already working hard enough. Here's what I keep sitting with across all three of these.

[00:08:59] The rest [00:09:00] was always going to be necessary. With the interview, since I forgot to hit record, we have to do the whole thing over anyway, and thank goodness the guest I had is willing to do that because the information she gave me was so valuable to all of my listeners. The very rest my body was asking for at that point happened regardless.

[00:09:28] I just made the road to it a lot harder. That's usually how it goes, right? The guilt doesn't prevent anything. It just adds a second weight on top of the first. If you're living with a chronic illness, you already know this in your bones better than anyone. Your body is going to get its rest one way or another.

[00:09:54] The only real choice you have is whether you fight it the whole way there, spending energy you don't have to spare, arguing with something that was never up for negotiation, or whether you just let it be what it actually is. Not a failure, not falling behind, just your body doing exactly what it needs to keep going

[00:10:23] Practical Steps

---

[00:10:23] So here's the practical piece.

[00:10:25] Whether you're managing illness, running on empty from ministry, work, or just plain life, the next time that guilt shows up while you're resting, try naming it out loud for what it is. Not truth, just an old, tired voice that learned somewhere along the way that your worth was tied to your output Then ask yourself what you tell a friend in your exact situation, someone you love, whose body was asking for the same thing yours is asking for right now.

[00:11:06] You'd tell her to rest. You wouldn't hesitate. Let that be enough for you, too.

[00:11:13] Song Recommendation: Just Be Held

---

[00:11:13] That's the heart behind the song I wanted to tell you about this week and leave with you today. The song is an older song, and I came across it as I was searching for songs that would go well with this episode. It's called Just Be Held by Casting Crowns.

[00:11:35] There are two lines of lyrics that I wanted to tell you about. One is, "And not a tear is wasted. In time you'll understand. I'm painting beauty with the ashes. Your life is in my hands." Then the second lyrics that I wanna tell you about says, "So when you're on your knees and answers [00:12:00] seem so far away, you're not alone.

[00:12:03] Stop holding on and just be held. Your world's not falling apart, it's falling into place. I'm on the throne. Stop holding on and just be held." So go listen to the YouTube video I'm going to link in the show notes. It sounds so much better when it's sung by Casting Crowns, trust me. This week's word of the week is held.

[00:12:31] Not held together by your own strength, held by Him, especially on the days you can't hold up anything else. If you take one thing away from today, let it be this. Needing rest was never the failure. The failure was believing you had to earn permission to receive it. Your body isn't betraying you when it asks you to stop.

[00:12:58] It's telling you the truth. And God isn't waiting for you to prove yourself before He lets you lie down in that green pasture. He's already leading you there. If today feels especially heavy, remember this. Joy was never about escaping suffering. It was about finding Christ in the midst of it. God sees you.

[00:13:26] He hasn't forgotten you, and He is still at work. If you'd like more encouragement between episodes, I'd love to have you join me on Substack. [00:13:56] And if someone comes to mind who needs this message today, I'd be so grateful if you'd share it with them. And until next time, remember, your story isn't over. God can still bring purpose to your pain. And even here, joy still remains
