We have in today’s readings the most basic moral injunction, the basis of them all: “Seek good and not evil”. And then a second time: “Hate evil, love good”. When we are wondering what to do in a situation - this is always our first port of call. It is never moral, it is never right, to choose to do an evil act under any circumstances. Of course, it is important to understand - what is the nature of the act I am about to do? This requires not only some prayer and reflection - but actually informing myself about the nature of the situation, the nature of my act, and the nature of the goal of my act. And its bizarre how we require the most scrupulous scientific examination of almost anything we do - and then suddenly when we get to a moral choice we can just make it up as we go based only on how we feel! Maybe it is time for us to grow up a bit and inform ourselves a bit more about the nature of right and wrong acts, and about the good life God guarantees to us in choosing the way he offers.
