Speaker:

This week I talk with Anastasia Lipske about booking speakers and

Speaker:

podcast guests, avoiding common mistakes in the field, and why it's

Speaker:

stupid to be rude to the AV staff.

Speaker:

Let's jump into it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Presenting & Speaking, the podcast and the interview.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Anastasia Lipske.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

How are you today?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I am actually doing really well.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Thank you.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Did I pronounce be here?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I wanna make sure, did I pronounce it correctly?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I see Anastasia, my mother said Anastasia.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The proper name is Anastasia.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Okay.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

There's 40 different ways people say it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It always surprises me.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I don't care.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Okay, awesome.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah, I, I kind of go with Kirsten Karastan Stein Christina.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The only one that bugs me is Karastan 'cause it's a brand

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

of rug . That's pretty much.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I am adjusting my mic on the wrong end, so if I tap it, it'll mute and

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

instead the dial's on the bottom.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So I'm like adjusting the top and muting myself.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Very well done.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

We're professionals, , so tell everybody in the audience what you do for a living.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Well, I have a very unique speaker and podcast booking agency.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yes.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Unique in the sense that, as you know, I mean you deal with speakers,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

you are a speaker, a traditional speaker agency is representing people

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

who are speaking for fee in essence.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So they do the work, they get them booked, and then they take

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

20, 30% of the honorarium that they get on behalf of that client.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I represent the people who are the platform marketing speakers, speak to

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

sell speakers, people who are speaking . As a means to grow their business.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They're using it as a marketing tool and or they want to be that professionally

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

paid speaker, but they're not there yet.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Generally, an agency usually won't work with someone if they're making

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

less than $5,000 per engagement on a consistent basis 'cause

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

there's no money in it for them.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So that free to fee.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That whole space and the people who are speaking as a marketing

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

tool don't have representation.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They either have to do it themselves or maybe they hire a va, but it's

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

not the only thing that the VA does.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

This is all we do.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Awesome.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I've been doing it for some time now.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I personally have booked, not just my agency, just me, I've

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

booked more than 1600, almost 1700 engagements on behalf of my clients.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So that's, we'll be talking about ongoing mastery time in boots on the ground.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The experience is really what helps support a person through that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So that's what I've been doing for years.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And then March of 2020 happened and everything was gone.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I lost everything overnight.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Every email was a cancellation because all I had booked were

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

in-person speaking engagements.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The only other free speaker agency I knew of closer doors in April of 2020.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So I had the chance to either, Let it go or embrace the pivot

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

word of 2020 and start booking podcasts for my grounded speakers.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So my clients are using it as a marketing tool, and it's one of

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

the best marketing tools they have.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So now they've lost that marketing tool and those, some of them had asked

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

if I could book them on podcasts in the past, and I always said no because

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I didn't have the bandwidth for it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Then all of a sudden like, Hmm, what do I have

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I know.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Podcasts.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Podcasts always were virtual.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Always will be virtual.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And the interesting thing is now I'm booking my clients again, back to speaking

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

in person virtual, and all those that said yes to having me book them on podcasts

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

are still doing podcasts, interviews.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

To help them with their speaking business and grow their business.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So it's just turned into a bigger part actually, of what I do now,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

because there's a broader reach.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I was very limited in who I could represent geographically.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You know, there are other types of limitations.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So the podcast booking is actually a bigger part of my business now.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And then the other thing I do is I do consulting.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And that's where I just help people with their branding, making sure that they're

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

showing up in such a way that they're likely to get booked as a speaker.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Are they seen as a speaker?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Do they really embody that idea of I am a speaker, and to your

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

people who are listening right now and they're speakers, right?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

This is your audience.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The question is, is how are you showing up when someone meets you

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

for the first time and they, hey, you know, ask you, what do you do?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Do you say speaker, In your description of yourself.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Is it in your email signature?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Even better in your email signature, does speaker link to

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

your speaker page on your site?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Like, are you being loud and proud about that aspect of yourself?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So I find like a lot of people, they'll talk about who they are and what they do.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Oh, and I speak, no.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Mm-hmm.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

, I'm a speaker.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I speak on this subject, which is my passion and what I do.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And that changes everything.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But the branding is important.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Everything from how you, you know, LinkedIn, your one sheet, all of that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And then, so I help them also with podcast guessing too, because people get the two

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

confused and sometimes they think that a one sheet for podcasting is gonna help

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

them with speaking, or maybe they'll do a podcast, one sheet and not realize

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

that you want different content in there.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You know, so you can do a hybrid that covers for both.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You can do one for each.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You can get booked on a podcast with a speaker.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

One sheet.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You cannot get booked to speak with a podcast.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

One sheet.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I'm gonna stop you right there.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Differentiation.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

There are people who are speakers, but they're either new to the world

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

or they are primarily X and they also speak professionally in that role,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

who may not know what a one sheet is.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So please explain how a one sheet works.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Thank you.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Thank you.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So a one sheet is in essence, a document that is your media kit,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

but it's referred to as a one sheet because ideally it is just one

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

page that's converted into a .pdf.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Although some people will go to two pages, if you have enough

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

content and you've been speaking long enough and two pages is fine.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

When you start getting anything beyond that, you're going to

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

lose the attention span of the people that you want to consider.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So this is in essence, a document that's gonna talk about you as a

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

speaker or you as a podcast guest.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It is not to have testimonials about how great you are at what you do

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

in your business, and that's one of the biggest mistakes that I see

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

people making when they create these one sheets to promote themselves.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They're getting testimonials about their work, or they'll have logos of

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

the companies that they've worked with.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Unless you have spoken to those companies, you don't put them on your one sheet

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

because that's not being authentic.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So an event planner.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

A speaker chair, the meeting planners, the people who are going to be

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

selecting amongst the various options of speakers, they're gonna look at

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

those things and they will judge you.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Buy the caliber of that document.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So you may be the most qualified speaker out of five people that

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they're considering, but I will tell you that they will pay attention to

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

the person who shows up as a pro.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So it's important.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yes, canvas, great.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

We can do our own, all that kinda stuff.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But I've been in this industry for a long time.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I know how to use Canva, and I've paid someone to do my one sheet.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It's important enough.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

For me to have it professional.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Uh, another mistake that I see people making is that on the one sheet they

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

sometimes will highlight their name at the top as being the biggest thing.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And really, you almost want your name to be secondary.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The most prevalent thing at the top is what you're about, who you are.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So like on mine, it's about using your voice.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

'cause that's what I'm all about.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I believe in using your voice.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

To share your message, whatever it might be.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Whether it's growing a business, growing a nonprofit, maybe you have a personal

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

thing that you're sharing that you're committed to and you wanna get your

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

message out, but it's using your voice.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So that's the top.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And then my name is secondary to that, so, so that's the primary thing is so

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they get sent out to people to consider you as a speaker or a podcast guest.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So let me ask you this, when people are putting themselves out there as

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

speakers, and I'm gonna lean a little bit in this part to the newer speakers.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Sure.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

What are the common mistakes that you see people making when they pick the topics

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

that they're putting on their one sheet?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Because I have a whole list in my head, so I'm curious what yours is.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

. Okay.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So the very first thing is the topic not being related to the audience

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

that you want to get in front of.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So the assumption of course is that you are speaking for a purpose.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

In particular, if you're paying someone like myself to get you booked to speak,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

you wanna make sure that there's a potential ROI, your your return on

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

investment of your money and time.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But even if you're not paying someone to do it, your time is valuable.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So if you are speaking to the wrong audience, They're

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

not gonna resonate with you.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You're not going to get any pickup.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You're not going to get people that are going to want to connect with you

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

after the fact, but it also is going to make the meeting planner look bad.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

If they brought you in and you are their speaker that they, in essence, hired

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

or brought in for free, but they still booked you, they're gonna be judged.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

By the caliber of the speaker that they're bringing in and

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

that makes them look really bad.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

No, that would be on them.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I will say also for not doing their due diligence, but nonetheless, you just

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

wanna make sure you're in alignment.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yes.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That's the number one thing that I see people, because we could

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

talk, like I could talk about, I.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Type one diabetes and what it's like to be a parent of a child who has that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I want to get out there and talk about that, but I'm not gonna be doing that

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

strategically and using my one sheet about me as a speaker to be talking

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

about what I speak on for my profession, and then going out there and talking

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

to parents or people about that topic.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Mm-hmm.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

. So if you wanna be careful, we could talk about a lot of things.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Right.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I suspect even if some of your people are newer to speaking, I bet they know.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Their industry.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I bet they know what they do, like the back of their hand.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Oh yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So how do you convey that?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And how do you convey that you are good at this, that you have

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

credibility, you have the street cred, in essence, to be up there

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

talking about this particular subject.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So that's the number one thing.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And also compelling topics.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Just writing it in a way that it's going to be of interest.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

These people don't have a lot of time.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They're gonna judge you in a split second.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

In fact, I have a very old vlog on my site on how to write a compelling topic

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

because what you wanna keep in mind are coming back the fact that these people

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

are being judged by who they bring in, but they're also being judged by the fact that

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they're in me case and selling tickets.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They want buts in seats for that meeting that mm-hmm.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

conference, whatever it is.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So who they bring on is gonna be really important.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So if your description for your topic is not compelling, When that content is

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

being shared for that conference, people are not gonna show up in your room.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And then again, the event planner is gonna be judged by that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So you wanna make sure that it's something that in essence, makes

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

someone want to come hear you speak.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yep.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Compelling topic, title, then a brief paragraph on what it is

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

that you're going to be conveying in that paragraph, and some key

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

takeaways that people are gonna get.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

If they spend their time with you, you wanna make sure that at the end of the

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

day, when they walk away from hearing you, that they are saying themselves even if

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they don't want to utilize your services.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

My time was well used listening to this person because I

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

learned something new there.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It's there it is.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The value audience first, the value, and I love that you brought this up.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So many speakers experienced new, the whole gamut, and you've

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

seen this, they do not recognize.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The role of the event planner and what their role as a speaker is

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

in relation to that event planner.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

What would you advise people who are doing events and are dealing with

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

event planners for the first time?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

What do you think?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

What would you give as the first few pieces of advice?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Okay.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Number one, don't be a diva speaker.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yes, number one.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Thank you.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

? Yes.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Okay.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That's it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Whether you are speaking for free.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

or getting paid boo bucks, okay?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Mm-hmm.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

. Sometimes people have this attitude that, Hey, oh yeah, they should be

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

rolling out the red carpet for me and bending over backwards to have me

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

there because they're not paying me.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And I'm all there.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Sorry.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That was an unattractive snort.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I just gave . But the reality is what you gotta keep in mind, it may

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

seem like a huge world, but it's not.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Event planners, talk to event planners, podcast hosts, talk to podcast hosts.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They know each other.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You want to be the type of speaker or podcast host that

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they fall in love with you.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Because they would go out of their way to promote you more.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They will connect you with more people.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You don't wanna be the person that they talk about like, oh, let me

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

tell you about my nightmare speaker.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So number one, don't be a diva speaker.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Don't be asking for them to go out of their way to do things.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Like I even knew someone who would ask Rotary Clubs if they

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

would print her handouts for her.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And, wait, I'm sorry.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I'm sorry.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Astounded Rotary Clubs.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Rotary Clubs.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yes.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Rotary Clubs, yes.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And I'm like, yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Oh hell no, no, no.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You come prepared.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Okay, so number one, you don't be that diva speaker.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You get them what they need on time.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Don't ever make, I feel like I'm being a grandma here.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I'm sorry if I'm coming down.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

No, no.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Please, please preach.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Please don't ever, ever, okay , preach assistant.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Don't ever make them have to ask for something twice,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

even if you are brand new.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Brand new to this.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Hopefully you have your one sheet, but even if you don't, at the very

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

least, you're gonna have a high quality image that they can use a

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

headshot, a high quality headshot.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

A really well written bio and that really well written topic.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

At the very least, you're going to want to have that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You're going to want to have other ways that you could be contacted, your

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

social media channels, your LinkedIn profile, all of this make it easy for

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

people to have access to all of that, so you don't have to ask you for it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But they will always ask you for those things.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And oftentimes they'll also ask you for an introduction.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Now, an introduction is not the same as your bio.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It's similar to your bio because an introduction is what's going to be read.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Before you speak, and that in essence is going to speak to

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

how you are qualified, okay?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You're credible to be speaking on that topic that's coming up so it's written a

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

little bit differently, but you wanna make sure that you have an introduction ready?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

When you are promoting yourself and they are booking you, they're

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

going to ask you for these things.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You wanna turn around and get it to them immediately, and in the format

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they ask for some of them, they'll give you a form and they want you

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

to download things into the form.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Others, they'll just ask you to send it via email.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But just for the love of all things wholly, don't make them asked

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

more than once because that's.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That makes them not happy campers.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So another thing that I think is really important is, in particular

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

with an in-person event, when you get there, Al first off, always get

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

there early, like extra, extra early.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

There's nothing wrong with sitting in a lobby or in a car and whatever, using

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

your phone to listen to an audiobook or whatever you wanna do, but you just

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

never know when there's gonna be a horrific accident or something like that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Always have the mobile number.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Of the person that you have been working with that's gonna be at the

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

event with you on your body, not if there's an accident and you're in a car.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You wanna literally have that printed next to you that you can

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

just grab it and you can call them or text them and say, I'm coming.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I'm coming.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yes.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I'm just running late.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But you all wanna have that cushion in there just in case.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Okay.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So get there extra early.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Mm-hmm.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

, that allows you, when you get there, to meet with the AV people

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

and don't be demanding in any way.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Come in and say, Hey, can I practice with you?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

How can I support you so that you can best support me?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You go at it from this kind attitude of wanting to make their job easy.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

There are so many speakers that are rude to the AV people and

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

treat them like they're servants and that is . That is not okay.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It's, it's not only bad karma, it's stupid because everybody in this

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

industry talks to everybody else.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I know.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

What he was thinking.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I know.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

. Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Agreed.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Agreed.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yes.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And then the next thing is connect with the people.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So event planners love it when a speaker connects with people.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They're mingling as people are coming in, they're saying hello,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they're introducing themselves.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Pay attention.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You know, I know you're, you're asking more about things that you can do to

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

support the event planner, you know, and that does, but I'm also gonna talk about

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

the value of being on the stage and how much better it's going to go when you've

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

connected with those people ahead of time.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And in particular, if you can remember the name.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Of just two or three people and something about them that you were talking to them

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

about, like, I don't know, you're talking to John and he's talking about his new

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

South African Mastiff puppy that he got.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You're on the stage and there's something that comes up in your

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

presentation that you can pull in.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

A puppy.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Mm-hmm.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

or something new.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Or something that, how your life can be completely thrown out of whack

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

when you get a new puppy like John here who just got a South African

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

baaf and maybe it's only 50 pounds now, but he's gonna be 180 pounds.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You know, in a year.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

When you do that and you say something personal and you say that person's name,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

everyone in the room pays attention.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yes.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It's like EF Hutton talking like they, because they zone in because you cared.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Enough to remember his name and something personal about him.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Oh, this is gold.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Is gold.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It's gold.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

This is all, this is all perfect.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Oh, I'm so glad.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I wanna ask one more question and.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I wanna tee it up because I know that this is something we could talk about

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

forever, but what I notice, and I'm sure it drives you nuts too, is the number

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

of speakers who are not aware that if they are supposed to speak from two to

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

three, their time does not start at 1 45.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Hmm.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So if I'm scheduled to speak from two to three, Anastasia, when

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

does my time as a speaker start?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Well, your time as a speaker starts when it starts, okay?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You wanna, but you wanna get there early, so you definitely wanna get there

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

early, show up beforehand so you can be connecting with people and be prepared.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But your presentation starts when they say to start, and it by

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

golly ends when they say it ends.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So you don't go over, you honor the time.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It's very, very important that you do that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And don't ever say, I wish I had more time Mm, to talk about this, because then

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

that makes the event planner look bad.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Like they didn't give you enough time.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That's not appropriate either.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So was that, was that what you were referring to or were you leaning towards

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Because that was, I was else around that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I was thinking, I was thinking specifically about the number of times

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

that a speaker has gotten pulled up early.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

because the previous person didn't show or wasn't ready.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Or like you were saying, you gotta be there to talk, to

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

work the room before you talk.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Right, right, right.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Because that's part of your job too.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And then what would you say is the after part?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The after stage part?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The just one most important thing as a takeaway.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

First, I, I just wanna say something about if you get pulled up early.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

A lot of it will depend on also what's going on.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Like if you are a scheduled speaker to speak at three o'clock and people

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

are coming into the room to hear you speak, you don't wanna go early.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

If it's a space where you've got speakers lined up, there's only one room.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

and everybody's gonna be there and you don't have a chance of missing someone

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

who was coming to hear you speak, then by all means, you're supporting the event

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

planner by being willing to step in early.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But you wanna be, make sure that it's not going to, in any way mess

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

up the agenda for the people that are coming to see you at three o'clock.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So, but as to the after, it's the sticking ground.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It's the same thing that diva thing that often happens is that at the end

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they get off the stage and they're gone.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they're gone.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Mm-hmm.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

. Just, that's it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That's it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They don't stay around.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And the time to really connect, this is about connection with people is

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

after you've spoken, and then you're still hanging out until the event is

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

over because then you get to talk to people and they're gonna come up and

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they're gonna say, I really loved your talk about blah, blah, blah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And you get to have that dialogue and go deeper with them and get

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

their information and, and . Stay in touch with them afterwards, you know?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I think that that's really going to be important.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

The ones who are gone, that's it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

They're missing out on all that opportunity, which

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

then makes me wonderful.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Like, why are you doing this now for paid speaking engagement?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I get that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Or if you're, they're super famous, I get that, but even then, a lot of famous

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

people, they still stick behind because they know that's where the gold is.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That's where the connection happens.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Fantastic.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Most definitely.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So obviously you have

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So much valuable information.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

How do people find you?

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I love connecting with people on LinkedIn.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I'm the only person there with my name.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That makes it easy.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Okay.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But I also have a page that you can go to that's pretty easy to remember because

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

it's just my web address, which is actually shown on the screen right now.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

It's access speakers.biz for anyone who's listening.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So BIZ at the end.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

If you go to access speakers.biz/thank you, that's a page that.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I have everything in there, all my contact information.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

If anyone is interested in doing a a mini consultation, a free mini

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

consultation, I am happy to set up 15, 20 minutes where I can talk with you

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

and point out some things that I feel can benefit you in you growing your

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

speaking and or podcast guesting business.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You know, I've got a free ebook you can access there.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Everything's just in one place, and I do recommend.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

That everyone else have one place for that as well.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So what often happens, in particular in the podcasting world,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

someone will go on and on and on.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Like, well, they can find me on Insta here and on Twitter here and on threads here

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

and on, on, you know, here's my website.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And here, you know, they're going on and on and on.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You know, meanwhile, somebody's in the car stuck in traffic and

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

they can't write all that down.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So if you have one place, You send everyone, and yes, you can use like

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

a link tree and things like that, but you can't do a personal message.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So if anybody actually goes to this page.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Now, I, I know I'm speaking longer on this right now, but I'm, I'm kind of

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

demonstrating what I would suggest to all of your listeners, if you go to my page,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

access speakers dot b slash thank you.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I have a video there.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I'm welcoming people saying, Hey, if you're here, you either heard, saw

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

me speak, or heard me on a podcast, or maybe I just gave you the link.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I don't know.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

But welcome, you know, and you can do something really personal and

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

you can change it all the time.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Yeah.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Now remember in the podcasting world, everything is evergreen.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So you wanna be careful about anything that you're sharing.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Don't be talking about your summit that's coming up in two weeks or,

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

or anything that's tied into a date.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

You wanna be more generic in what you're sharing, but you also have the

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

ability to change the content that's in there and continually update it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So, I recommend having one place, but I do love connecting on LinkedIn.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I love helping and supporting people.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So if they wanna, you know, reach out to me, please introduce yourself, because

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

if you don't, I'm not going to accept.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I'm in it for the relationships.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

So let me know that you saw me here, or you heard me on uh, Kirsten's

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

show, and I would be delighted.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

To talk with people.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Fantastic.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Alright, that was, thank you so much for coming on.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

I really, really appreciate it.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And everybody please hop over to LinkedIn Connect and, and just get all the gold.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

All right.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

And we will see everybody in the next episode.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

As always like, subscribe and leave all the comments.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

We will respond.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

Have a good one.

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery:

. Bye.
