Aisha:

Mission and vision statements.

Aisha:

Ugh, whenever I hear those words, I think back to my days in corporate America

Aisha:

where there were random words plastered on the hallway walls and spouted off

Aisha:

during orientations and staff retreats.

Aisha:

None of those words meant anything to me because there was no

Aisha:

evidence that the organizations actually meant a single word.

Aisha:

They said, well, wouldn't it be nice if the business that

Aisha:

you built wasn't like that?

Aisha:

What are the values you outlined for yourself?

Aisha:

Were intentionally selected and actually embodied who you were and what you

Aisha:

stood for, not only in your day to day, but throughout your practice.

Aisha:

Do you think it would make a difference?

Aisha:

Welcome to Beyond the Session with Aisha Shaba.

Aisha:

In this episode of Beyond the Session, I'm not going to teach you how to draft

Aisha:

a mission and vision statement, but I'm going to share with you how creating

Aisha:

a value-driven practice can contribute to the longevity of your career.

Aisha:

Placing your values at the center of your practice can help you

Aisha:

remain focused on your priorities.

Aisha:

And what I mean by that is your values are really an intrinsic aspect of

Aisha:

who you are as a person, and it's essentially what you stand for.

Aisha:

So if you're entering into private practice because you're feeling

Aisha:

overwhelmed and burnt out, wouldn't it be nice to build a business on

Aisha:

something that supports your wellness?

Aisha:

That is where you could start with establishing where your values are,

Aisha:

especially if you don't know what your values are or how you want

Aisha:

them to show up in your practice.

Aisha:

The other thing to consider is that knowing your values will

Aisha:

help you as you build the various components of your practice.

Aisha:

One aspect of that is in your policies and protocols.

Aisha:

So if you have the value of consistency and you're thinking

Aisha:

to yourself, I wanna show up consistently for my clients, maybe.

Aisha:

A value could show up as the days of the week that you offer to your clients.

Aisha:

Maybe you wanna show your clients.

Aisha:

I value consistency, so I'm gonna offer you appointments

Aisha:

at the same time every week.

Aisha:

Another way that you can show your values throughout your practice is you could

Aisha:

ask yourself, well, what do I need?

Aisha:

If consistency is what you need, And you weren't able to find that when

Aisha:

you were working for somebody else, then maybe you need to consistently

Aisha:

have the same number of days off per week, per month, per quarter.

Aisha:

It's not always all about your clients, and I think that's the biggest

Aisha:

difference between working for somebody else and working in private practice.

Aisha:

You really have an opportunity to focus on your.

Aisha:

and you have an opportunity to focus on what the client needs.

Aisha:

Both of them can coexist.

Aisha:

One shouldn't overshadow the other, and I don't like using the word should, but

Aisha:

you'll hear me say that on occasion.

Aisha:

And the reason why is because when you are shoulding yourself, you're really putting

Aisha:

yourself in a position to not think about things in a yes and perspective.

Aisha:

When you should yourself.

Aisha:

It really is forcing yourself to look at things from an either or perspective.

Aisha:

And for any of you that have heard me during a decolonization workshop and

Aisha:

training, you know how I feel about either or thinking according to many

Aisha:

scholars, they consider either or thinking as a characteristic of white supremacy.

Aisha:

So I really.

Aisha:

Going towards the shoulds and the absolutes.

Aisha:

I really do encourage people to consider yes, and one because it's more freeing and

Aisha:

there isn't one right way to do things.

Aisha:

There are multiple ways to find solutions to the challenges that you're experiencing

Aisha:

and multiple ways to find that liberation freedom and flexibility that.

Aisha:

Private practice promised you in the first place
