Mother's Day is not just about celebrating moms; it's a prime opportunity for evangelism and spiritual growth. I’ve been teaching the Bible for a long time, and I’ve seen how many churches miss out on reaching unchurched family members who show up just to please mom. This episode dives into how we can maximize this day by focusing on visitors, not just the mothers. We’ll share practical tips for making the most of this unique chance to connect with those who may not usually attend church. Let’s explore how we can create an inviting atmosphere that encourages everyone to return and discover more about faith.

Welcome to the Ministry Miscellany Podcast A collection of tools, strategy and challenges for Bible teachers from me, Yvonne Pran, someone who's been teaching the Bible ever since.
Speaker A:As a third grader, I started to teach the kindergartners at my church about Jesus.
Speaker A:I've never quit doing that, and along the way I've picked up some practices, strategies, and resources that might be useful to you.
Speaker A:Our topic for today is Mother's Day.
Speaker B:I want to share with you why it is a great Sunday for evangelism.
Speaker A:And spiritual growth, and here's some ideas on how to make the most of it.
Speaker A:Mother's Day, as most people know, is.
Speaker B:The third highest day for attendance in.
Speaker A:The church in North America.
Speaker B:It runs just slightly behind Christmas and Easter.
Speaker A:Though most churches know this and work hard to make it a special Sunday, I truly think that many miss significant evangelism and spiritual growth opportunities for that.
Speaker B:Day because of the day's exclusive focus on mothers.
Speaker A:Now, please don't misunderstand me.
Speaker A:I'm not saying churches shouldn't honor mothers on Mother's Day.
Speaker B:They should.
Speaker A:It's an important time to praise mothers, to thank God for them.
Speaker A:But what I am recommending is that.
Speaker B:Churches not make mothers their exclusive focus,.
Speaker A:But that they take advantage of the.
Speaker B:Additional ministry opportunities made possible that day because of mothers.
Speaker B:Now, there are three ways that that.
Speaker A:Can be done, and I'm going to.
Speaker B:Do three separate ministry miscellany podcasts describing each of them.
Speaker B:First of all, this one, which is about evangelistic opportunities, and hang in there with me, I think you're going to learn some really interesting things.
Speaker B:The second one is to honor moms by challenging them to pray, both spiritual and physical mothers.
Speaker A:That features one mother's prayer, and that's.
Speaker B:A whole separate podcast, and then one to challenge your people to spiritual parenting.
Speaker B:But first, before we go into any of those other things, let's talk about the evangelism opportunities that are really going on on Mother's Day.
Speaker B:And a lot of people don't see it.
Speaker B:You see, the reason is we forget the churches are so full on Mother's Day, not because obviously that's the only.
Speaker A:Time of year mothers come to church.
Speaker B:They're there all the time.
Speaker B:The reason it's so full that the attendance is so is that all the unchurched people in the lives of those mothers, their unchurched spouses and unchurched children, they will come to church that day to make mom happy.
Speaker B:This is a great evangelistic opportunity for your church.
Speaker B:Now here are some ideas on how to make the most of it.
Speaker B:And by the way, I have a little ebook that goes over all of these.
Speaker B:It's completely free to you.
Speaker B:Just go to the Bible855.com website and under Ministry Miscellaney or Practical Ministry, either one, you can download the little booklet.
Speaker B:But anyway, let me charge ahead here and some ideas.
Speaker B:First of all, make it a priority in your planning to recognize that this is above all else, a tremendous evangelistic and outreach opportunity.
Speaker B:What you say, what you do, how you plan Mother's Day, if it will really shift, if realize that this is one of the most important things.
Speaker B:Assemble a prayer team.
Speaker B:Or you can just add to your prayer list.
Speaker B:If you're a smaller church, you probably know who is already on it.
Speaker B:But to pray to begin praying specifically for the unsaved, unchurched and strained family members who will probably come to church that Sunday with mom.
Speaker B:Pray for sensitivity to their needs.
Speaker B:Create attractive invitations for your members to give out to family members.
Speaker B:Let the members of the church know you're going to focus on visitors on unchurched spouses and children, not just the moms.
Speaker B:On that Sunday.
Speaker B:Get everyone praying for this.
Speaker B:Do check out one Mother's Prayer.
Speaker B:It's a handout that can really inspire the power of mothers, both physical and spiritual, to pray now on Mother's Day itself as whoever is leading the service, acknowledge the visitors who come on that day to please and earthly parent and affirm that it's a very positive, wonderful thing to do.
Speaker B:But don't stop there.
Speaker B:Follow with a lesson or sermon about how they have a heavenly parent who's longing for them to come home in the faith even more than their mom wanted them to come to church this Sunday.
Speaker B:Be honest that one of the greatest pains in a mother's heart is that her child or her spouse doesn't know Jesus.
Speaker B:To be apart in life might be hard, but to contemplate an eternity without those you love.
Speaker B:One Sunday in church won't make up for it.
Speaker B:In your sermon, say for the mother what she would really want to say to her child or spouse.
Speaker B:Be honest that an eternity without Jesus means eternal separation from those we love.
Speaker B:This is not easy to say.
Speaker B:Acknowledge.
Speaker B:You can say, you know, this isn't easy for me to talk about this on what's a really happy day.
Speaker B:But to not say things that can make an eternal difference is not expressing love.
Speaker B:Love is honest about the consequences of a life lived apart from God.
Speaker B:Now I'm quite certain that all the pastors that are listening to this are going to have much better ways of saying what I just did.
Speaker B:But I trust you get the idea.
Speaker B:Talk to the people that are there that you may not.
Speaker B:You might not even see them on Christmas and Easter, but they're going to come.
Speaker B:Mom.
Speaker B:Be brave.
Speaker B:Pray for tact and sensitivity, but preach the good news of Jesus.
Speaker B:And then here are some additional kind of fun ideas that if you really want to go all out that you could do on Mother's Day, think about doing like a open house brunch for moms and adult children.
Speaker B:Or you could do kind of a fun little take off on open house days at school and have a visit your parents Sunday school class, open house and do kind of some fun things on that.
Speaker B:You could also think about if you're, especially if you're a larger church, an outreach oriented ministry fair.
Speaker B:Not a ministry fair to get people in the church involved, but something where visitors can see all the different activities that your church does outside of just Sunday morning.
Speaker B:For example, maybe the mother will invite some young adult singles.
Speaker B:And if you have a single adult ministry, you could have a table there where they could be welcoming people and telling them about the different things that they do and just letting them know that there is a place in the church for them.
Speaker B:A table for the men is really important where unchurched husbands can see the men of your church.
Speaker B:Maybe they've got displays about construction projects they're doing or work days or golf outings or sports events or whatever, but that a table that's staffed by men who reach out, welcome and engage visiting spouses in conversation.
Speaker B:That can be an incredible gift to the mom who comes every Sunday just on her own.
Speaker B:It might encourage her husband to come along with her also too.
Speaker B:Don't forget that many people outside of the church like to volunteer for worthwhile projects.
Speaker B:If your church has a food share, maybe a beach or community cleanup, maybe they're doing a Habitat for Humanity build.
Speaker B:Any of these things can be great to invite unchurched members to join in.
Speaker B:They'll get to know you better.
Speaker B:People at your church see what's important to you.
Speaker B:It can be a wonderful experience.
Speaker B:Let visiting family members know you want them to come back next week.
Speaker B:One of the things that's worked out in kind of fun ways is doing either a publication or just verbally saying too something along the lines of want to make mom really happy this year for Mother's Day?
Speaker B:And pause and then tell her you're coming back to church with her next Sunday.
Speaker B:Seriously, you know, something fun like that can work out really well.
Speaker B:And also too again on a serious note, challenge visiting adult children and spouses to make this Mother's Day the most memorable one ever by giving mom the gift she wants more than anything else, which is for them to trust Jesus.
Speaker B:Be sure you have a clear Gospel presentation.
Speaker B:Tell them how to become a Christian.
Speaker B:Put something in your bulletin, maybe a handout to take home if you don't know what to say.
Speaker B:The American Tract Society's got all kinds of great little flyers and tracts and things like that in your bulletin or program or however you want to do it from up front too.
Speaker B:Have something on your website or people to contact, text, email, whatever.
Speaker B:If people want to know more about the Christian faith, something that's confidential and you know, if you've heard about this, but it doesn't really make sense, we'd love to dialogue with you, so just try any of these kinds of things.
Speaker B:Just making the Most of Mother's Day as a Time for Evangelism now granted, this is a very different approach to Mother's Day, but if you plan ahead, pray about it, and work hard on it, your Mother's Day can have a much more eternal impact.
Speaker B:And it's going to totally outlast the flowers that you give out.
Speaker B:And speaking of those flowers, I'm going to talk about them a little bit more in the next episode about Mother's.
Speaker A:Day I trust you found the content in this episode of Ministry Miscellaney useful.
Speaker A:For links to any resources mentioned and lots of free material to help you know, trust, apply and teach the Bible, go to www.bible805.com Let me close now with a reminder from the book of Daniel 12:3 where it says those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.
Speaker A:That's you, someone who leads many to righteousness.
Speaker A:And in doing that, may you be ever growing in your reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit, in the deepening of your friendship with Jesus, and in your trust in the goodness of God the Father.
Speaker A:Never forgetting in all the hard work you do that you have a glorious heritage where you will shine like the stars forever and ever.
Speaker A:Amen.
