In this very brief episode, Dr. Wendy Bazilian shares a personal reflection on why true rest and recreation are not luxuries—they're essential parts of health. As she takes a short break to reconnect with family, nature, and herself, she offers thoughtful reminders about the creative, healing power of play, presence, and pausing.
Whether you’re already taking time off or planning your next moment of rest, recreation or vacation, this episode invites you to reframe “rest” as a necessary rhythm of wellbeing.
Featuring a quote from poet David Whyte and wisdom from Wendy’s 6-year-old daughter, this heartfelt message is a gentle nudge to explore, recharge, and remember what truly matters.

I like to explore because
Speaker:it gives you new ideas
Speaker:on how to be yourself
Speaker:and it helps you.
Speaker:We experience 1,000 waking
Speaker:minutes on average every day.
Speaker:How are you spending yours?
Speaker:I'm Dr. Wendy Bazilian and
Speaker:you're listening to 1,000
Speaker:Waking Minutes.
Speaker:I can't wait to connect
Speaker:with you here with practical
Speaker:ways to eat well, move
Speaker:daily, and be healthy, to
Speaker:optimize every waking minute you
Speaker:live for a happier, healthier
Speaker:life.
Speaker:Thank you for sharing some
Speaker:of your waking minutes with
Speaker:me today.
Speaker:Let's get started.
Speaker:I'm saying yes to better
Speaker:days, yes.
Speaker:I'm on my way, yes.
Speaker:It's gonna be okay, yeah.
Speaker:Hello, it's Wendy Bazilian, your
Speaker:host on 1,000 Waking
Speaker:Minutes, and this week
Speaker:as
Speaker:I'm heading on a little
Speaker:holiday and stepping away to
Speaker:spend some much-needed time
Speaker:with my family.
Speaker:I didn't want to go
Speaker:completely silent, so I decided
Speaker:to record here a couple
Speaker:of minutes to share.
Speaker:I always say that health
Speaker:isn't just about nutrition and
Speaker:movement.
Speaker:It's also about rhythm, and
Speaker:right now my rhythm is
Speaker:calling for a little pause
Speaker:for some recreation.
Speaker:Now, we often say that
Speaker:we're taking a break or
Speaker:going on vacation.
Speaker:Abroad, they call it a
Speaker:holiday, which I kind of
Speaker:love.
Speaker:Personally, I really like to
Speaker:think of it as recreation
Speaker:because that word says so
Speaker:much when you really think
Speaker:about it.
Speaker:Sure, it's a break in
Speaker:one sense, a pause from
Speaker:deadlines, the housework, my inbox,
Speaker:and that constant mental load
Speaker:of everyday life.
Speaker:It's a mental break in
Speaker:one sense, but it's not
Speaker:a break from the mind
Speaker:itself.
Speaker:It's just a different way
Speaker:to engage it.
Speaker:You're still thinking, sensing, noticing,
Speaker:and it's just with a
Speaker:little more space and more
Speaker:ease.
Speaker:It's less about checking the
Speaker:boxes on your to-do
Speaker:list and more about checking
Speaker:in with yourself, your people,
Speaker:and your surroundings.
Speaker:Recreation, think about the word,
Speaker:literally, re-creation, and it's
Speaker:a part, a vital part
Speaker:of being well.
Speaker:Whether it's a long walk,
Speaker:extended time to just daydream,
Speaker:enjoy something that gives you
Speaker:the giggles or downright belly
Speaker:laughs, or maybe take a
Speaker:nap in the outdoors, these
Speaker:are the moments how we
Speaker:refill our spiritual and our
Speaker:physical tanks.
Speaker:Holidays or real recreation helps
Speaker:us return to our work,
Speaker:our relationships, even our own
Speaker:thoughts with more clarity and
Speaker:more energy.
Speaker:So I'm disconnecting, really, so
Speaker:I can actually better reconnect
Speaker:with my daughter and family,
Speaker:with nature, with quiet, and
Speaker:with myself.
Speaker:And while this is a
Speaker:short hello today, I hope
Speaker:it can also be a
Speaker:message or perhaps simply a
Speaker:reminder that we can all
Speaker:benefit from this and that
Speaker:recreation and rest aren't just
Speaker:luxuries.
Speaker:They're part of what it
Speaker:means to be well.
Speaker:Rest isn't a reward for
Speaker:productivity.
Speaker:It's what makes real productivity
Speaker:possible.
Speaker:So as I take a
Speaker:bit of a mental break,
Speaker:that doesn't mean I'll be
Speaker:lounging the whole time, though
Speaker:that does sound nice for
Speaker:a little bit.
Speaker:And a mental break isn't
Speaker:just about our emotional health
Speaker:or my emotional health, but
Speaker:it's about tapping other parts
Speaker:of our mental spaces too.
Speaker:Creativity, registering new sounds and
Speaker:new tastes, creating new memories,
Speaker:and allowing time to reflect
Speaker:on the many things that
Speaker:have occurred in recent months
Speaker:and occasions, solidifying memories, since
Speaker:it does seem like we're
Speaker:always moving at such a
Speaker:quick pace at times.
Speaker:I'm looking forward to eating
Speaker:foods that are nourishing and
Speaker:fun and new, moving my
Speaker:body in ways that feel
Speaker:joyful, and getting in the
Speaker:water, which is calling me,
Speaker:perhaps all of us, right
Speaker:now.
Speaker:And I'll be leaning into
Speaker:health through self-care and
Speaker:play, real play, playing cards,
Speaker:games we make up, silly
Speaker:stories we tell, and exploring
Speaker:without a schedule.
Speaker:So back to the idea
Speaker:of recreation and rest.
Speaker:It's a vital part of
Speaker:overall well-being.
Speaker:I was thinking about a
Speaker:line from the poet and
Speaker:philosopher David Whyte, who was
Speaker:also actually a personal friend
Speaker:of a dear friend of
Speaker:ours who passed just one
Speaker:year ago.
Speaker:In his book, Consolations, David
Speaker:Whyte writes, in his chapter
Speaker:on rest, and I quote,
Speaker:"Rest is the conversation between
Speaker:what we love to do
Speaker:and how we love to
Speaker:be," end quote.
Speaker:That one line says so
Speaker:much.
Speaker:Rest isn't passive.
Speaker:It's deeply creative.
Speaker:It's how we reconnect to
Speaker:the why behind what we
Speaker:do, whether that's our work,
Speaker:our parenting, or just how
Speaker:we show up for others
Speaker:and for ourselves.
Speaker:And honestly, some of the
Speaker:best reminders come from my
Speaker:daughter.
Speaker:She's now six, and she
Speaker:teaches me daily about the
Speaker:value of play and presence.
Speaker:When we were talking about
Speaker:our upcoming trip, we talked
Speaker:about having new spaces to
Speaker:play and explore, and here's
Speaker:what she said.
Speaker:"You know what's important about
Speaker:play, Mama, is that it
Speaker:helps you learn and grow
Speaker:and just be yourself."
Speaker:Isn't that poetic and so
Speaker:true and so cute?
Speaker:It helps not just children,
Speaker:but us.
Speaker:Helps us learn and grow
Speaker:and be and find ourselves.
Speaker:Another thing that she said,
Speaker:"I like to explore because
Speaker:it gives you new ideas
Speaker:on how to be yourself,
Speaker:and it helps you."
Speaker:I mean, so, so good.
Speaker:That's in her words, in
Speaker:her voice.
Speaker:It's kind of amazing what
Speaker:we inherently know before we're
Speaker:sometimes taught to forget.
Speaker:So maybe this is your
Speaker:reminder, too, to step away
Speaker:from the scroll, the noise,
Speaker:the constant doing, even just
Speaker:for a moment, to play
Speaker:and to explore.
Speaker:And in the meantime, I'm
Speaker:dreaming up some fresh ideas
Speaker:I'm excited to share with
Speaker:you soon.
Speaker:But for now, I'm off
Speaker:the mic, barefoot in the
Speaker:grass, listening to what my
Speaker:body and the world around
Speaker:me have to say.
Speaker:Thanks for being here.
Speaker:Remember to take in some
Speaker:daily moments, some weekly moments
Speaker:to rest and recreate, too.
Speaker:Thank you for sharing a
Speaker:few of your waking minutes
Speaker:with me today.
Speaker:And until soon, be well.
