The HallWay Podcast is back after a long hiatus dropping jewels to LSU about their college football expectations as well as sharing his newfound belief in his Atlanta Braves team
What up, what up?
Speaker:It's your boy Marcell hall.
Speaker:And thank you for listening to the hallway podcast.
Speaker:As usual, we talk about sports, hip hop, life kingdom, you name it.
Speaker:Whatever's going on in the news.
Speaker:We talk about it.
Speaker:I know, I know it's been a long time since your boy is dropping an
Speaker:episode and I am sorry for that.
Speaker:COVID.
Speaker:Everything's blamed on COVID man.
Speaker:Sorry about that.
Speaker:But your boy's back trying to bring you the hallway podcast on a consistent basis.
Speaker:So let's go ahead and let's get into it guys.
Speaker:It has been a tough fall for me so far.
Speaker:As those who know me know I am a USC football fan and things are not good.
Speaker:. It is a historically.
Speaker:Bad season for the Trojans.
Speaker:They are losing to a team for the first time in 16, 80 and a hundred years.
Speaker:And not only are they losing, but they are getting spanked.
Speaker:When they do lose.
Speaker:Then my 49ers were supposed to be good this year and we are not, we
Speaker:are looking like last year where we had injuries and we might end
Speaker:this season with a losing record.
Speaker:So it has been very tough angels.
Speaker:Didn't even get close to sniffing the playoffs.
Speaker:However, however, there has been some encouragement.
Speaker:From the Atlanta Braves.
Speaker:And so those who know me know the angels are my American league
Speaker:team, but the Atlanta Braves are my national league team.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:I started liking them in the nineties.
Speaker:David Justice get.
Speaker:Uh, Terry Pendleton and the whole squad.
Speaker:And so the Atlanta Braves are doing their thing.
Speaker:So as we stand right now, the braise are up to zero against
Speaker:the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers.
Speaker:And I won't lie to you.
Speaker:When we got the match up, your boy was scared.
Speaker:And I'll be honest with you.
Speaker:I'm still a little bit scared because we were up to oh, last year.
Speaker:No, in fact, we were up three, one last year and still lost the series.
Speaker:Still very salty about that.
Speaker:However, after these last two games, I have become a believer.
Speaker:I am a believer in my Atlanta Braves.
Speaker:SI SI.
Speaker:Yes, we can.
Speaker:Yes, we can.
Speaker:I believe it.
Speaker:If the Cincinnati bear cats can be the number two team in college
Speaker:football right now, then my beloved Atlanta Braves can beat the Dodgers.
Speaker:If straight out of Compton.
Speaker:Could be nominated for.
Speaker:An Oscar.
Speaker:. Then I believe the Braves can win this series.
Speaker:If a black president can go to terms without being assassinated or
Speaker:even an attempt at an assassination on his life, then yes, the braids
Speaker:can go to the world series.
Speaker:And guys, I'll be honest with you.
Speaker:I need them to do this.
Speaker:I do.
Speaker:Or I'm going to need some sports therapy.
Speaker:Because emotionally, I can't take it Saturday and Sundays.
Speaker:They're very tough for me.
Speaker:I have a great time worshiping the Lord.
Speaker:One of my brothers and sisters at the OSI church of Christ, but man on man, when
Speaker:I get home or the day before, and I see these scores from my team, it's tough.
Speaker:So I need the Atlanta Braves.
Speaker:So if you love me at all, if you love the hallway podcast, then please.
Speaker:Please root for the Atlanta Braves to beat the Dodgers.
Speaker:Cause if not, I can't take it.
Speaker:I can't take it emotionally.
Speaker:I mean it's affecting me.
Speaker:I'm not sure if it's because I'm getting old and I'm over 40 now.
Speaker:I'm not sure what it is, but emotionally I can't take it.
Speaker:But I want to talk about some more college football right now.
Speaker:LSU and coach ETO.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:Oh, drawn have decided they are going to part ways after the season.
Speaker:That's interesting.
Speaker:Making that announcement now I'm sure there's some rhyme or reason to that maybe
Speaker:that helps them for their recruiting.
Speaker:Uh, even though ETO is known to be a phenomenal recruiter wherever he's
Speaker:been Miami, USC, Tennessee, back at USC, Ole miss, and LSU has always had
Speaker:top tier talent that is joined him.
Speaker:But they've decided to part ways after the season.
Speaker:Now, this is just two years, not even two full years.
Speaker:Not even two full years since LSU won a national championship.
Speaker:Now they had a terrible season last year, but they did have a number of players.
Speaker:In fact, Jamar chase.
Speaker:The, the star wide receiver who's balling right now in the NFL, him
Speaker:and several other players chose not to play because of COVID.
Speaker:Then he had some injuries.
Speaker:This year, they're four and three, but they actually, I think can
Speaker:still win the sec and still go to the sec championship game, which
Speaker:would put them in a, a new years.
Speaker:A bowl game.
Speaker:So I think.
Speaker:I think that's correct, but they can still have a 10 win season.
Speaker:And they decided to fire the coach who just won a championship two years ago.
Speaker:Now say this.
Speaker:I don't know if he's the right guy.
Speaker:I don't, I don't know.
Speaker:I won't ever claim that, that he is.
Speaker:And I know this is not just.
Speaker:How many games you lose, even though that's huge.
Speaker:But it's also how you lose the games.
Speaker:LSU.
Speaker:Probably sealed his fate once they got whooped by Kentucky.
Speaker:Yeah, I'm still talking football here.
Speaker:I'm not talking basketball.
Speaker:When LSU put a whooping on Kentucky.
Speaker:I believe they felt like this can never happen.
Speaker:We have to go a different direction and it's true.
Speaker:LSU should never get their butt spanked by Kentucky in football, basketball.
Speaker:You know, lacrosse, any other sport, don't have a problem with it.
Speaker:But not in football.
Speaker:That's like carrot, top carried time should never win a comedy
Speaker:battle against Kevin Hart.
Speaker:That should never happen.
Speaker:Just like Kentucky should never, ever whoop up on LSU.
Speaker:But I will say this to you, LSU.
Speaker:You need a reality check.
Speaker:LSU you are an LSU is a top.
Speaker:Top 15 program.
Speaker:Yeah, I would say definitely a top 15 program.
Speaker:Top 20 all time.
Speaker:But they're not an elite program.
Speaker:Now, hold off.
Speaker:And let me finish.
Speaker:LSU has been elite.
Speaker:For several years.
Speaker:But we're talking about the grand scale of college football.
Speaker:LSU was not in that top tier.
Speaker:See the elite programs, the top tier programs I'm talking of all time,
Speaker:not this past decade of all time.
Speaker:Those elite programs have been doing this since world war one.
Speaker:We're talking world war one.
Speaker:Now they're second and third tier programs, which are outstanding.
Speaker:But, but let's remind people of the all time elite programs we're talking.
Speaker:Every decade since the world war one.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:USC.
Speaker:Notre Dame, Alabama, Oklahoma.
Speaker:You get the Michigan and Ohio state in there.
Speaker:And then you have your second tier teams.
Speaker:They've been doing it for the last 30 years.
Speaker:Uh, maybe even 40 years.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:You got Miami, Florida.
Speaker:Uh, Florida state, Texas.
Speaker:, maybe even throw Nebraska in there, but you know, they've been down, , over the
Speaker:last five, 10 years here, but Penn state and LSU and Auburn probably are near.
Speaker:Maybe I'm missing another group there.
Speaker:Now I know some of you say, well, what about Clemson and Georgia
Speaker:these are top programs right now.
Speaker:But Clemson even before the last 10 years was not a top tier program.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Just because you have a decade where you're really hot doesn't mean that
Speaker:you're in leap program all time.
Speaker:If that was the case, then army.
Speaker:Which there'll be a top program cause they were bawling and way back in the day
Speaker:when it was Notre Dame, USC and Michigan.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:And so LSU.
Speaker:Is somewhere in that second tier of maybe third tier of all time.
Speaker:Programs and that's good.
Speaker:That's not bad.
Speaker:There really isn't you can still jump up into the top
Speaker:tier, but you're not right now.
Speaker:Now here's the thing LSU could, and in fact should be better.
Speaker:But there's a difference in your expectations.
Speaker:Or let me say this.
Speaker:There's a difference between could and should.
Speaker:In your expectations.
Speaker:You see, LSU could be a top five program every year with championship.
Speaker:Expectations and championships every decade.
Speaker:But that doesn't necessarily mean that you should expect to have championships.
Speaker:Every decade.
Speaker:That's not who you have always been.
Speaker:Now you've had some success.
Speaker:But to think that's who you are all time now.
Speaker:That's not logical.
Speaker:This is where you need some self awareness that we all need this to life.
Speaker:We all need to be self aware.
Speaker:Self awareness.
Speaker:This is like the guy who thinks that he should be dating somebody
Speaker:that that's on par Beyonce.
Speaker:That's their expectation, man.
Speaker:I should be dating some girl who liked Beyonce.
Speaker:However, RO you aren't that Jay Z in your field or life.
Speaker:And so you shouldn't be thinking, Hey, I should be dating me.
Speaker:I'd say when you were not at Jay Z over at your department.
Speaker:You got to have realistic expectations.
Speaker:You better step your game up.
Speaker:And go after that background singer.
Speaker:That's what you do.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:If you're not Jay Z, then you don't go try to holler at beyond two.
Speaker:You go and try to holler at the backup dancer because that's where your
Speaker:rat that's, that that's who you are.
Speaker:And there's nothing wrong with that, but just have some self-awareness.
Speaker:Again, I'm not sure if ETO is the guy.
Speaker:But all these programs and it's not just LSU, but I've seen this
Speaker:now with a number of programs, all these programs who expect.
Speaker:To win every year.
Speaker:But the last time you won a championship, Woodrow Wilson was the precedent.
Speaker:Now if that's you and your program, that means you have lost self-awareness.
Speaker:Look, could you become a top tier program that eventually one day
Speaker:will be a part of the elites?
Speaker:Yes, you could.
Speaker:But should you expect that that's the case right now?
Speaker:That's the problem.
Speaker:And so strive to be a top tier.
Speaker:But don't expect at anything less.
Speaker:Is unacceptable.
Speaker:And that's the problem when you think, man, we are winning the
Speaker:championship every other year, but.
Speaker:Here's the thing you've never won a championship every other year.
Speaker:Do you have no right then to think that your results are unrealistic.
Speaker:Or unacceptable.
Speaker:That's been who you are.
Speaker:So why do you put this unrealistic expectation on yourself and others?
Speaker:I mean, just be like the UCLA Bruins.
Speaker:They don't expect to be good at football.
Speaker:They don't.
Speaker:Because they never were.
Speaker:And you know what?
Speaker:They never should be.
Speaker:That's right.
Speaker:I said it.
Speaker:But I'll even say this look, I'm a USC fan.
Speaker:Now it's safe to expect to have a good basketball program at USC.
Speaker:We're right there.
Speaker:We have the resources we should expect to be good, but we're not
Speaker:foolish to think that we should fire coaches who don't make the final four
Speaker:every year, like duke and Kentucky.
Speaker:If we're measuring our success to duke and Kentucky, then we
Speaker:are foolish, blind and illogical.
Speaker:Because we, that's not who we have been.
Speaker:That's not what, who we have been in, in basketball.
Speaker:So we shouldn't have that expectation in LSU.
Speaker:You shouldn't have that expectation on yourself right now.
Speaker:Again, ETO might not be the guy and you might get the right guy in there.
Speaker:But go ahead and be self-aware.
Speaker:LSU calm down and realize that you're more like Jay-Z's cousin.
Speaker:And so there's nothing wrong with trying to date the backup singer to Beyonce.
Speaker:It's your boy Marcel hall.
Speaker:Tune into the next episode of the hallway podcast.
