Not dying, dead.

But here's what struck me.

No one's shocked about all this.

There are no protests, no outrage, just quiet acceptance of this.

We used to believe that hard work guaranteed upward mobility, that each generation would do better than the last, that a ladder to a better life was there for us all if we were willing to climb it.

I climbed it myself, from poverty through education, to the voice you hear now.

But I fear the rungs are disappearing for those behind me, and I worry about the generations to come.
