If you have ever scrolled Huron Facebook groups looking for a good nail tech, wished you did not have to drive to Sioux Falls for beauty services, or wondered how young women business owners are shaping the Huron beauty industry, this episode of the Huron Spotlight Podcast needs to be in your queue.

In this conversation, we sit down with Irie, a Huron SD cosmetologist who has built a growing, word of mouth beauty business in under a year by focusing on one simple goal. She wants every client who sits in her chair to walk out feeling confident and beautiful.

If you have searched for Huron SD nails, a local nail tech in Huron SD, or a cosmetologist who actually listens and cares about your natural nails, this is your peek behind the scenes of what it looks like to build that kind of business from the ground up.

Irie shares what it was like to graduate high school in 2021, try a more traditional college path, realize it was not for her, and then take the leap into cosmetology at Lake Area. She talks candidly about finding her place in Huron, honoring her Asian family’s expectations to stay close and support her parents, and still carving out a path as a young woman business owner in South Dakota. We also get into the real life side of starting a beauty business in a town like Huron, where the official population is around 14,000 but the surrounding rural communities make the reach much bigger. Irie describes those early months when she was brand new, did not know many people, and honestly thought there might only be a few hundred potential clients. We talk about how she used social media, Instagram tags, and client referrals instead of paid ads to slowly fill her books.

If you are curious how services like builder gel, hard gel, and GelX nails actually work, why they last longer, and why they are different from traditional acrylics, Irie breaks it down in regular person language. She also shares the part most people do not see. Taxes that are kicking her butt, trying to find work life balance when your brain never really shuts off, and the emotional relief of not having to walk into a job where a difficult coworker can ruin your day. Along the way, we zoom out and talk about culture, multigenerational living, and why so many immigrant families in Huron feel like they have cracked a code that many of us in more isolated western style households are still trying to figure out.

If you care about Huron small business stories, are curious about the Huron beauty services scene, or simply want to support a young woman who is quietly raising the bar for what is possible in our local beauty industry, this episode will give you a mix of heart, humor, and very real talk.

Tune in to the full conversation on the Huron Spotlight Podcast to hear Irie’s story, learn more about her services, and get a feel for why keeping talent like hers in Huron SD matters so much for our community.

can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to start your own business here in Huron?

Megan (:

on this

Ivy.

Malwina (:

I'm

Irie (:

Hi, I'm

Malwina (:

Irie and I'm a cosmetologist in Huron. I've been a cosmetologist for about a year. I started January and I'm loving it so far. I love it. I love everything I do. Yeah. So you graduated high school. We just talked about it before we started recording in 2021. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I took some gap year and then I tried.

Irie (:

Irie and I'm a cosmetologist in Huron. I've been a cosmetologist for about a year. I started January and I'm loving it so far. I love it. I love everything I do. So you graduated high school, we just talked about it before we started recording, in 2021. Yeah, I took some gap year and then I tried

Megan (:

you

you graduated from school with this.

So.

Malwina (:

Well, I tried physical therapy assistant online. That did not work well for me. But yeah, I quickly changed to cosmetology. So tell us why. What made you want to like go into the cosmetology? It was kind of like a like I wanted I wanted to try it. I had a lash artist that I used to go to and I wish she was still in business, but she's

It was kind of like a like I wanted I wanted to try it. I had a lash artist that I used to go to and I wish she was stil in business, but she's not

Megan (:

So.

Malwina (:

I was asking her if she liked what she was doing and all that and she said she did. I was like, did you pick that major for yourself? And she's like, no, I just tried it and I liked it. And I was like, hmm, maybe I should do that. And I did. And I enjoyed it. Okay. And so how long is like a cosmetology school?

Irie (:

asking she liked what she was doing and all that and she said she did. I was like, did you pick that major for yourself? And she's like, no, I just tried it and I liked it. And I was like, hmm, maybe I should do that. And I did. And I like enjoyed it. Okay. And so how long is like a smart pathology school?

Megan (:

asking her.

Irie (:

I don't even know, but

Megan (:

I'm really not.

Malwina (:

I don't even know. But ⁓

we had to get:

Irie (:

We had to get 1500 hours, either 1500 hours or 2100 hours is what I remember. Where did you go to school? Lake area. Yeah. Nice. That was going to be my guess. Okay. So when did you graduate that?

Megan (:

hours.

That was going to be my guess. ⁓

Malwina (:

trying to think. 24. Yeah, 24. And you jump right into like your own business and then that's... Okay, tell us more. I wanted to go, like after I graduated, I wanted to go to Sioux Falls and that was my plan. But my parents had other plans. Oh, parents. Yeah. I found a job.

Megan (:

I think 24.

Irie (:

trying to think. 24. Yeah, 24. And you jump right

into your own business and then that's... Oh, okay. 24. I wanted to go... After I graduated, I wanted to go to Sioux Falls and that was my plan. But my parents had other plans. Tall parents. I found a job.

Malwina (:

and everything, they were gonna hire me. And it was just like, it was set until my mom was like, you know, like stay with us, take care of us, you know, cause they're getting old and like in our Asian culture, we are usually more like family surrounding. Yeah. Yeah. That's why I'm here and Huron It is interesting because,

Irie (:

and everything, they were gonna hire me and it was like, it was set until my mom was like, you know, like stay with us, take care of us, you know, cause they're getting old and like in our Asian culture, we are usually more like family surrounding. Yeah. Yeah. That's why I'm here and Huron. It is interesting

Megan (:

So my mom.

You know, like...

next

way.

in Poland.

Malwina (:

In Poland actually, is

Irie (:

in Poland actually it is

maybe it is similar, I say maybe not very similar, but it is similar in a lot of ways that you'll see a lot of households have multi-generational living. So you have a house that has like two different essentially like I'll say maybe apartments or whatever, and you have the grandparents on the on the ground floor and then like the first floor is like the parents and you know and their kids and they like have this

this one big household, but actually you have two separate ones, but they look after each other. So that's interesting. Yeah, that's how it

Irie (:

that's one big household, but actually like two separate ones, but they look after each other. So that's interesting. Yeah, that's how it

Megan (:

But yeah.

Irie (:

I have like thoughts on this because I love comparing cultures. I've been a teacher in Huron for 14, this is my 14th year of teaching and I have always had students in my classroom who were Hispanic, Karen, obviously English speaking and then I mean there's a few others in there too like Vietnamese and a few others that I'm blanking on at the

Malwina (:

Irie (:

Megan (:

Spanish and Karen. I have always thought that our Asian family is like, I'm like, they haven't figured out because here I am an English mom with 30 kids. we're all like, our culture and families are all so separate. Like I literally live on a farm with me and my husband and my kids. And our in-laws are literally right across the yard, you know, in their own home. And then here we are,

Irie (:

Spanish and Karen. then I have always thought that our Asian family is like, my gosh, they haven't figured out. Cause here I am an English speaking mom with three kids and we're all like, our culture and families are also separate. Like I literally live on a farm with me and my husband and my kids and our in-laws are literally right across the yard, you know, in their own home. And then here we are like,

Malwina (:

me and my husband working, like we're both working

Irie (:

me and my husband working, like we're both working

Malwina (:

full time, our kids in school, daycare, whatever, and like always like figuring out what to do with the kids. And then I see like my family's at school where they like are supporting each other, but like all within their family and like the multi-generational living where like maybe the parents are working, but their grandparents are at home and the kids get home from school. And I'm just like, they have it figured out.

Irie (:

And then I see like my family's at school where they like are supporting each other but like all within their family and like multi-generational living where like parents are working but their grandparents are at home and I'm like the aunt would figure it out.

Why are we killing ourselves?

Malwina (:

Why are we killing ourselves? Like

Irie (:

Why are we killing ourselves? Like

Megan (:

We have to be so isolated and like that's just what our culture and society has gone towards but it like just makes sense even like financially stress-wise like why wouldn't we even when our parents age and we do need to take care of them like when they're in another house like that's a hard season too I mean I'm not there yet but it's like

Malwina (:

why do we have to be so isolated? And like, that's just what our culture and society has gone towards. But it like, it just makes sense. Even like financially, stress wise, like why wouldn't we? Even when our parents age and we do need to take care of them, like when they're in another house, like that's hard. That's a hard season too. I mean, I'm not there yet, but it's like, I just, I'm like, there's...

Irie (:

why do we have to be so isolated? And like, that's just what our culture and society has gone towards. But it like, it just makes sense. Even like financially, stress wise, like why wouldn't we, even when our parents age and we do need to take care of them, like when they're in another house, like that's hard. That's a hard season too. mean, I'm not there yet, but it's like, I just have like, there's, there's this really wonderful.

Malwina (:

There's just really wonderful

things about other cultures that I think if we open our eyes a little bit and see, there's good things to learn. Yeah, I totally agree. I have a similar situation. My in-laws are next door. like five minutes walking this. Yeah. But how much easier would it be? You know, but I feel like in my end, like I'm so like controlling.

Irie (:

things about other cultures that I think if we open our eyes a little bit and see there's good things to learn. Yeah, I totally agree. I have a similar situation. My in-laws are next door. It would be like five minutes walking in the sense. Yeah. But how much easier would it be? You know, but I feel like in my end, like I'm so like controlling.

Megan (:

and open our eyes a little bit and see. It's good things to learn. I totally agree. I have a similar time. have five minutes. Five minutes. Yeah. Yeah.

but how much you.

you know, but I feel like

playing

an environment. yeah.

Irie (:

my environment. would literally have to have, I would have to have two separate

Malwina (:

my environment. You would literally have to have, I would have to have two separate

houses within a house with two separate kitchens and like that kind of, because I think, and my husband always says, two women in one kitchen, you know, it's, it's, it's true. Like, it's- That's why there's people who have, have you seen people like-

Irie (:

houses within a house with two separate kitchens and like that kind of because I think and my husband always says two women in one kitchen you know it's it's and it's true like yeah it's that's why there's people who have have you seen people like

Megan (:

I think everyone has an old friend. Two women and one kid. That is true. That's why there's people who have... there's

Malwina (:

there's like compound living too. Yeah. that's that makes sense too, heck. Yeah. But it's like, maybe that's the best

Irie (:

there's like compound lipene too. Yeah. And that makes sense too, heck. Yeah. But it's like, maybe that's the best

Megan (:

like compounds living too. But it's like...

Malwina (:

of both worlds. Yeah. Yeah. And it's exactly what I feel like I'm in like a little bit of a compound myself because like, yeah, you know, my my daughter, she's five and she gets home from school and she's calling grandma. So grandma, you home? Yeah. Okay. Coming over. Yeah. Okay. Meet you in the back. Yeah. Yeah.

Irie (:

of both worlds. Yeah. Yeah. And it's exactly what I feel like I'm in like a little bit of a compound myself because like, you know, my daughter, she's five and she gets home from school and she's calling grandma. So grandma, you home? Yep. Okay. Coming over. Okay. Meet you in the back. Okay. Yep.

Megan (:

I'm very comfortable. Yup. Yup.

I always joke that we have this whole colony out there because like there's us on the farm, my family, my in-laws, or like my husband's parents right on the farm. A mile within a mile is another brother-in-law and sister-in-law to me. then just across the road there is another family too. And we all have kids and cousins.

Malwina (:

I always joke that we have the Smith colony out there because like there's us on the farm, my family, my in-laws, or like my husband's parents right on the farm, a mile, within a mile is another brother-in-law and sister-in-law to me. Irie (:

So I always joke that we have like a colony out there. So in a way, like because the traditional, I think traditionally culture's been.

and in some sort of like way they've done it. And then we, in the Western culture, we kind of split that, right? And then I think this is the very good like evidence how we are still trying to get into that like, village you have, that your own village there, you know, cause it makes sense. mean, it takes a village. Yeah. Yeah. And humans want connection, but not too much connection. Not too much.

Okay, back to you, Irie. We stole it.

Megan (:

Okay, back to you, Irene. We stole it. We stole it.

so when you first open your business, you tell us a little bit about what...

Malwina (:

Okay, so when you first opened your business, can you tell us a little bit about how

Irie (:

Okay, so when you first opened your business, you tell us a little bit about how

did that look like and what kind of struggles did that kind of cause? When I first even thought about it, I was so nervous. I was really, really scared. But I had my parents there, my family there for me. They were really, really supportive and my friends as well. Starting was slow.

And whenever they come to me, they're like, I used to go to, I used to go out of town because I never really find like the person to do this. Yeah. they would travel. Like people that like your work, they would travel for you.

Megan (:

We more people.

Whenever they told me to.

Mm.

Mm-hmm.

So when I...

Malwina (:

So we touched a little bit about like why Huron and because originally you said you wanted to like kind of base yourself out of Sioux Falls. then your parents and your family decided that this is going to be the place that you're gonna stay. Yeah.

probably a year into it.

Irie (:

I'm kind of glad that they brought me back here. Because I love my family and I don't think I can go a day without seeing them. Okay. Yeah, would be honestly, I would be super sad and kind of depressed if I was just in Sioux Falls all alone, no family. Yeah. Because I've always grown up with family. All around siblings, nieces and nephews, I have so much.

Malwina (:

Okay, so you said that in the beginning it was kinda slow, right? Because not a lot of people knew about you and that kinda stuff. ⁓ So, I am curious, at what point have you started seeing the shift and being more busy? ⁓ And what do you think has affected that?

Megan (:

and what do you.

Malwina (:

Probably like six months in, I started seeing that consistency of clients coming in. And I think it's because of my work, my skills, you know? Yeah. I totally agree. we have had this conversation multiple times with Irie every time I go see her. Is that you gotta post more. You gotta post more. I wanna see this on the feed. I wanna see it. Yeah, builder gel. I've seen that a lot on social media whenever I started. They just look more natural, you know? ⁓ And I like the look of it. I personally like the look of it. And that's why I started it. I started looking up videos on how to do it and the steps to do so and how to take care of them and all that. And yeah.

I started offering it. had some models at first and then I started offering it and they, they like it. you can use it on acrylic as well.

Okay.

So kind of similar to, I feel like, both are.

Malwina (:

⁓ can be soaked off

Irie (:

⁓ can be soaked off

Malwina (:

when it's not as thin or like you don't have to file it as thin to get it off. But they do this the same thing. Yeah. They, ⁓ build structure. because if anything chips, I pick at it, so.

Megan (:

So you

Malwina (:

So you

Irie (:

So you

Malwina (:

choose builder gel over acrylics because it looks more natural. Is that what you're saying? Yes, for me. And I mean like at school, we never really learned acrylic that much and I just, I can't get into it. I think it's the smell and...

offering ⁓ their gel X nails that I think there is a couple more in town that does that. ⁓ But I think a year ago if I would have gone somewhere they wouldn't even know what that was. The quality is like top-notch. It's not gonna be 30 minutes and you're gonna... ⁓

Malwina (:

And the quality is like top notch. Like it's not, it's not going to be 30 minutes and your nails are done. It's you're going to, you're going to spend a little bit more time on it, but their nails are going to stay

Malwina (:

for

Irie (:

for like, mine stay on for like five weeks and I just take them off because just so they grow out so much, but they can stay on longer. Like I have never had any issue that's crazy actually. That's sweet. So like the chipping nails that never happen to a part.

Malwina (:

like, mine stay on for like five weeks and I just take them off because just so they grow out so much, but they can stay on longer. Like I have never had any issue that's crazy actually. That's sweet. Yeah. So like the chipping nails, that never happens with her. Like that will not happen.

Megan (:

You can stay on.

That's sweet. Yeah. That's awesome. chipping nails, that never happens with her. Really? Really?

Irie (:

Really?

Megan (:

Okay, so here's my next few nails is like when they do start to grow out and come away, it doesn't ever, like, you know when it gets caught in your hair on the back side? Hers don't do that? And I suppose, like, every four months? I think you a good six months. Yeah.

Malwina (:

Okay, so here's my next thing with nails is like when they do start to grow out and come away, does it ever get, like, you know when it gets caught in your hair on the backside? Uh-huh, yeah. like when I was- don't do that? Don't do that. And I've been going to Irie for how long now? I mean, a good six months. Yeah. At least, right? Maybe more. Maybe more than that. ⁓ And that is a very common thing. Yes, they do, right? Like you get caught in, it's just,

Irie (:

Okay, so here's my next thing with nails is like when they do start to grow out and come away, does it ever get like, you know, when it gets caught in your hair on the backside? Uh-huh. And that is a very common thing. Yes, they do. Like you get them caught in. Yeah.

Malwina (:

yeah.

No, like this, I think this is three or four weeks actually, and they're not going to do it. Three or four weeks, that's impressive. Sweet. I know. So that is, so what you're saying is builder gel. This is combination. I have a combination because I had a gel X, which gel X is basically. Yeah, I don't know what that is either. I'm actually going to let her tell me about it because I'm not Explain to us like I'm five.

Irie (:

No, like this, I think this is three or four weeks actually and they're not going to do it. Three or four weeks. That's impressive. Sweet. I know. So that is that. So that what you're saying is builder gel. This is combination. I a combination because I had a gel X, which gel X is basically, don't know what that is either. I wish you couldn't tell her. Yeah. I'm not going to throw my five.

Megan (:

Yeah. Sweet.

Yeah, yeah, like I'm five.

Irie (:

Explain to us.

What GelX is? Because that's why I have GelX and then I grew out and then we were doing the builder gel fill. Yep. So GelX is basically like what I have on is GelX right now and it is basically like soft gel of like false nail and then you glue them on with like soft gel glue. think that's what it's called. And then you just I don't even know how to explain it but you just put them on there and they look like this.

Malwina (:

What gel X is? Because that's what I have. have gel X and then it grew out and then we were doing the builder gel fill. Yep. Megan (:

like, ⁓ wow.

it. ⁓

I didn't sign it, but.

Irie (:

You have to cure them with a lamp. There's a tiny little lamp. put them on. Yes, with LED lights. And then you just put them for a couple seconds. It cures basically you just put nails on. And then she did this little magic after. You just glue them on, file the sides. Yeah. Sweet. Do whatever nail art you want.

Malwina (:

You have to cure them with the lamp. There's a tiny little lamp. You put them on with LED light and then you just put them for a couple seconds. It cures And basically you just put nails on and then she did this magic afterwards. Just glue them on, file the sides. Sweet. Do whatever nail art you want.

Megan (:

Yeah.

So

We need it.

Malwina (:

That's awesome. So mine is a combination, but like.

Irie (:

So mine was a combination, but like.

Megan (:

Mine is a combination of both.

Malwina (:

So is your schedule mostly, do you do mostly nails or, cause honestly I only knew of Irie and nails. Like I just associated Irie with nails.
