Assess how feeling career stuck is impacting you across ten areas of life - in 30 minutes. Then, decide what you want to do about it.
-
If you’re constantly saying, “I don’t have enough time,” you’re not alone. But what if I told you that you don’t need more hours in the day—you just need a smarter way to use them?
Last week, I asked you to imagine what you’d do if you magically had an extra 30 minutes every day. This week, I’m showing you exactly how to create that time—without waking up earlier, working late, or sacrificing the things you love.
What will you do with your extra time? The choice is yours—but it all starts with making space for what truly matters.
Transcripts
Speaker:
You're busy, yeah?
Speaker:
There's never enough time to focus on your future work happiness, but
Speaker:
if you don't focus on it, things just stay the same, don't they?
Speaker:
In these short episodes, I want to give you some tiny ideas, some mini experiments
Speaker:
to try out this week to either dial down a pain point for you at work or
Speaker:
dial up your potential for joy at work.
Speaker:
Let's dive in.
Speaker:
Last week I asked you to think about what you could do if overnight you
Speaker:
were gifted 24 and a half hours in every day instead of the normal 24.
Speaker:
And I promised to give you some ideas to create 30 minutes extra in every day.
Speaker:
Here are seven little ideas.
Speaker:
And your joy at work experiment this week is to implement one of them.
Speaker:
Just doing one of them will give you 30 extra minutes a day this week.
Speaker:
Do all of them and who knows how many hours you can create this
Speaker:
week and the cumulative effect has the potential to blow your mind.
Speaker:
Number one, get clear on your mega watt hours.
Speaker:
Every day there are about three hours when you are at your absolute best.
Speaker:
Your peak energy focus and creativity.
Speaker:
Maybe it's early morning, like mine, before the world wakes up.
Speaker:
Or maybe it's late at night when everything quiets down.
Speaker:
Or something in between.
Speaker:
Find those three hours and block them out for your most important work.
Speaker:
The needle moving, future building, big thinking kind of work.
Speaker:
No distractions, no busy work.
Speaker:
Just you and your brilliance.
Speaker:
Number two, write down three needle shifting actions.
Speaker:
So instead of an overwhelming to do list or must do list or have to do list,
Speaker:
choose three meaningful, realistic, and achievable actions for today.
Speaker:
Not 10, not 20, three.
Speaker:
And here's the trick.
Speaker:
Tackle them during your megawatt hours.
Speaker:
You'll get more done in less time.
Speaker:
So you'll have more time for the fun stuff.
Speaker:
Number three, unsubscribe from newsletters you don't love, love, love.
Speaker:
Be honest, how much time do you spend deleting email newsletters you never read?
Speaker:
Stop the cycle right now.
Speaker:
Take a minute to unsubscribe from the ones that don't bring you joy.
Speaker:
So that's time back in your pocket every single day.
Speaker:
Now this one is an investment on day one that will repay
Speaker:
you for the rest of your life.
Speaker:
Number four, turn off noisy phone notifications.
Speaker:
PING!
Speaker:
New email.
Speaker:
PING!
Speaker:
New WhatsApp notification from the neighborhood group.
Speaker:
PING!
Speaker:
New Strava update from Dave.
Speaker:
Dear God.
Speaker:
We can't finish a single thought when our phone is constantly
Speaker:
demanding our attention.
Speaker:
And if you're an introvert like me, it's like kryptonite to our productivity.
Speaker:
Turn off all non essential notifications.
Speaker:
Do you really need to know about the neighbor's missing cat at 11am in
Speaker:
the middle of your megawatt hours?
Speaker:
You won't even notice this one until you see how much you
Speaker:
get done the very next day.
Speaker:
Number five, set up automatic focus modes.
Speaker:
This was a game changer for me and for many of my clients.
Speaker:
Most phones now let you create custom focus modes like do not
Speaker:
disturb, Work mode, sleep mode, that turn on automatically at
Speaker:
whatever time of the day you set.
Speaker:
Set them up once, and suddenly you are free from unnecessary interruptions,
Speaker:
without even thinking about it.
Speaker:
And if you only set up one mode, set up your mega watt mode?
Speaker:
Number six, cut meeting durations in half.
Speaker:
Have you ever noticed how meetings magically expand to fit
Speaker:
the time slot you've allocated?
Speaker:
So try this.
Speaker:
If your default meeting is one hour, change it to 30 minutes.
Speaker:
If it's 30 minutes, change it to 15.
Speaker:
Less time wasted equals more focus equals better meetings.
Speaker:
Equals more time to spend in your megawatt hours.
Speaker:
Equals more time shifting the needle on work that matters.
Speaker:
Equals More joy at work.
Speaker:
Number seven, never say yes immediately.
Speaker:
The next time someone asks you for your time pause, wait at least 60
Speaker:
minutes before giving an answer.
Speaker:
This tiny delay gives you space to consider, do I really
Speaker:
want or need to do this?
Speaker:
Does this fit with my needle shifting work.
Speaker:
It seems like a very tiny, tiny shift, but this tiny rule has changed my
Speaker:
life, my business, and my happiness.
Speaker:
I hope it does yours.
Speaker:
And there you have it, seven small shifts that free up time, not by
Speaker:
squeezing in more tasks, but by making space for what truly matters.
Speaker:
So what might you do with all this extra time?
Speaker:
If you enjoyed this, you might also enjoy my Life Satisfaction Assessment.
