Peter:

You're listening to the Tracking Wisdom Podcast, exploring the universal

2

:

truths that we see woven through culture,

consciousness, and the human experience.

3

:

Ryan: Morning everybody, and

welcome back to another episode

4

:

of the Tracking Wisdom Podcast.

5

:

I'm Ryan.

6

:

Peter: I'm Peter.

7

:

Ryan: Today we're discussing a short clip

from Rupert Spira's channel titled Why Am

8

:

I Not Excited About Non-Duality Anymore?

9

:

Peter and I haven't watched this

yet, so we're gonna listen to the

10

:

clip together, and then we'll respond

with our reactions and reflections.

11

:

Here we go

12

:

Michael: I feel that I am at a,

a empty point in my life and in

13

:

my understanding of the teaching.

14

:

And I'm sitting here hearing the teaching,

being in the meditation, everything

15

:

understood, but nothing touches me.

16

:

And it's not-- It's just

like everything was empty.

17

:

And I feel maybe it has to do with

age or something that I don't know.

18

:

So maybe it's this thing that

the old is not here anymore,

19

:

but the new not here yet.

20

:

And I'm sure maybe also, other

people might have experienced that

21

:

this wave movement of interest and

understanding and enthusiasm also,

22

:

and also joy to be in meditation.

23

:

You know, so this started

to, yeah, meditating.

24

:

Why not?

25

:

But also, why?

26

:

So, and I wanted to know if you have

any advice that you might give me.

27

:

Rupert: Michael, are you

at peace in yourself?

28

:

In general- Right … throughout

your day- I would say so … do,

29

:

do you feel, are you at peace?

30

:

Are, are you at rest?

31

:

Michael: I think so.

32

:

I mean, I'm here only

for loving and helping.

33

:

Also, not that I have to think about it.

34

:

Rupert: Yeah

35

:

… but the reason I ask if you're, if you're

at peace most of the time i- is that

36

:

it's true that when we first hear about,

I, and I know you've been familiar with

37

:

the, the non-dual understanding for,

for many years, but when we first hear

38

:

about non-dual, it, it's so exciting.

39

:

It's so elating.

40

:

We have, every day some

marvelous new breakthrough.

41

:

So to begin with, we often experience this

kind of heightened sense of, understanding

42

:

and appreciation and enthusiasm.

43

:

And because it's in contrast with the old

life of anxiety and sorrow, and suddenly

44

:

now there are these periods where there's

no sorrow, and there's no anxiety.

45

:

So, and it's elating.

46

:

It's exciting.

47

:

You're full of enthusiasm.

48

:

You're talking about it all the time.

49

:

You're reading about it all the time.

50

:

You're watching YouTube, going

to retreats, and it's exciting.

51

:

But after a while, it

becomes your natural state.

52

:

Michael: It is like this.

53

:

Rupert: Um, You don't talk

about it all the time.

54

:

You don't think about it all the time.

55

:

You're not elated about it all the time.

56

:

It's not a special experience

because you've kind of lost,

57

:

almost lost the memory of the old

sorrow and conflict and anxiety.

58

:

So you no longer have that

experience to contrast it with.

59

:

It's just your natural-

60

:

Michael: Wow

61

:

… Rupert: ease of being.

62

:

It's not, it's not bliss.

63

:

It's peace.

64

:

Or quiet joy, not, not ecstatic joy.

65

:

There mo- there may be moments of,

of exuber- But it, it's … That's

66

:

why I often refer to more and more

these days as a, I refer to quiet joy-

67

:

Michael: Mm

68

:

Rupert: rather than happiness.

69

:

Sometimes happiness feels like something

bubbly and elated and, ju- just quiet joy.

70

:

E- even that i- is, is too much.

71

:

Just … That's why I asked

you if you were at peace, not,

72

:

not whether you were happy.

73

:

Michael: I am at peace.

74

:

Rupert: Yes.

75

:

in a way, Life it's just gone back

to simplicity- Yeah … and peace.

76

:

Michael: Now, while you talk, this is

very helpful what you're telling me.

77

:

Thank you.

78

:

Ryan: I think I

misunderstood the thumbnail.

79

:

I thought the clip was gonna be,

um, Rupert explaining why he was no

80

:

longer excited about non-duality.

81

:

Peter: I was gonna say it was

much more intriguing when it was

82

:

Rupert asking the question, but in

fact he did answer the question.

83

:

I mean, w- we, I, I think that we s-

I wanted to start the video because

84

:

I wanted to hear why Rupert said he-

85

:

Ryan: Right

86

:

Peter: was not excited.

87

:

But then he did, ultimately he did say

I'm not excited anymore, and here's why.

88

:

Because it's just so-

89

:

Ryan: Normal

90

:

… Peter: commonplace, normal.

91

:

Ryan: Yeah.

92

:

Peter: Yeah.

93

:

Ryan: What's your experience with that?

94

:

Peter: Um-

95

:

I can easily be wound

up by the right contact.

96

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm.

97

:

Peter: Like, if someone is curious

about it, I will get really excited.

98

:

I feel like I'm probably not where

they're talking about, but I think by and

99

:

large, I'm much more relaxed about it-

100

:

Ryan: Mm

101

:

… Peter: than I was, say

for the first year or so.

102

:

Ryan: Yeah.

103

:

Peter: I mean, at the

beginning I was really thinking

104

:

about, "Oh, how can I move?"

105

:

You know?

106

:

" How can I progress?"

107

:

And I've only talked about progressing

recently in the context of not

108

:

being interested in progressing.

109

:

Ryan: Right.

110

:

Yeah, I feel like

111

:

I can appreciate this a bit.

112

:

It's I think I've shared this before,

but I might as well share it again.

113

:

I enjoy our work, I guess

to Rupert's point, right?

114

:

He thinks about it when he's on retreat-

Mm … or somebody asks a question.

115

:

But otherwise, he doesn't think about it.

116

:

I really don't think about it.

117

:

And not only do I not think about it,

often what I was finding was when we

118

:

were, or I was, whatever, consuming a lot-

119

:

Peter: Mm-hmm

120

:

… Ryan: it was actually

distracting from the experience.

121

:

Like, it almost got too in the

head that I was starting to lose

122

:

contact with the experience.

123

:

I appreciated Rupert's description

of joy and happiness because that's a

124

:

repeated comment of mine is this idea

of elation in contrast to the idea

125

:

of peace, or quiet joy as he put it.

126

:

Peter: Mm-hmm.

127

:

Ryan: And he even said even

that's a little too much, right?

128

:

So like this, this calm and peace

is what I experience and pursue,

129

:

and happiness or elation oftentimes

I experience as like an anxiety.

130

:

It's overstimulating to me.

131

:

Peter: So this is interesting

to me, 'cause y- you're touching

132

:

on my day-to-day experience.

133

:

Because what I was gonna do is I was

just about to walk back a little bit,

134

:

from what I said about it being normal,

compared to when I first experienced it.

135

:

I think compared to what

you were describing, I think

136

:

I'm not quite that far.

137

:

Ryan: Hmm.

138

:

Peter: And, like I still

get into, I wouldn't call it

139

:

ecstasy … I get into excited joy.

140

:

Ryan: Mm.

141

:

Peter: Because I find myself in

conditioned reactivity experience

142

:

so often, that I'm like, "Ugh,

oh, this is really suffering.

143

:

I'm still suffering."

144

:

Ryan: Mm.

145

:

Peter: "Where is the non-suffering?"

146

:

And then I find my way back.

147

:

And so, you know, I kind of say I

don't really meditate anymore…

148

:

except in groups.

149

:

Like I'll, I'll go to a group and there's

like a five-minute or t- 15-minute

150

:

meditation or something like that, which

is just part of the gathering, right?

151

:

And then the rest of it is

verbally shared experience.

152

:

Or the GAE, you know, I do that for

90 minutes once or twice a week.

153

:

But that's it.

154

:

And to me, that's not that much.

155

:

Like, you know, if you … For me,

if I'm not meditating every day, I'm

156

:

kind of like, "Yeah, I'm not really-

157

:

Ryan: Mm

158

:

… Peter: in formal practice anymore."

159

:

You know?

160

:

But what I have instead, I think, is

what you might call living meditation or-

161

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm

162

:

… Peter: it's like, "Oh,

why am I meditating?

163

:

Because I'm trying to find my

way back to peace because I can

164

:

recognize that I'm suffering."

165

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm.

166

:

Peter: And so I'm walking myself

home, and kind of re-exploring

167

:

what it's like to shift from

conditioned reactivity back to peace.

168

:

Ryan: Mm.

169

:

Peter: And along the way I

do a variety of practices.

170

:

It's kind of like whatever comes

to me- … is what the m- you know,

171

:

it could be, could be body scan, it

could be breathing, but it's never

172

:

like, oh, 15 minutes of breathing.

173

:

It's just like just a touch to remind

me, oh, I don't need to suffer.

174

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm.

175

:

Peter: So I guess to say, the

non-duality isn't so familiar

176

:

that I'm constantly there and not-

177

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm

178

:

… Peter: not interested and I

don't get excited about it.

179

:

But at the same time It's not something

that I elaborate on a lot to myself.

180

:

Ryan: Right

181

:

… I don't think about it

and I don't talk about it.

182

:

But when there is somebody who has a bit

of that recognition and is interested

183

:

in talking about it, I do enjoy

engaging in some of that conversation.

184

:

But that's rare.

185

:

Like, I feel like you have more

opportunities with that than I do.

186

:

Peter: Mm-hmm.

187

:

Ryan: Other than, you

know, when we're talking.

188

:

Yeah, I'm just trying to, focus

back on like the natural state.

189

:

Meaning, before we really started

getting deep into these conversations

190

:

a couple years ago, I had an

organic practice experience.

191

:

And then, when we came into contact

with, say, Jeffrey Martin's work

192

:

and understanding a vernacular and

a system behind to help describe and

193

:

understand the experience a little bit.

194

:

Peter: Mm-hmm.

195

:

Ryan: I think that was useful

in understanding the experience.

196

:

And I do think that going down

some of that more intellectual

197

:

stuff sorta distracted me a

little bit from the organic.

198

:

And I don't regret it, I don't

think it was a mistake at all.

199

:

Peter: Mm-hmm

200

:

. Ryan: And so now I'm trying to allow

myself to get back into the connection

201

:

with the natural being-ness that

had organically developed prior.

202

:

Peter: I find a lot of contextual clues

or environmental cues, I should say, not

203

:

clues, are extremely evocative for me now.

204

:

Like, being in the studio, talking to

you is like, that's all I do here, right?

205

:

And so it's very easy for me to

settle in and be deep with…

206

:

I mean, we don't pract- Mm-hmm We, we

don't, it's not like we sit down before

207

:

we get on the mic- … and like, "Let's

have a silent, you know, moment."

208

:

You know, I'm just here, like right now.

209

:

And, and talking about the experience

is very, very deep practice for me.

210

:

Ryan: Right.

211

:

Peter: So I'm feeling like right now

very, very tender and open and vulnerable.

212

:

And it's, it's what to

me is very familiar.

213

:

It, it's, it's very much the

quality of going deep, like

214

:

working with someone else.

215

:

But this is the thing, is that it's

become a very social thing for me.

216

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm.

217

:

Peter: I rarely am just by

myself and bring myself deep.

218

:

Is this not…

219

:

Is it rare?

220

:

It's not that rare.

221

:

I mean, I'm sure compared to

most people it's not rare at all.

222

:

But, um, it's, it's weird 'cause

I, in a way I'm comparing it

223

:

to when I had daily practice.

224

:

Ryan: Okay.

225

:

Peter: But when I had daily

practice, I hadn't really progressed-

226

:

Ryan: Right

227

:

… Peter: to a kind of awakening experience.

228

:

Yeah, so I'm kind of, have this kinda

confused view of what is normal for me.

229

:

Ryan: Mm.

230

:

Peter: Or what is rare or frequent.

231

:

Ryan: Right.

232

:

Peter: And it's like, wait,

isn't this guy a teacher?

233

:

Like, you know?

234

:

But, that, that's something that

I've also come across with teachers

235

:

is how much teachers suffer.

236

:

Ryan: Mm.

237

:

Peter: I mean, I, I really do feel

like Good teachers are bodhisattvas.

238

:

Ryan: Hmm.

239

:

Peter: In other words, they are,

enlightened beings who continue

240

:

to go through suffering for the

sake of helping, helping others.

241

:

Ryan: Right.

242

:

Peter: It's not that.

243

:

You're not seeking out suffering.

244

:

It's that you're willing to experience

the suffering, and you see the value

245

:

in having the experience because

you recognize how helpful that can

246

:

be to the next person you talk to.

247

:

Ryan: Hmm.

248

:

Peter: So first of all, I believe in

that as a practice personally, but

249

:

I'm also the beneficiary of that from

teachers who are willing to be open

250

:

and vulnerable about their, their own

251

:

suffering.

252

:

And it's not like, "Oh, I used to suffer,"

you know, "before I w- got awakened."

253

:

It's like, no, I know every day I can

go to the grocery store and be impatient

254

:

with people, like, "Get out of my way."

255

:

I mean, I'm not saying it, but- … you're

definitely having that experience of like,

256

:

"Why are you, these people bothering me?"

257

:

Because there's a way of accessing

compassion that comes through

258

:

being with your own suffering.

259

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm.

260

:

Peter: I'm not saying it's better,

'cause I don't think that's true at all.

261

:

You can also not really suffer very much.

262

:

You can also be more blissful and

then come into contact with suffering,

263

:

and the compassion will be there.

264

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm.

265

:

Peter: I think to be able to talk

specifically about this experience.

266

:

You know, like, "This

happened to me last week."

267

:

Right.

268

:

Not like, "Oh, yeah, I remember

when I used to be like that."

269

:

No, no, no, no, no.

270

:

You know, right?

271

:

And, and yet, and still model the

immediate presence of like, "Yeah,

272

:

right now I'm present for you.

273

:

Right now I am at peace, or right

now y- you can bring anything to me.

274

:

It is not triggering for me.

275

:

It is not too much for me."

276

:

Right?

277

:

So what am I saying about that?

278

:

I see for me the value in it.

279

:

Um, I'm … I, I basically know that

I have a lot of shadow work to do.

280

:

I have a lot of work with the

conditioning to do, and really

281

:

experiencing it is a very big part of it.

282

:

And so I appreciate that, and I'm not,

feeling sorry for myself and like, "Oh

283

:

my God, how much more work do I have

to do until I stop experiencing this?"

284

:

Which was absolutely the way I was

four years ago, three years ago, right?

285

:

Ryan: Right.

286

:

Yeah.

287

:

Peter: When I was, deep in practice

and like, "This isn't working," right?

288

:

Like, I believed in it, and I was

committed to it, the practice.

289

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm.

290

:

Peter: But there were times

when … it was just like, " Why am I-"

291

:

Ryan: Still suffering.

292

:

Peter: "How long is it gonna be?"

293

:

Ryan: Mm-hmm.

294

:

Peter: You know?

295

:

And then it comes up.

296

:

I mean, I've definitely had

this conversation in a group of,

297

:

"Yeah, what I'm wondering right

now is when does suffering stop?"

298

:

And then coming round to, well, it's okay.

299

:

It's just part of the experience

because we're still incarnated.

300

:

Ryan: Right.

301

:

Peter: So there's still

suffering, and, and it's fine.

302

:

And the, the return to

equanimity versus the "why me?"

303

:

Ryan: Right.

304

:

Peter: And so I guess what I'm saying is

it's that kind of sharing is so helpful.

305

:

I mean, it's helpful when

I hear peers share that.

306

:

And I ha- I have peers who I consider

so much more spacious than me, so

307

:

much more graceful than I am, and,

and then I, I see them suffering.

308

:

Ryan: Yeah.

309

:

Peter: You know?

310

:

And it's, like, really meaningful.

311

:

And it's not, it's not a

si- schaden- schadenfreude.

312

:

It's not like, "Oh, well, at

least they're suffering too."

313

:

You know?

314

:

It's like a, "Oh, I guess

they're not so much … You know,

315

:

I'm not so far behind them."

316

:

It's not that.

317

:

It's, coming back into contact with the

compassion towards the suffering, and then

318

:

also the recognition of the connectedness

and, and the community and the sameness-

319

:

Ryan: Mm

320

:

Peter: And , I'm hearing this come

back to me as kind of sounding

321

:

like an attachment to suffering.

322

:

Like, "oh, suffering's good.

323

:

" And it's it's not that.

324

:

It's just an appreciation

for the experience.

325

:

Ryan: Yeah

326

:

Peter: Anyway.

327

:

Well, that was interesting.

328

:

I hope that's helpful to someone.

329

:

Ryan: Indeed.

330

:

All right.

331

:

We'll talk to you next time.

332

:

Peter: All right.

333

:

Take care.

334

:

Thanks.

335

:

Ryan: Bye.

336

:

Peter: Bye-bye.
