Tammy Ulrich:
What if what makes parenting difficult isn't actually our kids' behaviors, but the mindset we bring to raising them? What if you could step into a mindset with the tools and the strategies that help bring greater ease and peace and joy to parenting. We're Tammy and Shannon, a mother-daughter duo here to support you on your parenting journey. I'm Tammy, an early childhood and parenting educator and a mom and a gammy.
Shannon Achilles:
And I'm Shannon. I'm Tammy's daughter, and I'm the mom to a very active little dude. We are both so excited to bring you the Guiding Parent Podcast. Mom, you've been working with kids and families seemingly forever, all of my life, anyways. What makes you so passionate about bringing the guiding mindset to parents?
Tammy Ulrich:
It really is my passion. Parenting has been my greatest joy, and it's also brought my greatest challenges, but I truly do believe that each child is an amazing, unique little being with unlimited potential and possibility. I want our kids to be understood and supported so that they can reach that potential and possibility, and to help parents make that possible, while also having more ease in navigating all of those inevitable challenges that we all face.
Shannon Achilles:
So, what are some of those challenges?
Tammy Ulrich:
You. No, you were adorable, but we certainly did have some moments, and you taught me a lot.
Shannon Achilles:
I like to joke that you worked the bugs out on my siblings and I, and we were raised with like the guiding mindset beta version, but having been raised this way and having grown up with my mom at her preschool, where I just kind of got to live and breathe this, and then also working with children as I got older, I've just absorbed so much of this philosophy, and now I'm a parent and I get to apply these principles in my relationship with my own son, I know when I get stuck, though, I still sometimes have to call my mom, and so we've been having these conversations for the entirety of my kids' life, and we're excited to now get to share them with you. I know my mom brings this amazing level of expertise and experience, and I get to bring you guys the you know parent in the trenches as we all tackle these everyday, you know, challenges that we all face, and over me, one of our biggest challenges has always been getting out the door in the morning. And you know, you
Shannon Achilles:
end up in a scenario where you've got your stuff and you've got kids' stuff, and got to get out the door. You're running late, and suddenly your child is freaking out because their socks are wrong, and so you end up in the scenario: Do I force the socks, or do I run upstairs and get a new pair of socks? And these are just the kinds of conversations I've been having with my mom.
Tammy Ulrich:
And these are just the kinds of things that we're going to be talking about. So you know, is it the socks? Is it a stalling tactic, or maybe it's both. Do they really need a different pair of socks, or just more confident guidance to get out the door? I
Shannon Achilles:
feel like they're little sharks sometimes. They can smell weakness, but for real, they know when you're waffling. And I know for my son, the socks really mattered, and so it was much quicker to just run upstairs and get another pair of socks.
Tammy Ulrich:
But does that mean you're giving in? It just depends, and it's all about knowing who your child is and what their real needs are. So we're going to be exploring the ins and outs of challenges just like this. I'm sure you can all relate. We've all been in some version of scenarios like this. So if you're looking for a better way to deal with these kinds of issues, to understand what's going on in those little minds and bodies, and to be able to confidently and intentionally navigate whatever arises, regardless of the situation, the age, or the stage, you're in the right place.
Shannon Achilles:
It takes a village, and we'd really like to be part of your village.
