Shownotes

What happens when a dedicated test pilot is suddenly grounded—not by mechanical failure, but by the unexpected call to become a caregiver?

In Final Approach, host Jonathan Knaul—a former Canadian Armed Forces tactical helicopter and test pilot, aerospace industry leader, and current test pilot instructor—shares his deeply personal and vulnerable story of navigating one of life’s most difficult transitions: caring for his aging mother with dementia while balancing a high-stakes career. What began as a sudden pivot away from the skies turned into a crash course in compassion, resilience, and the human side of caregiving.

But this podcast is about much more than one man’s story. It’s a space for conversation with others who live and work at the intersection of intense responsibility and deep emotional demands. From fellow pilots and first responders to doctors, military personnel, and others in high-pressure or life-threatening professions, Jonathan invites guests to explore the emotional terrain often hidden behind stoic professionalism.

In each episode, listeners are offered a rare glimpse behind the uniform, the title, or the role—revealing the vulnerabilities, triumphs, and human moments that shape those who spend their lives in service, danger, or constant decision-making. Whether it's managing a mission in combat or making an end-of-life decision for a loved one, the threads of courage, compassion, and character run parallel.

Through powerful storytelling and open dialogue, Final Approach examines themes such as:

  • Navigating unexpected life transitions with grace and grit
  • Preserving dignity in the face of decline and loss
  • The toll caregiving takes on professionals used to control and structure
  • Building resilience and finding renewal after burnout or grief
  • The cultural expectations around masculinity, stoicism, and vulnerability in high-risk professions
  • Generational stories of strength, including reflections from families with ties to the Holocaust and World War II’s tragic events.

Inspired by Jonathan’s memoir, Final Approach: A Test Pilot’s Story of Caring for Loved Ones, the podcast continues the conversation started in the book—offering not only a firsthand account of caregiving but a broader look at how people across demanding industries and circumstances care for others and, ultimately, themselves.

This show is for anyone who has faced the impossible decision, been caught off guard by life, or found themselves navigating a completely new identity. Whether you’re a caregiver, a professional in a high-stress job, or simply someone trying to reconcile your personal and professional life, you’ll find real stories, meaningful connections, and a reminder that even in our most difficult moments, we’re not alone.

Because sometimes, the hardest missions aren’t the ones we train for—they’re the ones we never see coming.

What happens when a dedicated test pilot is suddenly grounded not by mechanical failure, but by the unexpected call to become a caregiver? I'm Jonathan Nall. For over three decades, I served as a tactical helicopter and test pilot in the Canadian Armed Forces.

I've flown combat missions, worked in aerospace.

Leadership, and now train the next generation of test pilots. My life was built on structure, precision and control. But all of that changed when my mother was diagnosed with dementia. I found myself navigating a new kind of mission, one I had never trained for. Becoming her full time caregiver. It was a crash course in compassion, resilience, and the human side of decision making. And it was by far the hardest thing I've ever done. This is Final Approach, a podcast about what happens when life pulls us off course and challenges us to lead with heart instead of hierarchy.

But this show isn't just about my story. In each episode, I sit down with people who work in high stakes, high pressure environments. Pilots, first responders, military veterans, surgeons, and more.

People whose jobs demand quick thinking, composure, and strength. But behind every title and uniform is a human being with stories, struggles, and moments of grace. Together, we explore what it means to carry enormous responsibility while navigating life's most personal and vulnerable moments. We talk about caregiving, grief, burnout, resilience and identity. About preserving dignity in the face of decline. About cultural expectations, especially for those of.

Us taught to stay strong at all costs. You'll hear stories from people who've managed combat zones and trauma rooms, and also the quiet heartbreak of saying goodbye to a loved one. Final Approach is inspired by my memoir, Final Approach, a test pilot story of caring for loved ones. But this podcast is where the conversation expands. It's where we open up about the things we usually keep locked down. So whether you're a caregiver, someone in a high pressure career, or just trying to make sense of a life you didn't plan for, this space is for you. Because sometimes the hardest missions aren't the ones we train for. They're the ones we never see coming.
