“The Beast in the Rain”

Please enjoy:

by Sean Duroc Silva,

Please enjoy:

Part 1 of 2 I placed my shaky cloven hand against the glass,

Please enjoy:

watching the tiny streams of water trickle down the other side of the window like rolling teardrops.

Please enjoy:

They reminded me of her;

Please enjoy:

just like how everything else in this world had a strange way

Please enjoy:

of resembling Becky in one way or another.

Please enjoy:

Her smile, her laugh, or even the way her eyes sparkled when she woke up next to me in the morning.

Please enjoy:

But the rain… there was something so different about it.

Please enjoy:

Those tiny droplets of cascading water

Please enjoy:

were the only noise that still managed to haunt me,

Please enjoy:

with her muffled cries for help.

Please enjoy:

And I knew why. It was because the water carried the sound of his voice too.

Please enjoy:

The sound of the beast that swallowed her up

Please enjoy:

and devoured her soul; and he did it

Please enjoy:

on a night just like this one.

Please enjoy:

That’s why it wasn’t going to stop raining. Not tonight anyway.

Please enjoy:

Not with him out there.

Please enjoy:

I could hear his claws dancing on the rooftop,

Please enjoy:

filling the lobby with a low, rumbling growl that made the hairs stand up on my nape.

Please enjoy:

Then a wicked burst of light filled the horizon,

Please enjoy:

flashing momentarily before the beast

Please enjoy:

let out an echoing roar

Please enjoy:

that snaked its way to my drooping ears.

Please enjoy:

He was hungry tonight,

Please enjoy:

searching for another victim.

Please enjoy:

That’s when I knew

Please enjoy:

I’d have to go out there.

Please enjoy:

Somewhere, in that vast, dark ocean of streets and roads,

Please enjoy:

I was going to have to confront the monster, whether I wanted to or not.

Please enjoy:

“Shane?” God, I hated that name.

Please enjoy:

It felt so unnatural,

Please enjoy:

so… painfully human. It reminded me just how different I was every time I heard it.

Please enjoy:

I could smell Allison long before I heard her soft,

Please enjoy:

feminine voice call for me.

Please enjoy:

Her body actually had a pleasant scent,

Please enjoy:

like a crisp blend of faint spices

Please enjoy:

and a hint of vanilla that seemed to fill the entire room,

Please enjoy:

even from the other end of the hall.

Please enjoy:

I closed my eyes for a second,

Please enjoy:

listening to the sharp clicks of her heels against the tile floor as I breathed heavily out of my snout

Please enjoy:

and turned to meet her.

Please enjoy:

She was gazing at me with that glowing smile, and those perfectly innocent little blue eyes of hers.

Please enjoy:

No matter how much I hated to admit it,

Please enjoy:

Allison sure was pretty-

Please enjoy:

-for a human. “Are you okay?”

Please enjoy:

she asked, taking a moment to look up at the clock on the wall before she shifted her attention back to me.

Please enjoy:

“It’s nearly twenty after.

Please enjoy:

Is Stephenson making you work late again?”

Please enjoy:

I didn’t respond.

Please enjoy:

As usual, I couldn’t find the words,

Please enjoy:

and Allison took the opportunity to let her eyes wander.

Please enjoy:

It wasn’t her fault,

Please enjoy:

I suppose. They all did it.

Please enjoy:

She carefully inspected my porcine body,

Please enjoy:

looking it up and down like she was searching the shelves of a grocery store.

Please enjoy:

It made me feel naked;

Please enjoy:

and I couldn’t help glancing down just to make sure I was still fully clothed.

Please enjoy:

This must have been the way my ancestors felt during the auction at the county fair,

Please enjoy:

like a damn slab of meat.

Please enjoy:

My spine tingled as her examination continued to draw out, and I couldn’t help but wonder,

Please enjoy:

“What is she really looking at?

Please enjoy:

Are you sizing up my lungs?

Please enjoy:

My kidneys?” I realized that’s what we were engineered for to begin with, but Christ--the notion still made me cringe.

Please enjoy:

But I guess I should’ve been thankful that

Please enjoy:

human beings, in all their superior glory,

Please enjoy:

were kind enough to allow ethics to come into play somewhere during the process.

Please enjoy:

My knuckles popped

Please enjoy:

as I tightened my fists,

Please enjoy:

digging my hoofed fingers back into my palms.

Please enjoy:

I wasn’t sure how successful I was at hiding the grimace, because

Please enjoy:

what I really wanted to say was,

Please enjoy:

“You treated our sentience like some sort of goddamned afterthought!”

Please enjoy:

How… human of you.

Please enjoy:

But not Allison though,

Please enjoy:

she was different from the others.

Please enjoy:

When she looked at me, her face never showed that fake looking human concern I’d grown so accustomed to.

Please enjoy:

She was one of the good ones;

Please enjoy:

and even if I had a hard time admitting it to myself,

Please enjoy:

she didn’t deserve my bitterness.

Please enjoy:

I just wish I knew how to control it better.

Please enjoy:

“Shane? Earth to Shane, can you hear me?”

Please enjoy:

Allison questioned jokingly

Please enjoy:

as she waved her hand in front of my face.

Please enjoy:

I glanced over her tiny frame,

Please enjoy:

tracing those long strands of blonde hair and that light Caucasian skin till it disappeared into the elegant,

Please enjoy:

navy blue suit she was wearing.

Please enjoy:

Eventually my eyes traveled back up to hers,

Please enjoy:

and I shook my head slightly, attempting to bring my mind back up to speed.

Please enjoy:

I had to force myself not to grunt.

Please enjoy:

That seemed to bother them. Well, most of them anyway. “No, I--I’m fine,”

Please enjoy:

I muttered before glancing back at the wet windows.

Please enjoy:

“It’s just… you know…”

Please enjoy:

“Waiting for the storm to pass?”

Please enjoy:

I nodded. She sounded concerned,

Please enjoy:

and it made me want to respond, but the words just died in my mouth.

Please enjoy:

I was never good with pleasantries.

Please enjoy:

“You want a ride?”

Please enjoy:

“No. I’ll be okay.”

Please enjoy:

“You sure?” Again, I nodded.

Please enjoy:

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Allison.”

Please enjoy:

She smiled. “Just don’t stick around too late.

Please enjoy:

They might think you like it here.”

Please enjoy:

With that, she walked over to the door and opened it.

Please enjoy:

The wind howled and screamed,

Please enjoy:

echoing within the structure like the bellows of a wild animal trying to rip his way inside as Allison stood in the doorway with her umbrella in hand.

Please enjoy:

It made me shudder, and the

Please enjoy:

dark red hairs all over my body burned as they stood on end once more.

Please enjoy:

The glass windows seemed to match my trepidation

Please enjoy:

as I painstakingly watched Allison open her protective shield,

Please enjoy:

preparing to rush over to her car.

Please enjoy:

Then I heard the rain let out another wicked,

Please enjoy:

thundering snarl that rumbled through the tenebrous sky toward us.

Please enjoy:

It was as if the beast were trying to tell me he could smell the petite human getting closer,

Please enjoy:

and it made me feel like my hooves were about to fold up and curl back inside of me.

Please enjoy:

I knew something wasn’t right. I could feel it,

Please enjoy:

like ice water flowing through my veins

Please enjoy:

as I began to look at Allison

Please enjoy:

a bit differently.

Please enjoy:

Only it wasn’t Allison anymore-

Please enjoy:

-it was Becky. I nearly gasped when I saw her porcine body standing there in the doorway,

Please enjoy:

gazing back at me with those soft eyes and

Please enjoy:

that pure, white Yorkshire skin.

Please enjoy:

I almost called out her name, but Becky’s ethereal form soon faded from my mind,

Please enjoy:

leaving Allison to solely take her place at the entrance of the building.

Please enjoy:

I felt like I was starting to lose it,

Please enjoy:

and I had to blink my eyes several times,

Please enjoy:

hoping that it would get my head back on track.

Please enjoy:

There wasn’t much time to think though.

Please enjoy:

The beast had already made his intentions perfectly clear,

Please enjoy:

and I knew something was going to happen tonight.

Please enjoy:

But did that mean it was going to involve somebody else now; like this

Please enjoy:

tiny, blonde female who was standing in front of me?

Please enjoy:

There was only one way to find out.

Please enjoy:

“Allison--wait.” She looked at me from the open door,

Please enjoy:

her umbrella already outside and in harm's way.

Please enjoy:

The fabric was being assaulted by the relentless drumming of water as I stepped closer.

Please enjoy:

It gave me a nervous twinge I couldn’t hide.

Please enjoy:

I wanted her to come back inside where it was safe,

Please enjoy:

but I knew she wouldn’t understand.

Please enjoy:

Nobody would. “You…

Please enjoy:

you sure you don’t mind,”

Please enjoy:

I said coyly as my throat started to tighten.

Please enjoy:

The words felt like razor blades coming out,

Please enjoy:

nearly causing me to choke;

Please enjoy:

but Allison smiled

Please enjoy:

like only she could do

Please enjoy:

as she grabbed my cloven hand with those thin human digits of hers.

Please enjoy:

They felt so tender,

Please enjoy:

yet strangely inviting against my rough skin and coarse hair.

Please enjoy:

No matter how hard I tried, the faintest hint of a smile

Please enjoy:

managed to grace the edges of my mouth.

Please enjoy:

It felt weird. I hadn’t smiled in a long time.

Please enjoy:

“You ready?” Allison asked with a wink

Please enjoy:

as her eyes met mine.

Please enjoy:

It took a while, but I eventually nodded,

Please enjoy:

and we headed out the door.

Please enjoy:

I didn’t even try to get under the safety of her umbrella.

Please enjoy:

I just ran to the car as fast as I could, and Allison didn’t have a problem keeping up with me.

Please enjoy:

My hoofed feet cracked against the pavement,

Please enjoy:

but every few steps,

Please enjoy:

the snap of my hooves were silenced with a splash.

Please enjoy:

It was almost as if the rain had decided to come down harder just for me,

Please enjoy:

pounding on my stocky frame like a prisoner being beaten by his captors.

Please enjoy:

I didn’t give it the satisfaction.

Please enjoy:

I fought my way through the bombardment

Please enjoy:

and entered the safety of her vehicle,

Please enjoy:

slamming the door shut.

Please enjoy:

Allison quickly closed her umbrella and did the same,

Please enjoy:

dulling the noise outside

Please enjoy:

as she sealed herself inside the car.

Please enjoy:

I could have sworn I heard the beast roar as I glanced at the roof of her vehicle.

Please enjoy:

The water continued to pelt the car,

Please enjoy:

and it sounded like somebody was

Please enjoy:

vigorously tapping their claws across the metal.

Please enjoy:

I breathed another sigh of relief

Please enjoy:

and leaned back in the seat, trying to give myself a moment’s peace from the cacophony outside.

Please enjoy:

That’s when I heard Allison

Please enjoy:

began to chuckle.

Please enjoy:

I shifted to the driver’s side, where she was trying not to stare at me.

Please enjoy:

I was probably burning holes through her with my eyes,

Please enjoy:

because she forced herself to stop giggling

Please enjoy:

as she settled into her seat. “Sorry,

Please enjoy:

it’s just that…” Allison started to say as she tossed her umbrella in the back.

Please enjoy:

I didn’t have to ask,

Please enjoy:

“What?” I did it with a simple twitch of my floppy ears, and surprisingly,

Please enjoy:

Allison seemed to understand.

Please enjoy:

She reached across the car

Please enjoy:

and flipped the visor down on my side, exposing the mirror behind it.

Please enjoy:

I hesitated, but lifted my head ever so slightly to see my reflection.

Please enjoy:

She started laughing again.

Please enjoy:

I looked soggy. The hair all over my face and snout was dripping wet,

Please enjoy:

and I felt like a soaker hose that was running full blast and perspiring all over the floorboard.

Please enjoy:

I twitched my nose and wiped the water away from my snout

Please enjoy:

as I let out a disgusted grunt.

Please enjoy:

I didn’t say another word as I relaxed my body against the now slightly damp seat.

Please enjoy:

It was time to get this over with,

Please enjoy:

and Allison seemed to figure it out on her own.

Please enjoy:

She put the key into the ignition,

Please enjoy:

fired the car’s engine,

Please enjoy:

and started driving

Please enjoy:

deeper into the storm. >*<

Please enjoy:

This was a mistake.

Please enjoy:

I shouldn’t have got in the car with Allison,

Please enjoy:

and it seemed like everything around us was trying to tell me that.

Please enjoy:

The wipers sounded exhausted,

Please enjoy:

straining to keep up with the thin layer of water that was blurring the window.

Please enjoy:

I could barely see,

Please enjoy:

and Allison didn’t seem to be faring much better as she leaned forward,

Please enjoy:

her head hovering

Please enjoy:

just over the steering wheel.

Please enjoy:

The vehicles that sailed by us in the opposite lane

Please enjoy:

looked like nothing more than vague shadows with glowing eyes

Please enjoy:

as they streaked through the night,

Please enjoy:

only to be consumed by the looming darkness that trailed behind us.

Please enjoy:

I tried to ignore it all by narrowing my eyes and shifting my focus toward the dark,

Please enjoy:

uninviting road. Yet all it did was help me avoid the blinding sheen of the oncoming headlights. “Ain’t

Please enjoy:

this somethin’?”

Please enjoy:

Allison chimed in

Please enjoy:

as she made a quick glance at me.

Please enjoy:

“I haven’t seen it rain like this in a long, long time.”

Please enjoy:

I saw her look at me out of the corner of my eye,

Please enjoy:

and I nearly answered with,

Please enjoy:

“I have,” but I remained stoic,

Please enjoy:

glaring out the car’s front window.

Please enjoy:

“You don’t like to

Please enjoy:

talk much… do you?”

Please enjoy:

The ensuing pause

Please enjoy:

seemed to draw out for hours, and I’m still not sure why,

Please enjoy:

but I eventually gave in with a heavy,

Please enjoy:

almost painful sounding,

Please enjoy:

“No.” I thought it would discourage her, but it didn’t work.

Please enjoy:

“Shane… is something wrong?

Please enjoy:

Because you look

Please enjoy:

really, really tense.”

Please enjoy:

The exasperated grunt

Please enjoy:

just seemed to be the natural response. I couldn’t hold it back.

Please enjoy:

“Does it have something to do with the weather?”

Please enjoy:

That made me stir,

Please enjoy:

and my body finally started working in unison as I shifted to look at Allison.

Please enjoy:

She was persistent;

Please enjoy:

I’ll give her that much.

Please enjoy:

“I just don’t like the rain, that’s all.

Please enjoy:

It bothers me.” I could tell she was trying to pull together an appropriate response.

Please enjoy:

Something sincere that wouldn’t sound offensive.

Please enjoy:

She didn’t give herself enough time.

Please enjoy:

“Is it an animal thing?”

Please enjoy:

I nearly laughed, but it came out like a quiet,

Please enjoy:

uncomfortable sounding squeal.

Please enjoy:

“No… actually--it’s more of a human thing.”

Please enjoy:

I noticed her grip the steering wheel a little tighter

Please enjoy:

as an abrupt flood of rain started rattling against the roof of the car like a child wailing on a demonic bongo drum.

Please enjoy:

It made my heart stumble.

Please enjoy:

I sucked in a breath

Please enjoy:

as my curly tail began to twitch inside my jeans,

Please enjoy:

forcing me to shift in the seat.

Please enjoy:

I needed something to concentrate on, something to take my mind away,

Please enjoy:

and I couldn’t help looking back at the cars that were speeding toward us from the opposite direction.

Please enjoy:

Then I saw it. A blurred message was glaring at us from the side of the road.

Please enjoy:

I squinted, struggling to see the flashing mobile billboard

Please enjoy:

that read, “Road Closed Ahead.

Please enjoy:

Use Detour.” “It looks like we’re gonna have to take the long way around,” Allison said,

Please enjoy:

attempting to sound upbeat with her positive tone of voice.

Please enjoy:

I wasn’t nearly as calm.

Please enjoy:

Don’t make me do this.

Please enjoy:

Please God… don’t make us go down two-forty.

Please enjoy:

I heard a rattling inside the car, and it took me a moment to realize

Please enjoy:

it was my hoof clacking against the floorboard

Please enjoy:

as if the carpet wasn’t even there.

Please enjoy:

The nervous twinge slithered up my body, and the door handle let out a strained creak as I tightened my hand around it.

Please enjoy:

I thought it was going to snap off as we came to the stop sign.

Please enjoy:

The large, yellow arrow stared at me from the middle of the intersection,

Please enjoy:

telling me exactly what I feared.

Please enjoy:

It was pointing me

Please enjoy:

back to her accident;

Please enjoy:

to the place where the rain had sprung to life and swallowed my Becky’s soul.

Please enjoy:

My ears flicked at the hammering clatter of the water,

Please enjoy:

which was echoing inside the car

Please enjoy:

and matching my quivering heartbeat.

Please enjoy:

The beast knew I was close,

Please enjoy:

and he called to me with another crack of thunder that blasted the sky.

Please enjoy:

It made me jump in the seat, which startled Allison and

Please enjoy:

momentarily paralyzed her.

Please enjoy:

My lungs began to heave

Please enjoy:

and I inhaled deeply,

Please enjoy:

hoarding what air I could

Please enjoy:

as if I were taking my last breath before plunging into the ocean.

Please enjoy:

Thankfully, no one was behind us, because it seemed to take forever

Please enjoy:

for Allison to finally step on the gas pedal

Please enjoy:

so the car could creep onto route two-forty.

Please enjoy:

For a moment, I thought my shakes would never subside.

Please enjoy:

“Shane…” Allison muttered nervously,

Please enjoy:

glancing at me from the sides of her eyes.

Please enjoy:

Her voice was strained now. Fearful.

Please enjoy:

And the last thing I needed was to have her frightened while she was driving the car.

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry about that,”

Please enjoy:

I quickly answered as I took in a deep,

Please enjoy:

soothing breath. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

Please enjoy:

I could tell she wasn’t pleased with my response,

Please enjoy:

so she dug deeper.

Please enjoy:

“Di… did something happen to you, Shane?

Please enjoy:

Something you’re not telling me?”

Please enjoy:

Her tone was still apprehensive,

Please enjoy:

and even though I didn’t want to speak,

Please enjoy:

I knew I was going to have to.

Please enjoy:

“Yeah. Something did happen.

Please enjoy:

Something I’ve never told anyone.”

Please enjoy:

“Well… yo--you can tell me. If you want to.”

Please enjoy:

I managed a nod.

Please enjoy:

Even with all the water pelting the outside of the vehicle, my mouth suddenly felt as dry as a desert;

Please enjoy:

and it seemed as if the words were raking across my tongue on the way out.

Please enjoy:

Everything started to hurt, but I still wanted to answer her.

Please enjoy:

I needed to. “It actually happened here-

Please enjoy:

-on this road. And it was raining just like it is now…

Please enjoy:

when I lost her.” “Her?”

Please enjoy:

I closed my eyes and nodded.

Please enjoy:

“Her name was Becky.

Please enjoy:

And she was my…” I couldn’t finish the thought, but it didn’t matter.

Please enjoy:

I had already opened the door.

Please enjoy:

The events of that night flashed in my mind like a ubiquitous burst of light,

Please enjoy:

making my eyes sting.

Please enjoy:

I tried to hide behind my eyelids, but it only made the images seem clearer.

Please enjoy:

I saw myself standing there again

Please enjoy:

as they pulled her vehicle out of the water

Please enjoy:

and removed her lifeless husk from the car.

Please enjoy:

And then there was the rain.

Please enjoy:

Oh God, that rain.

Please enjoy:

It just wouldn’t stop.

Please enjoy:

He wouldn’t let it stop.

Please enjoy:

I inhaled a ragged, painful sniffle

Please enjoy:

in an attempt to stifle the pending sob.

Please enjoy:

I hated it when that happened.

Please enjoy:

Our instincts didn’t understand the need for tears,

Please enjoy:

and when anthros started to cry, the brain naturally tried to fight off the confused animal instincts like an infection,

Please enjoy:

causing a jagged ache

Please enjoy:

to pierce through our brains.

Please enjoy:

It made my snout twitch.

Please enjoy:

I had to blink back the sadness,

Please enjoy:

wiping away the stray tears with my shaky hand

Please enjoy:

before I was finally able to continue talking.

Please enjoy:

I was surprised how easy it came after that.

Please enjoy:

I swallowed the lump in my throat,

Please enjoy:

and the words just started

Please enjoy:

pouring out. “She drowned.

Please enjoy:

She lost control of her vehicle and it went into the canal.

Please enjoy:

The one that runs along the road just up ahead.

Please enjoy:

They’re not exactly sure what happened but they…

Please enjoy:

they think maybe she was trying to avoid something.

Please enjoy:

Like an animal or… I-

Please enjoy:

-I don’t know what.

Please enjoy:

But the police said that if…

Please enjoy:

if it weren’t for the wet conditions that night,

Please enjoy:

they think she might’ve…”

Please enjoy:

I paused, my eyes dropping into my lap.

Please enjoy:

“My God, I… I’m so sorry.”

Please enjoy:

I straightened myself up in the seat,

Please enjoy:

rolling my shoulders in a failed attempt to hide the pain.

Please enjoy:

It never worked. “It’s fine, Allison. That happened nearly two years ago now… and

Please enjoy:

I guess I… I need to learn to get over it.”

Please enjoy:

“Shane--you don’t get over something like that.

Please enjoy:

It’s no wonder you’re so tense. I’d be too.”

Please enjoy:

“Yeah, well--it’s still no excuse to be scared of the rain.

Please enjoy:

Not like it’s coming after me or anything.”

Please enjoy:

After less than a mile, the pitch of the tires changed.

Please enjoy:

We were crossing the bridge,

Please enjoy:

and the beast knew it

Please enjoy:

as he greeted me with a low, cackling grumble.

Please enjoy:

My heart sank into my gut,

Please enjoy:

and when the vehicle came in contact with solid pavement once again,

Please enjoy:

I couldn’t help but glance to my right.

Please enjoy:

Our headlights caught the reflectors on the newly installed guard rail,

Please enjoy:

making it stand out like a makeshift grave stone.

Please enjoy:

I could see the water running parallel with the road behind it,

Please enjoy:

like a long, scaly dragon chasing after the car.

Please enjoy:

I shivered in my seat

Please enjoy:

and turned back to the thumping wipers, which still couldn’t keep up with the pouring rain.

Please enjoy:

I wanted us to go faster.

Please enjoy:

I wanted to get away from the beast while he was lying dormant,

Please enjoy:

but a single red light glared at us in the distance,

Please enjoy:

growing bigger as we approached.

Please enjoy:

The wet brakes squealed as Allison

Please enjoy:

stopped the vehicle at the T-shaped intersection.

Please enjoy:

My teeth were chattering.

Please enjoy:

The red hairs on my neck stood on end,

Please enjoy:

and the spasm in my shoulders ripped at my muscles so violently,

Please enjoy:

I couldn’t hold back the aching grunt.

Please enjoy:

It felt as if Becky were attempting to reach out and claw me with her hoofed fingers,

Please enjoy:

trying to escape from her watery prison

Please enjoy:

which was no less than twenty feet away from the car.

Please enjoy:

I couldn’t even bear to look at the water;

Please enjoy:

for fear that it might lunge forward and grab me

Please enjoy:

just like it did her.

Please enjoy:

I peered through the wet front window,

Please enjoy:

staring at the car that was waiting in the opposite lane across the intersection.

Please enjoy:

It was difficult to tell in the heavy rain,

Please enjoy:

but the driver looked like a young anthro feline,

Please enjoy:

which made me relax just a little bit.

Please enjoy:

I hadn’t seen many of them around.

Please enjoy:

They were a newer creation,

Please enjoy:

engineered toward the end of the organ harvesting fiasco,

Please enjoy:

and mostly for cosmetic purposes.

Please enjoy:

Swine weren’t exactly considered aesthetically appealing,

Please enjoy:

and humans seemed much more inclined to buy a heart or a kidney from a more glamorous looking cat or canine anthro.

Please enjoy:

I cringed at the thought,

Please enjoy:

but at least it took my mind off the rain for a moment.

Please enjoy:

I blinked my eyes several times, trying to see through the layer of water that blurred everything

Please enjoy:

as if I had just woken up from a deep sleep.

Please enjoy:

I knew it was just in my head,

Please enjoy:

but God, that cat reminded me of Becky.

Please enjoy:

Then again, everyone seemed to look like her on days like this.

Please enjoy:

But why did it feel so different this time?

Please enjoy:

And why did it feel

Please enjoy:

like Becky was trying to tell me something?

Please enjoy:

That’s when the light turned green.

Please enjoy:

The feline across from us didn’t hesitate, but we did.

Please enjoy:

I made sure of it.

Please enjoy:

I reached over with my trembling hand and grabbed Allison’s arm.

Please enjoy:

My legs were stiff;

Please enjoy:

and my hoofed feet cramped up

Please enjoy:

as I pressed them into the floorboard, like I was trying to reach for an invisible brake pedal on my side of the car.

Please enjoy:

It delayed us for only a second,

Please enjoy:

but that was all we needed.

Please enjoy:

From our left, a blazing pair of headlights pierced through the darkness,

Please enjoy:

illuminating the gold fur of the young feline as if she were caught in the rays of a giant spotlight.

Please enjoy:

She was in the middle of the intersection,

Please enjoy:

looking at the oncoming truck

Please enjoy:

and watching its glaring beams

Please enjoy:

grow brighter and bigger in her vision.

Please enjoy:

It looked like she opened her mouth to scream, but it was already too late.

Please enjoy:

There was nothing any of us could do to stop it.

Please enjoy:

The massive vehicle sped through its red light

Please enjoy:

and careened into the side of the cat’s vehicle,

Please enjoy:

as if God were playing billiards with the two automobiles.

Please enjoy:

They erupted upon impact,

Please enjoy:

spraying wet shrapnel in all directions

Please enjoy:

that pelted the window of Allison’s car even harder than the huge droplets of rain.

Please enjoy:

The heavy truck barely even jumped as it drove the feline’s much smaller car through the intersection.

Please enjoy:

Metal popped and crunched like agonizing screams as the two vehicles went sliding in front of ours,

Please enjoy:

heading towards the canal.

Please enjoy:

The truck finally came to rest,

Please enjoy:

but the tires on the other vehicle squealed

Please enjoy:

as it continued across the wet pavement

Please enjoy:

and banged into the low guard rail.

Please enjoy:

The momentum flipped the car onto its side,

Please enjoy:

causing the barricade to buckle like a flimsy piece of caution tape

Please enjoy:

as the vehicle rolled over the top of the metal guard rail.

Please enjoy:

Then I watched as the cat’s vehicle flipped once

Please enjoy:

down the embankment,

Please enjoy:

partially crinkling like a soda can before it plunged into the water

Please enjoy:

upside down. I quietly let out the word,

Please enjoy:

“No,” but the events had already been set in motion.

Please enjoy:

She was in his grasp now,

Please enjoy:

and the beast could smell blood

Please enjoy:

as he started coming to life.

Please enjoy:

His wet fangs slapped and splashed against the vehicle,

Please enjoy:

pulling it under as he attempted to swallow the car whole

Please enjoy:

like a snake trying to ingest an egg.

Please enjoy:

I was frozen in my seat,

Please enjoy:

watching the carnage unfold

Please enjoy:

until Allison finally grabbed my shoulder

Please enjoy:

and jarred me from my fixed trance.

Please enjoy:

By then, the car was almost completely submerged.

Please enjoy:

I expected to wake up at any second.

Please enjoy:

I figured this was all in my head and the beast would eventually just

Please enjoy:

go away and everything would be fine.

Please enjoy:

It had to be a bad dream;

Please enjoy:

but as the rain continued to pour down from the clouds

Please enjoy:

and time kept rolling by,

Please enjoy:

I knew it wasn’t a nightmare.

Please enjoy:

That feline was going to die,

Please enjoy:

just like my Becky did.

Please enjoy:

“Call 9-1-1,”

Please enjoy:

I said to Allison before stepping out of the car.

Please enjoy:

She hesitated for a moment,

Please enjoy:

unsure of how to respond.

Please enjoy:

I could smell the fear radiating off her body, just like mine was.

Please enjoy:

“Shane--wait.” “Do it!

Please enjoy:

Now!” She muttered something back to me,

Please enjoy:

but the downpour silenced her with a deafening rumble

Please enjoy:

as I started running toward the sunken car.

Please enjoy:

I watched the canal bounce in my vision,

Please enjoy:

growing more and more imposing with each step that drew

Please enjoy:

me closer to the water.

Please enjoy:

I think the rain could sense what I was doing,

Please enjoy:

because it started pounding on my body as I bounded over Becky’s broken metal tombstone

Please enjoy:

and ran within ten feet of the monster’s mouth.

Please enjoy:

I breathed in deep,

Please enjoy:

filling my lungs with life

Please enjoy:

while I sucked in some of the water that was dripping off my snout.

Please enjoy:

I told myself I would never go near the beast after the accident,

Please enjoy:

but now I was actually going inside-

Please enjoy:

-and I was doing so willingly.
