The Shift Beneath the Words:

  • The personal journey behind the Guiding Mindset
  • Why Tammy and Shannon started the podcast together
  • The philosophy of parenting with greater ease, peace, and joy
  • Why today's parents need a different approach

Tammy discusses how many parents either repeat the way they were raised or swing to the opposite extreme. She argues that today's children need a new parenting mindset—one focused on understanding children's needs, building healthy relationships, and using practical, compassionate strategies rather than control or permissiveness.

Speaker:

Welcome to the Guiding Parent Podcast,

Speaker:

where you'll find the mindset and tools

Speaker:

to parent with greater confidence, clarity, and purpose,

Speaker:

even when there aren't any easy answers.

Speaker:

Together, we're going to explore

Speaker:

how to better nurture and guide our children,

Speaker:

to support who they are and who they're becoming,

Speaker:

so that they can fulfill their unique potential

Speaker:

and thrive in our ever-changing world.

Speaker:

I'm Tammy Ulrich, your host,

Speaker:

parenting and early childhood educator,

Speaker:

mom, and most fun, Gammy.

Speaker:

And I'm Shannon, your co-host.

Speaker:

I'm Tammy's daughter and mom

Speaker:

to a very energetic little dude called H.

Speaker:

We're glad you're here.

Speaker:

Let's get started.

Speaker:

Welcome to our very first podcast.

Speaker:

We're so excited that you're here.

Speaker:

If you're looking for a better way

Speaker:

to nurture and raise your child,

Speaker:

to understand what's going on

Speaker:

in those little minds and bodies,

Speaker:

and to be able to confidently and intentionally

Speaker:

navigate whatever arises,

Speaker:

regardless of the situation, the age, or the stage,

Speaker:

you're in the right place.

Speaker:

We're here to support you on your parenting journey.

Speaker:

In these first couple of episodes,

Speaker:

we're gonna share a little bit about ourselves

Speaker:

and some of our own journey,

Speaker:

and a bit of an overview of the guiding mindset principles

Speaker:

that support our becoming guiding parents.

Speaker:

So you can get to know us a little bit

Speaker:

and the framework that we apply to parenting.

Speaker:

Then in future episodes,

Speaker:

we'll be all about navigating those parenting moments

Speaker:

that we all share with practical tools

Speaker:

that allow us to parent with greater ease, peace, and joy.

Speaker:

So mom, can you tell us what brought you

Speaker:

to this moment of starting a podcast?

Speaker:

Oh, I've been working with children and families forever

Speaker:

for most of my life, 40 plus years.

Speaker:

And I am absolutely passionate

Speaker:

about making a difference for children and families.

Speaker:

I truly do believe that each child

Speaker:

is just this amazing little being

Speaker:

with unlimited potential and possibility.

Speaker:

And I just think how different we would all be,

Speaker:

how different our world would be

Speaker:

if we grew up with our needs met,

Speaker:

able to be our full selves,

Speaker:

and fulfill that vast potential

Speaker:

that we all come into the world with.

Speaker:

And so that's what I want for our kids.

Speaker:

You know, I've wanted to work with kids

Speaker:

as long as I can remember,

Speaker:

you know, start a school someday.

Speaker:

Except for that brief little time

Speaker:

when I was gonna be a ballerina.

Speaker:

But other than that, you know, that's been my dream.

Speaker:

And I grew up a Montessori child.

Speaker:

My dad was an educator

Speaker:

and he was actually the administrator

Speaker:

of the Montessori school that I went to.

Speaker:

And so then later when I went to college,

Speaker:

I got reintroduced to Montessori

Speaker:

and the instructor in those courses is just my mentor.

Speaker:

She was incredible and she is really the one

Speaker:

that just passed that flame, so to speak.

Speaker:

So, you know, I was taking her classes

Speaker:

and, you know, this was it.

Speaker:

You know, this was the direction I was gonna go.

Speaker:

And then I got my first job and I got fired.

Speaker:

So I was devastated.

Speaker:

It's like, oh my God, you know,

Speaker:

this is what I'm supposed to do.

Speaker:

And I, you know, I got fired.

Speaker:

And thankfully for Nancy,

Speaker:

she, you know, she was like, nope, that's not the issue.

Speaker:

So the reason I got fired was because we had

Speaker:

a little spicy boy who just, you know,

Speaker:

didn't do what he was supposed to

Speaker:

and was kind of the problem child.

Speaker:

So they took me and a couple other of the adults

Speaker:

into this small little room

Speaker:

and I was supposed to talk to this child.

Speaker:

So I got down on his level and I talked to him.

Speaker:

And instead of doing what they expected of me,

Speaker:

I failed to make him understand that I was the boss

Speaker:

and, you know, be very clear on how he was to behave

Speaker:

and who was the boss here.

Speaker:

And so they fired me.

Speaker:

But it also was one of my very first experiences

Speaker:

was seeing that the way we've been raising

Speaker:

and educating our kids, it isn't ideal.

Speaker:

It's not, you know, that's how so many of us were raised.

Speaker:

How so many of us see parenting is, you know,

Speaker:

we've got to let kids know we're the boss

Speaker:

and this is, they need to do what they're told.

Speaker:

But, you know, in this situation,

Speaker:

nobody was trying to understand the child.

Speaker:

Nobody was trying to figure out what's going on with him.

Speaker:

Instead it was just make sure he knows who's boss.

Speaker:

So luckily Nancy was there

Speaker:

and she actually hired me to work at her school.

Speaker:

And which was an amazing experience

Speaker:

and I went on to work at other schools.

Speaker:

And then you came along Shannon

Speaker:

and, you know, still I had this dream

Speaker:

that I was gonna have this school

Speaker:

but now I had to balance, okay,

Speaker:

now I've got this little person,

Speaker:

so how am I gonna be a mom?

Speaker:

And launch this dream at the same time.

Speaker:

But it all came together and I started Child's View

Speaker:

where I was the administrator and everything else,

Speaker:

teacher, janitor, you know, bottle washer,

Speaker:

all the things for 24 years,

Speaker:

working with children and families.

Speaker:

And along the way, you know,

Speaker:

your little brother came along

Speaker:

and, you know, I felt like you guys

Speaker:

were pretty much raised at the school.

Speaker:

We kind of almost lived there.

Speaker:

Then, you know, along the way I became a single mom

Speaker:

and so that was a whole nother experience.

Speaker:

And I remarried, got two more wonderful kids

Speaker:

out of the deal.

Speaker:

But now I was navigating co-parenting

Speaker:

and was able to see the perspective

Speaker:

of both the custodial parent and the non-custodial parent.

Speaker:

And so that's, you know, that was a very eye-opening

Speaker:

and helps to really consider with empathy

Speaker:

what we're all going through in those kind of situations.

Speaker:

But, you know, all the way along we had the school

Speaker:

and it was really cool because

Speaker:

all of the kids worked at the school

Speaker:

at some time or another.

Speaker:

They either went to the school

Speaker:

or they worked at the school in some way.

Speaker:

And one of my very favorite times

Speaker:

was when the summer when you were finally old enough

Speaker:

to be a true assistant.

Speaker:

And so you were my assistant

Speaker:

and we had your brother as our,

Speaker:

he wasn't old enough,

Speaker:

but he was too old for the summer elementary program.

Speaker:

So he was our aid or, you know,

Speaker:

he thought of it more as he was the gopher.

Speaker:

So I got to work this whole summer with the two of you

Speaker:

and it was just so amazing.

Speaker:

And, you know, you were like the best assistant

Speaker:

that I ever had in all of that time.

Speaker:

But anyway, since finally the time came

Speaker:

for me to leave Child's View

Speaker:

and since leaving Child's View

Speaker:

I've been teaching early childhood education

Speaker:

and parenting courses at a local community college

Speaker:

and facilitating courses and workshops

Speaker:

for both parents and educators,

Speaker:

as well as consulting and doing some parent coaching.

Speaker:

Started the Guiding Mindset to support parents

Speaker:

as well as a sister site for educators

Speaker:

called Educating the Essence.

Speaker:

Now I'm also working on the Guiding Parent book

Speaker:

that will be out soon.

Speaker:

And so now here we are

Speaker:

and I'm so excited that we're launching

Speaker:

this podcast together.

Speaker:

So I know you're excited about this too.

Speaker:

What brings you to this moment?

Speaker:

So, I mean, obviously you just said like

Speaker:

this has been your philosophy since before I existed.

Speaker:

And so I kind of joke,

Speaker:

like I got the beta version of the Guiding Mindset

Speaker:

before it had a name, before it was fully fleshed out.

Speaker:

And so, yeah, being parented this way

Speaker:

makes me really passionate

Speaker:

about making sure that other parents are aware

Speaker:

of this kind of a parenting philosophy.

Speaker:

This is how I parent my own child.

Speaker:

And I'm able to see just kind of the difference

Speaker:

in my parenting peers

Speaker:

and how sometimes they're meeting challenges

Speaker:

or struggling and seeing if they just had

Speaker:

a little bit more information,

Speaker:

the difference that it could potentially make.

Speaker:

But I still have times where I have to call my mommy

Speaker:

and mom, walk me through this.

Speaker:

How do I better handle this particular scenario?

Speaker:

And so, yeah, I mean, we literally have these conversations

Speaker:

weekly, if not more frequently.

Speaker:

And so it feels like the podcast

Speaker:

is just sort of an extension of these conversations

Speaker:

that we're already having

Speaker:

as I navigate my own parenting journey.

Speaker:

And to me, it's really important that,

Speaker:

again, my parenting peers have access to information

Speaker:

that can really help ease their process of being a parent

Speaker:

and just their family culture and all of that

Speaker:

can be a little bit more easeful.

Speaker:

And I want my kid to grow up with peers

Speaker:

that are well-adjusted

Speaker:

and have had positive parenting.

Speaker:

And I love my mom.

Speaker:

So I'm here to support her.

Speaker:

And I love that we get to do this together.

Speaker:

Me too.

Speaker:

I'm really excited.

Speaker:

You mentioned having greater ease

Speaker:

and that's really something that

Speaker:

the guiding mindset is all about.

Speaker:

That's kind of our thing is that

Speaker:

you'll be able to parent with greater ease, peace and joy.

Speaker:

I think it's really important that we differentiate

Speaker:

between ease and easy.

Speaker:

I mean, parenting is hard.

Speaker:

It's not easy.

Speaker:

So ease doesn't mean that,

Speaker:

all of a sudden it's gonna be easy peasy

Speaker:

and no more challenges or troubles.

Speaker:

It means you'll just have a whole lot less flailing around

Speaker:

wondering what the heck do I do now

Speaker:

or going down the wrong direction

Speaker:

that just causes you more difficulty

Speaker:

and more stress and angst.

Speaker:

So thinking about those other pieces,

Speaker:

we have ease, peace and joy.

Speaker:

Having that peace just reflects

Speaker:

that we're gonna have a sense of calm,

Speaker:

less struggle, less conflict,

Speaker:

as well as that's also something that's possible

Speaker:

for ourselves in our world

Speaker:

is to have a more peaceful feeling.

Speaker:

I believe when kids have this ability

Speaker:

to be raised in this way.

Speaker:

And I really want to see so much joy

Speaker:

being brought to parents

Speaker:

so that we're actually enjoying our children

Speaker:

and enjoying our lives together.

Speaker:

So the difference really is that it's not necessarily easy,

Speaker:

but we know what to do.

Speaker:

And so we still have those challenges,

Speaker:

but we can work through them

Speaker:

with intention and with confidence.

Speaker:

I feel like, yeah, you can totally love your child.

Speaker:

You can love parenting and still be exhausted by it,

Speaker:

still find it challenging.

Speaker:

There's obviously, I think for every parent,

Speaker:

there's times of the day,

Speaker:

there's different things that you just don't love.

Speaker:

I know for me, like don't love bedtime transition,

Speaker:

but that one has been one that,

Speaker:

for my kids entire life has been a dicey part of our day.

Speaker:

And so we're hoping that we can help you move

Speaker:

from dreading those kinds of times

Speaker:

of your parenting journey

Speaker:

into just having them be another part of your day.

Speaker:

Maybe it never becomes your favorite part of the day,

Speaker:

but it's not something that you have to dread anymore.

Speaker:

Right, absolutely.

Speaker:

Yeah, I feel like also, our world has changed so much

Speaker:

and we need to change with it.

Speaker:

So many of us were parented

Speaker:

with kind of this old way of thinking

Speaker:

and those ideals just really don't work anymore

Speaker:

in today's world.

Speaker:

Or we didn't like how we were parented,

Speaker:

so we've gone in exactly the opposite direction,

Speaker:

which hasn't worked either.

Speaker:

So we really need a different type of mindset.

Speaker:

So this just gives us the opportunity to have conversations

Speaker:

so we can better understand what our kids need.

Speaker:

So they'll be successful in today's world.

Speaker:

And that also, how we can deal

Speaker:

with today's parenting challenges

Speaker:

with practical strategies and tools.

Speaker:

As we change and nurture and guide our kids,

Speaker:

we change what's possible for them,

Speaker:

for ourselves and ultimately the world.

Speaker:

So it takes a village

Speaker:

and we just really wanna be a part of your village.

Speaker:

We're really lucky my mom has this amazing experience

Speaker:

and expertise on early childhood

Speaker:

and family structures and all of that.

Speaker:

For this entirety of her career,

Speaker:

I really feel like she's been advocating for kids

Speaker:

and what they need and creating circumstances

Speaker:

for the best amount of their development

Speaker:

to ensure that they really can become

Speaker:

the best versions of themselves.

Speaker:

She's got four kiddos included and now two grandbabies.

Speaker:

Who aren't really babies anymore.

Speaker:

That's true.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

You know, and you've been living this, you know,

Speaker:

but the thing about it is you're right there in the trenches.

Speaker:

You know, you're living and breathing this

Speaker:

every single day.

Speaker:

So, you know, you bring those real challenges

Speaker:

that parents are experiencing every day.

Speaker:

So we get to work through them together

Speaker:

and together we'll find solutions

Speaker:

that fits everybody involved.

Speaker:

The child, the family, and the child and the parents

Speaker:

and the family as a whole.

Speaker:

So that everybody's needs are met.

Speaker:

And, you know, it's not just about how do we make,

Speaker:

you know, do things for our child

Speaker:

or not thinking about them and just doing what parents want,

Speaker:

but really making a nice cohesive way that, you know,

Speaker:

where the whole family is supported

Speaker:

and is having their needs met.

Speaker:

So next episode, we're going to dig briefly

Speaker:

into what those guiding mindset principles are.

Speaker:

And then you'll have those to kind of,

Speaker:

as kind of a reference.

Speaker:

And then all the upcoming episodes,

Speaker:

we're going to dig right into the issues

Speaker:

and challenges that we all deal with.

Speaker:

So we hope you'll join our village

Speaker:

and join the conversation.

Speaker:

Let us know what you want to talk about,

Speaker:

because, you know, we want to talk about

Speaker:

what you want to hear and what those difficulties are

Speaker:

that you're experiencing.

Speaker:

So give us your parenting challenges

Speaker:

and you'll find all the links in the show notes

Speaker:

to follow along and subscribe.

Speaker:

We'll see you next episode.
