On June 30, 1908, an asteroid or comet exploded high above Siberia, creating the largest impact event in recorded history. The Tunguska explosion flattened an estimated 80 million trees across more than 800 square miles but left no impact crater. Scientists continue studying the event to better understand future asteroid threats.
