Shownotes

The podcast has officially rebranded and been renamed to 'Podcasting for Indie Podcasters!'

In this episode, I'll discuss exactly why I decided to ditch the old name of The Lazy Girl's Guide to Podcasting and embrace something that's more inclusive and SEO-friendly: Podcasting for Indie Podcasters.

When you start a podcast, one of the last things on your mind is rebranding. But as your show grows, evolves, and you as a podcaster develop, you start to think about how your current branding might actually be hindering how you can grow your podcast and reach a wider audience. And that's exactly where I was: hosting a podcast that I love, but unsure if the name was the right fit anymore.

We dive deep into why I was feeling that the old name was right for the show anymore, including connotations with the word 'lazy,' VAWg micro-aggressions, and how the show seems to have evolved out of that name. Keeping the old name was also making me concerned that I was eliminating people from listening to the show and was stunting my podcast's growth by not being inclusive. I also discuss the new branding in terms of cover art and colours.

Finally, we move onto discussing the revamp of the blog that goes with the podcast and I'll tell you all about what to expect from the podcast in 2026.

Checklist for Rebranding Your Podcast:

  1. Why are you rebranding?
  2. Renaming your show - research, search intent
  3. Colours/images
  4. Updating your show's name everywhere (doesn't have to be done in one go)
  5. Sharing this change with your audience (email, social media, etc)

Takeaways:

  1. Rebranding is a big deal, and it’s okay to rethink your podcast's identity as your audience grows and changes.
  2. Choose a podcast title that reflects your content and appeals to your target audience, ensuring it's searchable and relevant.
  3. Don't rush your rebranding process; take your time to ensure every detail feels just right before making it official.
  4. Make sure your rebranded podcast maintains cohesion across all platforms, from social media to your website, for a consistent listener experience.
  5. Engage with your audience about your rebrand; their feedback can help shape your podcast's future and build a community.
  6. Rebranding isn't just about looks; it's about capturing the essence of what your podcast is truly about and who it serves.

Speaker A:

Hello everybody.

Speaker A:

And I'm not entirely sure how to open up the show with whether or not I just say welcome back to the Lazy Girl Guide to Podcasting or whether or not to say welcome to Podcasting for Indie Podcasters.

Speaker A:

Because you may have noticed that the podcast has rebranded.

Speaker A:

I have created a. Yeah.

Speaker A:

Completely new brand for the podcast and we are renaming it.

Speaker A:

So hello, I'm Verity.

Speaker A:

Forgot to introduce myself there, that was a bit of a faux pas at the beginning of an episode.

Speaker A:

But hello, I'm Verity and welcome to.

Speaker A:

To Podcasting for Indie Podcasters.

Speaker A:

I wanted to have this episode to just have a chat with you about rebranding the podcast, why I'd done it, and how you can also go through your own rebrand if you feel that that is relevant for you.

Speaker A:

So first of all, why have I rebranded?

Speaker A:

casting has been around since:

Speaker A:

Something like that.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So fast to be.

Speaker A:

Because we're in:

Speaker A:

So podcast been going about two, two and a half years, something like that.

Speaker A:

Which is absolutely incredible.

Speaker A:

We've episodes, we've got thousands of listeners around the world.

Speaker A:

It never ceases to amaze me whenever I look at podcast analytics, the countries that people listen to this show from.

Speaker A:

And I absolutely love that.

Speaker A:

So thank you so much.

Speaker A:

Wherever in the world you are listening from, especially I have realized in the last couple of months the city with the biggest listenership is Los Angeles, which is incredible.

Speaker A:

I've never been to la.

Speaker A:

I would love to go to la.

Speaker A:

I'm watching Selling Sunset at the moment, so I'm really getting to California vibes.

Speaker A:

Watch Selling the OC before that.

Speaker A:

I hope you don't end up judging me knowing what I watch on TV now.

Speaker A:

But the point is, I would love to go to la and I love that the city with the biggest listenership for this podcast at the moment is Los Angeles.

Speaker A:

I think that's really, really cool.

Speaker A:

But regardless of where you are in the world, I really, really appreciate you tuning in and listening to the podcast.

Speaker A:

You really make this show what it is.

Speaker A:

I love the emails saying how this show has helped other people with their podcast and giving people the confidence and the tools that they need in order to develop their own podcast and show.

Speaker A:

So thank you so much for that.

Speaker A:

But as I the show's been going about two and a half ish years at this point and when I set up the Lazy Girl Guide to Podcasting, I had this idea that I knew what I wanted the podcast to be about.

Speaker A:

I podcasting about podcasting, but I had no idea what to name it.

Speaker A:

And I think I mentioned on an earlier episode of the show that I did have a conversation with somebody and she had been saying to me, I really want to start a podcast.

Speaker A:

I essentially just need the Lazy Girls Guide for it.

Speaker A:

And I was like, bam.

Speaker A:

That's it.

Speaker A:

That is the name of the podcast, Lazy Girls Guide to podcasting.

Speaker A:

And in:

Speaker A:

Loved the name of the podcast and I have done for a long time.

Speaker A:

But in the last couple of months, I've just been having a lot of thoughts to myself as to whether or not calling it Lazy Girl's Guide to Podcasting was the right thing for the show.

Speaker A:

And I had a few different reasons around this.

Speaker A:

First of all, Lazy Girl, I wasn't sure whether or not it was giving the right vibes.

Speaker A:

I'm going to be completely honest with you because I think that, first of all, people who listen to the show are not lazy in the slightest, and I don't think any of them would identify as being a girl because this audience is adults, primarily females.

Speaker A:

We do have a male audience as well.

Speaker A:

I'll come on to that in a minute.

Speaker A:

But I wasn't sure whether or not Lazy Girl was actually giving the right vibe to the podcast because nobody who listens to the show, as I said, is lazy at all.

Speaker A:

If you run a podcast, you were definitely not lazy because you're probably doing it all by yourself.

Speaker A:

And there's a lot that goes into doing a podcast or being a podcaster.

Speaker A:

So I just wasn't sure whether or not having the work word lazy in there was the right thing to do.

Speaker A:

I also wasn't sure whether or not having the word girl in there.

Speaker A:

Didn't know whether or not it was.

Speaker A:

I don't know.

Speaker A:

You might completely disagree with me, but I wasn't sure whether or not it was a bit derogatory, considering it's women that tend to listen to this podcast and not girls.

Speaker A:

And I don't know, there were just.

Speaker A:

There were so many question marks around it.

Speaker A:

Also, on the flip side of that, I've also got a male audience to this podcast, and again, I wasn't sure whether or not calling it Lazy Girl was actually then relevant to the male audience.

Speaker A:

I don't know, I just ended up with a lot of questions.

Speaker A:

I think there's also been a lot in the news recently about Vorg, which is violence against women and girls.

Speaker A:

There's been a lot of conversation, I think, publicly, around vorg microaggressions as well, and I wasn't sure whether or not.

Speaker A:

Well, it's not being not sure.

Speaker A:

I wasn't sure if there was a conversation really to be had around whether or not the whole lazy girl thing actually fed into a vorg microaggression.

Speaker A:

I don't know, maybe I'm really overthinking it, but you get my point.

Speaker A:

I've just been having a lot of thoughts in my head that I didn't think that Lazy Girl Guide podcasting was fitting the show's ethos anymore.

Speaker A:

Also, I'm hosting a show.

Speaker A:

I don't identify as being a lazy girl.

Speaker A:

So if I don't open identifies being a lazy girl, why on earth should I be calling my own show that?

Speaker A:

Just, I don't know.

Speaker A:

Like I said, a hell of a lot of questions.

Speaker A:

So I've gone through this entire process of really thinking what should I be calling the show?

Speaker A:

Thinking about where my audience is at, who is it that I'm targeting, who listens to the show, what do people need from the show, etc.

Speaker A:

And I ended up, I kept coming back to the point that I wanted the word podcasting in the title.

Speaker A:

I wanted it right near the beginning because from an SEO search point of view, I wanted people to be searching podcasting and it just be really bloody obvious what the podcast is about.

Speaker A:

And then I was really wanting something as well that qualified people to be looking at the title of the show and thinking, yes, this show is definitely for me.

Speaker A:

So podcasting and then it's for indie podcasters.

Speaker A:

Was I 100% happy with the fact that I had podcasting and podcasters in the title?

Speaker A:

Title?

Speaker A:

No, not 100%, but I went back and forth with quite a few different titles.

Speaker A:

I looked at the Indie Guide to Podcasting and Podcasters Guides Fear Indie Creators.

Speaker A:

I looked at loads of different things, but I kept coming back to Podcasting for Indie Podcasters and I was like, you know what if I keep coming back to that?

Speaker A:

Let's just land on that.

Speaker A:

If it's still that in a year time, great.

Speaker A:

If I change it, then whatever, it's work in progress.

Speaker A:

And you know, it's just about continually evolving really, isn't it?

Speaker A:

And just, just considering to myself, where is the show at in the moment and what's relevant for the show?

Speaker A:

What's relevant for me?

Speaker A:

So the podcast has officially been rebranded to Podcasting for Indie Podcasters.

Speaker A:

I then looked at the coloring.

Speaker A:

You'll Notice that the colors have changed a little bit as well.

Speaker A:

Not too much, but it's a bit more jumpy outy when you're looking at it in the search image is exactly the same when you look at the podcast artwork.

Speaker A:

And then the other thing that I've done as part of this rebrand is I've really overhauled my website.

Speaker A:

This has taken me what feels like ages.

Speaker A:

It's been a great project.

Speaker A:

I love website building.

Speaker A:

I've been building websites since Front Page was a thing.

Speaker A:

And if anyone runs Front Page, then probably showing your age a little bit.

Speaker A:

And I'm probably giving away how old I am as well.

Speaker A:

I've written blogs for over seven years now at this stage.

Speaker A:

This is my longest running blog.

Speaker A:

The one that I've got with all of the podcast information on it.

Speaker A:

It's@veritysongone.com at the moment.

Speaker A:

I'm considering whether or not I switch that over or whether or not I just leave the URL as it is.

Speaker A:

Because if we switch the URL back creates its own host of issues in terms of redirect.

Speaker A:

But we will wait and see.

Speaker A:

But what I was doing was I went through all of the blog posts on that, all 140odd.

Speaker A:

so much content on there from:

Speaker A:

But my blogging skills have evolved, my podcasting skills have evolved.

Speaker A:

So I'm updating.

Speaker A:

I'm going through and updating well over 100 blog posts, finishing writing out a load of draft ones as well, and creating loads of podcast episodes for blog posts, which I had the information there as a blog post, but I didn't have a podcast episode that went with it.

Speaker A:

So I was like, well, I'm kind of doing myself a disservice here by trying to create content and coming up with content ideas, when actually I've got blog posts that need podcast episodes that can go with them.

Speaker A:

That's where I'm going with that.

Speaker A:

So website has been completely overhauled.

Speaker A:

I absolutely love it.

Speaker A:

There's still work in progress, but I'd love it if you wanted to go over and check it out and let me know your feedback on it.

Speaker A:

But yeah, I'm really, really loving the website as it is and I think that's going to be my real thing that I focus on.

Speaker A:

2024 was the year where I really focused on building up the newsletter.

Speaker A:

2025 that lay by the roadside slightly.

Speaker A:

But I'm back on track for that now.

Speaker A:

And:

Speaker A:

So the main things I think that I want to across in this podcast episode because I always like to give you takeaway points for the for the show so that it's useful for you.

Speaker A:

And if you are thinking about rebranding your show, what I would recommend is first of all, consider to yourself, why is it that you want to rebrand?

Speaker A:

Is it that something's just feeling off or is it be that you're bored with the show?

Speaker A:

Like what is it you're bored with the show title?

Speaker A:

Whatever.

Speaker A:

What is it that's making you want to rebrand?

Speaker A:

Second, remember that it's not just about colors.

Speaker A:

A lot of people seem to think that rebranding just means shoving a few new colors on something.

Speaker A:

And it's not.

Speaker A:

It's what those colors convey.

Speaker A:

Are they cohesive?

Speaker A:

What feelings and emotions do those colors convey as well?

Speaker A:

The next thing is about the actual title of your show in your tagline, making sure that there are keywords, searchable keywords within that tagline and title as well.

Speaker A:

And it's not just about the keywords you think that your audience is searching for, but what is it that they are actually searching for?

Speaker A:

The fourth thing is don't rush the process.

Speaker A:

As I said, I've gone backwards and forwards many, many times on particularly the name of the podcast when it comes to rebranding it.

Speaker A:

So don't be afraid to spend a bit of time, go back and forth and don't be worried to experiment.

Speaker A:

Sit with something for a few hours or a few days and think.

Speaker A:

Not too sure what I think about that.

Speaker A:

If you have a title, go across to Canva or Adobe, whatever it is you use to create your artwork and actually make up some mock ups because you might find that actually you rested on a title.

Speaker A:

But when you start mocking up, it just, it doesn't look right.

Speaker A:

Like the weighting of the words doesn't look right.

Speaker A:

And also finally, before you go forward with a rebrand, make sure that you are happy with it because it's your podcast.

Speaker A:

At the end of the day, make sure that everything is cohesive across all of those different platforms that you're using.

Speaker A:

So if you've got a social media presence, if you've got a newsletter, if you've got a website, just make sure there's cohesion so that people don't turn off A one and think that they're in completely the wrong place.

Speaker A:

Something else.

Speaker A:

Oh, and actually finally tell people about your rebrand.

Speaker A:

So as I'm doing this episode right now and telling everybody that the podcast is no longer called Lazy Girls Guide to Podcasting and it is now Podcasting for Indie Podcasters.

Speaker A:

Make sure that you are telling people so that people are aware of that change as well and ask for feedback.

Speaker A:

So I'd love it when I send out the newsletter.

Speaker A:

Whilst for this episode, let me know what you think the rebrand, I would really like to know whether or not it resonates with you.

Speaker A:

If you think it was a waste of time, if you thought it was a good idea.

Speaker A:

Whatever your thoughts, I would genuinely love to know.

Speaker A:

So as ever, thank you so much for being here for this podcast episode with me.

Speaker A:

Speaker A:
