Josh Kalsbeek:

Words of Wisdom 140 on False Empowerment I've been reflecting

2

:

on the subtle yet significant

difficulties of transformation.

3

:

One of the dangers is that while seeking

growth, healing, and transformation,

4

:

you become falsely empowered.

5

:

Let's say you've experienced

pain, trauma, or rejection.

6

:

It cuts very deep.

7

:

And so you rise up to fight

back, to seek to change.

8

:

False empowerment can occur when your

ego, your false self, drives that change.

9

:

We are all addicted to control, to

believing the lie that it's only up to

10

:

me, that I am the only one I can depend

on, and so, instead of surrendering a

11

:

situation in our will to God, we take

control and become falsely empowered.

12

:

we weaponize boundaries.

13

:

We lash out and call it justice.

14

:

We take action to prioritize security

and safety instead of sacrificial love.

15

:

We sit around our own internal campfire

and tell ourselves victim based tales.

16

:

We whine to ourselves and others

with resentment and indignation about

17

:

how bad and shocking others are.

18

:

Beware.

19

:

False empowerment is

deadly and leads to ruin.

20

:

Jesus teaches that the resentment

log eliminates the possibility

21

:

for humble self awareness and

ultimately surrender and healthy

22

:

dependence on God in Matthew 7, 3 14.

23

:

This is a hard truth.

24

:

We all innately long to have

power over our own existence.

25

:

But every mature spiritual leader I

know of knows better: you are powerless

26

:

and desperately need to depend on God.

27

:

So take action, but do

it in dependence on God.

28

:

Surrender, quote, the flesh,

that small ego of self.

29

:

Let go and entrust your

will and your life to God.

30

:

Only then will your boundaries be healthy.

31

:

and your heart centered.

32

:

Only then can you enter the narrow gate,

ask what you want of God, and receive it.

33

:

Perhaps there is more freedom for you

to experience, not by setting more

34

:

boundaries, but by breaking down internal

barriers you've built to wall off love.

35

:

Quotes.

36

:

Judge not, that you be not judged.

37

:

For with the judgment you

pronounce, you will be judged.

38

:

And with the measure you use,

it will be measured to you.

39

:

Why do you seek the speck

that is in your brother's eye?

40

:

But do not notice the log

that is in your own eye.

41

:

Or how can you say to your brother,

Let me take the speck out of your eye.

42

:

When there is the log in your own eye.

43

:

You hypocrite.

44

:

First take the log out of your own eye.

45

:

And then you will see clearly to take

the speck out of your brother's eye.

46

:

This is Jesus in the greatest

sermon in history in Matthew 7, 1 5.

47

:

All mature spirituality, in

one sense or another, is about

48

:

letting go and unlearning.

49

:

By Richard Rohr, in his

book, Breathing Underwater,

50

:

Spirituality in the Tall Steps.

51

:

Questions.

52

:

In what areas of my life might I

be experiencing false empowerment?

53

:

Are there any specific boundaries in

my life that I need to re evaluate

54

:

from a spiritual perspective?

55

:

In what ways do I try to maintain

control instead of surrendering to God?

56

:

Is there a victim based tale or

internal narrative of resentment

57

:

that I need to let go of?

58

:

Use these questions to guide your

prayers and as journal prompts this week.

59

:

End note.

60

:

Perhaps the strongest thing

you can do is to become weak

61

:

and surrender control to God.

62

:

Live wisely, Josh.
