This is Part 2 of my conversation with David Ask. If you haven't heard it yet, start with Part 1: You'll Never Find Your Purpose Until You Know Who You Are.

Many men were never handed a sense of who they are, so they spend years reading the room instead of standing on anything solid. David Ask calls that living by a compass, always reading the magnetic field around you to guess which way is north, when what you actually need is a true north, a fixed point that doesn't move when the crowd does. Without it, he says, you carry a question mark inside you that never goes quiet, and you'll do almost anything to medicate that feeling. In this second half of his conversation with Mike Forrester, David gets into what it takes to trade the compass for a true north, and why grit and resilience only mean something once you know the person you're being gritty for.

Much of it lands on fatherhood, and David doesn't flinch from the hard version. Mike is honest that his own father never gave him this foundation, that figuring out who he was felt like climbing Everest, and he asks the question a lot of men carry, whether it's simply too late. David's straightforward answer is no. You can't give away what you don't have, so the work starts with building your own foundation, your values, your convictions, the describable essence of who you are, and he insists a man can change the trajectory of his life and his kids' in as little as ninety days. He also reframes what a father even is, borrowing a line that the first job of a dad is protector and the second is to be the first one to say "I'm sorry." Not perfection, but instead humility, showing up, and refusing to quit.

What keeps this from staying theoretical is where David lands. Identity on its own isn't enough, because a man is made for relationship, and the guarded, wounded places in him only start to melt when another man looks him in the eye and says I see you, and what I see is good. That's why he's let go of the applause he used to crave, since it's never enough anyway, and why he'd rather think better than bigger, chasing what's true over what looks impressive. If you've spent your life performing for approval you never quite got, or you're trying to become the kind of father nobody ever showed you how to be, David's message is steady and freeing. You didn't create yourself, and you don't have to keep proving yourself. You're already enough. The work now is to stop generating and start standing on that.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Tell the difference between grit and resilience, and why both fall apart when you don't know who you are
  • Recognize the compass life of reading the room, and what it means to live from a fixed true north instead
  • Understand the question mark a man carries when no one gave him a foundation, and how he ends up numbing it
  • Learn why it's never too late to build your own bedrock, and how fast that work can change your trajectory
  • See what actually makes a father, from being the first to say sorry to giving your kids a straight edge to grow against
  • Recognize why approval will never fill you, and what it means to think better instead of bigger
