Shownotes

""You have the freedom of choice. You have the freedom of deciding the direction of your focus, and you have the freedom, therefore, of deciding the direction of your life." -Jenny Leckey

In this episode of Diary of a Recovering People Pleaser , Jenny talks about the healing power of being truly present in the moment. Inspired by Eckhart Tolle's book The Power of Now, she explores how focusing on the now can reduce stress about future worries and combat incessant, habitual thoughts.

By observing and choosing thoughts deliberately, you can reshape your experience and find freedom. Dancing pygmy goats make an appearance as does meditation, as she recounts ways that she stays present in the moment to show you how shifting focus can instantly change your emotional state. This practice is crucial for healing people-pleasing tendencies and is a transformative saying she lives by.

Jenny:

Let's talk about what it means to be truly present in the moment.

2

:

Eckhart Tolle has his

book, The Power of Now.

3

:

The emphasis is on being here right now.

4

:

I just did a post online a little bit

ago, and it delved into the fact that

5

:

everything happens in this now moment.

6

:

If you're stressing about something

happening in the future, if

7

:

you're worrying about attending

an event, or maybe money, or

8

:

fearing something going wrong.

9

:

Even though it's about

something in the future, it's

10

:

still taking place in the now.

11

:

You're still thinking about it

here and now you're still feeling

12

:

the feelings here and now.

13

:

From that aspect, your power

really lies in being present here

14

:

and now paying attention to your

surroundings, observing your thoughts,

15

:

not identifying with your thoughts.

16

:

But observing them as they're happening

and not attaching to them, letting them

17

:

float in and out of your experience.

18

:

That is true presence.

19

:

That is taking the power from your

incessant habitual thoughts, and instead

20

:

giving it back to your true self.

21

:

You're able to look at your

thoughts and think, huh, that's

22

:

going on in my brain right now.

23

:

I'm going to let that just float on by.

24

:

The next step is to choose the

thought that you want to focus on.

25

:

Replacing that thought with something that

feels better, or is more productive, or is

26

:

just making you feel well in the moment.

27

:

Yes, I know we need to plan

for things in the future.

28

:

And yes, I know we learn about things

that we've gone through in our past.

29

:

But it's more about what

are you attaching to?

30

:

What is triggering emotions within you?

31

:

When we think a thought, it gives

us a chemical reaction in our brain,

32

:

which we identify as an emotion.

33

:

Then our emotion turns into a

way that we're feeling.

34

:

I'm feeling X, Y, Z today.

35

:

Then if that keeps sticking around,

as, Joe Dispenza talks about, it

36

:

starts to become our way of being.

37

:

It becomes our personality

and it becomes our demeanor.

38

:

Circling back to the present

moment, there's a lot of

39

:

power in that present moment.

40

:

The choices that you're making, the

things you are choosing to focus

41

:

on, create your life experience.

42

:

If you're choosing thoughts that stress

you out all the time, that means it

43

:

puts your body into a perpetual state

of stress, and then therefore it

44

:

becomes the way that you view the world.

45

:

It influences your future thoughts,

and that becomes your life experience.

46

:

So take that knowledge.

47

:

And look at it as your power.

48

:

That is where your individual

power lies in the here and now.

49

:

It doesn't matter what you thought about

10 minutes ago or even 30 seconds ago.

50

:

Right here, right now, as you are

listening to my voice, you have a

51

:

choice of selecting any thought you

would like and taking it from there.

52

:

For me, if I want to be happy,

I think about little pygmy goats

53

:

wearing sweaters and dancing.

54

:

You can probably hear it in my voice,

that puts an instant smile on my face.

55

:

So if I ever want to snap myself out

of something and redirect my brain,

56

:

I think of dancing pygmy goats.

57

:

My question for you is, what

is your dancing pygmy goat?

58

:

What is your go to thought?

59

:

It's always good to have some of those

in your back pocket because when you

60

:

realize, oh, oh crap, my now moment, I

am stuck in my head about something that

61

:

happened in the past . I gotta redirect

that and bring myself back to the now.

62

:

You can think of your happy thought.

63

:

- You have redirected your focus to the

here and now you are fully present all

64

:

of your five senses are engaged in this

moment You know when people say that oh,

65

:

I was in the flow that creative flow?

66

:

That's literally what I'm talking about.

67

:

You are so present that time feels like

it doesn't exist You know the saying

68

:

time flies when you're having fun?

69

:

What that really means is time flies

when I'm so engaged in the present

70

:

moment that is bringing me joy and

I constantly stay in that moment and

71

:

I'm not stuck in the future or past.

72

:

Then it feels like I

have no concept of time.

73

:

That's what that saying is

really getting at.

74

:

You can also meditate.

75

:

If we meditate on a regular basis, it's

basically a workout for our brains.

76

:

You practice pulling yourself into

the present moment, out of those

77

:

thoughts and into the moment.

78

:

The more you do that, the more

your brain understands that habit.

79

:

It literally rewires your brain, so then

maybe you're in the middle of a stressful

80

:

meeting and all of a sudden you snap back

into the present moment, into right now.

81

:

And you think, holy crap, I

just went down the rabbit hole

82

:

with that stressful thought.

83

:

It's easier for you to snap out of that.

84

:

You grab your happy thought or you grab

a new thought, a better feeling thought.

85

:

You pick a different topic to focus

on and it's so much easier for your

86

:

brain to switch gears like that.

87

:

It takes practice.

88

:

Doing it one time is great, but

that's not going to build those

89

:

new connections in your brain.

90

:

You have to get the reps in.

91

:

Just like anything that you're practicing,

the more you meditate or even just the

92

:

more that you focus on observing your

thoughts and picking a new one, that

93

:

will become a natural habit for you.

94

:

You'll see the effects in your

life because you are picking the

95

:

path of what you are focusing on.

96

:

All we have is now.

97

:

You began listening to me in

a completely different moment.

98

:

You are in a brand new moment right now.

99

:

A new moment right now.

100

:

A new moment right now.

101

:

So look at that as a chance

for you to have freedom.

102

:

You have the freedom of choice.

103

:

You have the freedom of deciding

the direction of your focus, and

104

:

you have the freedom, therefore, of

deciding the direction of your life.
