Shownotes

Is work-life balance actually possible — or are we chasing an unrealistic ideal?

We hear the phrase “work-life balance” constantly.

But what does it actually mean in real life?

In this episode, Mike and Chrysa have an honest conversation about the challenges of managing business, leadership, family responsibilities, delegation, stress, and shifting priorities during different seasons of life.

Chrysa shares her perspective as a business owner, mother, and creative professional navigating the demands of entrepreneurship while raising a toddler and building sustainable systems behind the scenes.

Together, they explore why high achievers often overestimate what they can handle, why flexibility matters more than perfection, and how systems, communication, and delegation can reduce overwhelm without sacrificing quality.

This episode is a grounded conversation about creating work-life harmony in a way that feels realistic — not performative.

Quote

Michael: [:

Nancy: Okay. That's what you called it on the topic list. Yeah. So work-life balance is another word, you know, we throw around. Do you think it's even possible to have work-life balance? Yeah, that's a great question. So, um, I think it can, but it's not like, uh, most people think about. Like, there is no, um, great point that you can be in l- between, like, your life and your work- Mm-hmm

you do. Yeah. So I think the [:

Michael: So I think for me, this is, uh, what work-life balance means, uh, actually. It's like those moments when we feel in balance and, um, grateful for what we have in life. We, we enjoy life, you know, whatever enjoyment feels to you. Uh, . Wow. So okay, you've got the mother role- Yeah ... wife, daughter, and I'm just gonna say family member- Yeah

t? Uh, yeah. As we all do, I [:

With, with, you know, with a peace in mind and, um, you know, a calm approach and, you know, in life and at work. So, um, I'm trying to- find, um, a little, you know, an hour or so every day to work on my business because it's not realistic to- with a toddler. I'm, I'm a toddler mom, so- Oh ... my son is two, and, you know, this time is really challenging and demanding.

Mm-hmm. He wants a lot of time with me, and not only with me, but, you know, as a family. So- Yeah ... uh, my time, uh, in the business is limited, but I have like, I have a, an editor who, who's been helping me with the production. I have also an assistant who from now and then she's been helping me with the other, you know, admin tasks.

y day on my business because [:

So, but I'm trying to find the right balance between uh, my life, which is demanding with a toddler, and my business so I can keep it running and have my clients, , um, first of all, have, have them, um, content with our working relationship. Yes. So yeah. Yeah. Well- I think it's- ... this one's content over here, just- Yeah, yeah, yeah

Michael: just for the record, on video. Yeah, that's good. That's the most important part to me- Yeah ... actually, in my business. Yeah, because it doesn't, I don't believe that you, you need to have like a gazillion clients or, um, certainly when you, when you go to the agency route, you know, and you expand your business, you will have multiple clients and multiple projects.

But because I'm a [:

Nancy: So yeah. Okay, this is gold. . And I hope people listening will hear so many things you just said. Quality. Yep. You know, so you're limited with time. Yep. You know, you got a, you've got a time period with your, your son here. He's, you know, he needs your attention, right? Limited amount of time. What do you do in that time?

Well, you do your best and you try to put out the best quality that you can. You also brought up the D word, delegate. Delegate. We were talking about this, I think, during our last meeting a little bit. How is that going for you, the delegating thing? Yeah, the delegating thing is, um, actually so- something that I'm, like, managing people and projects because I've been working as a kind of...

Michael: I don't know if I [:

Nancy: projects. Mm, mm, mm. Yeah, things like that. I love planning. Oh, I, I, I know. Well, you know, I mean, truth be told, with how busy I am- Yes ... this, this would have not happened, we would not be here- Yeah ... if I did not have you working with me. I know. Like, there's no way. And one of the lessons I'm learning with you, and I think, you know, w- we do great together, and I still think we're figuring out each other too, but one of the things that I'm, I'm trying to do is, like, you know, as we're recording this right now, I said, "You know, you choose."

e... And I know at the end I [:

Michael: Yeah. But to a certain extent, when you delegate, you just gotta just say, "Okay, you're doing it." Yeah. And, and trust that it's gonna come back good, you know? Yeah. But to add to that, I agree with everything that you said, but here's a distinction- Mm ... like, a, um, in terms of, for me, to a successful delegation, although we don't actually, you know, we don't speak about delegation specifically, but a- as the conversation, uh, came here, um, to me, a successful delegation, um, process looks like delegating the task, but not, like, leaving it without, um, getting back to the person who is executing the task and asking, you know, "Do you need anything else?

ou start your work?" Because [:

So- I think the key here is clear communication between, like, the people who, um, who you have, like, in your team or you as a, as a person who, uh, have been working with your client, you know- Mm-hmm ... from both sides. Clear communication , uh, about the project, uh, the project plan is key to have, um, great relationship when you delegate task to people.

hat spot where recently even [:

Nancy: You didn't read- Yeah ... what was on my mind. Come on." Right? Yeah. So no, I, I, I appreciate that very much. Well, let, let me ask you this. What habits or strategies have you tried that didn't work for you? Didn't work for me- ... in terms of, like, um- Work-life balance. Yeah, work-life balance. Yeah. Managing time, delegating, all that stuff.

ith the launch date for this [:

Nancy: But I think at the same time, the gift of that- Yeah ... there's a gift there. Again, we're here doing this. Had we not even talked about pushing the launch date up, I don't think we'd have the same conversation here, you know? Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, yeah. And going back to your question, I think that sometimes my life, when things were, like, too hectic or I've, I've overestimated my, uh, the things that I can do-

Michael: at a certain period of time- Mm ... probably. . Uh, uh, reality told me that, you know, you cannot do that many stuff. So everything just went out, out of control and, like, I had to then really figure out what to prioritize and where to catch up with everything that was going on.

Nancy: [:

Michael: and narrow the, the goal, the focus. Because in times of crisis or in stressful times when you have a move, when the baby's born, when, you know, things like that, uh, the, the time gets limited that much you cannot even ima- imagine. So, uh, the focus needs to shift. You know, you need to shift your focus. So, um, this is what, uh, didn't work for me.

or example, after the, after [:

So yeah, I just, then I, I needed to take some time, re- you know, uh, rethink my priorities and plan ahead with the new priorities and new tasks that, uh, were upon, upon me. Yeah. One word that you said that struck an emotional chord with me: overestimating. Yeah. Overestimating, yeah. That's, that's the source of my problems right there.

Yeah. And I think for a lot of people listening, high achievers are listening to this podcast. Yes. We are high achievers. We, we love to overestimate. We love. Oh my God, we can conquer the world, right? You know, and, and, and it's actually one of the reasons why I said today we're gonna record just two episodes, which could be, what, like total of 40 minutes of content.

Yeah. But we had all this [:

Exactly. And when you do, you have to change the mindset and focus on one or two things. On, in the moment. When the times are stressed, like, uh, or the, there is a very l- great chance in your life, you just need to be, to- Drop the planning for me, and just focus on in the moment, getting through the day, and that's it.

ement, leadership, work/life [:

So, um, let me think. I think that, um, I'm trying to create a, you know, a different, more holistic kind of approach in terms of my, um, backend systems to increase efficiency w- in my communications, my, the content that I put out, because I've been pushing it. Um, I've been like, putting on the back burner my content.

ll, so I landed this morning [:

Mm-hmm. You know, you... I, I got your message that, you know, you, you were in some traffic- ... which I quickly got into that traffic. Yeah. So I was like, "Oh, may- maybe I should have something to eat." So there were different spots to eat in the airport, you know, but I'm like, "McDonald's." Why McDonald's? Well, I kinda know roughly what I'm gonna get, roughly how much I'm gonna pay.

Yeah. It's not the greatest food in the world, and McDonald's is an example of systems, actually. Yeah. It's not the greatest food in the world. Yeah. I'm not knocking it, but I'm just saying it's not like, you know, "Oh, my God. Let's go to McDonald's." I mean, the- Yeah ... I mean, this, well, sometimes if you're emotional, you might need McDonald's.

But the thing is, you know, it's got a system. Yeah. And you, you, you and I, I think one of the reasons we work well together too is because I'm the same way, and I think everything just needs to be rinse and repeat, right? Just rinse and repeat. Yeah. Like, we just get it going, like a, a workflow, and I love that.

do you have systems as well? [:

They are expecting, they're... Did I mess this up? I don't know. They expect me to have systems, which I kinda have, but I'm not... I need more, more like I'm refining my systems, and also trying to find a, you know, again, an approach and a system that works right now. Because what I've been doing like two years ago with now, it's completely difference, different.

enjoy the moment and not be, [:

because I do want to enjoy times with my, with my son, with my husband, and like have the, those spontaneous moment where we go maybe to a playground, whatever, like a park. But I do need systems, and I, I'm trying to incorporate them in terms of managing the, you know, the chores, uh, uh, household, whatever, because this is also a lot with being a stay-at-home mom and also a business owner.

So systems are key. I'm, hey, I'm getting there. You know, I'm working on it. It's a working pro- progress. I don't think, um, it, even like even now or in one year or two years or whatever, I don't think there is a point, a specific point that you have... Even if you have systems in your life, life always finds, finds it, its way to surprise you-

have all the systems in the [:

Yeah. Thank you for, thank you for having me, and thank you for h- you know, grabbing coffee with me. I love, I loved our conversation. Yes, Coffee With Mike. Let's do it again sometime. Mm-hmm.
