Most couples don't drift apart because of a crisis. They drift because life gets busy, and the relationship quietly moves from something you build together into something you just manage. Habits that aren't serving you settle in unnoticed, and before long, another year has passed that looked a lot like the one before.

In this episode, Alastair shares the story of Jamie and Carol, together eleven years, who realised they hadn't really talked about "us" in a long time, even though nothing was wrong. He gave them three questions to sit with: what did we like, what would we like to do differently, and how do we want to grow together?

Two hours later, they'd had one of the most meaningful conversations of their relationship. This week's challenge: find an hour with your partner and ask these same three questions.

Daily Relationship Tips helps couples strengthen relationship communication, rebuild emotional intimacy, restore relationship trust, develop healthy relationship habits, and reconnect before emotional distance becomes permanent.

Hosted by Alastair Duhs, relationship coach and creator of Reconnected.

Speaker A:

We haven't really talked about us, not properly, in a long time.

Speaker A:

That's what Carol said to me during our first session.

Speaker A:

Her partner, Jamie, nodded.

Speaker A:

They'd been together 11 years, not in crisis.

Speaker A:

Both would have described the relationship as solid, even good.

Speaker A:

But there was something quieter underneath, a sense that the past year had been more about managing life than building it together, more routine than connection.

Speaker A:

That's what Jamie and Carol were sitting with when I asked them when they'd last talked about what they actually wanted their relationship to look like.

Speaker A:

Hi, I'm Alistair Dewes, and welcome to the Daily Relationship Tips Podcast, where I share simple, practical tools to help you and your partner feel close, connected, and in love again, one small habit at a time.

Speaker A:

Now, here's what many people don't realize.

Speaker A:

Every day you are with your partner offers something genuinely valuable.

Speaker A:

Not just to have another day, but to have a renewal.

Speaker A:

A chance to look back with honesty and look forward with intention.

Speaker A:

That's what today's episode is about.

Speaker A:

It's not about fixing anything broken, but just deliberately reflecting on where you've been and deliberately choosing where you're going together.

Speaker A:

Now, most couples never do this.

Speaker A:

Life keeps moving, and the relationship moves with it, but passively, without anyone really steering.

Speaker A:

And good things can drift away quietly.

Speaker A:

Habits that aren't serving you can quietly solidify.

Speaker A:

And before long, another week, another month, or even year has passed that looked a lot like the year before.

Speaker A:

Jamie and Caro hadn't been careless with their relationship.

Speaker A:

They'd been busy.

Speaker A:

And busy is the most common reason couples stop tending to the thing that matters most.

Speaker A:

So I gave them three questions to sit with, just three.

Speaker A:

But they turned into one of the most meaningful conversations they'd had in years.

Speaker A:

The first question what do we like about our relationship?

Speaker A:

Not what works well in life generally, but what works between us?

Speaker A:

What moments, what habits, what ways of being together do we most appreciate?

Speaker A:

The second question what would we like to do differently?

Speaker A:

For example, where do we lose each other a little?

Speaker A:

What do we wish we'd say more of, make more time for or handle better?

Speaker A:

And the third question how do we want to grow together moving forward?

Speaker A:

Not individual goals, but shared ones.

Speaker A:

In other words, what kind of relationship do we want to be building?

Speaker A:

Jamie and Caro spent two hours on these questions, something they hadn't done in years.

Speaker A:

The first question alone surfaced things they hadn't said to each other directly in a long time.

Speaker A:

I loved how we laugh together, and I love that we took that trip in April.

Speaker A:

I want to do more of that.

Speaker A:

The second question was harder, but it opened real conversations, real rather than recriminations.

Speaker A:

And the third gave them something to build toward together not a list of resolutions, but a shared sense of direction.

Speaker A:

So here's your challenge for today.

Speaker A:

Find an hour with your partner.

Speaker A:

Sit down with these three what do we like?

Speaker A:

What would we want to do differently?

Speaker A:

And how do we want to grow together?

Speaker A:

Write the answers down if you can.

Speaker A:

Make it real.

Speaker A:

Because couples who take time to reflect, who deliberately look back before moving forward, build a shared narrative about their relationship.

Speaker A:

They know what they're grateful for, they know what they want to change, and they feel like they're building something together, not just letting life happen to them.

Speaker A:

That sense of shared direction is one of the quietest, most powerful forces in a lasting relationship.

Speaker A:

So start your new beginning today.

Speaker A:

Three questions, one honest conversation and a sense of where you're going together.

Speaker A:

Now.

Speaker A:

If you've been listening for a while and you're ready to go a bit deeper, I've built a full course that walks you through all of this, step by step.

Speaker A:

It's everything I share here in order with the structure to actually make it stick.

Speaker A:

You'll find [email protected] if you're at the point where you want real, lasting change rather than one tip at a time.

Speaker A:

That's where I'd start.

Speaker A:

Thanks for listening and I'll see you in the next episode.
