Transcripts

Josh Klemons:

For me it's much more about, continuing to

Josh Klemons:

have conversations with people that I admire and respect

Josh Klemons:

and that I wanna get to know.

Josh Klemons:

Some folks are an easy Yes.

Josh Klemons:

And some folks, I chase them and , they either

Josh Klemons:

ignore me or say no and.

Josh Klemons:

That's fine.

Josh Klemons:

It is what it is.

Josh Klemons:

If you're never getting a no, then you're not

Josh Klemons:

trying hard enough.

Sadaf Beynon:

And how can podcasting become a powerful

Sadaf Beynon:

tool for growing your brand, engaging your audience, and

Sadaf Beynon:

amplifying your message?

Sadaf Beynon:

create real impact online.

So meet Josh Klemons, a digital storyteller and

Sadaf Beynon:

strategist and founder of revver com communications.

Sadaf Beynon:

He helps brands and campaigns tell their stories online.

Sadaf Beynon:

Josh also hosts two podcasts.

Sadaf Beynon:

Hello Merge Tag where social media and politics intersect.

Sadaf Beynon:

And Step Up Your Social, a podcast about digital marketing

Sadaf Beynon:

and social media strategy.

Sadaf Beynon:

Josh, welcome to the show.

Sadaf Beynon:

Thanks

Josh Klemons:

so much for having me.

Josh Klemons:

Excited to talk podcasts with you.

Sadaf Beynon:

Awesome.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's been a while.

Sadaf Beynon:

I know we've been planning this for a bit.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah, you caught me during my busy season.

Josh Klemons:

'cause I work, uh, a lot of my work is in politics and, um,

Josh Klemons:

so we, hence hello merge tag.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and I think y'all first reached out and I was like in

Josh Klemons:

the thick of it and then yeah.

Josh Klemons:

As soon as things quieted down, we got to schedule something.

Josh Klemons:

So Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Excited to be here.

Sadaf Beynon:

So Josh, you have built a career around helping

Sadaf Beynon:

people engage, influence, and grow through digital content.

Sadaf Beynon:

I'm really curious to know how your podcasts Hello Merge tag

Sadaf Beynon:

and Step Up social fit into the overall business strategy at

Sadaf Beynon:

Rev at Rever Communications.

Sadaf Beynon:

So wondering if you could share the story behind your podcast.

Sadaf Beynon:

And how, um, and the role they play in your work.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah, absolutely.

Josh Klemons:

So I'm a huge podcast nerd.

Josh Klemons:

I love podcasts.

Josh Klemons:

I've been listening to 'em for years and a while back

Josh Klemons:

I decided, um, that I, I saw a purpose for me to start

Josh Klemons:

my fir me my first podcast.

Josh Klemons:

Step Up Your Social, step Up Your Social.

Josh Klemons:

All the episodes are short, 10 minutes or less.

Josh Klemons:

They provide quick, actionable tips to take your digital

Josh Klemons:

marketing to the next level.

Josh Klemons:

I intend, although in the world of digital marketing intention

Josh Klemons:

is, is irrelevant, I intend to make them all evergreen.

Josh Klemons:

Um, but that's just not always possible.

Josh Klemons:

So there are some that are not as relevant today, but

Josh Klemons:

my goal there was to create less about like an ongoing

Josh Klemons:

community than to create like a backlog of content that people

Josh Klemons:

like that answer questions.

Josh Klemons:

So I do a ton of public speaking.

Josh Klemons:

I work with a ton of clients as a consultant.

Josh Klemons:

And I found that I was regularly teaching people the same thing

Josh Klemons:

over and over, which is great.

Josh Klemons:

I mean, that's part of what I do.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and so I just found that like there was an easy way

Josh Klemons:

for me to like put those into, you know, writing slash

Josh Klemons:

podcast format so that folks can like learn with me and

Josh Klemons:

then go and like, dig deeper.

Josh Klemons:

So I, it's a really nice back like.

Josh Klemons:

When I go do a public speaking gig, I will regularly

Josh Klemons:

be able to say, I have a whole episode on this, if

Josh Klemons:

you'd like to learn more.

Josh Klemons:

You know, so it's like, I only have an hour with you and

Josh Klemons:

we're spending five minutes on this topic, but I went

Josh Klemons:

deeper in this episode and so I, I, I'm regularly able

Josh Klemons:

to refer back to Step Up Your Social, and that was really

Josh Klemons:

my intention for creating it.

Josh Klemons:

I don't create those on any kind of schedule.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I, I sometimes I'll do a bunch in a, you know, a couple

Josh Klemons:

months and then I kind of won't do any for a while, just

Josh Klemons:

depending on how busy I am.

Josh Klemons:

But they're a really nice way for me to sort of dig in.

Josh Klemons:

And some of them are kind of like fun, like I did one

Josh Klemons:

about seven times the airlines blew it, and what we can

Josh Klemons:

learn from their mistakes.

Josh Klemons:

And then some of them are much more practical,

Josh Klemons:

like understanding the three different types of

Josh Klemons:

audiences available to you in Facebook advertising.

Josh Klemons:

So, you know, different kind of ways to think about it.

Josh Klemons:

And again, I, I really created that as a way to just like

Josh Klemons:

help the people I was already working with, learn more and

Josh Klemons:

obviously reach new audiences.

Josh Klemons:

But I was much more focused on the folks I was already working

Josh Klemons:

with to like be able to dig in.

Josh Klemons:

The second podcast was specific to politics and social media.

Josh Klemons:

So I work in politics.

Josh Klemons:

I mentioned about two thirds of my work is in the

Josh Klemons:

progressive political space.

Josh Klemons:

I work with candidates, campaigns, brands, all

Josh Klemons:

kinds of orgs to um.

Josh Klemons:

To move the needle online.

Josh Klemons:

And there are podcasts focused on politics, a lot of them.

Josh Klemons:

And there are podcasts focused on social media, a lot of them.

Josh Klemons:

But there, there weren't a lot.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, it's, I don't know that there were none, but there

Josh Klemons:

certainly weren't many that were really focused on the

Josh Klemons:

intersection of those two.

Josh Klemons:

And so my, that podcast, um, is.

Josh Klemons:

Almost always, not exclusive, but almost always conversations

Josh Klemons:

with people in the field.

Josh Klemons:

So I've sat down with Congress people and state senators

Josh Klemons:

and state assembly people, but also like Dan Pfeiffer

Josh Klemons:

from Pod Save America and, um, influencers online.

Josh Klemons:

I just recently sat down with a guy who gets 3 billion views

Josh Klemons:

a year across his channels.

Josh Klemons:

Wow.

Josh Klemons:

To talk about what, how he approaches the internet,

Josh Klemons:

um, and really just trying to help folks like.

Josh Klemons:

Think differently about that intersection of social

Josh Klemons:

and politics and yeah.

Josh Klemons:

So that, that project came about maybe a year and a half

Josh Klemons:

ago, and I've been having a, it's a ton of work, which I'm

Josh Klemons:

sure you know all about and I'm sure your listeners do as well,

Josh Klemons:

but I've been having a ton of fun with that, getting to meet

Josh Klemons:

really cool people, have really interesting conversations and,

Josh Klemons:

uh, yeah, it's, it's been a really gratifying, um, process.

Josh Klemons:

A lot of work, but a lot of fun.

Josh Klemons:

So.

Sadaf Beynon:

Awesome.

Sadaf Beynon:

Um, I wanna ask you first about you, what you were saying about

Sadaf Beynon:

Step Up social, about your 10 minute topical types of mm-hmm.

Sadaf Beynon:

Um, episodes.

Sadaf Beynon:

How do you choose those?

Sadaf Beynon:

How do you choose the topics?

Josh Klemons:

Yeah, so every episode is 10 minutes or less.

Josh Klemons:

That sort of my guarantee.

Josh Klemons:

'cause a lot of folks, I actually wanted to call it

Josh Klemons:

Flash social, but that name just like wasn't available readily.

Josh Klemons:

Um, but that was the idea was like, I listen to a lot

Josh Klemons:

of podcasts and a lot of them are long, but sometimes

Josh Klemons:

it's nice to just have like.

Josh Klemons:

A quick thing you can like listen to on a walk or you know,

Josh Klemons:

when you're on a quick drive.

Josh Klemons:

And so that was the intention.

Josh Klemons:

And the majority of those episodes, not all, but

Josh Klemons:

the majority came directly from things that I was

Josh Klemons:

already talking about with clients or public speaking.

Josh Klemons:

So I was regularly talking about like the difference

Josh Klemons:

between Facebook, I. Audiences for advertising, you know,

Josh Klemons:

customs, lookalike, and save.

Josh Klemons:

I've explained the difference between those three things

Josh Klemons:

maybe a million times in my life and I'm happy to do it.

Josh Klemons:

I could do it right now, no question.

Josh Klemons:

But I want you to go deeper in a way that like I don't have

Josh Klemons:

time necessarily in like a presentation where I'm covering

Josh Klemons:

all of Facebook advertising.

Josh Klemons:

So using it as a way where folks can like go back and

Josh Klemons:

like, listen, like, oh, and again, my intention for

Josh Klemons:

those is to be evergreen.

Josh Klemons:

Like I want those to all be relevant forever.

Josh Klemons:

But then Twitter goes and like removes its analytic tools

Josh Klemons:

unless you're paying Facebook kills off pages to watch.

Josh Klemons:

So it's like, it is what it is.

Josh Klemons:

Mm-hmm.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, they're not always going to be evergreen just because

Josh Klemons:

the world of digital marketing changes so readily, but

Josh Klemons:

that is my intention with those episodes is to make

Josh Klemons:

sure that like you could go dig through all of those

Josh Klemons:

episodes today and enjoy them.

Josh Klemons:

Um, yeah, I just did one about like, what's blue sky and

Josh Klemons:

should your brand be on it?

Josh Klemons:

You know, it's like mm-hmm.

Josh Klemons:

So there's not one answer.

Josh Klemons:

It's usually like I have.

Josh Klemons:

A lot of times it's like, I'm, I'm an avid blogger and

Josh Klemons:

I think regularly, like I have a blog idea, and if I

Josh Klemons:

think it'll make more sense in an audio format, it might

Josh Klemons:

become an episode of Step Up.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I don't know if this is something you wanna talk

Josh Klemons:

about, but I have a very specific, um, strategy I use

Josh Klemons:

for SEO purposes with Okay.

Josh Klemons:

Every, I'll just spell it out simply and then we can

Josh Klemons:

talk about it if you want.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Every one of my, um, podcast episodes becomes

Josh Klemons:

a standalone blog post.

Josh Klemons:

Everyone across both podcasts, but then I also have standalone

Josh Klemons:

landing pages for both, um

Sadaf Beynon:

Oh wow.

Sadaf Beynon:

Blog

Josh Klemons:

posts and they all link to each other.

Josh Klemons:

So if you go to my website, you can see under content

Josh Klemons:

that I have two podcasts and a whole separate standalone

Josh Klemons:

newsletter separate from my, like traditional, you

Josh Klemons:

know, my personal newsletter.

Josh Klemons:

Um, that's focused only on free digital tools.

Josh Klemons:

Everything is standalone.

Josh Klemons:

Like you have to want to opt into each of those things.

Josh Klemons:

But I use them as a way like.

Josh Klemons:

I blog regularly and a huge part of my blogging strategy

Josh Klemons:

essentially over the years has become, every time I release a

Josh Klemons:

new podcast episode, I drop a blog and we step up your social.

Josh Klemons:

I have full transcripts, which has been invaluable

Josh Klemons:

for, um, SEO, like it's helped by SEO tremendously

Josh Klemons:

with Hello Merge tag.

Josh Klemons:

I'm not doing full transcripts, but I'm having back links and

Josh Klemons:

folks are sharing it, so you know, like both of them are good

Josh Klemons:

for seo, which I assume a lot of your audience cares about, and

Josh Klemons:

happy to talk more about that.

Sadaf Beynon:

So, yeah, carry on.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's,

Josh Klemons:

uh, yeah.

Josh Klemons:

So essentially every time I create an episode, I create

Josh Klemons:

a standalone blog post, but then that links to like,

Josh Klemons:

listen to all episodes at step up your social.com

Josh Klemons:

or hello merge tag.com.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and then if you go to either of those, you can find

Josh Klemons:

a full list of every episode.

Josh Klemons:

So again, the whole thing's like a big circle.

Josh Klemons:

It takes you from one to the other and back.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and I'm a big advocate that the easier it is

Josh Klemons:

for people to navigate your website, the better.

Josh Klemons:

Mm-hmm.

Josh Klemons:

And I spend a lot of time thinking about that.

Josh Klemons:

Um, obviously you can also listen to both podcasts.

Josh Klemons:

Any place you stream.

Josh Klemons:

But if you're looking for, you know, every episode, um, I

Josh Klemons:

have 'em laid out, very easy to find at Step Up Your social.com

Josh Klemons:

and hello merch tag.com.

Sadaf Beynon:

Is that something that evolved or did you do

Sadaf Beynon:

that right from the get go?

Josh Klemons:

Right from the get go?

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Is that right?

Josh Klemons:

I was, I've been blogging for 10 years and podcasting

Josh Klemons:

for maybe three or four.

Josh Klemons:

Okay.

Josh Klemons:

Um, it was just very natural when I was trying to think

Josh Klemons:

about how to organize this all and make it easy

Josh Klemons:

for like the listener.

Josh Klemons:

I didn't want them to have to like search.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and if you just have a landing page, which I think

Josh Klemons:

a lot of folks do mm-hmm.

Josh Klemons:

Especially if it's just like one piece of their larger strategy.

Josh Klemons:

You don't get any of the key words in there.

Josh Klemons:

Like, it's very hard to like, think about,

Josh Klemons:

like, to think about more than just listing them.

Josh Klemons:

So it's a ton of extra work.

Josh Klemons:

Like I, yeah, like for me, creating even the 10 minute

Josh Klemons:

episodes is a ton of work because I have to create the,

Josh Klemons:

I create transcripts for those.

Josh Klemons:

'cause I find just talking, I, I'm very comfortable just

Josh Klemons:

talking, but when it's just me on, on the audio, like

Josh Klemons:

I want it to be perfect.

Josh Klemons:

So I, I typically write those out.

Josh Klemons:

Record them, then create the blog post.

Josh Klemons:

It's like a whole process with Hello Merge tag.

Josh Klemons:

Also, I summarize them.

Josh Klemons:

I try to like do takeaways what we covered.

Josh Klemons:

So, but I just found that it was a much easier way

Josh Klemons:

for me to think about how to give like the summation.

Josh Klemons:

And I really like having the transcripts when possible,

Josh Klemons:

um, for a DA compliance, but also for SEO purposes.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

But with hello Merge tag, I'm, I'm not doing that.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I'm giving some takeaways and letting

Josh Klemons:

folks dive in if they want.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, it's, I mean, I, you're re

Sadaf Beynon:

you're repurposing the content as well, isn't it?

Sadaf Beynon:

Which is, which is exactly great.

Sadaf Beynon:

So

Josh Klemons:

like the one podcast episode also becomes a

Josh Klemons:

blog post, also becomes social content, uh, and whatnot.

Sadaf Beynon:

Have you had any, any customers come

Sadaf Beynon:

to you through your, um, podcast or your blogs?

Sadaf Beynon:

I think that,

Josh Klemons:

so I do a lot of blogging.

Josh Klemons:

I create a lot of videos like I, I TikTok daily,

Josh Klemons:

um, and then, um, create tons of social content.

Josh Klemons:

I don't know that I've ever gotten a new client from

Josh Klemons:

Step Up Your Social, but I know that I've had clients

Josh Klemons:

come back to me and like.

Josh Klemons:

I think I have built my entire business on the back of content.

Josh Klemons:

I'm a huge content marketer.

Josh Klemons:

Right, okay.

Josh Klemons:

I was content marketing before I knew that phrase, like I got

Josh Klemons:

into the business and I started blogging and then I started

Josh Klemons:

doing social and then, you know, it's just like anything I could

Josh Klemons:

do to add value to the world, I'm like a huge advocate that

Josh Klemons:

like businesses that add value.

Josh Klemons:

Succeed.

Josh Klemons:

And I was just doing that before I even had business.

Josh Klemons:

Like I didn't have, I mean, this is 10 years ago.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

But I didn't have any clients, but I was just

Josh Klemons:

putting content into the world and like absolutely.

Josh Klemons:

Without question.

Josh Klemons:

Content has brought me a ton of my clients, but like, I'm not

Josh Klemons:

creating it for the clients, but it, it helps, you know?

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Like it, it sort of works together.

Josh Klemons:

Um.

Josh Klemons:

So I don't know that I've ever had somebody be like, I just

Josh Klemons:

listen to step up your social and now I wanna hire you.

Josh Klemons:

Mm-hmm.

Josh Klemons:

But I've definitely been able to keep the relationships going.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

So like, I'll go to a public speaking gig and I'll tell

Josh Klemons:

people to go check it out, and I could see a big jump.

Josh Klemons:

Like somebody went and listened to four or five

Josh Klemons:

episodes and then they joined my mailing list.

Josh Klemons:

And then, so you never know.

Josh Klemons:

Like it, you know, I, I do track like how I find clients.

Josh Klemons:

But sometimes you don't really know, you know?

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Somebody writes you, 'cause they're like, I found you on

Josh Klemons:

Google, but like, not really.

Josh Klemons:

They found me on Google because they had like come to

Josh Klemons:

my website five times in the last three months and then

Josh Klemons:

they Googled, you know, social media expert or whatever and

Josh Klemons:

Google was like, you, I have good SEO, but also like Google

Josh Klemons:

remembers that you've checked out my website and like, yeah,

Josh Klemons:

spent 20 minutes listening to two podcast episodes.

Josh Klemons:

So I think that there's like, it's hard sometimes to quantify

Josh Klemons:

the benefits of putting content in the world, but I can say

Josh Klemons:

definitively, I built my entire business on the back of it.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's great.

Sadaf Beynon:

So Josh, how would you say your podcasts compare to

Sadaf Beynon:

your other content formats?

Sadaf Beynon:

So your social media, your blogs, your videos.

Josh Klemons:

So I am a big fan, uh, big advocate.

Josh Klemons:

That content should fit the platform.

Josh Klemons:

Mm-hmm.

Josh Klemons:

So I have, I am active on at least half a

Josh Klemons:

dozen social platforms.

Josh Klemons:

I have this newsletter called Free Digital Tools.

Josh Klemons:

I have two podcasts.

Josh Klemons:

I blog, I do a ton of stuff, but like, not

Josh Klemons:

everything fits everywhere.

Josh Klemons:

And you know, it's, if you're trying to cram it

Josh Klemons:

in, it's not gonna work and people are gonna feel that.

Josh Klemons:

So like on TikTok, I am regularly posting political

Josh Klemons:

content and like that stuff doesn't make it anywhere on

Josh Klemons:

my website for the most part.

Josh Klemons:

I mean bits and pieces, but very little.

Josh Klemons:

And then, you know, again, I like sometimes I'll have

Josh Klemons:

a blog post and realize, you know what, this could be a

Josh Klemons:

good podcast episode and I'll recreate it as a podcast.

Josh Klemons:

But more often than not, it's like one or the other.

Josh Klemons:

And then I've course I repurpose.

Josh Klemons:

So like I mentioned, every podcast episode becomes a blog,

Josh Klemons:

but not every blog becomes a podcast episode for sure.

Sadaf Beynon:

Have you seen your podcasts open doors to

Sadaf Beynon:

collaborating or collaborations that you didn't expect?

Josh Klemons:

Hello?

Josh Klemons:

Merch Tag has helped me connect with a whole bunch of people

Josh Klemons:

that I would, who I knew, but they didn't know me or,

Josh Klemons:

you know, like, um, I. Hello.

Josh Klemons:

Metech has absolutely made it easier for me to connect with

Josh Klemons:

people in my space that I'm excited to be connected with.

Josh Klemons:

Let's put it that way.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, I've gotten to meet some really cool people through it.

Josh Klemons:

I've gotten to deeper my relationships with

Josh Klemons:

people I already knew.

Josh Klemons:

Um, you know, like for example, just recently,

Josh Klemons:

there's a guy whose content I read all the time and he

Josh Klemons:

wrote a really interesting piece and I reached out and

Josh Klemons:

invited him on the podcast to continue the conversation.

Josh Klemons:

He said yes, and so I got to like, I, I got to read a thing

Josh Klemons:

on the internet that I liked and then host the guy who wrote it

Josh Klemons:

to continue the conversation.

Josh Klemons:

That's a pretty special thing to do, and like.

Josh Klemons:

You know, I'm not unique in that sense, but podcasts are

Josh Klemons:

pretty unique in that sense.

Josh Klemons:

Um, you know, it's, you know, Hey, will you write

Josh Klemons:

a guest blog post for me?

Josh Klemons:

Is not gonna get the same kind of response as, Hey,

Josh Klemons:

will you come on my podcast?

Josh Klemons:

So, you know, it's a really cool way that I got to open a door

Josh Klemons:

to like connect with somebody and, you know, it's good for

Josh Klemons:

him 'cause he got an opportunity to like think through

Josh Klemons:

what he was writing about.

Josh Klemons:

But it's good for me 'cause I get to like, be part of

Josh Klemons:

that conversation and I learn from 'em and, you

Josh Klemons:

know, um, get to share that, uh, with my audience.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's awesome, Josh.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's clear that your podcasts play a big role in your

Sadaf Beynon:

broader strategy for verbal communications, but as with

Sadaf Beynon:

anything worth its time, it comes with its own set

Sadaf Beynon:

of challenges and hurdles.

Sadaf Beynon:

So I'm interested to know what that was like for you when you

Sadaf Beynon:

were launching your podcast, especially the step up one.

Sadaf Beynon:

'cause that was your first one, wasn't it?

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

So step Up your social, um.

Josh Klemons:

You know, the episodes are short.

Josh Klemons:

I'm recording it on stuff I already have, you

Josh Klemons:

know, I was recording it right into GarageBand.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, I bought a good mic, but other than that, you

Josh Klemons:

know, like there wasn't a huge financial investment.

Josh Klemons:

But there was a lot of learning.

Josh Klemons:

How do I host this thing?

Josh Klemons:

How do I get it online?

Josh Klemons:

But a huge part of my job, um, as a digital marketing

Josh Klemons:

consultant is staying ahead of the curve so that

Josh Klemons:

I could teach my clients.

Josh Klemons:

So I went out and I learned how to create a podcast,

Josh Klemons:

in part because I wanted a podcast, and in part because

Josh Klemons:

I wanted to be able to help clients create podcasts.

Josh Klemons:

And since that time, I've helped several clients create podcasts,

Josh Klemons:

you know, like, so it made me more valuable to my clients

Josh Klemons:

because now I knew exactly.

Josh Klemons:

I knew how to help somebody go out and do what I had done.

Josh Klemons:

Um, whereas, you know, without my expertise, these

Josh Klemons:

clients would've been, you know, stuck in Google.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, I will say, um, I started in Google.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, I found some really valuable Facebook communities that I was

Josh Klemons:

able to learn from folks there.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and then again, I listened to a lot of podcasts, but you

Josh Klemons:

know, there's some things like, how do you host a podcast?

Josh Klemons:

How do you actually get it on Apple?

Josh Klemons:

You're not gonna learn that from listening to podcasts unless

Josh Klemons:

it's a podcast about podcasting.

Josh Klemons:

Um, but.

Josh Klemons:

Those answers are out there, they've been

Josh Klemons:

asked a million times.

Josh Klemons:

Um, you just have to know how to find them.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and a lot of this has been, you know, learning

Josh Klemons:

as I go, as with everything I do in a, in a space

Josh Klemons:

that's constantly changing.

Josh Klemons:

I'm constantly learning as I go.

Josh Klemons:

And that's true for podcasts.

Josh Klemons:

Just like it's true for, you know, everything.

Josh Klemons:

I mean, I'm, I'm literally doing things today that

Josh Klemons:

didn't exist 10 years ago.

Josh Klemons:

There was no such thing as TikTok when

Josh Klemons:

I started my business.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and now I post on it every day.

Josh Klemons:

So, you know, it's just the question of like,

Josh Klemons:

keeping up with the field.

Sadaf Beynon:

I mean, exper experience speaks

Sadaf Beynon:

volumes, doesn't it?

Sadaf Beynon:

And you've been in the trenches, so as you said, it's easier

Sadaf Beynon:

to then show others the ropes.

Josh Klemons:

Yep, exactly.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Um, so what would you say were some of the biggest

Sadaf Beynon:

hurdles in all of that?

Josh Klemons:

For me, it's time.

Josh Klemons:

If I had five more hours in the day, I would be podcasting

Josh Klemons:

and blogging three, three to five times more often.

Josh Klemons:

I love doing it, like genuinely.

Josh Klemons:

I have a massive document of things that I would like

Josh Klemons:

to create content around.

Josh Klemons:

I just don't have that like as I'm sure many of your

Josh Klemons:

listeners know, especially if they're like using podcasts as

Josh Klemons:

a way to grow their business.

Josh Klemons:

I'm constantly stuck between growing, you know, like working

Josh Klemons:

on my clients and growing my own business, and this

Josh Klemons:

is one of those like growing my business pieces that.

Josh Klemons:

You know, it's, it's harder to do.

Josh Klemons:

I will say it's easier for me to make time for Hello Merge tag,

Josh Klemons:

because once I've scheduled the interview, it's gonna happen.

Josh Klemons:

Whereas step Up your social.

Josh Klemons:

I've had an idea for an episode of that that I

Josh Klemons:

think is gonna be great.

Josh Klemons:

It's been on the back burner for like two years.

Josh Klemons:

I open the doc, I close it, you know, it's like I've

Josh Klemons:

got it, I've got it charted.

Josh Klemons:

But it's like, I just for context, and I'm sure there

Josh Klemons:

are AI tools that would make some of this easier, but like.

Josh Klemons:

I use AI tools, but like, I also not as, not

Josh Klemons:

so much for podcasting.

Josh Klemons:

Um, like it, you know, I have to write, I, I have

Josh Klemons:

to know what I wanna say.

Josh Klemons:

Like if I could just talk into the mic, but it, it's gotta be

Josh Klemons:

under 10 minutes, so I gotta get to the heart of it and

Josh Klemons:

I have to do it succinctly.

Josh Klemons:

So I typically will write and edit the draft, record

Josh Klemons:

it, which takes, well more than 10 minutes, you

Josh Klemons:

know, you gotta like re recreate stuff and whatever.

Josh Klemons:

Um.

Josh Klemons:

Pull up the intro, the outro, all that, uh, then

Josh Klemons:

drop it so that it's live.

Josh Klemons:

Then, then I create a blog post.

Josh Klemons:

Then I have to, and I need a graphic to do that.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and then I share it on social.

Josh Klemons:

So, you know, that whole process can easily be

Josh Klemons:

three to four hours minimum for a 10 minute episode.

Josh Klemons:

So it's worth noting with Hello Merch tag, where

Josh Klemons:

I'm doing interviews.

Josh Klemons:

I would say it's significantly more than three to four

Josh Klemons:

hours because I have to connect with the guests.

Josh Klemons:

I have to research to be prepared.

Josh Klemons:

I like.

Josh Klemons:

A huge part of what I'm doing is asking good questions, right?

Josh Klemons:

Like, I am there to like be a good, uh, asker of questions.

Josh Klemons:

Um, then I have to edit the episode down because there's

Josh Klemons:

always at least something that has to come out.

Josh Klemons:

Even even the best guest, you know, says something

Josh Klemons:

and starts over or whatever.

Josh Klemons:

Um, sometimes I have to edit them significantly.

Josh Klemons:

Usually I have to edit them a little bit, uh,

Josh Klemons:

then the blog post, then the social, the graphics.

Josh Klemons:

So it's a huge process.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and certainly I could outsource some of

Josh Klemons:

that, but honestly, like.

Josh Klemons:

I have a hard time outsourcing some of this because it's

Josh Klemons:

such a. I'm sure I could find somebody that could edit

Josh Klemons:

my episodes, but because of the political nature, it can

Josh Klemons:

be hard to know what you're listening for if you're not

Josh Klemons:

like immersed in this world.

Josh Klemons:

So I have found it much more daunting to think

Josh Klemons:

about outsourcing.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I'm sure like if I went, if I hired a consultant and

Josh Klemons:

said, how can I do this easier?

Josh Klemons:

The first thing they would say is, don't

Josh Klemons:

edit your own episodes.

Josh Klemons:

But frankly, I don't trust anybody else to

Josh Klemons:

do it at the moment.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Because mm-hmm.

Josh Klemons:

They're hard conversations and I'm having like, in-depth

Josh Klemons:

political conversations.

Josh Klemons:

And if you're not like.

Josh Klemons:

Paying attention to politics, you might not understand like,

Josh Klemons:

oh, we should not have said that, or, oh, you definitely,

Josh Klemons:

you know, need to leave that in even though maybe he didn't

Josh Klemons:

say it as perfectly as he might have or, you know, whatnot.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense

Sadaf Beynon:

with the other ones.

Sadaf Beynon:

Um, the step up socials, do you batch record those?

Sadaf Beynon:

Uh, no.

Sadaf Beynon:

No,

Josh Klemons:

no, I typically, I've, I've thought about it.

Josh Klemons:

I've been like, oh, I'm gonna do five this month and, or this

Josh Klemons:

week, and then, but I just, um, it's enough time to do one.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Like, it, it's not easier for me to do two together

Josh Klemons:

than it is for me to do one and then just do it again.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I have lots of ideas and when I have time, I just try

Josh Klemons:

to pull out, you know, pull out the script and write it.

Josh Klemons:

The hardest part is typically getting the script like

Josh Klemons:

from my head onto paper so that I can like, get going.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Was there ever a time when you wanted to quit?

Sadaf Beynon:

Was 'cause it was too much.

Josh Klemons:

No, I love it.

Josh Klemons:

I mean, uh, but again, with Step Up Your social and frankly

Josh Klemons:

with both of them, I'm not on a schedule for either.

Josh Klemons:

Um, which makes it a lot easier.

Josh Klemons:

Like I work in politics and last the, you know, four months

Josh Klemons:

heading into November last year was I was drowning in work.

Josh Klemons:

And you can tell, you can go listen check on my podcast list.

Josh Klemons:

I made very few.

Josh Klemons:

And since November I have made like.

Josh Klemons:

10 episodes, you know, like, like now that I have time, I'm

Josh Klemons:

drowning in 'em in a good way.

Josh Klemons:

Like I'm loving it.

Josh Klemons:

But, you know, so like the fact that I, I never committed

Josh Klemons:

to doing every Thursday and nobody's expecting that.

Josh Klemons:

So it makes it a lot easier.

Josh Klemons:

I absolutely think I would grow faster if I committed

Josh Klemons:

to doing every Thursday, but it's just not, it's not my

Josh Klemons:

goal and it's not my process.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I would need to change, my business would've to change

Josh Klemons:

dramatically for me to like, commit to doing these weekly.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and my audience.

Josh Klemons:

You know, it's just not the kind of audience

Josh Klemons:

I'm building right now.

Josh Klemons:

Um, that could change in the future.

Josh Klemons:

And again, I'm, most of the podcasts I listen

Josh Klemons:

to publish regularly.

Josh Klemons:

Mine doesn't, and it, it just, it is what it is for me.

Josh Klemons:

It's much more about adding value into the world than

Josh Klemons:

like creating a schedule.

Josh Klemons:

I. You know what I mean?

Josh Klemons:

So like there's no reason to quit 'cause I could take

Josh Klemons:

six months off if I need to.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Which is, which is nice that that freedom.

Josh Klemons:

Absolutely.

Josh Klemons:

Like I hadn't done a Step Up Your social episode in quite

Josh Klemons:

some time before My most recent one, which I did in

Josh Klemons:

January about Blue Sky and like, but I still promote it.

Josh Klemons:

But I have a podcast 'cause it's still out there.

Josh Klemons:

And again, those episodes are evergreen and ready to go.

Josh Klemons:

It's not like we're talking about an episode

Josh Klemons:

of television that was.

Josh Klemons:

Six months old, like, which I listen to podcasts like that.

Josh Klemons:

I say that with love, not anything else.

Josh Klemons:

Um, but you know, it's just different.

Josh Klemons:

Like they're evergreen.

Josh Klemons:

Like you can listen to it forever.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

No, that's cool.

Sadaf Beynon:

Josh.

Sadaf Beynon:

Um, looking ahead, where do you see your podcast going

Sadaf Beynon:

in the next year or so?

Josh Klemons:

Yeah, it's a good question.

Josh Klemons:

I just had some pretty big jumps, I think

Josh Klemons:

for Hello Merge tag.

Josh Klemons:

I've had a couple really interesting guests and I got

Josh Klemons:

like, I, I had like a couple big things happen on the

Josh Klemons:

podcast as far as like just pulling folks in and like having

Josh Klemons:

some bigger conversations.

Josh Klemons:

Um.

Josh Klemons:

I don't know.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, again, it would be like me saying like, where's my

Josh Klemons:

blogging gonna be in a year?

Josh Klemons:

I don't know.

Josh Klemons:

Just more of it.

Josh Klemons:

Like, I don't think about, again, there are plenty

Josh Klemons:

of people out there who are trying to make a

Josh Klemons:

living as a podcast host.

Josh Klemons:

I am not one of those people.

Josh Klemons:

Like, um, I do have a sponsor for one of my

Josh Klemons:

podcasts that came to me.

Josh Klemons:

I wasn't seeking it, but it worked out.

Josh Klemons:

It was a great fit, or I would've said no.

Josh Klemons:

Um, but for me it's much more about, you know, continuing to

Josh Klemons:

have conversations with people that I admire and respect

Josh Klemons:

and that I wanna get to know.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, and also like bringing folks.

Josh Klemons:

That live in my world at that intersection of social media

Josh Klemons:

and politics, um, behind the door and like, you know, like

Josh Klemons:

I'm getting smarter and the listeners are getting smarter

Josh Klemons:

at the same time because the guests are like, I'm finding

Josh Klemons:

guests that are just so knowledgeable and so smart.

Josh Klemons:

Um, which is also a challenge, you know, like those folks

Josh Klemons:

are also very busy and it can be hard, you know,

Josh Klemons:

some folks are an easy Yes.

Josh Klemons:

And some folks, I chase them and you know, they either

Josh Klemons:

ignore me or say no and.

Josh Klemons:

That's fine.

Josh Klemons:

It is what it is.

Josh Klemons:

Like if you're, if you're never getting a no, then

Josh Klemons:

you're not trying hard enough.

Josh Klemons:

You know, like, like I could easily get like, you know,

Josh Klemons:

there are a lot of people that I would love to have

Josh Klemons:

and I track all my guests.

Josh Klemons:

Um, and I have a whole lot of people that have just like

Josh Klemons:

either ignored me or said no, but I've had some amazing

Josh Klemons:

guests on and I've got some more lined up and, you know,

Josh Klemons:

excited to see where it goes.

Josh Klemons:

But yeah, I've never really thought about my business

Josh Klemons:

as far as like, what's it gonna look like in a year?

Josh Klemons:

'cause I'm just kind of like.

Josh Klemons:

I just keep going and it just keeps working and having fun

Josh Klemons:

with it in the, in the process.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Why,

Sadaf Beynon:

why fix something that isn't broken, right.

Josh Klemons:

Exactly.

Josh Klemons:

Exactly.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

And I, I think also, even though you're not trying to, um.

Sadaf Beynon:

You know, you said, I'm not trying to make money off of

Sadaf Beynon:

being a host, but it's clear that your pod, your podcasts

Sadaf Beynon:

are a real powerful marketing tool for your business.

Josh Klemons:

Absolutely.

Josh Klemons:

I've had leads come in through it and I've grown my, like, more

Josh Klemons:

people know who I am because of this podcast, which is not

Josh Klemons:

why I started per se, but I mean, you know, it's nice.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I've been able to, you know, yeah, there's a lot

Josh Klemons:

of more people in my space, uh, who are aware of me.

Josh Klemons:

So Cool.

Josh Klemons:

Um.

Josh Klemons:

For me, it was like, I just like, I wish somebody else was

Josh Klemons:

having these conversations.

Josh Klemons:

I would've just been listening, but they weren't.

Josh Klemons:

So I was like, fine, I'll do it.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

So Josh, um, you said about people in your space.

Sadaf Beynon:

What advice would you give to someone in your

Sadaf Beynon:

space that was thinking about launching a podcast?

Josh Klemons:

Well, in my space, particularly, like I'm

Josh Klemons:

talking like that intersection of social and digital or of

Josh Klemons:

politics and social, you know, don't launch it, just come

Josh Klemons:

on mine, uh, at this point.

Josh Klemons:

But no, uh, to those listening out there who

Josh Klemons:

are like on the fence, um, podcasts are a lot of work.

Josh Klemons:

Like anybody who says otherwise hasn't really done this, like,

Josh Klemons:

you know, like you're hosting a podcast like the, you have to

Josh Klemons:

coordinate with the guests, you have to prepare for the guests.

Josh Klemons:

You have to like, then take the epi, you have to

Josh Klemons:

do the actual interview.

Josh Klemons:

You have to.

Josh Klemons:

But like there's a ton of value to be had because

Josh Klemons:

you're growing your network and like folks are, you know,

Josh Klemons:

if you've got listeners even not, you don't need, you don't

Josh Klemons:

need, um, Sean Puri from, um, my First Million, he says,

Josh Klemons:

don't try to be well known.

Josh Klemons:

Try to be known well, and I think, you know, my

Josh Klemons:

podcast, I'm not trying to be Pod Save America.

Josh Klemons:

I'm not trying to have 10 million listeners.

Josh Klemons:

That wouldn't make sense for what I'm doing.

Josh Klemons:

I'd much rather have like a small audience

Josh Klemons:

of people that are like really interested in that.

Josh Klemons:

Intersection than like some like mass.

Josh Klemons:

Like maybe one day I'll try to create a podcast

Josh Klemons:

that has like mass appeal.

Josh Klemons:

That's not what hello merge tag is.

Josh Klemons:

It was never my intention.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, I'm much more interested in having a niche conversation,

Josh Klemons:

like for my field and for that it's been great.

Josh Klemons:

So I would say to your listeners who are considering

Josh Klemons:

starting a podcast, ask yourself, is your goal to

Josh Klemons:

have 3 million listeners?

Josh Klemons:

It's like, hell yeah.

Josh Klemons:

Do it.

Josh Klemons:

But like.

Josh Klemons:

Get ready.

Josh Klemons:

It's a, it's a frick.

Josh Klemons:

It's like saying you wanna be famous on the

Josh Klemons:

internet, you wanna have a huge YouTube channel.

Josh Klemons:

Like anything, it's fricking hard.

Josh Klemons:

It's, and not everybody's gonna be able to do it, but

Josh Klemons:

anybody can become an expert in a niche like anybody.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, it's still hard, it's still a ton of work, but

Josh Klemons:

there's a lot of value there.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, even if, you know, you know, your aunt's never heard

Josh Klemons:

you in your, in their iTunes charts or whatever, like,

Josh Klemons:

you're not gonna be like world famous going like, niching down.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, but you don't need to be world famous to be successful.

Josh Klemons:

That's for sure.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

I love what you said.

Sadaf Beynon:

Try to be known Well, rather than well known.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's great.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's

Josh Klemons:

Shahan Puri from My First Million.

Josh Klemons:

He talks about that a lot.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I, that's a podcast I listen to often.

Josh Klemons:

Him and Sam Par.

Josh Klemons:

Okay.

Josh Klemons:

Talk about like kind of business in a fun way, if you will.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

And he said that a few times and it really resonated with me.

Josh Klemons:

Um, people are trying to be well known, like.

Josh Klemons:

You can do dumb things to get well known.

Josh Klemons:

Like that doesn't help you in the, you know, like you

Josh Klemons:

could go run around and be a jerk on the internet and

Josh Klemons:

people will know who you are.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah.

Josh Klemons:

You wanna be known.

Josh Klemons:

Well, you want people to think of you first when they

Josh Klemons:

see an opportunity or when they like think of like,

Josh Klemons:

oh, I have a cool idea.

Josh Klemons:

This would be great for Josh.

Josh Klemons:

And I have stuff like that happen to me all the time.

Josh Klemons:

And I also.

Josh Klemons:

I pass it along constantly.

Josh Klemons:

Like somebody comes to me with something, I'm not the

Josh Klemons:

right person, or somebody has an idea, how do I do this?

Josh Klemons:

I'm like, oh, I got somebody for you.

Josh Klemons:

You know, because I'm constantly like building

Josh Klemons:

connections with new people.

Josh Klemons:

And I've gotten to make like a lot of like

Josh Klemons:

really cool connections through this podcast.

Josh Klemons:

But also in, I'm also very active in a bunch of Facebook

Josh Klemons:

groups that have done that and Slack communities.

Josh Klemons:

Um, you know, there's, there's, there's more than

Josh Klemons:

one way to build a network on the internet, Lord knows.

Josh Klemons:

Um.

Josh Klemons:

I'm, I'm involved in a lot of them and, uh, hello.

Josh Klemons:

Merch tag is one of them.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's awesome.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

I love it.

Sadaf Beynon:

Thank you, Josh.

Sadaf Beynon:

It's been really fun digging into how you use podcasting, the

Sadaf Beynon:

medium to grow your business.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah, it's been fun and if folks wanna find

Josh Klemons:

them, obviously you can find 'em wherever you listen to

Josh Klemons:

podcast, but if you go to joshklemons.com/content, um,

Josh Klemons:

you can find, um, both, uh, my name is Josh k Lemons, like the

Josh Klemons:

fruit, joshklemons.com/content.

Josh Klemons:

Um, you can find both my podcasts with.

Josh Klemons:

Everyone listed.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, I also have a, I mentioned it earlier, I have a newsletter

Josh Klemons:

called Free Digital Tools.

Josh Klemons:

Every two weeks I share two free digital tools.

Josh Klemons:

That's it, like every two weeks.

Josh Klemons:

Two free digital tools in your inbox.

Josh Klemons:

Nothing else.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I blog regularly.

Josh Klemons:

I have a bunch of free tools you can download or use on

Josh Klemons:

my website, and, and then I'm obviously very active in a

Josh Klemons:

lot of social, uh, channels.

Josh Klemons:

All of that can be found at joshklemons.com/content.

Josh Klemons:

And folks should absolutely connect with me.

Josh Klemons:

I love talking about this stuff.

Josh Klemons:

I never get, like, you, you'll run out of questions

Josh Klemons:

before I run out of patience to answer them.

Josh Klemons:

I love this stuff.

Josh Klemons:

I do it all the time.

Josh Klemons:

Um, I, I just, I love digital marketing and I love the power

Josh Klemons:

of the internet to do good.

Josh Klemons:

There's a lot of people using the internet to do bad.

Josh Klemons:

Uh, and I am very much trying to empower those, trying

Josh Klemons:

to do good in the world.

Josh Klemons:

Um.

Josh Klemons:

To, uh, you can see it set up that I have a sign behind me it

Josh Klemons:

says, let's win the internet.

Josh Klemons:

That's like, my whole thing is like, let's win the internet.

Josh Klemons:

Let's find ways to connect with your audience.

Josh Klemons:

Let's find ways to put cool things out into the world.

Josh Klemons:

So yeah, connect with me anytime y'all, and, uh, always happy

Josh Klemons:

to, to nerd out with you about podcasts or anything else

Josh Klemons:

digital marketing related.

Sadaf Beynon:

Awesome.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's perfect.

Sadaf Beynon:

And for those tuning in, you'll find all the links and

Sadaf Beynon:

details in the description.

Sadaf Beynon:

Josh, thanks again so much for joining me today and sharing

Sadaf Beynon:

your podcasting journey with us.

Josh Klemons:

Yeah, thanks for having me.

Sadaf Beynon:

And to everyone else listening,

Sadaf Beynon:

if today's conversation has got you thinking about

Sadaf Beynon:

how podcasting could help you grow your business, I

Sadaf Beynon:

would love to talk to you.

Sadaf Beynon:

Sadaf Beynon:
