As we conclude our series on Discernment, we begin a brand-new journey into one of Scripture's most practical virtues: Wisdom.
Discernment opens our eyes to reality.
Wisdom teaches us how to respond to that reality.
In this opening episode, Matthew explores the biblical foundation of wisdom, showing that wisdom is not merely intelligence or experience—it is knowing the right response because we have first learned to seek God.
Drawing from Proverbs, Isaiah, James, and the life of George Washington, this episode invites us to pursue wisdom as one of life's greatest treasures.

In This Episode
Discernment Leads to Wisdom
Throughout our previous series, we learned to recognize God's voice and discern the times in which we live.
But discernment is only the beginning.
Eventually every believer reaches a moment where action is required.
Wisdom answers the question:
"Now that I see clearly...what should I do?"
Where Does Wisdom Begin?
Scripture gives one consistent answer.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."

True wisdom begins not with education...
Not with intelligence...
Not with life experience...
It begins with a heart that reveres, honors, and seeks God.
Wisdom Must Be Pursued
Proverbs doesn't suggest that wisdom simply appears.
It calls us to pursue it with urgency.
Proverbs 4:5–9
Notice the repeated commands:
- Get wisdom.
- Get understanding.
- Do not forget.
- Do not forsake.
- Love wisdom.
- Exalt wisdom.
Wisdom isn't passive.
It is intentionally pursued.
Isaiah: Wisdom Begins in God's Presence
Isaiah 6 becomes the heartbeat of this episode.
Before Isaiah received his calling...
Before he responded...
Before he spoke God's Word...
He first saw the Lord.
From that encounter flowed four beautiful movements:
- Humility
- Cleansing
- Calling
- Response
Isaiah never asked for wisdom.
He sought God.
And once he truly saw God...
He knew what to do.
George Washington: Wisdom in Action
History provides practical illustrations of biblical wisdom.
Crossing the Delaware
Washington understood the desperate condition of the Continental Army.
Many responses were possible.
Wisdom chose the right one.
His bold attack at Trenton became a turning point in the Revolutionary War.
Laying Down Power
Later, Washington demonstrated another form of wisdom.
Rather than grasping for power after victory, he willingly laid it down.
His servant leadership reflected a timeless biblical principle:
Sometimes wisdom acts boldly.
Sometimes wisdom chooses restraint.
Jesus: The Perfect Expression of Wisdom
Philippians 2 reminds us that Jesus never grasped for power.
Instead...
He humbled Himself.
He became a servant.
True wisdom is always marked by humility.
James Gives Hope
What if we lack wisdom?
James gives an incredibly encouraging answer.
Ask God.
He gives generously.
James also describes the character of heavenly wisdom.
It is:
- Pure
- Peaceable
- Gentle
- Open to reason
- Full of mercy
- Full of good fruit
Biblical wisdom is recognized not merely by what someone knows...
But by the character they display.
