We have in these verses 21-25 a general exhortation to submission amongst our fellow believers, and in all our dealings with others, having regard to those differing stations in life into which the providence of God has brought us. We must always be willing to pay deference to others, even counting the other man as better than ourselves.

Paul applies this general principle of submission to the specific area of marriage. The Bible asserts male headship. Male and female are equal in the sight of God, but God has assigned to the two sexes different roles. Men and women are not exactly the same, but gloriously complementary. Gender is irrevocably fixed by God from the moment of conception; indeed, it was fixed by Him in eternity.

Let us assert with all boldness the absolute authority of God’s word in all of these crucial matters in stark contrast to the fashionable philosophies of our own day.
