The Character of a Person – Daily Wisdom

Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1800 of our trek, and it’s time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today’s trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today’s trek as we increase wisdom and create a living legacy. Proverbs 16:16 says, "How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!"  If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget. Today’s quote is from Malcolm S. Forbes, and it is, “You can easily judge the character of a person by how they treat those who can do nothing for them.”

The Character of a Person

Most businesses, organizations, and relationships are driven by a Quid pro quo philosophy, a Latin phrase used in English to mean an exchange of goods or services. One transfer is contingent upon the other, or “a favor for a favor.” Phrases with similar meanings include: “give and take,” “tit for tat,” “you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours,” and “one hand washes the other.” Based on this philosophy, you cannot tell a person’s character. A person’s true character is only seen when they are willing to serve and assist others when the receiving person can do absolutely nothing for the one giving. A person who has an honorable character is a person who doesn’t expect a return favor. They know that it is impossible to receive anything in return yet are willing, able, and happy to assist another person in need. The Christ-follower should possess this type of character. We need to be willing to help and show the love of Christ to all we encounter, regardless of their ability to do anything for us in return. This is the type of love God has for us, as seen through Jesus Christ. Romans 5:6-11 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.
