I’m sharing the story of “Cliona,” a client who tested her dream career idea in a way that didn’t blow up her finances, relationships, or confidence. She discovered her idea wasn’t the right fit—but that clarity freed her to find a path that doubled her salary, increased her time off, and fit beautifully with her life goals.

You’ll learn my approach to testing career ideas without taking blind leaps, the key questions to ask before making any move, and why getting clear on your values, superpowers, and life goals is the best insurance against career regret.

Transcripts

Lucia Knight:

Hi, I'm Lucia Knight and this is the Joy At Work podcast.

Lucia Knight:

Here's today's question from a listener.

Listener:

I've got this idea half formed, but it feels like the kind of

Listener:

career shift I've been looking for.

Listener:

The problem is I can't seem to get past the fear that it might fail.

Listener:

Is there any way to test whether it's actually the right

Listener:

move before I take the leap?

Lucia Knight:

Blind leaps of faith in terms of career moves

Lucia Knight:

are mostly just for kids because they're easier when we are younger.

Lucia Knight:

In the early stages of our careers, we usually have fewer responsibilities,

Lucia Knight:

less to lose, more time to recover if or when things go wrong.

Lucia Knight:

But when you're further along mid-career midlife, the stakes are different.

Lucia Knight:

They're higher.

Lucia Knight:

They are often financial obligations.

Lucia Knight:

Children, they're like balls of joy who eat money by the second, a mortgage or

Lucia Knight:

rent a beloved family pet who costs much, if not more than a toddler, a volunteer

Lucia Knight:

role or community responsibilities and friendships to nourish and a whole

Lucia Knight:

personality and identity you've built over the last 30, 40, 50, or 60 years.

Lucia Knight:

So it's no wonder that career change feels dangerous.

Lucia Knight:

And since we're smart humans, we try to de-risk it, but sometimes

Lucia Knight:

in trying to protect ourselves, we shoot our ideas down before they've

Lucia Knight:

even had a chance to breathe.

Lucia Knight:

I could do that.

Lucia Knight:

Oh, but no, that wouldn't work because of X, Y, Z. These micro

Lucia Knight:

dreams flare up for a tiny second and then fizzle out again and again.

Lucia Knight:

But sometimes, like for today's listener, an idea keeps coming back.

Lucia Knight:

It feels sticky, it has potential.

Lucia Knight:

It lights something up in you, but the problem is you don't have a

Lucia Knight:

process or a method to test it safely.

Lucia Knight:

So the idea rises up like a rollercoaster, heading up a hill, and

Lucia Knight:

then lose the steam halfway, and then crashes back down again and again.

Lucia Knight:

Let me share this story of Cliona, not her real name.

Lucia Knight:

A client who tested her dream idea out without destroying her life.

Lucia Knight:

She had built a deeply respected career in technology, but was utterly

Lucia Knight:

drained and disillusioned by it.

Lucia Knight:

For years, she dreamed of pivoting into sports coaching, a long held passion.

Lucia Knight:

In her personal life her sports feats and achievements, filled rooms with

Lucia Knight:

swimming, running, and cycling medals.

Lucia Knight:

She made small moves toward the dream that stayed stuck in a loop of slow

Lucia Knight:

progress, fear of failure and frustration.

Lucia Knight:

The dream never quite died, but it never took off either.

Lucia Knight:

She joined the Fierce Emporium program because she was exhausted by the stop

Lucia Knight:

start cycle and the indecision and wanted to test start her idea safely to decide

Lucia Knight:

if it was a go or no go once and for all.

Lucia Knight:

Instead of rushing toward her dream, I asked her to hit pause

Lucia Knight:

while we did some deeper thinking.

Lucia Knight:

Then we zoomed out.

Lucia Knight:

Together, we deeply explored her unique Uber strengths, what I call superpowers,

Lucia Knight:

the things she values, her financial needs and wants over the next decade.

Lucia Knight:

Her real life priorities for the next 10 years, her vision for a

Lucia Knight:

thriving work life and real life over the next decade, the relationship

Lucia Knight:

she wants to invest in forever.

Lucia Knight:

And then with that clarity, Cliona revisited her potential work life dream.

Lucia Knight:

This time she took action.

Lucia Knight:

She interviewed people already in the industry.

Lucia Knight:

She asked the right questions.

Lucia Knight:

She volunteered strategically.

Lucia Knight:

She did structured reflection.

Lucia Knight:

She discovered something surprising.

Lucia Knight:

The dream simply didn't fit at all.

Lucia Knight:

The income ceiling, the lifestyle restrictions, the accepted industry

Lucia Knight:

norms, they didn't align with her full potential or the life she wanted

Lucia Knight:

to design now or in the future.

Lucia Knight:

And the nail in the coffin of her idea was that her unique superpowers wouldn't

Lucia Knight:

be fully used, needed, or even valued.

Lucia Knight:

So letting go of that dream was sad, but freeing.

Lucia Knight:

It opened new doors.

Lucia Knight:

Cleo reconnected with a field she once loved.

Lucia Knight:

She designed a fierce focus action plan.

Lucia Knight:

And within a few months landed a role that doubled her salary, increased

Lucia Knight:

her time off and fit beautifully with her long-term life goals.

Lucia Knight:

I'll include a link to Cleo's case study in the show notes, but you

Lucia Knight:

can get access to a growing number of real case studies that aren't

Lucia Knight:

just simple Cinderella case studies.

Lucia Knight:

They show the actual steps we took to make the right change for each client.

Lucia Knight:

They're all different, as I'm sure you can imagine, because we are.

Lucia Knight:

All different as humans.

Lucia Knight:

Sometimes joy work doesn't come from chasing that idea, but from investigating

Lucia Knight:

whether the idea can really help you thrive or not, and then making the right

Lucia Knight:

decision with all of the insights and information at hand to allow you to

Lucia Knight:

build the work life you deserve, that fits in with the real life you deserve.

Lucia Knight:

So back to our listener.

Lucia Knight:

Here's what I recommend.

Lucia Knight:

Hit pause on the idea for now just long enough to zoom out.

Lucia Knight:

Get clear on what you actually want your next decade to look and feel like,

Lucia Knight:

not just at work, but in real life.

Lucia Knight:

Ask yourself, what kind of financial life do I want?

Lucia Knight:

What relationships do I want to prioritize?

Lucia Knight:

What brings me joy daily?

Lucia Knight:

What do I want to invest my time in?

Lucia Knight:

What matters most to me?

Lucia Knight:

My health, my community, my sense of contribution, my

Lucia Knight:

freedom, or something else?

Lucia Knight:

This is Deep Work.

Lucia Knight:

It's the foundation of the first few weeks of the Fierce

Lucia Knight:

Emporium program, by the way.

Lucia Knight:

So we'll put a link in the show notes in case you want to check it out.

Lucia Knight:

I'll also include a link to some of the video reviews of the program to prove

Lucia Knight:

that real people get real results.

Lucia Knight:

These rather wonderful humans, most of whom do not like being on video,

Lucia Knight:

got results that mattered to them.

Lucia Knight:

Bespoke results.

Lucia Knight:

Brave results and they agree to share those results and their transformation

Lucia Knight:

they've received on video, then revisit the idea with fresh eyes Ask, is this

Lucia Knight:

solving a meaningful problem I care about for people who matter to me?

Lucia Knight:

Do the industry norms the pay, the, the expectations

Lucia Knight:

align with my real life goals?

Lucia Knight:

And crucially, will this new role need.

Lucia Knight:

Value my superpowers because if your superpowers aren't needed

Lucia Knight:

or valued in this new space, that's a gigantic red flag.

Lucia Knight:

Because joy at work comes from using your unique talents daily in ways

Lucia Knight:

that are recognized and rewarded.

Lucia Knight:

And if you can't, your potential for joy at work is hampered from minute one.

Lucia Knight:

And then finally test it in the real world.

Lucia Knight:

Start really small, tiny if you can volunteer or take a paid experiment on the

Lucia Knight:

side, but only if it use your superpowers.

Lucia Knight:

Otherwise, it'll drain your energy or your soul dry, and neither of those will help.

Lucia Knight:

This kind of real world testing is the final puzzle piece before

Lucia Knight:

deciding on a new career direction.

Lucia Knight:

And one last thought on fear of failure, of course.

Lucia Knight:

Making changes in your career is scary, but we're too old to leap blindly.

Lucia Knight:

In my programs, I teach eight foundational career design skills

Lucia Knight:

that make career change less risky emotionally and financially.

Lucia Knight:

And there are master classes to go deep on many of those skills.

Lucia Knight:

And when you have a proven method for testing an idea against your real

Lucia Knight:

world needs, you can either be at peace with letting the wrong idea go

Lucia Knight:

like Cliona or Sprint at it with a deep knowing that you've chosen the

Lucia Knight:

best idea that will let you create a life where you thrive and give you

Lucia Knight:

the confidence that you've got a damn good plan of action to make it happen.

Lucia Knight:

If like our listener.

Lucia Knight:

You have a half formed idea about your future work.

Lucia Knight:

Let's work together to turn it into a brilliantly researched, beautifully

Lucia Knight:

aligned next phase of your work life.

Lucia Knight:

One that has huge potential for joy.
