And today we're going to be talking about all of the super

Speaker:

powers that you already possess.

Speaker:

As a mother and how they can help you build or grow your business.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

So let's start off by talking about the corporate world for a second.

Speaker:

It is generally not very fond or forgiving of motherhood.

Speaker:

From what I understand, I haven't ever been a true corporate girl.

Speaker:

But from, experiences that I have heard from other friends.

Speaker:

If you take time off of work to have a baby.

Speaker:

Or raise your kids.

Speaker:

Or do anything that puts motherhood ahead of your career?

Speaker:

Your career usually suffers.

Speaker:

And then reentering the workforce.

Speaker:

If you choose to do that after raising your children, especially

Speaker:

if it's been a decade or two, a full-time motherhood can be a brutal

Speaker:

experience from what I understand.

Speaker:

And to me, this is such an absolute tragedy.

Speaker:

The corporate world would be so much better off if it was full of mothers.

Speaker:

Can we agree on that?

Speaker:

Let's just agree on that for a second.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Sure of course a stay at home.

Speaker:

Mom is not going to be fully up to date on the latest marketing

Speaker:

strategies or sales techniques.

Speaker:

Okay, fine.

Speaker:

I'll give you that.

Speaker:

But the skills that we develop as mothers raising children.

Speaker:

Are absolutely incredible.

Speaker:

Not only would every corporation be lucky to have an experienced mom running things.

Speaker:

But your dream business would also be equally as blessed.

Speaker:

See where I'm going with this.

Speaker:

We have so much to offer our future businesses or our current businesses.

Speaker:

Just because we are a mom.

Speaker:

So the next time you think why can't do this?

Speaker:

I'm just a mom.

Speaker:

I want you to stop and start thinking about all of the things

Speaker:

and skills and traits and aptitudes.

Speaker:

Do you have developed.

Speaker:

As a mom.

Speaker:

So each of us develops dozens of these throughout our years of being a mom.

Speaker:

And these can serve us in a myriad of ways professionally.

Speaker:

They really can.

Speaker:

So today we're touching on some of my favorite moms superpowers

Speaker:

as I like to call them.

Speaker:

And how they will be a boon to you as an entrepreneur, or they already are.

Speaker:

If you already own your business.

Speaker:

So think of this as your resume.

Speaker:

For you as a CEO of your business.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

This is what we're developing today.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Number one, the first and foremost trait, I think is the most beneficial

Speaker:

that we get as moms and can be useful in our business is project.

Speaker:

Management.

Speaker:

If you give , I want to see this plate out somewhere.

Speaker:

Can we please do a case study on this?

Speaker:

I want to give a 20 something fresh college grad.

Speaker:

And an experienced mom.

Speaker:

Both the same complicated multi-step project.

Speaker:

And I want to see who's going to come out on top.

Speaker:

Who is going to dominate that project.

Speaker:

That's not to say anything bad about the fresh college grad,

Speaker:

but the experience trumps all.

Speaker:

I will tell you who will dominate that project.

Speaker:

It will be the woman who has had to call three doctors and two pharmacies and her

Speaker:

insurance company four different times before getting the appropriate treatment

Speaker:

for her chronically ill child that's who is going to win that project case study.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Or the mom who had organized a birthday party for 17, eight year olds.

Speaker:

Complete with a themed cake and invitations and goodie bags and activities

Speaker:

to keep everyone occupied and to break up a couple of fights in the meantime.

Speaker:

Or it will be the woman who coordinated full blown kitchen remodel, and

Speaker:

had to communicate effectively with four different contractors.

Speaker:

Budget the project appropriately.

Speaker:

And it was the cost of a new car.

Speaker:

And feed her children for six weeks using nothing but a hot plate in the bathroom.

Speaker:

So our experience as mothers makes us more than qualified to handle

Speaker:

very complex multi-step projects that require a lot of moving parts.

Speaker:

We're just good at that.

Speaker:

Weird divinely designed to be multitaskers.

Speaker:

Why?

Speaker:

Because we have to keep the two year old out of the toilet at the same time as

Speaker:

making dinner and keeping the six year old from fighting with the eight year old.

Speaker:

That's just what we do.

Speaker:

We are divinely designed that way and we are exceptionally good at it.

Speaker:

So your experience as a mom and a household manager has given

Speaker:

you countless opportunities.

Speaker:

To break down, divvy up and execute complicated and important

Speaker:

projects and tasks that many.

Speaker:

Average citizens would balk at.

Speaker:

They would say, there's no way I can do that.

Speaker:

That looks way too hard.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

We know we eat hard for breakfast.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

That's what we moms do.

Speaker:

And every single day, especially if you're a mom of more than a couple of

Speaker:

kids is a large project management.

Speaker:

Scenario, right.

Speaker:

It is managing all the things and the carpools and the appointments and

Speaker:

the phone calls and the bills to pay.

Speaker:

We're just good at that.

Speaker:

So please do not ever sell yourself short on managing work projects.

Speaker:

If you are an experienced mom.

Speaker:

Number two.

Speaker:

Communication and human resources.

Speaker:

You're probably thinking about the potential of hiring and managing a team.

Speaker:

As something about as enjoyable as a root canal, you're probably terrified of it.

Speaker:

It seems really, really scary.

Speaker:

However, I will say, have you ever tried to get twin teenage girls

Speaker:

to clean up the room together?

Speaker:

It can't be much worse than that.

Speaker:

If I write.

Speaker:

You guys, we have so much experience managing people and not managing grown

Speaker:

adults that know how to think for themselves, managing small little people

Speaker:

that don't have executive function skills.

Speaker:

We have so much skill when it comes to helping people be motivated

Speaker:

and inspired to do something that helps the family at large.

Speaker:

Managing a team is not much different.

Speaker:

So families actually offer an unmatched level of relationship,

Speaker:

experience and interpersonal skills.

Speaker:

So I personally have learned how to make requests of my children

Speaker:

and other family members.

Speaker:

How to require follow-through checking back in with me.

Speaker:

How to apologize.

Speaker:

How to forgive.

Speaker:

How to lay down the law and create consequences that I will follow through

Speaker:

with, if that thing doesn't get done.

Speaker:

And so much more

Speaker:

now, I'm not saying that when you hire a couple of employees, you

Speaker:

treat them like your seven year old.

Speaker:

Obviously we treat each other like adults with respect.

Speaker:

But if you can do it with a child, you can do it with an adult who

Speaker:

has a lot more mature and more capable and more experienced.

Speaker:

We have those skills as mothers.

Speaker:

So again, if you are feeling like the idea of building a team, even

Speaker:

just hiring an assistant is scary.

Speaker:

Especially if you're a woman who identifies as a people pleaser, that

Speaker:

can be difficult because you don't want to tell people when they're doing

Speaker:

something wrong, you, you hate the idea of possibly having to lay someone off.

Speaker:

But I just want to tell you that you already have everything.

Speaker:

You need to be a grade, a boss.

Speaker:

Because you already are, you are already managing a team of tiny little

Speaker:

minions who don't know how to live life, who don't know how to care

Speaker:

for themselves, who don't know how to treat each other with kindness.

Speaker:

And you are already doing that exceptionally well.

Speaker:

So translating those skills into managing a team of adults, even just one or two

Speaker:

people to help you out is going to be.

Speaker:

Cake.

Speaker:

The third superpower is the ability to feel and experience negative emotion.

Speaker:

So in a couple of past episodes, I've talked about this at negative emotion.

Speaker:

It is the only thing standing between us and our dreams.

Speaker:

I promise you it's the only.

Speaker:

Thing.

Speaker:

It's the fear.

Speaker:

It's the frustration.

Speaker:

It's the stress.

Speaker:

It's the overwhelm.

Speaker:

The fear again.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

The embarrassment, the shame.

Speaker:

Those emotions are what keep us stuck and keep us from moving forward on our dreams.

Speaker:

But being a mom is also full of negative emotion, really hard stuff.

Speaker:

I would say way harder than building a business.

Speaker:

Things like heartache and disappointment and frustration and irritation.

Speaker:

And so much more, . We have so much experience feeling and processing

Speaker:

negative emotion because of these family relationships that are so tricky.

Speaker:

Guess what building a business is like, it's very similar.

Speaker:

If we are really, truly only afraid of the scary emotions

Speaker:

that happen when we do things.

Speaker:

Then the rest of this is going to be easy.

Speaker:

So easy because it's just full of more of that negative emotion.

Speaker:

Now, I'm not saying you have to love it.

Speaker:

I'm not saying you have to go build your business and just think, oh, I can't wait

Speaker:

to feel disappointment or frustration.

Speaker:

Because there is so much good as well.

Speaker:

Like would you tell a new mom and get ready for disappointment or frustration

Speaker:

your Pat's going to be full of that?

Speaker:

Well, I hope not.

Speaker:

I hope you would say, oh, motherhood is such a wild ride.

Speaker:

I love it.

Speaker:

It's amazing.

Speaker:

Businesses are the same way they are full of disappointment and

Speaker:

frustration and the negative emotion, but so full of joy and freedom and

Speaker:

amazing positive emotions as well.

Speaker:

So take that ability to feel negative emotion, to process it and to be okay and

Speaker:

translate that right into your business.

Speaker:

And you're going to be light years ahead of those who do not know how

Speaker:

to feel failure and disappointment and get back up on their feet.

Speaker:

I mean after all we've made human beings with our bodies and push them out.

Speaker:

I think we can build a business, right.

Speaker:

Piece of cake.

Speaker:

Here is a site quick side note.

Speaker:

The main difference here between motherhood, the negative emotion and

Speaker:

motherhood and the negative emotion and building a business is that you can

Speaker:

control a lot more in your business.

Speaker:

Unlike controlling your children that don't like to be controlled.

Speaker:

And you might feel tempted to quit.

Speaker:

Most of us never actually seriously entertain the idea of quitting motherhood.

Speaker:

We're in it for the long haul.

Speaker:

So there's your, your pro tip go into business.

Speaker:

Like you went into motherhood.

Speaker:

There is no quitting.

Speaker:

There is no giving up.

Speaker:

If you commit up front to your business, the way you commit up front to motherhood

Speaker:

then when that discomfort comes up, it will not shake.

Speaker:

You you'll go.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

This is the part I expected.

Speaker:

You know, when your kid throws a shoe at you and says they hate you, do

Speaker:

you immediately think I'm leaving?

Speaker:

Never coming back.

Speaker:

This kid is a jerk.

Speaker:

I didn't sign up for this maybe for a second, but hopefully we never

Speaker:

really seriously consider that.

Speaker:

The same has to go for your business.

Speaker:

You have to go, oh, that didn't go as expected.

Speaker:

That was a little bit of a failure.

Speaker:

Shoot.

Speaker:

What are we going to try next?

Speaker:

It's not a matter of it's time to quit.

Speaker:

It's a matter of let's pivot and try something else.

Speaker:

Number four.

Speaker:

Selflessness being a mother.

Speaker:

I do not have to tell you requires massive amounts of patience and self denial.

Speaker:

Putting ourselves last is just kind of par for the course for moms,

Speaker:

which I think is such a beautiful thing that we are naturally.

Speaker:

Drawn to doing something that makes us last.

Speaker:

I mean, can you think of anything else more Christ-like

Speaker:

and beautiful and wonderful.

Speaker:

Then that self denial of a mother we put our bodies and our

Speaker:

minds through the ringer for our children and we sacrifice so much.

Speaker:

Which means that we already know how to put others ahead of ourselves.

Speaker:

Being a great leader, entrepreneur and a boss requires the same

Speaker:

thing to a certain extent.

Speaker:

No, you shouldn't let your employees interrupt you while you're on your

Speaker:

bathroom break or come knock on the door when you're in the shower.

Speaker:

That would be weird.

Speaker:

But.

Speaker:

Being able to lead with selflessness and empathy and compassion.

Speaker:

Is something that I would argue most fortune 500 CEOs do not know how to do.

Speaker:

But mothers know how to do it.

Speaker:

Mothers know how to be selfless.

Speaker:

They know how to put others first.

Speaker:

They know how to put customers and clients needs.

Speaker:

Ahead of their bottom line because they are natural leaders.

Speaker:

Who love people.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Think about that for a minute.

Speaker:

Remember, you already have everything you need to become an incredible entrepreneur.

Speaker:

I think one of the biggest mistakes that too many moms make when

Speaker:

going into business is thinking of all the things that they lack.

Speaker:

Well, I don't have a business degree.

Speaker:

Why don't have this education, why don't have this certification?

Speaker:

You have everything you need to become an incredible entrepreneur.

Speaker:

And to grow your business to impossible Heights.

Speaker:

I promise you.

Speaker:

I know because I've seen it done and I've done it myself.

Speaker:

You have everything you need, but you are going to have to

Speaker:

dig deep to find some of that.

Speaker:

Why?

Speaker:

Because we don't walk around talking about how wonderful we are.

Speaker:

Unfortunately, I think we should.

Speaker:

I think we should walk around talking about all our amazing skills and

Speaker:

talents way more often than you do.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

Your challenge this week is to sit down with a journal and write

Speaker:

out that resume for yourself.

Speaker:

You're going to be a CEO of this incredible company.

Speaker:

Write out what you have to offer that position.

Speaker:

I write it out as if you were going to hire yourself and don't take

Speaker:

any of your skills for granted.

Speaker:

When your kid throws up on the carpet and you think nothing of going

Speaker:

and cleaning it up and, you know, staying up all night with a sick

Speaker:

baby, don't take that for granted.

Speaker:

What did that require that required?

Speaker:

Self-denial it required self sacrifice required.

Speaker:

Love it required hard work and some elbow grease.

Speaker:

Everything you do as a mother sets you up for success in a business.

Speaker:

Ask yourself, what skills and talents do I already have that

Speaker:

will serve me as a business owner.

Speaker:

And what else can I do to develop them further?

Speaker:

And remember nothing is out of reach for you.

Speaker:

If you do find some holes in your knowledge and your skills

Speaker:

as building a business, which you will, we all do, you can learn and

Speaker:

develop anything you need to know.

Speaker:

There's Google and a bazillion experts out there that want

Speaker:

to give you their, knowledge.

Speaker:

And you can even outsource the ones that you hate to do, or you really,

Speaker:

really think as a weakness for you.

Speaker:

There is nothing that is out of reach for you,

Speaker:

especially as an amazing mom with all these superpowers.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:
