Xhafer:

Hello and welcome to Who Are You.

2

:

We're a reasonably well done sci-fi watch

cast hosted by two former strangers.

3

:

Now friends who were a little

bit more awake than last week.

4

:

I'm Tfe.

5

:

Laura: And I am Laura.

6

:

Xhafer: And uh, we're here,

we're talking about season

7

:

three, episode 16 of 2000 four's.

8

:

Battlestar Galactica.

9

:

Dirty Hands.

10

:

There has to be a song

named Dirty Hands, right?

11

:

I feel like I should have done

maybe a modicum of research

12

:

before we started recording.

13

:

Whoops.

14

:

Laura: There's gotta be a bunch, right?

15

:

cause there's so many ways you can

take the phrase dirty hands as we

16

:

have two in this episode at least.

17

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

18

:

Dirty Hands.

19

:

There's a song by the Black Lips,

20

:

Laura: okay.

21

:

Xhafer: and then Kendra Dantes has

one called Dirty Hands, gone Mad.

22

:

Laura: Mm mm

23

:

Xhafer: named Dirty Hands.

24

:

Laura: Yeah.

25

:

Xhafer: They have a combined 2000, some

listens on two albums, it looks like,

26

:

Laura: Okay.

27

:

Xhafer: I'm guessing.

28

:

There's a punk vibe.

29

:

Laura: it feels very punky.

30

:

Xhafer: They've got one album called One

Hand, two Hands, clean Hand, dirty Hands.

31

:

They've gotten ex uh, brain freeze.

32

:

No.

33

:

Me, Newports.

34

:

I hope that they're a punk band.

35

:

I'm not gonna listen to

'em to find out though.

36

:

Laura: I'm not gonna throw any stones

in the low number of listens house.

37

:

Xhafer: Yeah, right.

38

:

The room we have,

39

:

Laura: Yeah.

40

:

Good for you guys.

41

:

Xhafer: I don't say it to shame them.

42

:

I say it to just like, this is a,

this is a garage band of some variety.

43

:

Laura: Yeah, sure.

44

:

Xhafer: they're doing their

recordings for funsies.

45

:

They're not

46

:

Laura: Yeah.

47

:

Xhafer: touring, I guess.

48

:

I don't know.

49

:

I don't even know what

the analog would be.

50

:

I don't think MySpace told us how many

listens we got back when I was like

51

:

in a band that was able to get played

on the radio and do two, like we did.

52

:

We never left the state really,

but like do like, probably like a

53

:

hundred some shows over two years.

54

:

Laura: Yeah,

55

:

Xhafer: So there's lots of shows.

56

:

And I, I have no idea what that

was like, like from a listen's

57

:

perspective, what that would be.

58

:

'cause that was before any of this stuff.

59

:

Anyways,

60

:

Laura: Man.

61

:

Thinking back to those days.

62

:

Xhafer: yeah, man, I spent today doing

research on moving my entire computing

63

:

ecosystem off of Windows and onto Linux.

64

:

'cause I'm so sick of this

shit from Microsoft right now.

65

:

Laura: Yeah.

66

:

Yeah.

67

:

My dad did a Linux computer.

68

:

Xhafer: the Spotifys and the,

the Google Musics of the world.

69

:

Laura: Yeah.

70

:

I, I was thinking the other day about

just like how many pictures I have

71

:

of my children compared to how many

pictures my parents had of me, just

72

:

because I have a camera in my pocket

73

:

Xhafer: yeah.

74

:

Laura: and like, I don't even have any of

my pictures from my, when I was little.

75

:

Did your parents give you any of yours?

76

:

Do you have any little GE

running around your house?

77

:

Xhafer: I, there are a

couple photos that I have.

78

:

My mom still has most of them.

79

:

But having recently sold her house

and kind of downsized her life a

80

:

ton, I actually within the last

three months got several photo albums

81

:

that were my grandparents, where

there are childhood photos of me,

82

:

Laura: Nice

83

:

Xhafer: that actually I haven't really

gone through yet because I'm waiting

84

:

for my uncle and one of my cousins

to get together of his generation

85

:

Laura: Uhhuh.

86

:

Xhafer: so that we can all go

through them together and kind

87

:

of decide who's getting what.

88

:

Laura: Sure.

89

:

Yeah.

90

:

That's neat.

91

:

Xhafer: will be in that mix too, I'm

sure, but she probably won't want

92

:

anything because that's her way.

93

:

Laura: Okay.

94

:

Xhafer: She surprised me a couple of times

here and there by wanting to sentimental

95

:

photo, but it is always a surprise

when she desires something like that.

96

:

Laura: Hmm.

97

:

Yeah, no, I don't, my parents haven't

shoved any pictures at me yet.

98

:

I've gotten other boxes of

stuff, but not any pictures yet.

99

:

And my mom had, did I tell you this story?

100

:

She had a like charcoal drawing of

me done from an artist in the, St.

101

:

Louis Square in New Orleans.

102

:

Like I sat there for, I don't know, it

was probably like three hours of this

103

:

person doing a charcoal drawing of me.

104

:

'cause it was really detailed and nice.

105

:

This was like when I was a teenager

106

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

107

:

Laura: and she gifted that

to Erin when we got married.

108

:

Xhafer: Aw, that's cute.

109

:

Laura: It's, it's cute, but it's also

like now I have this very large charcoal

110

:

portrait in a very nice frame of

myself just hanging by my dining table.

111

:

'cause we don't know

what else to do with it.

112

:

Xhafer: Yeah, I would suggest spare room.

113

:

Laura: Mm-hmm.

114

:

Xhafer: I think spare room's

the best place for that

115

:

Laura: I mean, that's this room, so

you wanna see it in the wall behind me?

116

:

Xhafer: well, it's really like, it's

just to remind guests where they're

117

:

at in the middle of the night, they

wake up, they see your giant charcoal

118

:

drawing, they're like, oh, I'm at Laura's.

119

:

That's right.

120

:

Back asleep.

121

:

I don't know if anyone else

wakes up not knowing where they

122

:

are, if it's not their bedroom.

123

:

Sometimes

124

:

Laura: I think that's everybody.

125

:

Yeah.

126

:

Xhafer: is my bedroom, sometimes I

will say that's something that left me

127

:

when I traveled for work, I got used

to it after maybe four or five months

128

:

of traveling consistently for work.

129

:

I did that for five years and

it took a solid five or six

130

:

years before that came back.

131

:

Laura: Yeah.

132

:

That makes sense.

133

:

Yeah.

134

:

Xhafer: Anyways.

135

:

Laura: no, I would like to see more little

photos of little me now that I have so

136

:

many of my children, but eh, the day

137

:

Xhafer: we gonna talk

about that next episode?

138

:

Laura: we picked the wrong intro.

139

:

Xhafer: We did, we did.

140

:

It's fine.

141

:

Um,

142

:

Laura: Yeah, it's fine.

143

:

I don't, I mean, I don't have really

like any, um, OSHA violation experience

144

:

to share with the people, which I feel

would be the intro for this episode.

145

:

Well, you've already told

your OSHA stories for

146

:

Xhafer: I've, I've got a ton of

OSHA stories, I'm sure I've got

147

:

OSHA stories I haven't told.

148

:

Um, there was one time I

was moving a soda aisle.

149

:

I wanna say I was moving about

24 feet of two liters and cans

150

:

and all of it was still on there.

151

:

We got the entire aisle up

on skates to move it around

152

:

Laura: Fun.

153

:

Xhafer: and while we were moving it.

154

:

So steel shelving, right?

155

:

You've got the uprights, which

are the big posts in the center.

156

:

Those are what hold the shelves in.

157

:

At the bottom of the uprights, you

have feet that are like I-beam style.

158

:

They're not thick like I-beams,

but they're like miniature little

159

:

I-beams that hold the whole thing up

160

:

and keep it upright.

161

:

They keep the upright upright.

162

:

Um, and while we were moving this

aisle, one of them collapsed and

163

:

folded under itself under the its

own weight because we're, we're

164

:

moving this, it's full of soda.

165

:

This is a very heavy aisle,

166

:

Laura: Mm-hmm.

167

:

Xhafer: and we had to have three

guys brace that section of it to

168

:

get it up off the ground enough to

remove the foot and put a new one on.

169

:

I'm sure that was an OSHA violation.

170

:

That was, that was dangerous

work there for a minute because

171

:

that was, that's crushy weight.

172

:

Laura: Yeah,

173

:

Xhafer: there's, there, I

probably haven't told that one.

174

:

Laura: but nobody was maimed

in the changing of the aisles.

175

:

Xhafer: I never had to

take anyone to urgent care,

176

:

Laura: Good, good.

177

:

Xhafer: any set I ever did, and the

only person who ever got hurt enough

178

:

to need workman's comp on any reset or

any remodel I ever did over 10 years

179

:

of doing that professionally was me.

180

:

And it was me being dumb and I.

181

:

Tweaked my back real bad while picking

up the five gallon jugs of paint.

182

:

We were doing a paint remodel.

183

:

We were doing one a night every night

for two months, and I was moving one

184

:

of 'em and I had one in both hands

and I went to like grab a third or

185

:

something and I was just moving too much.

186

:

And the way I just like tweaked

everything, threw my back

187

:

out of alignment real bad.

188

:

And I went on workman's comp for

like two weeks for a back injury

189

:

and had to go to a chiropractor and

get x-rays and all kinds of stuff.

190

:

And that's the only injury though.

191

:

And

192

:

Laura: That's good.

193

:

Xhafer: like I said, my own fault

194

:

Laura: I do not know how many injuries

there have been at this tillium refiner.

195

:

It is not looking good

196

:

Xhafer: sure.

197

:

I mean, we see one,

198

:

Laura: Yeah,

199

:

Xhafer: no one stops to ask

Gaywood what radicalized him.

200

:

We all see it.

201

:

You don't have to ask.

202

:

Laura: Right?

203

:

Xhafer: but yeah uh, we

can get into this episode.

204

:

It's season three, episode 16.

205

:

Dirty Hands.

206

:

We open on the knuckle Draggers

complaining about being

207

:

overworked and underappreciated.

208

:

As Celick rolls in with a laundry

delivery, we find that she's

209

:

been trying to become a pilot,

aced the exam she had to take,

210

:

Laura: Uhhuh.

211

:

Xhafer: but her role in her ability

to repair avionics is irreplaceable.

212

:

So she was turned down for advancement.

213

:

She's delivering laundry.

214

:

Laura: I wondered if we were going a

place with this, that Tyrell's, the

215

:

one who said, no, no, I need her here.

216

:

But that doesn't, doesn't

seem to be explored at all.

217

:

Xhafer: he, he kind of like refers to

like, Hey, you know, like you are iPlay.

218

:

Like he sounds a little

guilty when he talks to her

219

:

Laura: yeah, he's like, you're

my best avionics person.

220

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

221

:

Laura: And maybe it is Tyrell who

at first doesn't wanna let her go.

222

:

I wish that had been a little

bit more explicit rather than

223

:

just like, oh, the bureaucracy.

224

:

But I, I was like, hmm, I feel like it's

probably, you know, you talk to the new

225

:

manager, you talk to the old manager

and you say, what do you guys think?

226

:

And it new manager can be like,

yeah, I'd love to have him on board.

227

:

But old manager's like, nah,

I can't lose this person.

228

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

229

:

Laura: Then these things

230

:

Xhafer: One of the best pieces of

business advice, career advice I ever got

231

:

is no one irreplaceable gets promoted.

232

:

Laura: Mm-hmm.

233

:

Xhafer: That has been so

fucking true my entire career.

234

:

And why I always have someone that

I'm training to do my job, whether or

235

:

not it's my job to train someone to

do my job because there will, there's

236

:

always an obvious replacement for me.

237

:

So that way, when it's time for someone

to step up, I am the clear choice.

238

:

A hundred percent.

239

:

That's how you do it, y'all.

240

:

That's business, life, trust.

241

:

Laura: Yep.

242

:

But people don't like to do that

because they're like, oh, if I

243

:

can be essential, then I'm safe.

244

:

And it's like, well, you know,

no one's ever really safe, so,

245

:

Xhafer: one, no one is, no.

246

:

If they're gonna let you go,

they're gonna let you go.

247

:

Laura: Yeah,

248

:

Xhafer: you know that ex be swinging.

249

:

Laura: yeah.

250

:

I was like, man.

251

:

If, if I was running Galactica,

which obviously that would

252

:

be a poor choice because

253

:

uh,

254

:

Xhafer: I mean,

255

:

Laura: not

256

:

Xhafer: wanna do it.

257

:

Laura: not equipped, but a decision

I would make right away, just like

258

:

with the existing knowledge that I

have, would be like everybody needs to

259

:

cross train with everybody right now.

260

:

I need somebody who's been

backing up Selix for like 12

261

:

weeks already learning avionics.

262

:

Like, and then if she wants to

go be pilot, like hey fine, we've

263

:

got this cross-trained person.

264

:

Like, 'cause we do need pilots

265

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

266

:

Laura: unquestionable.

267

:

Like we're gonna need them.

268

:

So

269

:

Xhafer: Do you need pilots?

270

:

Like you need a couple to do Raptor stuff?

271

:

For

272

:

Laura: Yeah.

273

:

Well you need vipers

274

:

Xhafer: What?

275

:

What do the Vipers actually do in this

story besides B targets for Raiders

276

:

that never make it to the fleet?

277

:

Laura: I mean, they shoot

down some things too.

278

:

Xhafer: Well, it's just like most, I'm

just saying most of the time the Vipers.

279

:

Are there to be a plot device for drama

and not to serve a strategic purpose

280

:

Laura: Stop.

281

:

Xhafer: the guns and the

282

:

Laura: the next episode.

283

:

Stop,

284

:

Xhafer: everything around it.

285

:

Well, no, no.

286

:

Just like from a tactics perspective,

Galactica defends itself against

287

:

small ships very, very well.

288

:

It blows the shit out of 'em all the time.

289

:

There's just this field of things that's

so dangerous that the raptors literally

290

:

can't, the vipers can't land on the

ship unless they stop firing shit.

291

:

Like that's how dangerous it is.

292

:

They have to stop to let them land.

293

:

They, and when they launch their launch

tubes are designed to get them away

294

:

from the ship as fast as possible.

295

:

Not to get them towards an

enemy, but to get them into the

296

:

safety out of the danger area.

297

:

That is the immediate surrounding

bit of the ship that is just

298

:

all bullets all the time.

299

:

Right.

300

:

Like.

301

:

What the fuck do fight pilots actually do?

302

:

I think it's a less essential job.

303

:

I say cut 'em all.

304

:

That's gonna be my platform when I

run for president of the 12 colonies.

305

:

Laura: Okay.

306

:

I have a bad feeling about the position of

president of the 12 colonies, so go ahead.

307

:

Xhafer: Oh, I don't want that job.

308

:

Laura: Oh yeah.

309

:

Mean neither.

310

:

Mean, neither.

311

:

Yeah.

312

:

I don't know why we're

doing each other's laundry

313

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

314

:

Laura: in, in these jobs.

315

:

That seems weird to me.

316

:

Xhafer: I mean, it seems like it's

one laundry delivery and not laundry.

317

:

Laura: Unclear.

318

:

'cause somebody does make a joke about

319

:

Xhafer: How she folds the undies?

320

:

Well, that's the thing is I don't think

anyone's actually doing any of that.

321

:

Like the only way you can do laundry

at this scale is to have the clothes

322

:

bag that everything is in, be washable.

323

:

Everyone puts their stuff in their labeled

bag, it all gets washed inside of said bag

324

:

and then gets thrown back at

them when it's been dried.

325

:

Laura: Yeah.

326

:

Xhafer: Or it's all like microwaved

or dry cleaned in some way.

327

:

Laura: Hear me out.

328

:

I think maybe laundry might

be a good job for Cali.

329

:

It's so safe, man.

330

:

Xhafer: I just feel like this is, like

someone has from each group has to go

331

:

get their laundry and you just have

someone run and grab it, who know?

332

:

And it's someone who works in that

department and knows everyone's name,

333

:

so they can just hand them their bag

and they can move on with their day.

334

:

Laura: Yeah, and I could see Celick baby

getting stuck in this more than others if

335

:

like her specialty is avionics and that's

not something that breaks all the time.

336

:

Xhafer: Yeah, if you're, if you're very

good at repairing things like we hear, she

337

:

is hypothetically, you'd be working less

because your shit would break less often.

338

:

Laura: Well, and, and if it's a

specialty area that doesn't break as

339

:

much as say, just like the general, I

don't know, fuel lines or something.

340

:

Fuel lines always be breaking,

but the avionics are little

341

:

fiddly things that, that don't

always get jammed up or whatever.

342

:

Yeah.

343

:

So that uh, has sea looks

pretty upsetting spaghetti to

344

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

345

:

Laura: this off.

346

:

But they were fueling up a raptor

347

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

348

:

Laura: in all of this,

349

:

Xhafer: For racetrack and bones.

350

:

Laura: Oh, okay.

351

:

I didn't, didn't recognize this person.

352

:

Xhafer: Racetrack.

353

:

She's been around.

354

:

Laura: the other one.

355

:

Xhafer: Oh, bones.

356

:

Yeah.

357

:

I think he's new.

358

:

Laura: Okay.

359

:

Their Raptor experience is a bang.

360

:

they're out of control engines on fire.

361

:

They eject, but, oh no.

362

:

It's headed straight to Colonial one.

363

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

364

:

It's like, you know, I always think

of Glee for this shot, but there's a

365

:

bunch of TV shows that do this shot

366

:

of the car accident.

367

:

Laura: Uhhuh

368

:

Xhafer: The, like, you have

like the, you're like the,

369

:

your side view of the driver.

370

:

Right.

371

:

And you see them looking ahead and you,

and we see the car barreling towards them,

372

:

but they don't one of those, it felt

like that only in space and outside.

373

:

Laura: yes.

374

:

'cause Rosalyn's just like signing her

papers and she looks up and there's like

375

:

a spinning thing headed to the window.

376

:

Yeah, it was very good.

377

:

Xhafer: But yeah, that's

the uh, we get that to theme

378

:

survivor count 41,402 births.

379

:

Laura: sure.

380

:

Okay.

381

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

382

:

We come back from theme to see the

damage being inspected as Rosalyn

383

:

note, she's gonna have to like,

sleep in the records room now.

384

:

And Adam is all like, I got

bed for you if you want it.

385

:

As he like says it in a, like, well,

all the beds on the ship are his,

386

:

you know, kind of a way, but realizes

what he actually said a moment later.

387

:

And it's just like, in a,

in a manner of speaking,

388

:

Laura: yep.

389

:

This is cute.

390

:

I love that.

391

:

The scene where like we've got all

the boxes, we're moving all the shit

392

:

because we're moving to the other

part of the ship and I was like,

393

:

this is the same part of the ship.

394

:

We just put a bunch of boxes in it to

make it look like it's a different place.

395

:

But it's the same thing,

396

:

Xhafer: Lest we forget.

397

:

We saw in the miniseries that Colonial

One has a massive cargo hold where

398

:

leaf fit not only like a raptor and

it looked minuscule, but also like

399

:

that giant EEMP weapon and stuff.

400

:

That that was a massive room

that we will never see again.

401

:

Laura: Yeah.

402

:

Yeah.

403

:

We're just gonna scoot everybody down,

you know, from first class to business,

404

:

to economy or whatever, you know?

405

:

Xhafer: Well, it's just like

we see through the, like the

406

:

windows on Colonial One, right?

407

:

Like it's like airplane wide, but there's

also this room that's just fucking

408

:

unbelievably large in the cargo hole.

409

:

That's some Dr.

410

:

Who, shit.

411

:

Laura: Yep.

412

:

It's, it's just under there.

413

:

It's under the thing, you

414

:

Xhafer: Yeah,

415

:

Laura: when they, when they had

to like, attach and drill in

416

:

because they were about to coup

Roslyn, they came in through there.

417

:

That's why it took so long.

418

:

Yeah.

419

:

Xhafer: yeah.

420

:

It's just the raw time to get through it.

421

:

Laura: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

422

:

Xhafer: They discussed the Bad Tillium

and the captain of that ship, Zeno Fenner.

423

:

That's a A Star Wars

name if I've heard one

424

:

Laura: That's a Star Wars name.

425

:

Yeah,

426

:

Xhafer: Wars name.

427

:

About how he's constantly sending them

emails that they ignore Rosalyn's.

428

:

Like every morning I come into 10

messages on teams from him that's

429

:

like, Hey, we're literally dying

over here for our space oil refiner.

430

:

Please don't ignore me.

431

:

And Adam is all like, I haven't

opened team since before the attack.

432

:

Laura: Yes.

433

:

Very much so.

434

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

435

:

Laura: I, I totally.

436

:

Empathize with thinner and

the tillium refiner's plight.

437

:

I really do.

438

:

But it is kind of funny to be mad

about overtime at the end of the world.

439

:

Xhafer: Are they still doing monies?

440

:

Laura: I mean, it kind of sounds like it.

441

:

I don't know.

442

:

They want benefits and, and of

course you don't have to have

443

:

money for benefits, right?

444

:

You can be getting something,

anything out of it.

445

:

And I think we do come up with

some compromises throughout

446

:

this episode, so that's good.

447

:

but yeah, it is just kind of silly when

you think about, they're like doing a

448

:

work stoppage and it's like, okay, but

if the silos catch us during a period

449

:

where we have no fuel, we're all dead.

450

:

So like, I don't know what to tell you.

451

:

Very, very interesting.

452

:

But uh, they do call him over for a chat.

453

:

Xhafer: yeah.

454

:

They have a little chat with them and

he's just like, please stop ignoring

455

:

me if I'm so mission critical.

456

:

Don't make it so that if I, only way

I have to talk to you is to like.

457

:

Make sure bad Tillium gets

out or we stop working.

458

:

That should not be the only time

we interact if I am that important.

459

:

Laura: Yeah.

460

:

Xhafer: And then he quotes the book

461

:

Laura: Oh, this is where I'm

starting to lose you, sir.

462

:

Xhafer: and Rosalyn flips like a light

switch rave and throws him in jail.

463

:

Laura: Yeah, yeah.

464

:

Um, generally very

against book burnings here

465

:

on the podcast.

466

:

But what I found out that this book

she's referring to is baltar's mind comp.

467

:

I am starting to see a gray area.

468

:

Yeah.

469

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

470

:

Rosalyn gives us a

little, the X pieces here.

471

:

Baltar has written a book

called My Triumphs, my Mistakes.

472

:

His lawyer has smuggled it out.

473

:

I want you to know that like as a gag

for a minute, because this, this episode

474

:

was airing when I was in college.

475

:

Me and a couple of friends would print

out this, the cover of this book, cut off

476

:

the corners and hide it in each other's

stuff so that you just randomly find them.

477

:

Laura: Yeah, that's kind of funny.

478

:

Yeah.

479

:

Yeah.

480

:

Xhafer: You'd be going to class,

you'd open up your book, and

481

:

all of a sudden, right there,

482

:

Laura: That's, that's pretty good.

483

:

Yeah.

484

:

I would have a good chuckle.

485

:

Yeah.

486

:

This is where I started

to get really worried.

487

:

I know that you've told me that I want

this trial, that I want this guy's trial,

488

:

Xhafer: Well,

489

:

you wanna watch it.

490

:

I don't know that you want it to happen.

491

:

Laura: I'm like, I'm sitting here

like, okay, this is clearly like

492

:

a, a reference to mein comp, right.

493

:

Xhafer: I mean.

494

:

It's a little mind comfy, but it's really

more of a like communist manifesto.

495

:

It's really more Marcy in its content.

496

:

Laura: The content is this, but I,

I'm, I'm thinking like with the title,

497

:

the way they've named it and like the

fact that he is like a dictator I was

498

:

like, yeah Hitler wrote that in prison

499

:

Right.

500

:

And came to power later.

501

:

So I'm like, I don't want that

to be what happens with Gais

502

:

Balter to be back in power.

503

:

Xhafer: Well,

504

:

Laura: oh.

505

:

So yeah, that's what makes me like.

506

:

Nervous and upset is like,

not again, please, please.

507

:

I Maybe it's just that that sort of like

person coming into power over and over

508

:

is getting a little played out in my

509

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

510

:

You know, when you've got someone who

comes into power and then they lose,

511

:

you know, like they're the president,

but then they're no longer the president

512

:

and then they're the president again.

513

:

That feels kind of weird.

514

:

Laura: Mm-hmm.

515

:

Yeah.

516

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

517

:

Laura: It sure does.

518

:

Yeah.

519

:

So he's, he done fucked up, Xeno.

520

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

521

:

At the two old dinner table, Callie

has also read the book and it's just

522

:

all like, Hey, ever notice how all the

main characters are from Rich Colonies?

523

:

And all the B plot characters are from

poor colonies and two old's all like, hey.

524

:

Dee's kind of a main character

and Callie's all like, yeah.

525

:

But her plot only relies on being

married to the Admiral Son and it

526

:

never once passes the Bechtel test.

527

:

Laura: So listener in pod time, Jair

and I are trying to get a bunch of

528

:

episodes together, and so we are doing

things back to back to back to back.

529

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

530

:

This is the second of three that

we're recording this weekend.

531

:

So I think this episode airs in

three or four weeks from now.

532

:

Laura: Yeah,

533

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

534

:

The world could be quite

different in three to four weeks.

535

:

Laura: Well, I'm, I'm trying to

give them some perspective that.

536

:

This episode for me because last

week for you listener was yesterday.

537

:

For us.

538

:

This episode Clangs Against

last episode really hard

539

:

when Daddy Adama saved their asses,

540

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

541

:

Laura: like Tyre fucked up and got

them in a bad situation by having

542

:

them work on stupid shit together.

543

:

And Daddy Adama and Lee

came up with the plan.

544

:

They saved their lives, got them

out of that airlock, and now Callie

545

:

is like mad at the ruling class and

it's like you trusted him explicitly.

546

:

Last episode you, even you, you

said those words, I trust Adama.

547

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

548

:

Laura: And you pick up a little

pamphlet by Baltar and flip

549

:

completely like a light switch rave.

550

:

I don't know.

551

:

I'm not saying that there's not good

points, but I was like, those two

552

:

storylines when you watch 'em one right

after the other didn't hit together.

553

:

Well,

554

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

555

:

Laura: I, it's another instance

where like, you might not notice

556

:

it when you're watching this in

real time, like a week apart,

557

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

558

:

Laura: but when you do it an evening

apart and they don't give us any sense

559

:

of like how much time is passing in

between episodes and I understand

560

:

why, but I was like, come on.

561

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

562

:

Laura: But yeah, Callie reminds

him like, Hey, remember the union?

563

:

Wasn't the union?

564

:

Great.

565

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

566

:

There's that union for a minute.

567

:

Papa Dama interrupts the working class

family dinner to notify him that he's

568

:

being sent to the tillium refiner

to get it going while Cali's all.

569

:

Yeah.

570

:

You can get arrested for

pissing off the president now.

571

:

Laura, can we make a promise right now?

572

:

Laura: Yeah.

573

:

Xhafer: Can we watch a happy show

that doesn't feel like it's being

574

:

Presciently geopolitical next time?

575

:

Laura: Yes, we can do that.

576

:

Xhafer: Okay.

577

:

I don't wanna do Star Trek

because I feel like everything,

578

:

well, let me put it this way.

579

:

If unless we find a way to make

Star Trek novel, if we have some

580

:

approach or something that adds

to that space, I'd be interested.

581

:

Laura: Yeah.

582

:

Xhafer: But I feel like it's a crowded,

well, not only is it a crowded space, but

583

:

it's also like a very well done space.

584

:

Laura: Crowded with people who

are much better than myself.

585

:

Xhafer: they're they're either funnier

than us or they understand cinema and like

586

:

art, visual art better than us, or they're

gonna be more, better research than us.

587

:

And the only thing we have that

would make them different is it's us.

588

:

Which I would like to think is nice, but

I don't think is culturally noteworthy,

589

:

Laura: Yeah.

590

:

Nope, not over here anyway.

591

:

Xhafer: uh, Either of us to be part.

592

:

It's not like we're fun, but I don't

think we'd add anything to that space.

593

:

So I don't wanna do Star Trek.

594

:

Laura: Yeah.

595

:

We'll come up with

596

:

Xhafer: we'll find something.

597

:

Yeah.

598

:

Laura: time.

599

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

600

:

Laura: Maybe you can suggest

it in the Discord listener.

601

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

602

:

We, we have not, as, as of this recording,

we have not had any serious discussion

603

:

on what we're gonna do once we're done.

604

:

I mean, we still have over a year of

this show between this and Caprica

605

:

and the spit off movies and stuff.

606

:

So there's a bit to go still,

but, yeah, I don't know.

607

:

I don't know what we'll watch next.

608

:

Laura: The world is our oyster, but

let's try to, let's try to influence

609

:

the universe positively this time.

610

:

Xhafer: please.

611

:

Please

612

:

Laura: Yeah,

613

:

Xhafer: Rosalyn goes to Baltar, tells

him that they've been intercepting the

614

:

pages of his book, and that she's the

only one who's read it and then generally

615

:

harasses him about how he sees himself.

616

:

Laura: of course.

617

:

He keeps it in his crotch, right.

618

:

Xhafer: Oh, yeah.

619

:

I mean, it's, they go for the full body

cavity as six PT, like, reaches into his

620

:

pants and hands the papers over for him.

621

:

Laura: Gross.

622

:

Xhafer: Yep.

623

:

Laura: Rosalyn does not

believe any of his backstory.

624

:

Right?

625

:

Xhafer: No, well, it's quite unbelievable

that he would be a like super

626

:

poor farm boy from this backwater.

627

:

Laura: Uhhuh?

628

:

Xhafer: Because he's a

scientific genius who's lived on

629

:

Caprica his whole life, right?

630

:

Laura: I think 'cause I

don't believe it either.

631

:

I was like, even if he was actually from

Aon, I think that he was not from the.

632

:

You know, working class of airon, how

abouts, 'cause every, every colony's

633

:

gonna be stratified in some ways, right?

634

:

There's gonna be the most

important dairy farmer or whatever.

635

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

636

:

Laura: But I don't believe any of it.

637

:

I think that when Rosalyn was dragging

him to the airlock and he sees somebody's

638

:

picture and said, this was my lab

assistant, which I also didn't believe,

639

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

640

:

You think

641

:

Laura: uh, he started forming an idea and

a plan and realized like, there's nothing,

642

:

nobody can check on anything I say.

643

:

Xhafer: Yeah,

644

:

Laura: I,

645

:

Xhafer: are no records.

646

:

Laura: there are no records.

647

:

I can make my backstory whatever I want,

whatever's convenient for me at this time.

648

:

And being, you know, hoity-toity,

smarty pants is not it now.

649

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

650

:

Laura: So I'm a b.

651

:

Bumble thought, Gais,

652

:

and uh, connect with the common people,

which he says something about that, like

653

:

he's just trying to connect with the

654

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

655

:

Laura: common man, and I,

656

:

Xhafer: I, I, I I have a thought on

that and I don't know if I'm remembering

657

:

something or having a thought on that.

658

:

S Because I might be, I think in my

head, and I don't know if I'm thinking

659

:

this because it's something that

happened or because it's something that

660

:

I thought that was his assistant, but

he's telling his assistant's story.

661

:

His, that guy was from Aon.

662

:

Laura: oh,

663

:

Xhafer: But I don't know if that,

that might be something that actually

664

:

happens, that might be a thing that

my brain is putting together right

665

:

now as a, like, possible theory.

666

:

Um, because I haven't seen, I mean,

I don't think I've watched these

667

:

episodes since shortly after they aired.

668

:

I did a rewatch before

season four dropped.

669

:

So it's been almost, you know,

it's like 18 years or something,

670

:

17 years since this aired.

671

:

So my memory's a little fuzzy,

especially 'cause that was college and

672

:

I was, I went to a party school.

673

:

So,

674

:

Laura: Well we haven't found

that out yet, but I, I could see

675

:

that coming and being a thing.

676

:

Xhafer: I just hope that's not a spoiler.

677

:

I just

678

:

don't, know.

679

:

I, I I honestly don't know.

680

:

Laura: Yeah.

681

:

Xhafer: I don't remember.

682

:

Laura: Because I don't

believe this for a second.

683

:

Xhafer: What's funny is by the time

this episode airs, people in spoiler

684

:

chat will tell me, but also we

will have watched far enough ahead.

685

:

By the time this is airs, we I'll know.

686

:

Laura: but yeah, we'll know.

687

:

Right?

688

:

I just, this made me angry 'cause

I was like, this is a thing that

689

:

happens in our politics all the time.

690

:

Xhafer: Oh yeah, yeah.

691

:

You know, I'm from rural Ohio, but I

grew up in the West Virginia Mountains.

692

:

Laura: Mm-hmm.

693

:

Xhafer: Yeah, but also this,

but also this, but also this.

694

:

Just make it up, dude.

695

:

Laura: Yep.

696

:

So very uncomfortable.

697

:

I was uncomfortable with this.

698

:

Xhafer: I was uncomfortable

most of this episode.

699

:

Laura: and it just gets

worse the whole time through.

700

:

Uh, But Tyrell heads over to the Tillium

refiner and he gets a pretty warm

701

:

reception because these people presumably

have heard about his union experience.

702

:

I was thinking about it and I, I'm

thinking that probably a lot of

703

:

these people were not on new caprica.

704

:

Maybe some of them, but the

tillium refiner had to have

705

:

escaped with the fleet.

706

:

Right.

707

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

708

:

Laura: So like it's maybe some of

the people we've brought in worked

709

:

in the union, but I don't think

these people are all union people.

710

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

711

:

They couldn't be.

712

:

Laura: Tyrell's union anyway,

previous life in, in the colonies.

713

:

Sure.

714

:

Xhafer: yeah, yeah.

715

:

I mean, yeah.

716

:

'cause even the, commander, the

assistant captain, whatever it is, on

717

:

a civilian ship, doesn't know Tyrell,

718

:

Laura: yeah, Cabot, I think was his

719

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

720

:

Cabot.

721

:

Yeah.

722

:

He doesn't know Tyrell, but also

we find out he was on New Caprica.

723

:

Laura: Oh yeah, he definitely was.

724

:

Yeah.

725

:

So there's gotta be a mix,

726

:

Xhafer: yeah, so,

727

:

Laura: Uhhuh, there's

not a lot of tillium.

728

:

They show us the big empty cargo hold

729

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

730

:

There's not

731

:

Laura: it's, yeah, we're

running outta sand.

732

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

733

:

Big problem.

734

:

This lack of sand.

735

:

Tier old tours, the Tillium freighter

and sees that they're missing all

736

:

of their, like, pressure seals to

be able to run any of the machinery.

737

:

Laura: Huh?

738

:

Xhafer: Guess they're on strike.

739

:

Laura: Yeah.

740

:

Yeah.

741

:

Dad.

742

:

Merle's not gonna like this one.

743

:

Xhafer: the chief tries to give them

some hope, but Rosalyn and Adama

744

:

won't hear it and they just take the

second in command and throw him in.

745

:

The Bri Tiro goes to visit them

late in the night and sees that

746

:

Cabot is having flashbacks to

silent imprisonment on new Caprica.

747

:

Laura: Yes.

748

:

This poor man is tearing

himself apart in the Bri.

749

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

750

:

Tiro talks to them gets them

to tell him where the seals

751

:

are and then work can resume.

752

:

Laura: Yeah, I mean, Tyrell, Tyrell

tries, like, he says, you know, these

753

:

are slavery conditions we're under.

754

:

And Rosalyn reminds him like,

everyone's under slavery conditions.

755

:

Like the people in the algae refiner,

they're doing the same thing.

756

:

Like, none of us have a choice here.

757

:

We're, we're all stuck.

758

:

but tyre's saying like,

Hey, it's not safe.

759

:

Like we, we could do something for them.

760

:

Xhafer: Yeah,

761

:

Laura: But he, he gets

them to cave instead.

762

:

And it isn't really even him, he just

happened to show up at the right place

763

:

during the PTSD breakdown, like, But

then as he's getting the seals back

764

:

in operation, he starts to notice just

how many children are on the ship.

765

:

Xhafer: yeah.

766

:

There's some kids, kids like that

think they give us this, this

767

:

kid, he's like, how old are you?

768

:

He is like 12, almost.

769

:

Laura: Yep.

770

:

Xhafer: Yikes.

771

:

Laura: So he's back in Rosalyn's office

to beg her to think of the children.

772

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

773

:

It's like you're kind of

imposing a cast system here.

774

:

Laura: Yeah.

775

:

Like you are not trying

to, but it's happening

776

:

because she's like, well,

these children were just there.

777

:

They're just learning their parents' jobs.

778

:

And he's like, yeah, that's,

that's a caste system.

779

:

Xhafer: yeah, it is bad news.

780

:

the answer refiner, hunger games,

anyone who could work there might

781

:

get drafted in a lottery to go

work on the Tillium refiner,

782

:

and we immediately see a, like, I think

we're supposed to think he's like 17.

783

:

Laura: yes.

784

:

'cause he was saving up for college.

785

:

Xhafer: He was saving up for college,

but he would've been saving up for

786

:

college like two or three years

ago based off the time of the

787

:

attacks and everything and how much

788

:

Laura: Oh, good point.

789

:

Yeah.

790

:

Well, maybe he's 19.

791

:

I don't know.

792

:

Boys, boys mature at a

different rate, whatever.

793

:

I don't know.

794

:

Xhafer: he feels young.

795

:

Laura: Well,

796

:

Xhafer: He interned as a,

at a farm over a summer.

797

:

And so he's a farmer now?

798

:

Laura: Yeah.

799

:

He was just making some college money.

800

:

Um, to make sure I understand the

lottery system, it sounds like

801

:

it's not like you are drawn and

you are a tillium refiner now.

802

:

It's like you are working

shifts there, so like.

803

:

I don't know how the shift system set

up, but maybe you go for four weeks,

804

:

you're come back, do whatever else.

805

:

I don't know.

806

:

But Yeah, we're supposed to feel really

bad about this kid who has a summer

807

:

of farming experience being pulled

as a farmer to go to the refinery.

808

:

Do you feel bad about it?

809

:

Xhafer: I mean, uh.

810

:

I don't feel great about it,

but also like everyone, like the

811

:

situation is pretty dire, right?

812

:

Like if people don't work this ship,

like everyone's, like you need it to run,

813

:

to be able to continue jumping, to make

for the survival of the species, right?

814

:

That is the literal stakes.

815

:

Adama says it later in the episode.

816

:

It's all like one fuck up.

817

:

All of humanity is dead.

818

:

That's on us.

819

:

Like we have to, we have to

have, those are the stakes.

820

:

They literally cannot be higher.

821

:

Laura: right.

822

:

Xhafer: And so with that in mind,

you have to like really question.

823

:

How much the ends can justify

the means, which is what this

824

:

episode is as hard about.

825

:

It's why I like this episode.

826

:

It's one of my favorite of the, this type

of sci-fi show in particular, the like

827

:

Armageddon style TV show is the, how much

of our humanity are we willing to give up

828

:

to ensure that we keep humanity around?

829

:

Laura: Yeah.

830

:

Xhafer: Like at what point do

we stop being a society and the

831

:

thing that we're trying to save is

destroyed by our own actions instead

832

:

of the thing that's pressing on us.

833

:

Like that is what this is.

834

:

This is a core type of story in these

settings and I'm always here for it.

835

:

I think it's a really interesting question

and one of the things that sci-fi as a

836

:

genre is particularly good at telling.

837

:

Laura: Yeah.

838

:

They do also specifically tell us

that these recruits that they're

839

:

pulling are from Dogville, so

they're from the Galactica refugees.

840

:

I guess we're, we're doing

it, we're keeping Dogville.

841

:

Uh, And I'm like, well, if you're not

putting them to use on Galactica, it seems

842

:

like people should be, do like as many

people as possible who can do a, something

843

:

should be doing a something, right?

844

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

845

:

And it's like the people who are

refugees on Galactica are presumably

846

:

not able to meaningfully contribute

to the operations of Galactica.

847

:

So having them work a job somewhere

that helps the fleet survive.

848

:

Like, it's not like everyone's just

getting time off on the tillium

849

:

freighter and it's all happy go lucky.

850

:

Like they are severely understaffed

and that is management's problem.

851

:

And they, you, you need something,

852

:

Laura: Mm-hmm.

853

:

Xhafer: those people shouldn't have to

work every single day of their lives.

854

:

Laura: Right.

855

:

Xhafer: And if you need more

people, you need more people.

856

:

And that's how humanity survives.

857

:

I'm still uncomfortable with

it at that level of stakes.

858

:

'Cause it is low key.

859

:

Not even like, they don't make jokes

about it or like try to hide it.

860

:

It's slavery in a very meaningful way.

861

:

You know, that's what they're trying to

say and I should be uncomfortable with it.

862

:

That's the point.

863

:

Laura: Yeah.

864

:

Xhafer: What makes it

an interesting story?

865

:

Laura: Yeah.

866

:

I was like, I don't know how I'm

supposed to feel for this boy.

867

:

I think I, I think I'm supposed to

feel bad, but it's like, um, I mean,

868

:

college is not happening anymore, right?

869

:

For your generation, there's no

more college, so you need to find

870

:

somewhere to be a contributor,

871

:

Xhafer: Now the only

thing to me that I think.

872

:

Would it be a slight tweak that maybe

would've made this a little bit more

873

:

interesting is for when he's arguing with

Tyrell to be all like, I'm from Caprica.

874

:

This isn't what I should be doing.

875

:

Laura: Yeah.

876

:

That could have put some fuel under

the, the Baltar fire, unfortunately.

877

:

Xhafer: also it takes away the

impact of the thing that happens

878

:

to him in like 10 minutes.

879

:

Laura: Yeah,

880

:

Xhafer: So I, I understand why but

you know, I'm just, I see a fire, I'm

881

:

gonna blow on it, stoke that thing.

882

:

Laura: Yeah.

883

:

Xhafer: Tyrell finds a copy of Baltar's

pamphlet and begins thumbing through

884

:

it, and he thinks it's bullshit.

885

:

So he goes to tell Gais it's bullshit.

886

:

Laura: Yeah.

887

:

Um,

888

:

Xhafer: How is he able to do?

889

:

Laura: right.

890

:

Why is he able to visit Baltar?

891

:

Xhafer: The Tillium freighter guys at

least makes sense because he might need

892

:

to like ask them for their password

for their console or something.

893

:

Like there's reasons he would need

to go there that would not involve

894

:

getting like clearance from Adama,

895

:

like quickly.

896

:

You know, he's trusted like he, he might

need something from them that is just he,

897

:

to go through the bureaucracy would be

too much middle management, but Baltar,

898

:

who the fuck has just open visiting

rights for Baltar and why is it the chief?

899

:

That makes no sense to me.

900

:

Laura: No.

901

:

Yeah.

902

:

This conversation is weird and the

description you read to me last

903

:

week was like.

904

:

It made it feel like this was gonna

be a bigger deal than it actually was.

905

:

Like, I don't know that I felt like

this conversation was that big a deal.

906

:

We get to, we get to watch

some classic gaas bullshit,

907

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

908

:

Laura: but I don't think Tyrell is

that convinced by anything Ballar says,

909

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

910

:

Laura: do you?

911

:

Xhafer: No.

912

:

I mean,

913

:

Laura: Okay.

914

:

I was like, is there something I missed?

915

:

Did I

916

:

Xhafer: No, no.

917

:

He went in there to say bullshit

and baltar's all like, oh,

918

:

Baltar can change his accent.

919

:

That must be a sign of

authenticity from the man.

920

:

Right?

921

:

Right.

922

:

Laura: I don't think so.

923

:

Yeah, I don't know.

924

:

I wasn't convinced.

925

:

Even, even if he's is from

Aon, he's not from Aon.

926

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

927

:

Laura: Baltar tries to like, oh,

well the aristocracy just wants you

928

:

to think that democracy works so

that you just believe and trust 'em.

929

:

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

930

:

Laura: And I'm sitting there like, but,

931

:

but these words are coming out

of your mouth is the problem.

932

:

Like, you are telling

me exactly what you do.

933

:

Every accusation is a confession.

934

:

I've heard that before.

935

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

936

:

Laura: I feel like that's baltar.

937

:

Every accusation is a confession.

938

:

Xhafer: That's a fair statement for him.

939

:

Laura: Oh, and the, the ending, the button

on this little scene is he asks Tiro if he

940

:

thinks this fleet will ever be commanded

by someone whose name is not Adama.

941

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

942

:

Laura: And I was like, well, guys,

that kind of, the, the timeline you're

943

:

setting up in that question is that

we're gonna be on the run forever.

944

:

Like hopefully this fleet is never

commanded by someone else who's not named

945

:

a dama because we got somewhere safe.

946

:

Xhafer: Yeah, you made it to Earth, right?

947

:

I mean, even if the old man dies

before you get there, right?

948

:

Like in hypothetical land, you

know, they, they're on the run

949

:

for another 40 years or something.

950

:

Lee is the obvious successor.

951

:

Laura: Yeah, because

952

:

Xhafer: who?

953

:

Yeah.

954

:

Well, Ty will, Ty would

955

:

Laura: And bad at it.

956

:

He's bad at it.

957

:

Xhafer: kick it before,

958

:

right?

959

:

Um, Ty might like if, if uh, you

know, if he gets boomed again

960

:

or something like maybe Ty.

961

:

But realistically, Lee probably

next in line, even though Helo is

962

:

technically, and you got Captain Kelly.

963

:

We can't forget Captain Kelly.

964

:

Laura: Oh yeah.

965

:

Essential.

966

:

Xhafer: Um, yeah, essential

Captain Kelly third in command.

967

:

but it's just like.

968

:

Yeah, so like that's the two, right?

969

:

Um, I mean he's got the most

leading a Battlestar experience

970

:

in the fleet outside of his

971

:

dad.

972

:

Laura: Uhhuh.

973

:

Xhafer: And he got that because of some

of the nepotism, like let's not pretend.

974

:

Laura: Right, but still like

that's what we got left, right?

975

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

976

:

And so it's just like, okay, so like

do you take that further like you're

977

:

proposing and it's all like, okay,

so Lee and Dee's hypothetical kid

978

:

Laura: Yeah.

979

:

Xhafer: and it's just like,

it's such a dark question,

980

:

Laura: Yeah.

981

:

Xhafer: but you're right, it is.

982

:

It's very self-serving.

983

:

'cause it's just like, of course

it's gonna be Adam dama and Lee would

984

:

probably make sense a second, I think.

985

:

I don't think anyone who has

enough knowledge of the officers

986

:

on board would question Lee being

in command after his dad dies.

987

:

Based off of his experience at this point,

988

:

um, which he got because of

nepotism, but he still got,

989

:

Laura: yeah.

990

:

And I mean, he did a pretty

good job getting him outta there

991

:

with the whole Pegasus thing.

992

:

So like he's No, no slouch

when it comes down to that.

993

:

Xhafer: Yeah.

994

:

And it's just like, what, what,

what are you trying to actually say?

995

:

And it's just, the guy is bullshit.

996

:

It's a I'm gonna make you think

about something that has an obvious

997

:

answer so that I sound smart.

998

:

Yep,

999

:

Laura: I'm just asking questions,

:

00:47:02,663 --> 00:47:03,623

Xhafer: exactly.

:

00:47:03,908 --> 00:47:06,068

Laura: dumb questions,

but I'm asking questions.

:

00:47:06,323 --> 00:47:08,256

Xhafer: Yeah, just want

you to think about it.

:

00:47:08,920 --> 00:47:09,400

Over on the

:

00:47:09,400 --> 00:47:10,180

refinery.

:

00:47:10,240 --> 00:47:10,510

Yeah.

:

00:47:10,510 --> 00:47:13,450

The chief is there to

help with maintenance.

:

00:47:13,450 --> 00:47:14,290

There's a jam.

:

00:47:15,340 --> 00:47:19,720

Someone's wooden shoe is in the

gears and Tiro can't get it.

:

00:47:20,290 --> 00:47:25,870

But that 17-year-old jumps under, grabs

it, and gets seriously injured for it.

:

00:47:26,725 --> 00:47:27,295

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:47:27,370 --> 00:47:28,930

Xhafer: like goes through his arm.

:

00:47:29,080 --> 00:47:31,180

It looks gnarly.

:

00:47:32,365 --> 00:47:32,875

Laura: Gnarly.

:

00:47:32,875 --> 00:47:34,165

Good thing Cix is here.

:

00:47:34,195 --> 00:47:36,175

'cause we know cix is medic training.

:

00:47:36,640 --> 00:47:37,000

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:47:38,065 --> 00:47:38,935

Laura: That's the other thing.

:

00:47:39,865 --> 00:47:43,915

The doc coddle should be like train

cross training the hell out people.

:

00:47:43,945 --> 00:47:44,365

Right?

:

00:47:44,685 --> 00:47:44,975

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:47:45,275 --> 00:47:47,200

We, you should have, it's been years.

:

00:47:47,260 --> 00:47:48,670

You should have a new doctor by now.

:

00:47:49,105 --> 00:47:49,465

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:47:49,885 --> 00:47:51,925

We should be cross training

the hell outta people.

:

00:47:52,441 --> 00:47:52,681

Oh.

:

00:47:52,681 --> 00:47:54,301

And we don't find that

out in this episode.

:

00:47:54,301 --> 00:47:56,851

So I'll, I'll save that

comment for the next episode.

:

00:47:56,851 --> 00:48:00,241

But, cross training the hell

out and every ship, like the

:

00:48:00,241 --> 00:48:02,671

refiner and the algae processor.

:

00:48:02,701 --> 00:48:04,411

I assume there's

dangerous stuff there too.

:

00:48:04,651 --> 00:48:10,261

Should have like a doctor, a

very good nurse practitioner,

:

00:48:10,741 --> 00:48:12,871

a medic, something really good.

:

00:48:13,666 --> 00:48:13,726

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:48:14,266 --> 00:48:17,506

You don't want coddle to have to

fly over anytime someone gets hurt.

:

00:48:18,361 --> 00:48:18,661

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:48:19,136 --> 00:48:19,736

For reals.

:

00:48:20,247 --> 00:48:23,427

Xhafer: Tyro immediately turns off

the refiner and calls for a strike.

:

00:48:24,018 --> 00:48:24,288

Laura: Yep.

:

00:48:25,038 --> 00:48:25,968

A union man.

:

00:48:26,298 --> 00:48:26,568

Xhafer: Yep.

:

00:48:27,378 --> 00:48:29,418

The pilots come down and see the knuckle.

:

00:48:29,418 --> 00:48:34,908

Dragers not doing shit because they're

striking too vital missions only, which

:

00:48:34,913 --> 00:48:37,398

does extend to like the patrol, right.

:

00:48:37,878 --> 00:48:39,288

They say, Hey, we launched the patrol.

:

00:48:39,288 --> 00:48:42,138

Like we're, we're still doing

anything that's imp important

:

00:48:42,138 --> 00:48:43,668

to ship security vital missions.

:

00:48:44,028 --> 00:48:45,048

We never stop that.

:

00:48:45,648 --> 00:48:47,118

We're just not letting the pilots go.

:

00:48:47,118 --> 00:48:48,018

Joy riding.

:

00:48:49,141 --> 00:48:51,691

Laura: I don't know why

this annoys me so much,

:

00:48:53,701 --> 00:48:55,051

but I think I do.

:

00:48:55,171 --> 00:48:56,251

I think it's Callie.

:

00:48:56,311 --> 00:48:59,491

I think it's the fact that

Callie's like the, the go-between,

:

00:49:00,331 --> 00:49:05,551

and she's the reason that now all

the deckhands are striking too.

:

00:49:06,526 --> 00:49:06,816

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:49:06,896 --> 00:49:09,749

Laura: Uh, That, that

bugged me a little bit.

:

00:49:11,162 --> 00:49:13,502

But yeah, let's just arrest for everybody.

:

00:49:13,502 --> 00:49:13,832

Xhafer: yeah.

:

00:49:13,952 --> 00:49:14,732

Tyrell's in the brick.

:

00:49:15,612 --> 00:49:19,302

The dad roll goes to see him and

he's like, this isn't a strike.

:

00:49:19,392 --> 00:49:20,112

It's a mutiny.

:

00:49:20,202 --> 00:49:21,192

We're calling it a mutiny.

:

00:49:21,222 --> 00:49:23,142

And it's a mutiny 'cause

it's a mutiny now.

:

00:49:23,442 --> 00:49:24,702

And you know what we do to muti ears?

:

00:49:25,092 --> 00:49:25,752

We fucking shoot 'em.

:

00:49:26,429 --> 00:49:28,409

Laura: Is it because it's his deckhands?

:

00:49:28,499 --> 00:49:29,399

That it's a mutiny?

:

00:49:29,579 --> 00:49:31,024

I, I mean that.

:

00:49:31,049 --> 00:49:31,439

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:49:31,469 --> 00:49:35,399

Because they're, they're,

they're people who are military

:

00:49:35,399 --> 00:49:36,809

personnel refusing orders.

:

00:49:37,664 --> 00:49:41,204

Laura: I think that if, if Callie

hadn't done this, if Tyre hadn't

:

00:49:41,294 --> 00:49:44,804

passed this onto her, it's still

a strike in Adama's mind, right?

:

00:49:45,359 --> 00:49:45,659

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:49:45,779 --> 00:49:46,379

Probably.

:

00:49:46,966 --> 00:49:52,066

Laura: Tyrell's just like, no, you know,

I just want us to not leave people behind.

:

00:49:52,606 --> 00:49:55,996

Uh, but naval ship isn't a

democracy is the problem.

:

00:49:57,001 --> 00:49:57,841

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:49:58,785 --> 00:49:59,625

There's a moment.

:

00:50:00,105 --> 00:50:03,615

Anterial does not acquiesce

immediately, so Adama orders Callie

:

00:50:03,615 --> 00:50:06,675

to be captured, brought down to

the repair bay for execution.

:

00:50:07,086 --> 00:50:07,506

Laura: Yep.

:

00:50:08,151 --> 00:50:09,291

Xhafer: She's like, she's the ringleader.

:

00:50:09,651 --> 00:50:10,761

She's gonna go first.

:

00:50:11,556 --> 00:50:13,056

Laura: She is the ringleader on this ship.

:

00:50:13,116 --> 00:50:13,506

Yeah.

:

00:50:14,190 --> 00:50:17,640

Tyrell right before this had asked to

talk to Rosalyn, and that's, that's

:

00:50:17,640 --> 00:50:19,620

sort of a key point that comes back.

:

00:50:20,610 --> 00:50:21,090

Not

:

00:50:21,190 --> 00:50:21,480

Xhafer: Yeah,

:

00:50:21,810 --> 00:50:27,203

Laura: Uh, So Adama reminds

him of the thing that, I don't

:

00:50:27,203 --> 00:50:28,673

know, it happened in season one.

:

00:50:28,673 --> 00:50:33,353

I feel like we heard the same speech

that like, if people on this ship

:

00:50:33,353 --> 00:50:37,433

don't do what they're told, even if

they don't like it, we may all die.

:

00:50:38,153 --> 00:50:43,583

Like there may be for every person on

this ship a moment where the thing that

:

00:50:43,583 --> 00:50:46,163

will save us is something they don't like.

:

00:50:46,253 --> 00:50:49,163

And so if they don't do it, everyone dies.

:

00:50:50,153 --> 00:50:50,963

I can't have this.

:

00:50:51,703 --> 00:50:54,823

Xhafer: If, if someone doesn't follow

an order on this ship, this ship

:

00:50:54,823 --> 00:50:56,683

goes down, this ship could go down.

:

00:50:56,683 --> 00:50:59,383

And if this ship goes down,

humanity's chances go down with it.

:

00:50:59,923 --> 00:51:02,353

Laura: And so does the

survival of your son.

:

00:51:02,563 --> 00:51:06,523

Your son specific salient

to you, will not survive.

:

00:51:06,733 --> 00:51:08,533

And that's where Teola cracks.

:

00:51:09,369 --> 00:51:12,609

Xhafer: Tiro is just like,

okay I guess I give up.

:

00:51:13,779 --> 00:51:15,309

We'll call off this,

:

00:51:16,164 --> 00:51:16,494

Laura: Yeah,

:

00:51:17,589 --> 00:51:19,599

Xhafer: Um, and then we cut over.

:

00:51:19,599 --> 00:51:20,139

There's a little bit.

:

00:51:20,139 --> 00:51:24,669

He calls, talks to Callie, says that they

won because that's what she needs to hear.

:

00:51:25,044 --> 00:51:25,374

Laura: yeah,

:

00:51:26,379 --> 00:51:28,899

Xhafer: And then goes and

meets with the president.

:

00:51:29,169 --> 00:51:32,259

'cause if Dom had already set that up,

it was all like, you're free to go.

:

00:51:32,319 --> 00:51:33,489

The president's waiting for you.

:

00:51:34,194 --> 00:51:34,404

Laura: yeah.

:

00:51:34,404 --> 00:51:35,724

He's like, you wanted to talk to her.

:

00:51:35,754 --> 00:51:37,374

You just said that you wanna talk to her.

:

00:51:37,659 --> 00:51:37,899

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:51:38,529 --> 00:51:39,309

Go, go talk to her.

:

00:51:39,519 --> 00:51:39,669

Yeah.

:

00:51:39,774 --> 00:51:43,434

Laura: so he's like, I, I

see he's drawing a line here.

:

00:51:43,434 --> 00:51:47,874

He's like, I don't think you're

wrong necessarily about these people

:

00:51:47,874 --> 00:51:53,094

needing a better life, but you

cannot bring that shit on my ship.

:

00:51:53,419 --> 00:51:53,709

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:51:54,204 --> 00:51:55,224

That stays off.

:

00:51:55,854 --> 00:51:56,064

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:51:56,459 --> 00:52:02,489

Xhafer: And then Tyro and Rosalyn have

some labor negotiations as Rosalyn

:

00:52:02,489 --> 00:52:08,829

reminds us that a fracturing ourselves

is how we lose to ourselves without

:

00:52:08,829 --> 00:52:10,509

the silence needing to interfere.

:

00:52:11,082 --> 00:52:11,412

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:52:12,036 --> 00:52:15,976

she's ready to negotiate in good faith.

:

00:52:16,071 --> 00:52:16,491

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

:

00:52:17,104 --> 00:52:20,704

Laura: Tyrell asks for the

people on Colonial one to come

:

00:52:20,704 --> 00:52:22,624

do some service on dirty ships.

:

00:52:22,774 --> 00:52:23,254

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:52:23,434 --> 00:52:26,764

Everyone fucking, if you're

on a ship that's non-essential

:

00:52:26,764 --> 00:52:27,844

and you're just hanging out.

:

00:52:28,699 --> 00:52:31,219

You're just on fucking

Cloud nine or some shit.

:

00:52:31,249 --> 00:52:34,909

Just doing things and you're not

doing a service job to help the fleet.

:

00:52:35,629 --> 00:52:37,099

Got some bad news for you.

:

00:52:37,429 --> 00:52:38,959

Your free ride's over.

:

00:52:39,874 --> 00:52:40,264

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:52:40,474 --> 00:52:43,504

And I mean, she's like, yeah,

I think that's reasonable.

:

00:52:44,194 --> 00:52:44,914

Let's do it.

:

00:52:45,364 --> 00:52:46,679

And she wants him to continue.

:

00:52:47,434 --> 00:52:52,474

As a union man, she says, we need this,

or something else is gonna tear us apart

:

00:52:52,534 --> 00:52:54,244

and that something is gonna be our,

:

00:52:55,099 --> 00:52:55,309

Xhafer: Hmm.

:

00:52:55,609 --> 00:52:56,329

Quite possibly.

:

00:52:57,424 --> 00:53:01,204

Laura: So please continue representing

their interests and I will

:

00:53:02,164 --> 00:53:03,904

continue to do my best to listen

:

00:53:04,104 --> 00:53:04,524

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

:

00:53:05,134 --> 00:53:09,309

Laura: honestly, like this is the

reasonable approach from Rosalyn.

:

00:53:09,329 --> 00:53:12,544

I'm not sure why we didn't

have it earlier in the episode

:

00:53:12,964 --> 00:53:13,254

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:53:15,034 --> 00:53:18,692

Laura: because all of

this seems not that bad.

:

00:53:19,242 --> 00:53:19,662

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

:

00:53:20,072 --> 00:53:20,732

Laura: Not that bad.

:

00:53:21,512 --> 00:53:23,942

I don't know why nobody could

get here until this moment.

:

00:53:25,097 --> 00:53:28,247

Xhafer: Because they were too busy

ignoring that guy's team's messages.

:

00:53:29,282 --> 00:53:30,842

Laura: Well, sometimes okay.

:

00:53:30,902 --> 00:53:34,082

Maybe he's not super pleasant

and so his message was getting

:

00:53:34,082 --> 00:53:35,762

lost within his messenger.

:

00:53:36,137 --> 00:53:36,377

Xhafer: Mm.

:

00:53:36,557 --> 00:53:37,607

Entirely possible.

:

00:53:37,802 --> 00:53:39,092

Laura: happens to people sometimes.

:

00:53:39,092 --> 00:53:39,452

Yeah.

:

00:53:39,827 --> 00:53:41,297

Xhafer: We get a little

bit of a button on the app.

:

00:53:41,387 --> 00:53:43,457

Selix gets to be a pilot after all.

:

00:53:43,917 --> 00:53:44,877

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:53:45,597 --> 00:53:46,107

Okay.

:

00:53:46,347 --> 00:53:48,717

So question about this.

:

00:53:49,407 --> 00:53:50,457

It, it's very cute.

:

00:53:50,457 --> 00:53:53,457

You know, Starbucks comes and like

chews her out for being late to training

:

00:53:53,802 --> 00:53:54,162

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:53:54,342 --> 00:53:55,542

That she clearly didn't know about.

:

00:53:55,542 --> 00:53:55,902

Yeah.

:

00:53:56,412 --> 00:53:58,092

Like chiefs hold their

pins and everything.

:

00:53:58,092 --> 00:53:59,472

She doesn't have the proper uniform.

:

00:53:59,472 --> 00:54:00,012

All that stuff.

:

00:54:00,282 --> 00:54:00,632

Laura: Uhhuh.

:

00:54:00,807 --> 00:54:02,007

Yeah, it's very cute.

:

00:54:02,097 --> 00:54:03,897

I did enjoy this quite a lot.

:

00:54:04,243 --> 00:54:09,806

but she gets the pin and she's an

SSON now she's an officer and I'm

:

00:54:09,806 --> 00:54:15,446

sitting here going, wasn't awa an

SSON at the beginning of all this?

:

00:54:15,944 --> 00:54:16,304

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:54:17,279 --> 00:54:20,849

Laura: And then she was an officer.

:

00:54:20,969 --> 00:54:23,789

But people have reccon it in

their minds that she's a only

:

00:54:23,789 --> 00:54:25,499

an officer because of Lee Now.

:

00:54:25,974 --> 00:54:30,354

Xhafer: Um, I mean, she, I

think she's only an important

:

00:54:30,354 --> 00:54:33,684

officer, but like her promotion is

:

00:54:33,819 --> 00:54:38,109

Laura: But they're, they're attributing

her being an officer at all to Lee.

:

00:54:38,289 --> 00:54:42,519

And I was like, that's a shitty thing

that happens to women all the time.

:

00:54:43,224 --> 00:54:43,884

Xhafer: a hundred percent.

:

00:54:45,879 --> 00:54:48,789

Laura: Oh, how delightful

that You stuck that in there.

:

00:54:48,939 --> 00:54:49,599

Thank you.

:

00:54:49,779 --> 00:54:50,679

Writing room.

:

00:54:52,835 --> 00:54:53,435

Great.

:

00:54:53,585 --> 00:54:54,155

Great.

:

00:54:54,905 --> 00:54:55,595

So great.

:

00:54:57,846 --> 00:54:59,916

Xhafer: So yeah, that's the episode.

:

00:55:00,704 --> 00:55:01,004

Laura: Mm-hmm.

:

00:55:01,670 --> 00:55:02,570

Xhafer: How'd you feel about this one?

:

00:55:04,120 --> 00:55:04,240

Laura: Hmm.

:

00:55:05,760 --> 00:55:08,550

I like the questions it's asking.

:

00:55:09,930 --> 00:55:12,510

I like the hard things

it's making me think about.

:

00:55:14,130 --> 00:55:15,510

I do not like that.

:

00:55:15,510 --> 00:55:18,540

It seems to be setting up

Ballar to have a comeback.

:

00:55:21,795 --> 00:55:22,800

I do not want that.

:

00:55:23,370 --> 00:55:25,080

No more comebacks for these people,

:

00:55:25,590 --> 00:55:25,880

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:55:27,076 --> 00:55:28,156

Laura: but it is a good episode.

:

00:55:28,816 --> 00:55:29,236

Xhafer: Mm-hmm.

:

00:55:29,296 --> 00:55:29,566

Laura: a 10.

:

00:55:30,456 --> 00:55:30,746

Xhafer: Yeah.

:

00:55:31,051 --> 00:55:31,831

Solid 10 for me.

:

00:55:31,891 --> 00:55:32,551

Great episode.

:

00:55:33,221 --> 00:55:34,991

Like I said earlier, this

is like my favorite little

:

00:55:34,991 --> 00:55:36,731

sub-genre of sci-fi here for it.

:

00:55:37,211 --> 00:55:37,631

Loved it.

:

00:55:37,981 --> 00:55:38,271

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:55:38,941 --> 00:55:39,231

Yeah.

:

00:55:39,851 --> 00:55:44,051

Xhafer: Next up, Battlestar

Galactica, season three, episode 17.

:

00:55:44,771 --> 00:55:45,491

Maelstrom.

:

00:55:46,130 --> 00:55:48,655

Kira has dreams about

Leo, Ben and the Mandela.

:

00:55:48,655 --> 00:55:49,975

She painted on Caprica.

:

00:55:50,665 --> 00:55:53,725

She has a run in with a heavy

Raider, but when her ship's records

:

00:55:53,725 --> 00:55:57,805

disagree, the Adama's become

concerned with her mental stability.

:

00:55:58,840 --> 00:55:59,620

Laura: Oh boy.

:

00:56:00,318 --> 00:56:03,978

Xhafer: And we're recording it in like 30

minutes after we take a little break, see.

:

00:56:03,978 --> 00:56:04,428

So,

:

00:56:05,133 --> 00:56:05,988

Laura: They don't need to know that.

:

00:56:06,498 --> 00:56:07,338

Xhafer: whatever.

:

00:56:08,328 --> 00:56:11,349

We've never been uh, shy

about the way this podcast

:

00:56:11,664 --> 00:56:12,324

Laura: Yeah, it's true.

:

00:56:12,684 --> 00:56:15,894

We're just trying to make sure you

have your weekly content, everybody.

:

00:56:16,179 --> 00:56:19,869

Xhafer: We're trying to make sure

that we don't put out too much at

:

00:56:19,869 --> 00:56:23,019

once and can have a week where we

don't have to record sometimes.

:

00:56:23,394 --> 00:56:23,694

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:56:24,474 --> 00:56:24,774

Yep.

:

00:56:25,164 --> 00:56:27,474

Especially as the semester goes on.

:

00:56:27,849 --> 00:56:28,734

Xhafer: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

:

00:56:28,739 --> 00:56:30,639

It's gonna be busy, so

:

00:56:31,044 --> 00:56:31,344

Laura: Yep.

:

00:56:31,869 --> 00:56:35,600

Xhafer: better, better record 'em all

upfront and have the breathing room when

:

00:56:35,600 --> 00:56:38,552

we need it in our professional lives, but.

:

00:56:38,972 --> 00:56:44,042

You know, where I could use a little less

breathing room in my professional life.

:

00:56:44,897 --> 00:56:46,397

Laura: I wish I could make

:

00:56:47,012 --> 00:56:47,402

Xhafer: That

:

00:56:47,957 --> 00:56:48,767

Laura: audible.

:

00:56:49,562 --> 00:56:52,232

Xhafer: Uh, Jeremy

Siegel, thank you so much.

:

00:56:54,947 --> 00:56:55,787

Laura: Hell yeah.

:

00:56:57,242 --> 00:56:57,482

Xhafer: Thanks,

:

00:56:57,482 --> 00:56:58,442

for doing our theme music.

:

00:56:58,442 --> 00:56:59,852

We appreciate you so much.

:

00:56:59,882 --> 00:57:02,522

Uh, Jeremy Siegel, four two.bandcamp.com.

:

00:57:02,522 --> 00:57:07,112

Streaming services is nuclear jaguar,

and then like just a shit ton of bands.

:

00:57:07,292 --> 00:57:07,472

Good

:

00:57:07,532 --> 00:57:07,922

Laura: Yeah.

:

00:57:08,405 --> 00:57:09,125

So exciting.

:

00:57:09,605 --> 00:57:11,345

Late night losers, persons unknown

:

00:57:11,989 --> 00:57:12,529

uh,

:

00:57:12,619 --> 00:57:13,489

Xhafer: one with a c

:

00:57:13,909 --> 00:57:14,269

Laura: of stuff.

:

00:57:15,233 --> 00:57:18,773

And thanks to angry duck time machine

on Instagram for the podcast artwork.

:

00:57:19,403 --> 00:57:21,293

Xhafer: Aaron, sorry you had

to listen to five minutes of me

:

00:57:21,293 --> 00:57:25,643

tuning my guitar to make a drop

today, but you know, it happens.

:

00:57:26,008 --> 00:57:27,628

Uh, Thanks so much for

editing this podcast.

:

00:57:27,628 --> 00:57:28,318

We appreciate you.

:

00:57:29,188 --> 00:57:30,238

Laura: We do indeed.

:

00:57:30,328 --> 00:57:33,058

And hey listener, thanks for being here.

:

00:57:33,148 --> 00:57:38,418

Come join us in the discord and maybe

I'll send some reactions to some

:

00:57:38,418 --> 00:57:40,638

crazy shit that's about to happen.

:

00:57:43,938 --> 00:57:45,408

Xhafer: Yeah, spoiler chat's.

:

00:57:45,408 --> 00:57:46,968

Been waiting for this one,

:

00:57:49,293 --> 00:57:52,038

but that's next week, which is

when we'll see you Internet.

:

00:57:52,412 --> 00:57:53,192

Laura: Bay.
