Shownotes

What would the world be like if we still used vacuum tubes for everything?

Transcripts

Speaker:

Hi, this is Bill Sikkens, host of User

Friendly 2.0 Saturdays

2

:

here on The Answer

with this week's Tech Wednesday.

3

:

Here at User Friendly,

we spend most of our time looking at

4

:

new technology and the exciting things

that are up and coming.

5

:

But sometimes we do look at the retro

side of things and take a look back.

6

:

This week, we're going to be exploring

the idea of what would happen

7

:

if we had never progressed

beyond vacuum tubes.

8

:

So in other words,

if today everything was still manufactured

9

:

the way it was done in the 40s and 50s,

what would things look like now?

10

:

What do we have? Computers.

11

:

What do we have? Smartphones?

12

:

What do we have cell phones at all?

13

:

Would things be similar or very different?

14

:

But the internet exists in some way.

15

:

These are all good questions, and it's

going to be very interesting to find out

16

:

the different direction

that technology could have gone

17

:

if the microprocessor

had never been invented.

18

:

So this little invention

has changed a lot,

19

:

but let's see

what the world would look like otherwise.
