Shownotes

The primary focus of this podcast episode is the exploration of the significance of historical images in American football, particularly through the lens of Phil Boyd, the curator of NFLpastplayers.com. This site serves as a digital repository for photographs that celebrate not only iconic players but also lesser-known figures who have made meaningful contributions to the sport. Phil shares the genesis of his passion for preserving these visual memories, rooted in his childhood admiration for football and the players who embodied its spirit. He articulates a profound commitment to recognizing the efforts of all athletes, regardless of their fame, ensuring that their legacies endure. Throughout the conversation, we delve into the stories behind these images and the emotional resonance they hold for fans and players alike, underscoring the importance of remembering and honoring the past within the ever-evolving narrative of football history.

Speaker A:

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but what about hundreds of pictures of football games and players?

Speaker A:

What's that worth?

Speaker A:

Well, it's definitely worth looking at.

Speaker A:

And we have the host of a site that has some great images of NFL past players.

Speaker A:

The host of this site, Phil Boyd, joins us tonight, and he's going to tell us all about his great site and where these images came from and what his mission is.

Speaker A:

Phil's up in just a second to tell us all about it.

Speaker B:

This is the Pigskin Daily History Dispatch, a podcast that covers the anniversaries of American football events throughout history.

Speaker B:

Your host, Darrin Hayes, is podcasting from America's North Shore to bring you the memories of the gridiron one day at a time.

Speaker A:

Hello, my football friends.

Speaker A:

This is Darren Hayes of pigskindispatch.com welcome once again to the Pig Pen, your portal to positive football history.

Speaker A:

And welcome to another edition where we get to talk about, talk to a person that has a great passion for the game of football, in this case pro football, and the players that we watch every Sunday and have read about, and all through the ages of the NFL and some of the other professional leagues as well.

Speaker A:

His name is Phil Boyd, and he has a great website, which we'll talk about in a second.

Speaker A:

Phil Boyd, welcome to the Pig Pen.

Speaker B:

Thank you.

Speaker B:

Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker A:

Yeah, Phil, you know, I have run into you, like we talked about earlier on social media.

Speaker A:

You have some excellent posts with some great images of, of great football, which we're going to get into that in a little bit, in a second.

Speaker A:

But I guess, you know, what possessed you to, to have this passion to display these great images on, on your website and maybe you could tell us a little bit about your website.

Speaker B:

Well, I guess the passion comes from when I was younger.

Speaker B:

I, I loved reading about football.

Speaker B:

I loved reading about old football books.

Speaker B:

Alex Karras's book, Even Big Guys Cry, Paper lion with George Plimpton.

Speaker B:

I love, I love reading books like that.

Speaker B:

Steve Wright had a book called I'd Rather be Right.

Speaker B:

He played for the Giants.

Speaker B:

I think he played for, uh.

Speaker B:

Who else did he play?

Speaker B:

Packers.

Speaker B:

He played for the Packers.

Speaker B:

And, uh, he had a pretty, pretty.

Speaker B:

It was funny.

Speaker B:

It was a very funny book.

Speaker B:

But anyway, I just loved reading about the old football, old football guys, old NFL.

Speaker B:

I played a little bit of football in high school.

Speaker B:

You know, I would guess as like every young boy had fantasies and dreams of being in the NFL and, you know, and at the same time, you know, reading about These old guys and kind of just idolizing their, their toughness and their, their dedication and their.

Speaker B:

And their passion.

Speaker B:

Their passion for the game.

Speaker B:

I mean they weren't making million dooll contracts.

Speaker B:

They just played the game because they loved it.

Speaker B:

And I really really.

Speaker B:

That just appealed to me.

Speaker B:

That just appealed to me.

Speaker B:

And I guess that kind of of dovetailed later on with my.

Speaker B:

My interest for.

Speaker B:

For technology websites.

Speaker B:

I kind of kind of a geek at heart and with the.

Speaker B:

The technological end of the.

Speaker B:

Of Internet development and not that I'm an expert by any stretch of the imagination, it's a hobby for me.

Speaker B:

I enjoy doing it.

Speaker B:

I'm proud of myself when I pull it off and I make something good and people enjoy it and I just try and just put the two together and that's basically the where.

Speaker B:

Where it all stemmed from.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And I guess we are been reluctant so far to, to share what your website is.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

So folks, you know, as we're watching the video or listening to the podcast, they can pull up.

Speaker A:

So why don't you tell us where to find your site?

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker B:

The.

Speaker B:

The name of the website is NFL pastplayers.com.

Speaker B:

it took me a while to try and decide on a name.

Speaker B:

I had started off with a.

Speaker B:

A Saints a New Orleans Saints history side like we're talking before I was a.

Speaker B:

A Saints fan.

Speaker B:

Long story short, my wife wanted to get into computer graphics and she decided that I was going to get into the web develop.

Speaker B:

This was back in the early.

Speaker B:

About the early to mid-90s when the Internet was just starting to.

Speaker B:

To take off and I decided to make a New Orleans Saints history website mainly because I had a couple of books.

Speaker B:

I just.

Speaker B:

It just you know, had a bunch of pictures in them and I use that to kind of learn a little bit about the, the website development.

Speaker B:

And as just things went on I.

Speaker B:

I went in.

Speaker B:

I kind of went into the.

Speaker B:

The NFL the NFL.

Speaker B:

I found there was a whole lot bigger interest for NFL players instead of the Saints players.

Speaker B:

So although I did have a pretty big interest in Saints in old Saints history.

Speaker B:

But people are more interested a lot more in the.

Speaker B:

The NFL history.

Speaker B:

So I kind of made the decision to go into.

Speaker B:

That took a.

Speaker B:

Like I said, took a while to come up with a name because all the domain names had been taken.

Speaker B:

So that's what I came up and I regret because after I got it I started realizing there's a hope this.

Speaker B:

What about the American Football League?

Speaker B:

The afl, the a.

Speaker B:

The All American Football Conference?

Speaker B:

The, the World Football League?

Speaker B:

You Know, all these guys, you know, they, they deserve some recognition too.

Speaker B:

The point of my website is to bring up kind of like the memories, the memories that we have as fans.

Speaker B:

The.

Speaker B:

Nothing turns me on more when I, I put some pictures of a player that somebody.

Speaker B:

Not a big household name, okay.

Speaker B:

And somebody will look at that and say, oh, wow, I remember that guy.

Speaker B:

Yeah, he did this, this and this.

Speaker B:

You know, I feel like I'm giving that player his due, you know, no, he may not be a Hall of Fame caliber type player, but, but he put in time, he put in blood, sweat, effort to become who he was and to entertain us as the fans.

Speaker B:

And, and I enjoy giving him the recognition like that.

Speaker B:

Yeah, that's.

Speaker B:

I mean, that, that's what I, I enjoy.

Speaker B:

That's what I enjoy.

Speaker A:

But I can tell you firsthand as somebody that has discovered your site recently and you, Your mission is spot on because I find myself doing that daily now, just going in and going through, you know, even Alpha, you have them listed alphabetically and you have listed alphabetically.

Speaker A:

Is your, your main way of finding players.

Speaker A:

I'll go in, I'll go into like the seas, and I'll say, oh my gosh, I forgot about this guy.

Speaker A:

I remember him like just exactly what you.

Speaker B:

That's what I like to do.

Speaker B:

I like it when somebody comes, says, oh, yeah, you know, you know, yeah, when I was a kid.

Speaker B:

A kid, yeah.

Speaker B:

I used to watch him and I remember on this play, he did this or he did that.

Speaker B:

I.

Speaker B:

That's what I'm trying.

Speaker B:

That's what I'm trying to do.

Speaker B:

That's what I'm trying to.

Speaker B:

I said, I've got some players.

Speaker B:

I actually have a lot of family members that will contact me and say, hey, you know, can you put up a pick?

Speaker B:

My dad played, my uncle played, matter of fact.

Speaker A:

How cool.

Speaker B:

Johnny Brewer.

Speaker B:

I don't know if, you know, I put up a little gallery for Johnny Brewer, the tight end slash linebacker for the Browns, and he went and played for the Saints, but his nephew just recently contacted me and said, hey, could you, you know, put up a, A gallery?

Speaker B:

Which I'm, I'm more than.

Speaker B:

I love doing that a lot.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker B:

People may not believe this, but I still don't know.

Speaker B:

I'm still learning.

Speaker B:

I'm learning a whole lot about these guys and I just find some of their stories so fascinating.

Speaker B:

I mean, a lot of these guys, it's just.

Speaker B:

I just love reading about them and, you know, learning about them.

Speaker B:

And yeah, I get such the biggest kick when I get a player that I'm not familiar with and I start reading up and researching him and start putting all this information on the, on the site.

Speaker B:

I just, I get a big kick out of that.

Speaker A:

Yeah, people that are looking at your website get a big kick out of it too.

Speaker B:

I can, I'm glad, I'm glad.

Speaker A:

And let me make an editorial note.

Speaker A:

So folks, if you're in your car or you can't get to the website right away, don't worry, you don't have to.

Speaker A:

You can't write something down.

Speaker A:

We're going to put it in the show notes and the podcast notes of the podcast or the YouTube video.

Speaker A:

And on pigskindispatch.com for the article that corresponds, we'll get you links right to Phil's site to check out these great images.

Speaker A:

And these are tremendous and you think you will not be disappointed and you'll spend days in there like, like I do every day.

Speaker A:

So that's a great thing.

Speaker A:

So who are some of your.

Speaker A:

Okay, besides the Saints players, who are some of your first players that you're putting images up?

Speaker B:

The first players, believe it or not, are all the guys whose names start with A.

Speaker B:

Okay, what, what happened when I decided.

Speaker B:

And the deciding factor was there was another website called Sports Addicts Collectibles.

Speaker B:

The guy, he makes the, the, the, the, the figures.

Speaker B:

The figure.

Speaker B:

And he recreates plays and players from these figures.

Speaker B:

I think he's even got a 3D printer now, so he can, he can do some pretty cool stuff.

Speaker B:

Anyway, he had, he kind of was doing this a little bit.

Speaker B:

He just would just put up a bunch of pictures.

Speaker B:

People would send him pictures and he would put them on this, put them on his psych.

Speaker B:

And you again, you would just go through the, the Alphabet and they would just all, you know, throw up there.

Speaker B:

s, early:

Speaker B:

So it's really not a whole lot of good looking things about it.

Speaker B:

You know, that's just the way the websites were.

Speaker B:

And I would send in pictures of the Saints players.

Speaker B:

And I remember one of the last times I did it, I sent him some pictures of some Saints players and he, he emailed me back.

Speaker B:

He said, he said, it's too much trouble.

Speaker B:

I'm not doing anymore.

Speaker B:

He said, I'm just, I'm not adding anything to it.

Speaker B:

He said, I'm just, it's gonna sit up there.

Speaker B:

So I figured, what the heck?

Speaker B:

I shot him back an email.

Speaker B:

I said, hey, do you mind if I take these pictures and, and I'm gonna do something with him.

Speaker B:

And he was more than happy.

Speaker B:

He was more than happy to let me do them.

Speaker B:

And I started with the A's.

Speaker B:

I just took all the players with A.

Speaker B:

That's why if you go to my website, there's so many more players with A's, and a lot of them probably aren't very relevant there.

Speaker B:

, he's probably later on like:

Speaker B:

You know, he's not as notable some of the others.

Speaker B:

So I did that for a while and then I started getting magazines.

Speaker B:

I had a whole bunch of old game pro.

Speaker B:

The.

Speaker B:

The game programs from, from old Saints games.

Speaker B:

And I grabbed a bunch of those and I would, I just take it.

Speaker B:

I would just start at the, at the beginning, scan a picture, put it on.

Speaker B:

Get.

Speaker B:

Get.

Speaker B:

Scan a picture.

Speaker B:

But if I didn't have a gallery for the player, I'd make a gallery for the player.

Speaker B:

And eventually people started.

Speaker B:

You know, I remember Ron McDowell, Ron McDowell's daughter Ema, she was one of the first, you know, relatives of professional players.

Speaker B:

And she wrote.

Speaker B:

And Ron McDowell had that, that incredible career.

Speaker B:

I mean, with 18, 19 years.

Speaker B:

He, I mean, he's there forever.

Speaker B:

I mean.

Speaker B:

And she sent me a whole bunch of stuff.

Speaker B:

Darren Talbert, the old, the guy that played for the Redskins, I think he played for the Rams too.

Speaker B:

He was another one.

Speaker B:

His kids sent me a bunch of pictures.

Speaker B:

They were one of the original ones to send me a bunch of pictures.

Speaker B:

And I, I put a bunch of the pic, their pictures up there.

Speaker B:

Uh, so those were some of the first really notable players.

Speaker B:

Uh, Herb Adderley, his name began with an A.

Speaker B:

Danny Abramowicz, I had a bunch of pictures of him from the Saints already.

Speaker B:

And he had a bunch of pictures because it was an A name.

Speaker B:

So, so I started, you know, with, with that and then eventually I just started adding players as, as they came to mind or as they were suggested to me.

Speaker B:

But yeah, that's, that's kind of like how I started the whole thing.

Speaker A:

Yeah, it's.

Speaker A:

It's interesting you said that because as we've talked beforehand, and I know some of my listeners know that we've been reorganizing pigskindispatch.com trying to do a player index similar to what you are, but to organize our podcasts, our videos, our posts.

Speaker A:

Yeah, things like that.

Speaker A:

So always looking for other sites because Pixie and Dispatches we want to distribute football wealth and even if it's not ours, we can point our readers to, to somebody else has some, some great thing, you know, like helmet, helmet archaeology or group database or NFL past players which have some great images.

Speaker A:

We want to do that too because we love the network with folks and promoting a game is, helps us all, you know, because we're fans.

Speaker B:

It does, it does.

Speaker B:

And I've seen some guys, you know, kind of do something similar to what I'm doing and it's like they, they don't want to share the glory, so to speak.

Speaker B:

And I think that's so sad.

Speaker B:

You know, I mean, I mean, you're helping out my site.

Speaker B:

I've helped out.

Speaker B:

I mean, so many people help me out, you know, it'd be wrong of me not to turn around and return the favor.

Speaker B:

And you can just do so much more, you know, trying to collaborate more with other people.

Speaker B:

I mean, it's just, yeah.

Speaker B:

If I had any, any advice.

Speaker B:

Don't, don't try to be, you know, the Lone Ranger.

Speaker B:

Try and just do it on, do with other people.

Speaker B:

Do with other people.

Speaker B:

I mean, strength in numbers, you know.

Speaker A:

So, and you, you mentioned it, you know, so one of the first players I was looking at starting with A's because I was trying to organize my A's first, you know, and, and I, I said I've got to Herb Adderley.

Speaker A:

And I pulled up Herb Adderley on NFL pass players and that's where I really, I'm like going, oh my gosh, what a gold mine.

Speaker A:

Because I, I don't know exactly how I got it up in front of me here, but you've got over a dozen images that I've, maybe I've seen one of the things that Herb, I don't know if Herb Adderley knows he was, had his picture taken that many times because it's.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah, you got some great stuff and different uniforms and you know, not only the Packers, I think you got them with the, the Cowboys and.

Speaker A:

Yes, like that.

Speaker A:

Yeah, tremendous.

Speaker B:

And I try and I, I, I've got you just these old magazines, old magazines from the 50s, 60s, 70s that you can just find so much good stuff.

Speaker B:

Good stuff.

Speaker B:

And, and they're just not around anymore.

Speaker B:

And that, that was another thing that kind of prompted me to, to do this and is, you know, one day all these magazines going to be gone and all the information inside of them, all the images, those, you know, that are history.

Speaker B:

I mean, these are people's lives, you know, that you know, would just.

Speaker B:

They thrilled fans back then.

Speaker B:

They can thrill fans today, and one day that's all going to be gone.

Speaker B:

And knowing that to kind of preserve that digitally, it kind of.

Speaker B:

That kind of helped, you know, led me to do this as well.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker A:

One of the next ones that I came across in the A's is one that I think you must have a really a good passion thing, because he's a former saint and that's Doug.

Speaker A:

Doug Atkins, I think.

Speaker B:

Doug.

Speaker B:

Oh.

Speaker A:

Oh, my gosh.

Speaker A:

So maybe you could talk a little about that was.

Speaker A:

I mean, you have some great stuff in the Doug Atkins.

Speaker B:

What did Bill Curry say about him?

Speaker B:

Doug is.

Speaker B:

Is not a normal.

Speaker B:

He was not a normal human being.

Speaker B:

Doug.

Speaker B:

Yeah, Doug.

Speaker B:

I've read some awesome stuff about being a Saints fan.

Speaker B:

When he was with the Saints.

Speaker B:

I've heard a story that he used to just drive around in his pickup truck looking for biker bars to pick fights with the.

Speaker B:

With gangs of bikers, you know.

Speaker B:

And I actually had a guy on one of the Saints forums respond to me when I made that comment and say, yeah, I had an uncle that was a sheriff back in the day.

Speaker B:

And yeah, he said, yeah, they had had some trouble with Big Doug a few times.

Speaker B:

Yeah, he was.

Speaker B:

He was a trip.

Speaker B:

Yeah, he was.

Speaker B:

He a fascinating.

Speaker B:

Just one of those just fascinating people that, you know, that you just love.

Speaker B:

Us football fans like you and me, we just love to read about.

Speaker B:

We love.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

And you.

Speaker A:

I mean, I'm.

Speaker A:

I'm not only seeing.

Speaker A:

I'm just taking a look at Doug Atkins page right now.

Speaker A:

And you not only have still photos of them like you would see on a football card or magazine, you have action photos of him playing.

Speaker A:

I mean, a plethora of action photos of.

Speaker B:

I've been able to find a lot of images about Doug Atkins.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And even.

Speaker A:

Even advertisement of him promoting a gym, you know, it's just kind of cool too.

Speaker B:

You see, I got that out of old game program.

Speaker B:

Saints game.

Speaker B:

I don't.

Speaker B:

I don't remember who they were playing, but yeah, he's a lot of those Saints players on the side did some advertising.

Speaker B:

Matter of fact, I saw about Johnny Brewer earlier.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

If you look at, uh, his.

Speaker B:

I think he's like the last guy I have, I have a picture of him and a brassiere ad.

Speaker B:

He's not wearing a brassiere, but he's actually promoting a brassiere from one of the department stores down there in New Orleans at the time.

Speaker A:

You're making me have to go search out Johnny Brewer.

Speaker A:

I'm sure everybody's clicking across the world here listening to this.

Speaker B:

He's, uh.

Speaker B:

It should be the very.

Speaker B:

Right now at this point in time.

Speaker B:

Should be the very first.

Speaker B:

If you go to the main page of the very first one.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I just went under your bees and looking at it.

Speaker B:

Okay, well, that's cool, too.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

You got to.

Speaker A:

I see some coining and I wish.

Speaker B:

Unfortunately, I'm not technically savvy enough to.

Speaker B:

You said the alphabetical order.

Speaker B:

I wish I could do it by last name, but they're by first name, and one day when I get really smart, I'll figure out how to do it by last name, so.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

But right now, it's just doing it by the first letter of the first name.

Speaker A:

Well, I.

Speaker A:

I haven't got smart enough to do it either.

Speaker A:

I ended up having both names.

Speaker A:

So Johnny Brewer would show up on J's and B.

Speaker A:

That's okay.

Speaker A:

People find it either way.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker A:

Just.

Speaker A:

Just some great stuff in there.

Speaker A:

And thank you.

Speaker A:

So what is one of the more surprising players that you've come across where maybe you got into it, didn't know much about them.

Speaker A:

You're like, wow, I'm really shocked that I didn't know this about this.

Speaker B:

Oh, gosh.

Speaker B:

One guy that kind of stands out.

Speaker B:

Lonnie Perrin, the running back for the Denver Broncos.

Speaker B:

He would.

Speaker B:

And what.

Speaker B:

What.

Speaker B:

What stood out to me.

Speaker B:

I don't.

Speaker B:

If you go to my.

Speaker B:

To my page, I'll have a gallery.

Speaker B:

I'll have some stats, and then I like to put additional information where I like to link back to other articles of players and stuff.

Speaker B:

And I normally don't link to obituaries, just, you know, just because, you know, we don't need to bring up their.

Speaker B:

Their passing.

Speaker B:

But reading Lonnie Perrin's obituary, there were.

Speaker B:

It was an all.

Speaker B:

It was an online obituary.

Speaker B:

There were so many people just celebrating this man's life.

Speaker B:

I mean, he.

Speaker B:

He was incredibly involved in the community, and everybody.

Speaker B:

Everybody just, you know, had nothing but glowing, great, remarkable things to say about this man and about his work in the community that I link back that.

Speaker B:

That was actually his wife.

Speaker B:

His wife actually sent me an email and asked me to put up a gallery for him, which I was happy to do.

Speaker B:

I was happy to do.

Speaker B:

Jimmy Robinson.

Speaker B:

Jimmy Robinson played for.

Speaker B:

He was a standout at lsu right down the road from.

Speaker B:

From where I'm at, National championship team.

Speaker B:

He played one of those great Kansas City Chiefs teams.

Speaker B:

He was at the beginning, the very first year of the AFL Made it all the way to the, to the.

Speaker B:

When they merged with the NFL.

Speaker B:

And guy just had a pedigree that just was just incredible.

Speaker B:

And what stood out to me is research.

Speaker B:

I wasn't familiar with him.

Speaker B:

Again, like I said, I'm still learning about a lot of these guys reading about him.

Speaker B:

Just had an incredible career and he's acting, he's still alive and he's running a boy's home up in Monroe, that's up in north Louisiana.

Speaker B:

And but what stood out to me for that, I got an email one day and saying, hey, why don't you make a gallery about Jimmy Robinson?

Speaker B:

I said, cool.

Speaker B:

So I started researching him and I said, oh wow, this he sounds like a really fascinating player, which he is.

Speaker B:

And he, the guy sent me a whole bunch of links and said, here, go to the these sites and get these pictures.

Speaker B:

Because I asked him and say, if you have any pictures of them, please send it to me.

Speaker B:

And he sent me these links to these websites and I don't like doing that.

Speaker B:

I don't.

Speaker B:

The images that you see on the site, about 99 of them are pictures I have scanned by myself or have been sent to me.

Speaker B:

Okay?

Speaker B:

The vast, vast, vast majority are, you know, I, I got them, I got them.

Speaker B:

I didn't just go get them off a website.

Speaker B:

I will, I will do that with permission if somebody gives me a permission to do that.

Speaker B:

I don't have a problem with that.

Speaker B:

And so, but anyway, I emailed them back.

Speaker B:

I said, hey, I said, I, I appreciate it, but I'm, I don't want to just go to this guy's site and just take his images.

Speaker B:

I don't want to do that.

Speaker B:

I immediately got an email back saying, Jimmy says, it's just fine, go ahead, take all the pictures you want.

Speaker B:

He's sitting right next to me.

Speaker B:

He's my father in law.

Speaker B:

So I went ahead, I did it, put some pictures up and made the whole thing for Jimmy, Jimmy Robinson.

Speaker B:

And next thing I know, a matter of, I think that's one of the comments on Jimmy Robinson's gallery.

Speaker B:

His son in law tells me, he says, man, Jimmy is reliving every single picture you have on here.

Speaker B:

He said, he is telling me all about it.

Speaker B:

He said, man, you made this man's day.

Speaker B:

And that, that made me feel good.

Speaker B:

That made me feel really good that this, you know, guy in the twilight of his life, you know, that is appreciating that somebody remembered him in his younger days.

Speaker B:

I mean that just that I dig.

Speaker A:

That, I dig that Yeah, I mean, that is.

Speaker A:

That is definitely a cool story.

Speaker A:

And you know, remember, they're these guys, these players, we.

Speaker A:

We put them on pedestals and we think that, yeah, they're so much.

Speaker A:

They're.

Speaker A:

They're humans, just like we are, and have emotions and the memories, especially you reflect back on your earlier life and well, there's happen to be playing professional football and.

Speaker A:

Yeah, playing at a high level and doing some great things, and that's got to be fun.

Speaker B:

Like you said, it's just.

Speaker B:

They're fascinating.

Speaker B:

They're fast.

Speaker B:

The things that they have gone through, the things that they have done, the things that they're involved with, with the community.

Speaker B:

I mean, it's just.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I.

Speaker B:

I just.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I think that kind of stuff needs to be brought out because there's so many players and that.

Speaker B:

That never made it to the.

Speaker B:

To the limelight, but they had such fascinating back, you know, doing what they had to do to.

Speaker B:

To make the pros.

Speaker B:

I mean, I mean, how many, like I said as a boy, fantasizing about playing.

Speaker B:

And these guys actually did it, you know?

Speaker B:

No, they may not be all pros or hall of fames or MVPs, but still, I mean, they.

Speaker B:

They got there.

Speaker B:

They did it.

Speaker B:

So to give them their recognition is, I think is.

Speaker B:

Is cool.

Speaker A:

I mean, how much fun is it?

Speaker A:

I.

Speaker A:

I know from personal experience, like, I've.

Speaker A:

I had the great honor last summer getting to interview Coach LeBeau, Dick LeBeau.

Speaker A:

Oh, and we got to talk about.

Speaker A:

We got to talk about his days playing for Woody Hayes.

Speaker B:

Yeah, he just recently retired, didn't he?

Speaker B:

Didn't.

Speaker B:

He did.

Speaker B:

Finally.

Speaker A:

He was like three, three, four years ago.

Speaker A:

He retired Titans, but he was with the Steelers, the Bengals, you know, assistant coach.

Speaker A:

Oh, yeah, he's.

Speaker A:

He's probably pushing 80.

Speaker A:

I'm not 80.

Speaker A:

Maybe if you hear me and I'm wrong, please forgive me on that.

Speaker A:

But he's.

Speaker A:

He.

Speaker A:

But he played for Woody Hayes in the late 50s.

Speaker A:

No, for the great Detroit Lions.

Speaker A:

The defensive backs.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And everybody.

Speaker A:

You know, I'm a Steelers fan, so I was definitely interested in Coach LeBeau.

Speaker A:

And I also got the opportunity.

Speaker A:

I was sitting on a panel last year in Franklin for my first book that I wrote during Western Pennsylvania to meet John Cole, who was the left tackle the Steelers in 70s.

Speaker A:

One of my, you know, know, I had like, I went fanboy.

Speaker A:

I'm like, oh, my God, here's a guy when I was, you know, you pre, teen, I'm watching this guy playing these guys or talk to them or correspond like, like you did, gentlemen, you're just talking about and you find out what great human beings these people are.

Speaker A:

They're helping John Colb's helping military veterans that are disabled and help, I mean he's in his 70s.

Speaker A:

He's putting guys in pools and helping them do physical therapy and things like that.

Speaker A:

Or Coach LeBeau, you know, reaching out to people and just being the kind soul and that's why all his players love her.

Speaker A:

You see why players love these guys and they're co players.

Speaker A:

How is that for you?

Speaker A:

When you get to talk and you get to have relationships, even a correspondence.

Speaker B:

And you know, just a correspondence.

Speaker A:

It's good people.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

It definitely broadens my, my horizons, my, my vision and what I know about things.

Speaker B:

I tell my Roman Gabriel, there's a video about him and I think I actually have it on, on YouTube.

Speaker B:

I found wasn't really being promoted.

Speaker B:

I took it, you know, sorry, and I put it on YouTube and he actually was working before he passed away at old folks homes.

Speaker B:

Going into these old folks homes, helping these do, do rehab.

Speaker B:

I mean motivating them to get up and move around and be physically active and stuff like that.

Speaker B:

I mean, yeah, it's just, yeah, these, it's a travesty to just number one at some of the, the, you see the bad actors in the athletic world and how they tend to give, you know, we concentrate on that and we tend to forget about the good guys.

Speaker B:

The good guys who really, really, you know, appreciate what their, their status in life and try to give back to the people who, who put them on the pedestal, you know, trying to give back to him and Yeah, I, I, yeah, those people, they deserve recognition.

Speaker B:

They deserve recognition.

Speaker B:

We need to just forget about the bad guys.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And that's what I think NFL pass players do.

Speaker A:

And you were saying you, you wish you hadn't picked that name.

Speaker A:

Well, it definitely, it tells exactly what your site is about it.

Speaker A:

There's, there's no surprises to people.

Speaker A:

You're, you're going in, you're seeing past players of the NFL and you know, I think you've even included some from the other leagues, if I'm not mistaken.

Speaker B:

I do try to include.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

From the World Football League.

Speaker B:

The American.

Speaker B:

Yeah, like I said, include them because I mean that's part of their career.

Speaker B:

That and I do have a lot of pictures that I find from college, the college year.

Speaker B:

Sometimes I come across those and I like to include those as well.

Speaker B:

I think I just put up one for, for Greg Pruitt Greg Pruitt from.

Speaker A:

Browns and.

Speaker B:

Yeah, with the Browns.

Speaker B:

Oklahoma.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And played for the Raiders a little bit.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I found a picture of him that I put on his from the Sugar bowl.

Speaker B:

Playing in the Sugar bowl.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker B:

So yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

But definitely I remember both those Pr.

Speaker A:

Mike Pruitt and Was it Mike Pruitt and Greg.

Speaker A:

They weren't related.

Speaker A:

But they were the Browns.

Speaker A:

No, they weren't.

Speaker B:

They weren't.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

But yeah, they were both had their day.

Speaker B:

I remember when I think it was Greg, I made Mike.

Speaker B:

One of them went down, the other one stepped up and had some pretty successful careers.

Speaker B:

So yeah, I think that.

Speaker B:

And if you look on their all time career Russia, they're both pretty close.

Speaker B:

I think.

Speaker B:

I think they're pretty.

Speaker B:

Both pretty close to each other.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker A:

Yeah, that's.

Speaker A:

I, I know them from, you know, first of all it's only 100 miles away.

Speaker A:

So I've been to Cleveland Old Cleveland Municipal and, and watch the Browns play especially twice a year they play my team, the Steelers, you know.

Speaker B:

That's right.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

They're still in the same.

Speaker B:

That turned into a huge rivalry.

Speaker A:

Huge.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I remember when, back in 80s when Cleveland was.

Speaker B:

They were almost there.

Speaker B:

They were all.

Speaker B:

They were kept getting.

Speaker B:

They.

Speaker B:

They were scaring some people.

Speaker A:

The drive, the catch, you know.

Speaker A:

John.

Speaker A:

Oh, we did them in a couple times.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

Oh.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I feel being a Saints fan, I, I can, I can definitely sympathize with heartbreaking losses.

Speaker B:

So yeah, that's.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

But again, I mean it's all fun.

Speaker B:

It's all fun looking back on these memories and.

Speaker B:

Yeah, and that's why I do it.

Speaker B:

That's why I try to do it.

Speaker A:

So you.

Speaker A:

We talked about a little bit earlier you said, you know, sometimes you want to, you want to catch people off guard and say oh yeah, I forgot this guy played.

Speaker A:

And I've sort of, you know, my, my recent memory of him wasn't.

Speaker A:

Wasn't there.

Speaker A:

Who are maybe some of those players that you personally sort of caught wind of.

Speaker A:

You.

Speaker A:

You talked about a few that people emailed you in to get in there.

Speaker A:

But who are some things that some folks that you've discovered and said I forgot about this guy.

Speaker A:

And then all of a sudden you found a, you know, a treasure trove of images of him.

Speaker B:

Yeah, let's see.

Speaker B:

I grew up a Saints fan so I, I think of some of the older being being a kid unfortunately.

Speaker B:

I mean again this is.

Speaker B:

Was before the Internet, so and being where.

Speaker B:

Where I'm at in South Louisiana we didn't have a whole lot of exposure.

Speaker B:

Other football teams, uh, you know, I told you before, both of the, the guys, if you weren't a Saints fan, you were usually a Cowboys fan.

Speaker B:

Usually.

Speaker B:

That's the way.

Speaker B:

That's the way it ended up.

Speaker B:

But some of the Saints players, Dylan Moore, he was a.

Speaker B:

A defensive tackle that played like 14 seasons for the Saints and kind of.

Speaker B:

And yeah, he was one of the fe.

Speaker B:

He was almost like the Archie Manning of the defense.

Speaker B:

The Saints actually had a couple of guys like that.

Speaker B:

Tommy Myers was another one, a really, really aggressive free safety.

Speaker B:

But again, all things the way they were, you know, they didn't get a bunch of recognition.

Speaker B:

They really didn't.

Speaker B:

But as Saints fans, oh, we loved them.

Speaker B:

We.

Speaker B:

I mean, we thought they were great.

Speaker B:

You know, they were heroes to us as kids.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker B:

Yeah, some of those, Those old Saints players, Tony Galbraith.

Speaker B:

Tony.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah, I used to love to have Tony Galbraith, and he was.

Speaker B:

He was incredible.

Speaker B:

He was.

Speaker B:

To me, he is still one of the, The.

Speaker B:

The underrated running backs of, of that time frame, the 70s and even in the 80s.

Speaker B:

He ended up with the super bowl, winning the super bowl with the Giants.

Speaker B:

But he, he was a great, great player.

Speaker B:

And he teamed up with Chuck Muncie, who.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I mean, Muncie was great, but it's like every conversation about Muncie has could have been somewhere in the conversation.

Speaker B:

He just.

Speaker B:

Yeah, he's all, yeah, I mean, you know the story.

Speaker B:

Check Muncie.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker B:

But yeah, he teamed up with.

Speaker B:

With Chuck Muncie and yeah, he, He.

Speaker B:

He was a good one.

Speaker B:

He was a good one.

Speaker B:

Conrad Doble.

Speaker B:

We had Conrad Dover for a little while with the Saints, and he brought that mean, nasty reputation.

Speaker B:

Unfortunately, he didn't.

Speaker B:

He, I think, only played like one full season for the Saints.

Speaker B:

He was injured, but I can still remember him as a kid with his arm in a cast like.

Speaker B:

Like a big giant battering ram, you know, Big giant cast swinging it at people.

Speaker B:

And I remember the announcers making comments about him just swinging that thing all over the place at people.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker B:

Yeah, so right off.

Speaker B:

Yeah, that's.

Speaker B:

That's.

Speaker B:

As a young, A young Saints fan, that's some of the guys that, that I, I enjoyed watching and I enjoyed seeing.

Speaker A:

Yeah, very, very cool.

Speaker A:

All right, so you have, you have the site where you have it right now.

Speaker A:

What is sort of your.

Speaker A:

Your goal?

Speaker A:

What do you Want to see NFL PassPlayers.com become?

Speaker A:

What's your.

Speaker A:

Your ultimate goal?

Speaker A:

To strive for what I would like to see.

Speaker B:

And again, this goes back to my lack of.

Speaker B:

Of.

Speaker B:

Of being technically savvy, you know, not knowing enough.

Speaker B:

I would love it to where I could set up something to where people could contribute images, you know, they could put pictures that they have.

Speaker B:

Because I'm always asking for people if.

Speaker B:

If they, you know, they have pictures of these players, you know, old magazines, old books laying around.

Speaker B:

If they want to see those pictures, you know, on the Internet, I would love to see them.

Speaker B:

I mean, but again, I'm only one person.

Speaker B:

I can only get to them as much as possible.

Speaker B:

But, yeah, I would love to see it to where people could.

Speaker B:

Could put those up themselves and those could be displayed.

Speaker B:

I mean, obviously, I, I would, you know, go through them and check them out, make sure they're all good to go, but yeah, that.

Speaker B:

That's.

Speaker B:

That's kind of like.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

What I would like to.

Speaker A:

To see where fans expand your gallery.

Speaker B:

Yes, because they are.

Speaker B:

Every time I.

Speaker B:

I open up a magazine or a book, and I've got.

Speaker B:

I'm right in front.

Speaker B:

I got a whole bookcase full of old books and magazines, and I.

Speaker B:

I come across, it's like, oh, man, I need to make a gallery for him.

Speaker B:

Oh, my God, I need to make a gallery for him.

Speaker B:

You know, he needs a gallery.

Speaker A:

He.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And again, it's just.

Speaker B:

It's just the time.

Speaker B:

It's the time to put all this on, and I'm doing what I can.

Speaker B:

I take suggestions.

Speaker B:

I said, last one with Johnny Brewer, his nephew sent that to me, and I try to get to that as much as possible, so.

Speaker A:

Well, very cool.

Speaker A:

Sounds like you have some.

Speaker A:

Some great.

Speaker A:

Well, you have some great stuff up, definitely.

Speaker A:

It sounds like you have some great goals and some things that we'd love to.

Speaker A:

To see you achieve on there.

Speaker A:

And why don't you.

Speaker A:

Before we let you go, let's make sure that the folks have your.

Speaker A:
