Speaker:

Welcome to 12 Minute Converse with Jesus Believers.

Speaker:

God chose first to have a conversation with us, his creation.

Speaker:

Our prayer is that this listening space brings growth and transforms your life forever.

Speaker:

Praise God for you Azam, it's a great pleasure to connect with you, a part of the world that you're in today.

Speaker:

Today, Angola, it's really nice to be with you all here.

Speaker:

I'm coming from Trinidad and specifically the island of Trinidad.

Speaker:

What got you to the place where you are today to make this connection possible?

Speaker:

If you think about it, what would you say is attributed to that?

Speaker:

At present, to be the leading of the Holy Spirit, the timing of God for everything that just falls into place.

Speaker:

He's the God of the Kairos moment, the right time.

Speaker:

A little further back would be my testimony coming out of Islam.

Speaker:

I was born and grew up in a Muslim home.

Speaker:

My family actually has a particular lineage where my great-grandfather was one of the heads or founding members of Asja in the Caribbean, more so in Trinidad and Tobago.

Speaker:

He was an imam.

Speaker:

In the community, I grew up as a Muslim for 20 years.

Speaker:

Throughout my journey, I've been faced with a lot of varying challenges spiritually where I would have encountered the supernatural at a very young age in terms of the demonic forces trying to interact with me.

Speaker:

Throughout those years, I struggled with depression.

Speaker:

That depression came on through various circumstances that were happening around my life physically.

Speaker:

This was in the schooling sector.

Speaker:

I'd been bullied and different things of that nature.

Speaker:

Then, spiritually, having to deal with spiritual warfare in a home that, quite honestly, was coming out of the Islam aspect.

Speaker:

Any demons operating in a life did not have the power of Christ there to cast out those demons.

Speaker:

I was tormented in various moments throughout my development.

Speaker:

When I got into university, that was where the exposure for everything happened.

Speaker:

I actually got it myself.

Speaker:

I got into the university campus orientation in a week.

Speaker:

I went to visit the different booths.

Speaker:

There was this booth called Campus Crusade for Christ.

Speaker:

I approached them for a Bible because they were giving out free Bibles.

Speaker:

When I got there, they ran out.

Speaker:

They took my contact information and they said that they would have contacted me to get a Bible.

Speaker:

Two weeks later, I met Duane Weeks, who is now the national director of Campus Crusade for Christ.

Speaker:

He sat me down and he shared with me the four spiritual laws.

Speaker:

He said to me he's not coming to debate.

Speaker:

He's just coming to present.

Speaker:

I said I'm not here to debate.

Speaker:

I'm coming to present Islam to him.

Speaker:

We shared each other's beliefs and he handed me the Bible.

Speaker:

At that time, all I wanted was the Bible.

Speaker:

I didn't want the gospel.

Speaker:

I didn't want to know Jesus.

Speaker:

I was comfortable in my faith.

Speaker:

I came from that background.

Speaker:

I didn't want to commit shirk, which is in Islam the unforgivable sin, by accepting Christ or engaging in the thought of a God apart from Allah.

Speaker:

After that conversation, I ended up making a diversion back into ungodly relationships.

Speaker:

One relationship, it broke me up so bad that I actually ended up in drugs.

Speaker:

I started smoking and selling drugs.

Speaker:

To the point that a breaking point for me happened when a supernatural encounter, my first real supernatural encounter with Christ, came when I was about to bring in guns and ammunition into the country.

Speaker:

When I was about to make the phone call, the audible voice of Christ called me by name.

Speaker:

I took my phone out and I just heard this loud thunderous voice surrounding me like a 360.

Speaker:

It said, Azam, stop.

Speaker:

You are taking this a little too far.

Speaker:

At that time, I did not know it was Christ.

Speaker:

I did not know.

Speaker:

I just knew that this was God speaking.

Speaker:

It was so supernatural.

Speaker:

My conversion did not start there, but the pursuit of drugs stopped.

Speaker:

Months later, that addiction to the drugs still read its head.

Speaker:

My family found out.

Speaker:

They removed me from campus where I was staying residentially.

Speaker:

My mom expressed to me that my little brother said, all my life, Azam was a role model, but now it turns out I have to become one for him.

Speaker:

At that statement, I said, Mom, I need to go and see someone.

Speaker:

I need to get help from a psychologist.

Speaker:

When I started going to these sessions, about three months inside, I realized it was not working.

Speaker:

I said to them, Mom, I'm just fooling you.

Speaker:

I'm fooling myself with this, but I genuinely wanted the help.

Speaker:

I went home that day and I was so defeated.

Speaker:

I cried out to God and I said, God of the universe, if you are real, help.

Speaker:

The next day, I went into a barber shop and I sat there and I saw a plaque on the wall, Proverbs 3, verse 5, trust in me, Lord, all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.

Speaker:

When I saw that, it just leapt, it jumped out to me and I got confused and upset at the same time.

Speaker:

I was like, God, why are you sending me to the Bible and not to the Quran?

Speaker:

Anyway, I decided, let me go home and pick up the same Bible that Duane gave me two years prior.

Speaker:

When I opened that Bible, the six sisters acknowledged me in all their ways and I shall direct your paths.

Speaker:

When I started living according to the book of Proverbs, I started doing history, reading the book of Proverbs.

Speaker:

I got complete and total deliverance from the addiction.

Speaker:

Now that confused me because all my life I was taught that this is a corrupt book, but how can a corrupt book bring such a change and transformation to me?

Speaker:

So I decided to do my investigation.

Speaker:

I started researching and studying the history of the Bible, the history of the Quran, the Dead Sea Scrolls, 10 to 12 hours a day.

Speaker:

I came at a bridge point where I had to realize that I was in a discussion with some family members in the States secretly, secret Bible studies, and I was able to even outwit my Christian cousin in an argument.

Speaker:

I was employing now Islamic apologetics or Islamic arguments to her and she couldn't answer.

Speaker:

I won the argument.

Speaker:

I broke down in tears because I still felt defeated.

Speaker:

So I went to God again in tears and I asked him, God, you need to settle this once and for all.

Speaker:

Is Jesus the son of God?

Speaker:

God is son of God or is he just a prophet?

Speaker:

The very next day, I stood outside my house waiting for a taxi to go to school, but usually only take five to 10 minutes max for a car.

Speaker:

45 minutes, no car was on the road.

Speaker:

And I just turned to my book bag where my Bible was.

Speaker:

I turned to the road and I said, God, if you send a car now, I promise you I'll read the Bible when I get on the bus.

Speaker:

As soon as I said that, a car stopped in front of my yard that I did not stop.

Speaker:

When I walked up to the car, this elderly man, he said, son, jump in.

Speaker:

And when I jumped in, he drove past every other person that was on that street waiting for a taxi.

Speaker:

And I told him what I just told God and he started to laugh.

Speaker:

I asked him why you're laughing.

Speaker:

He said, well, this is not the route I usually take, but a voice told me to come here this morning.

Speaker:

And when I was driving and I saw you were glowing and a voice told me to pick you up.

Speaker:

And he said to me, when you get onto the bus, read first Corinthians 13.

Speaker:

That's my favorite scripture.

Speaker:

When I got onto the bus and I opened that verse and I saw love, a sigh and a deep breath that just came out of my mouth was, oh my goodness, Jesus, your God.

Speaker:

I did not see the scripture in 1 John yet about God is love.

Speaker:

I just bore witness.

Speaker:

I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and I believe in my heart.

Speaker:

I asked God, is he God, the son of God, or is he just a prophet?

Speaker:

He answered, he is love.

Speaker:

And coming from Islam, Allah is not love.

Speaker:

So this was a different paradigm shift.

Speaker:

Now, as clear as you're hearing, my voice is as clear as I could is.

Speaker:

It was an audible voice.

Speaker:

Every single day, him and I would be talking and he'd be responding.

Speaker:

And the only time that Jesus was ever silent in my discourse with him is when I asked him this question.

Speaker:

I said, Lord, how is it hundreds of Christians can be experiencing what I'm experiencing?

Speaker:

And they allowed me to remain a Muslim all these years.

Speaker:

That was the only time he was silent in my discourse.

Speaker:

Now, during that period, just to fast forward a little bit, I had to explain this now to my family that I am now a Christian and that brought on persecution like I've never seen.

Speaker:

That's another thing by itself.

Speaker:

And when the persecution came, it actually alongside a lot of supernatural events started to take place.

Speaker:

I didn't have the guidance.

Speaker:

My dad said to me that these things are happening, these supernatural things are happening because Allah is trying to protect you.

Speaker:

So I said, you know what?

Speaker:

Let me come back to Islam.

Speaker:

When I came back to Islam for that brief moment, all the demons and all the addictions, everything came back seven times worse, just like what Jesus said would.

Speaker:

And it was at that point I knew without a shadow of doubt that Jesus Christ, he is the way.

Speaker:

Because how could me coming back to Islam, if that's the truth, how could that bring more demons?

Speaker:

And Jesus said that they will.

Speaker:

So I knew that he was the way.

Speaker:

And from that journey onward, it took some time and doing for me to break free from that again.

Speaker:

And then I had to declare again to my family that I am no longer Muslim.

Speaker:

I am a Christian.

Speaker:

And for two years straight, it was variant types of persecutions.

Speaker:

But God has been faithful.

Speaker:

I have gone around the world, preached the gospel.

Speaker:

I'm a Christian today.

Speaker:

I function and operate in ministry.

Speaker:

I'm in the process of actually writing a couple of books to even help and equip the body of Christ.

Speaker:

And I love Jesus.

Speaker:

I won't ever go back to Islam.

Speaker:

As a matter of fact, I'm an apologist today and I speak on the aspects of Islam and the attempts of rebunking Islam and exposing it for what it is to shed light so that others could come to Christ.

Speaker:

What happens now in terms of the peace that you experience?

Speaker:

You talked about the demons being around.

Speaker:

What is life like now today?

Speaker:

When you know the truth, even in the midst of adversity, the truth becomes an anchor.

Speaker:

I would be lying if I told anyone that when you come to Christ, it's going to get easier.

Speaker:

As a matter of fact, sometimes coming to the Lord will make it harder, according to Scripture, with regards to persecution and different things and trials and diverse temptations.

Speaker:

And what I can say is that I have an anchor in my soul now that even, and I've been at many junctures in my Christian walk where I had to be faced with hard decisions.

Speaker:

And just like in John 6, where even Jesus turned back to his disciples and he asked them, are you going to leave also with these hard sayings or these hard things?

Speaker:

And you know, Peter responded, Lord, where else could I go?

Speaker:

You are the one who has the words of eternal life.

Speaker:

So I'm in that position where I know the truth.

Speaker:

So whether it's hard or easy, where else could I go?

Speaker:

He is the one who has the words of eternal life.

Speaker:

Five years from today, you're listening to this conversation.

Speaker:

What would you leave as a message for future you?

Speaker:

Set your eyes on Christ and finish well.

Speaker:

In closing, is there anything else you'd like to share with our amazing audience?

Speaker:

Don't be scared to share your faith because there may be an enthusiastic young man or young woman or even an old person that is asking the same question that I asked.

Speaker:

How could hundreds of Christians be experiencing what you're experiencing now?

Speaker:

And I love you to stay that way that you are.

Speaker:

Azam, this has been a great pleasure.

Speaker:

One I treasure.

Speaker:

Thank you for being on What is Inspired by 12 Minute Chronicles.
