Shownotes

The salient point of this week’s analysis is the notable reversal of market rotation, characterized by a rapid shift from a broad-based investment strategy to a concentrated focus on artificial intelligence and cloud computing stocks. Throughout the week, we witnessed a dichotomy in market behavior, with early optimism surrounding financials, healthcare, and industrials giving way to a resurgence in AI-driven equities, particularly following the impressive earnings reports from Microsoft and Amazon. This volatility underscores the market's inability to maintain a consistent narrative, necessitating a cautious approach to investment strategies. As we reflect on the week's developments, it becomes evident that the breadth of market engagement has narrowed significantly, with only a handful of stocks driving upward momentum. Looking ahead, we must remain vigilant, particularly in observing the forthcoming jobs report and the sustainability of the AI trade amidst a backdrop of fluctuating economic indicators.

Takeaways:

  • The week witnessed a tumultuous market with significant shifts in asset rotation, showcasing volatility.
  • Initial investor sentiment favored sectors beyond technology, but ultimately, the AI trade regained prominence.
  • Key earnings reports from Microsoft and Amazon catalyzed a swift reversal in market trends, intensifying tech investments.
  • Market breadth narrowed dramatically as only a few major companies drove overall performance despite initial broad gains.
  • The Federal Reserve's stance on inflation indicates a continued vigilance over economic factors, including AI spending dynamics.
  • Upcoming economic indicators, particularly the jobs report, will be pivotal in shaping market expectations and investor sentiment.

Transcripts

Speaker A:

Foreign welcome to the final daily read for the week of July 31st through the or July 27th through the 31st.

Speaker A:

It was a crazy week this week we call this one the week the rotation reversed.

Speaker A:

Two opposite markets in five days.

Speaker A:

So let's talk about what happened this week.

Speaker A:

This week was the week the market could not make up its mind.

Speaker A:

On Monday the story was the great rotation Monday flee or money fleeing the big tech for everywhere else.

Speaker A:

By Friday, the story was in tatters and the AI trade was right back up on top five days to completely opposite markets.

Speaker A:

So let's wrap up the week and look at what's coming.

Speaker A:

So here's how it played out.

Speaker A:

Early in the week, the rotation was in full force.

Speaker A:

Money was leaving the crowded AI and chip names and flowing into everything else.

Speaker A:

Financials, healthcare, industrials.

Speaker A:

The average stock was making new highs while tech lagged and the unwind even went global with South Korea's market falling into an official bear market as the AI chip trade came undone midweek.

Speaker A:

The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady, but the chair made it clear that inflation fight was far from over and tellingly flagged AI spending itself as new inflation.

Speaker A:

And this is something that the Fed is going to be watching very carefully.

Speaker A:

Then came the turn.

Speaker A:

Wednesday night, Microsoft reported blowout earnings.

Speaker A:

Thursday night Amazon did the same.

Speaker A:

Both powered by cloud and AI and both announcing they'd spend even more.

Speaker A:

With Amazon alone raising its capital budget to $220 billion, that reignited the AI trade and the money rushed back in.

Speaker A:

The rotation reversed almost overnight.

Speaker A:

But the catch, it's really the catch that matters.

Speaker A:

It was really narrow.

Speaker A:

For every Microsoft and Amazon soaring, there was an apple down 8% on weak guidance and and meta down 9.

Speaker A:

The market didn't broadly rally.

Speaker A:

It crowded back into a handful of the AI winners.

Speaker A:

So where did the scoreboard land for the week?

Speaker A:

The direction was up but choppy the whole way.

Speaker A:

Breadth and this is the tell for the entire week.

Speaker A:

It started broad and ended very narrow.

Speaker A:

Early on, the average stock was leading.

Speaker A:

By Friday, five names were carrying the market credit.

Speaker A:

And this is an important one.

Speaker A:

The bond market stayed calm, start to finish.

Speaker A:

No stress all week.

Speaker A:

Volatility elevated and whippy.

Speaker A:

A genuine two way tape.

Speaker A:

And the leadership.

Speaker A:

It flipped cleanly from a broad rotation into a narrow AI cloud melt up.

Speaker A:

The one constant in a week of chaos was credit staying calm.

Speaker A:

That's what told us that this was a positioning shuffle.

Speaker A:

Big money changed seats in a hurry.

Speaker A:

And not that the financial system was cracking.

Speaker A:

It was painful but dangerous.

Speaker A:

Here's what this week teaches.

Speaker A:

It's worth more than any single market call don't marry a Narrative On Monday the smart sounding take was tech was finished.

Speaker A:

On Friday it was AI's back by the dip.

Speaker A:

Both were very seductive, but we're half right and anyone who bet the farm on either one got whipsawed inside of a week.

Speaker A:

The thing that didn't change was the credit market call from start to finish.

Speaker A:

When the narrative flips twice in five days but the underlying plumbing stays steady, the move isn't just to chase the story.

Speaker A:

It's to stay diversified, hold onto your positions and let the market show you where which way it's going instead of trying to guess.

Speaker A:

Weeks like this reward patience and punish conviction.

Speaker A:

So what are we going to watch this next week?

Speaker A:

It's really three big things and one that's been kind of hanging out.

Speaker A:

First, the big one monthly jobs report lands on Friday and it's a first real read on whether the economy is holding up even as growth softens.

Speaker A:

That's the marquee event for the week.

Speaker A:

Second, can this AI trade hold without new blockbuster earnings to fuel it?

Speaker A:

The mega caps had all reported have all reported now.

Speaker A:

So next week the market has to stand on its own and the earnings reports for the companies downstream of the big mega players and a narrow rally with no fresh catalyst is a fragile thing.

Speaker A:

And third, watch the beaten down side, the financials, healthcare and defensive that got dumped this week.

Speaker A:

If that selling was mostly forced for money raised to hurry to chase those AI names, those stocks should start to find their footing.

Speaker A:

If they keep sliding, that tells us something is different.

Speaker A:

The tape is unsettled.

Speaker A:

Next week we find out which of the two stories was the actual real one.

Speaker A:

So in summary for this week, the the thesis is the rotation reversed, narrowly.

Speaker A:

Confidence.

Speaker A:

We're putting that at a medium at this point.

Speaker A:

It's not high, it's not low, it's at a medium.

Speaker A:

We just don't know which direction things are going to go.

Speaker A:

Risk level, however, is elevated because we are seeing really drastic moves either direction.

Speaker A:

Watching for this week, Friday's jobs report and Can AI hold Alone?

Speaker A:

And the bottom line is it's two stories.

Speaker A:

One week next week tells us which one of those stories is real.

Speaker A:

So that's your weekly wrap.

Speaker A:

Have a great weekend.
