It’s a Dog’s Life – Humor Unplugged

Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before.

Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase wisdom and create a living legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1057 of our trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life – something to cheer you and provide a bit a levity in your life.

We are told inProverbs 15:30,“A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health.”We are also encouraged in Proverbs 17:22, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.” Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let’s jump right in with today’s funny, which is titled…

It’s a Dog’s Life

Sam, a veterinarian, had been called to examine a very ill fifteen-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Duke. The dog’s owner, Ron, and his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Duke and they were hoping for a miracle.

Sam examined Duke and found he was dying of cancer. Sam told the family that he couldn’t do anything for Duke, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As they made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told Sam they thought it would be good for four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, Sam felt that familiar catch in his throat as Duke’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that Sam wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Duke slipped peacefully away.

Shane seemed to accept Duke’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. As Sam and the family sat together for a while after Duke’s death, they wondered aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.”

Startled, they all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned everyone. They had never heard a more comforting explanation.

Shane said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life—like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?”

Shane, the four-year-old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

I hope that brought a smile to your face today, if so, pass that smile onto someone else who needs it. Our Thursday thought is “love everyone, all the time and be nice to them.”

Our verse for today is Philippians 4:4-5, “Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.”

As you enjoy these nuggets of humor, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of our Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.
