Shownotes

Chad Petersen spent fifty years in Texas being exactly who everyone told him to be, shaping his identity for him. He worked to be the model Mormon kid, trying to earn his father's approval, the funny guy in the bowler hat, the husband who married quickly because he never learned how to be alone. Then a divorce broke him wide open. He gave away nearly everything he owned and went on a cross-country trip across the United States. On the tenth day of the first international trip of his life, he pulled his suitcase off the van in a small Ecuadorian mountain town and told everyone to leave him there. Two years later, it's where he calls home and it's where he learned what performance had been built to avoid, to simply be alone with himself.

In this conversation, host Mike Forrester dig into the difference between the identity you actually chose and the one that was handed to you by family, faith, society, and everyone else with a story about who you're "supposed" to be. Chad shares the practical tools he now uses and teaches: a three times a day random check-in that asks where am I, what am I feeling, what am I resisting, plus the practice of naming his recurring inner "visitors" (the Performer and the self-sabotaging Goalkeeper) so he can separate them from his true self. As well as the six-step ORIGIN framework, guided by animal archetypes, that walks men back to who they were before the world edited them.

Chad describes the transformational morning he watched a turkey vulture spiral upward without ever flapping its wings, and the river below his balcony that's already exactly where it's supposed to be. That's the breakthrough he wants every man to have: you are enough right now, not because of anything you've done, but simply because you exist. It's the same truth he worked to give his kids, who came out to him first, and who told him he was the parent they don't have to talk about in therapy. A grounded, hopeful episode for any man tired of performing for approval and ready to find out who he actually is, discovering your real identity.

What You'll Learn In This Episode:

  • How to spot the language of a borrowed identity: the words "should" and "supposed to" as red flags that you may be living someone else's story
  • A simple three question check-in (Where am I? What am I feeling in my body? What am I resisting?) you can run three times a day to build real self-awareness
  • Why naming your recurring patterns as separate "visitors" lets you recognize them as not you and loosen their grip
  • The difference between doing something because you love it and doing it for validation, attention, and approval
  • Chad's six-step ORIGIN framework for getting back to who you were before everyone else edited you
  • Why you don't have to be "fixed" or perfect to start showing up differently, being hurt and present is enough, especially for your kids
