This is The Dwelling Place from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

Today, we're studying Second Samuel

eight through nine, the corresponding

4

:

story in First Chronicles 18, and Psalm

thirty-three, thirty-six, and thirty-nine.

5

:

Today, David will take the high road.

6

:

God will grant him victory in every

direction as He promised in the Davidic

7

:

Covenant, and David will prove that

all the success has not gone to his head

8

:

In the Psalms, we'll be warned about

not walking in sinful intentions and

9

:

provided with so many reasons to praise.

10

:

In Second Samuel eight and First

Chronicles 18, we learn that David

11

:

had victory in every direction.

12

:

As someone not as familiar with

the geography of that time, I

13

:

definitely saw the theme that David

was defeating a lot of his enemies.

14

:

But it wasn't quite as clear to me

that there was an enemy from the north,

15

:

the south, the east, and the west

that God had given him victory over.

16

:

We also learned that David

collected gold, silver, and bronze.

17

:

Why is this so important?

18

:

Because in the last chapter, God

told David, " I'm not going to

19

:

let you build a house for me.

20

:

Your son will."

21

:

Instead of David sulking and being

disappointed that he doesn't get to be

22

:

involved in the building project more or

choosing to leave all the work to his son,

23

:

he intentionally gathers materials that

will be used for the glory of the Lord.

24

:

He still works to provide everything

he can to bless and honor God.

25

:

I love what this shows us about David.

26

:

We also read that David has some judicial

roles as well, and that he continues

27

:

to reign with justice and equity.

28

:

Moving on to Second Samuel nine, it

reveals that all of this prosperity

29

:

did not go to David's head.

30

:

was still looking for how he

could bless the house of Saul.

31

:

And David said, Is there still anyone

left of the house of Saul, that I may

32

:

show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?

33

:

Now there was a servant in the

house of Saul, whose name was

34

:

Ziba, and they called him to David.

35

:

And the king said to him, Are you Ziba?

36

:

And he said, I am your servant.

37

:

And the king said, Is there not still

someone of the house of Saul, that I

38

:

may show the kindness of God to him?

39

:

Ziba said to the king, There

is still a son of Jonathan,

40

:

he is crippled in his feet.

41

:

The king said to him, Where is he?

42

:

And Ziba said to the king, He

is in the house of Maker, the

43

:

son of Amiel, At Lo-Deber.

44

:

Then King David sent and brought

him from the house of Maker,

45

:

the son of Amiel, at Lo-Deber.

46

:

And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan,

son of Saul, came to David and

47

:

fell on his face and paid homage.

48

:

And David said, Mephibosheth!

49

:

And he answered, Behold,

I am your servant.

50

:

David said to him, Do not fear, for I

will show you kindness for the sake of

51

:

your father Jonathan, and I will restore

to you all the land of Saul, your father.

52

:

And you shall eat at my table always.

53

:

And he paid homage and said, What

is your servant that you should show

54

:

regard for a dead dog such as I?

55

:

Mephibosheth probably thought that

David was going to kill him, even

56

:

though he was lame in his two feet.

57

:

Usually the descendants of the former

king could represent a threat, but

58

:

not only did David not lift his hand

against God's anointed, he actively

59

:

looked for ways to bless Saul's line.

60

:

Maybe you remember the covenant he

made to Jonathan that they would always

61

:

be faithful to each other's children.

62

:

Just think about your best friends.

63

:

If one of them passed away, wouldn't

it be such a delight to regularly be

64

:

in the presence of their children,

to see them grow, and to see the

65

:

likeness of your friend in them?

66

:

I love how David honors him.

67

:

I have to ask, though, because it's fresh

on my mind about Michael's character.

68

:

I'm just wondering why she never

thought to seek out her nephew.

69

:

Michael and Jonathan

were brother and sister.

70

:

Saul had four sons and several daughters.

71

:

Why wouldn't she have wondered

what happened to her nephew?

72

:

And why wouldn't she have looked for him?

73

:

He was five at the time of the accident,

and now he's married and has a son.

74

:

There's quite a passage of time.

75

:

It doesn't seem that David had to look too

hard to find him, and I'm just wondering,

76

:

was she so wrapped up in her own misery

that she wasn't thinking about her family?

77

:

I don't wanna read too much into

it, but I couldn't help but wonder

78

:

and Psalm 33 is so, so good.

79

:

So let's read it all.

80

:

Shout for joy in the

Lord, O you righteous.

81

:

Praise befits the upright.

82

:

Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre.

83

:

Make melody to him with

the harp of 10 strings.

84

:

Sing to him a new song.

85

:

Play skillfully on the

strings with loud shouts.

86

:

For the word of the Lord is upright, and

all his work is done in faithfulness.

87

:

He loves righteousness and justice.

88

:

The earth is full of the

steadfast love of the Lord.

89

:

By the word of the Lord the heavens

were made, and by the breath

90

:

of his mouth all their host.

91

:

He gathers the waters

of the sea as a heap.

92

:

He puts the deeps in storehouses.

93

:

Let all the earth fear the Lord.

94

:

Let all the inhabitants of

the world stand in awe of him.

95

:

For he spoke and it came to be.

96

:

He commanded and it stood firm.

97

:

The Lord brings the counsel

of the nations to nothing.

98

:

He frustrates the plans of the peoples.

99

:

The counsel of the Lord stands forever,

the plans of his heart to all generations.

100

:

Blessed is the nation whose God

is the Lord, the people whom

101

:

he has chosen as his heritage.

102

:

The Lord looks down from heaven.

103

:

He sees all the children of man.

104

:

From where he sits enthroned he looks

out on all the inhabitants of the

105

:

earth, he who fashions the hearts of

them all and observes all their deeds.

106

:

The king is not saved by his great army.

107

:

A warrior is not delivered

by his great strength.

108

:

The war horse is a false hope

for salvation, and by its

109

:

great might it cannot rescue.

110

:

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on

those who fear him, on those who

111

:

hope in his steadfast love That he

may deliver their soul from death

112

:

and keep them alive in famine.

113

:

Our soul waits for the Lord.

114

:

He is our help and our shield.

115

:

For our heart is glad in him,

because we trust in his holy name.

116

:

Let your steadfast love, O Lord,

be upon us, even as we hope in you.

117

:

That phrase from the first verse, " Praise

befits the upright," is something I've

118

:

really been trying to meditate on.

119

:

because if we walk in righteousness

and praise the Lord all the while,

120

:

it will help keep us humble and

give God the praise He deserves.

121

:

And if we hadn't been reading as quickly

through the Word as we have been, I don't

122

:

know if I would've noticed this, but I

keep seeing this four-fold description

123

:

of the Lord in the Psalms regarding

His steadfast love, His faithfulness,

124

:

His righteousness, and His justice.

125

:

That list was in four and five here,

and it stands out to me right now.

126

:

Because when we were reading in 2 Samuel,

God helps David have a lot of victory

127

:

in defeating the surrounding peoples.

128

:

And part of me feels like, whoa,

a lot of people are dying here.

129

:

I feel a little uncomfortable celebrating.

130

:

But I'm reminded as I turn to Psalms

that God loves righteousness and justice,

131

:

and that all His judgments are correct.

132

:

And if God helped David

defeat any of these nations,

133

:

it was the righteous choice.

134

:

In verse 13, He looks down from

heaven and sees the children of man.

135

:

Aren't you so glad that

God sees your kids?

136

:

And multiple times we were told that

God's eye is on those who fear Him.

137

:

This thread continues to be

woven throughout scripture.

138

:

It's good that we have a holy reverence

of the Lord, and that understanding

139

:

can prevent us from walking in sin.

140

:

Which is a perfect

transition to chapter 36.

141

:

It feels like the topic

shifts pretty radically.

142

:

Listen to see if you notice what I would

say is kind of a lack of a transition.

143

:

Transgression speaks to the

wicked, deep in his heart.

144

:

There is no fear of God before his eyes.

145

:

For he flatters himself in

his own eyes that his iniquity

146

:

cannot be found out and hated.

147

:

The words of his mouth

are trouble and deceit.

148

:

He has ceased to act wisely and do good.

149

:

He plots trouble while on his bed.

150

:

He sets himself in a way that is not good.

151

:

He does not reject evil.

152

:

Your steadfast love, O Lord,

extends to the heavens, your

153

:

faithfulness to the clouds.

154

:

Your righteousness is

like the mountains of God.

155

:

Your judgments are like the great deep.

156

:

Man and beast you save, O Lord.

157

:

How precious is your

steadfast love, O God.

158

:

The children of mankind take

refuge in the shadow of your wings.

159

:

They feast on the abundance of

your house, and you give them drink

160

:

from the river of your delights.

161

:

For with you is the fountain of life.

162

:

In your light do we see light.

163

:

Oh, continue your steadfast love

to those who know you and your

164

:

righteousness to the upright of heart.

165

:

Let not the foot of arrogance

come upon me, nor the hand

166

:

of the wicked drive me away.

167

:

There the evildoers lie fallen; they

are thrust down, unable to rise.

168

:

At the beginning, we saw how sin can

deceive us and take root in our hearts.

169

:

It was such a caution to me.

170

:

Can you think about the places

or the times that you struggle

171

:

with your thought life?

172

:

Speaker 18: Sometimes if I'm angry

at someone, then I get in the

173

:

shower, I'm like scrubbing the

shampoo like, "Err, err, err."

174

:

And I'm just mad.

175

:

Or if I'm cleaning my house and

scrubbing toilets and I'm frustrated

176

:

with someone, my thoughts are

just not honoring to the Lord.

177

:

I give myself over to cattiness.

178

:

And if I can choose to play worship music

instead, it's so much better for me.

179

:

Speaker 19: I think it's interesting

how this psalm begins talking about

180

:

how unhealthy it is to dwell in sin,

181

:

Speaker 18: And then it transitions into

focusing how great God's character is.

182

:

And when we're praising Him,

It becomes so hard to dwell

183

:

in our own sin, doesn't it?

184

:

Speaker 19: It concludes reminding

us that God sees our kids, and that

185

:

when we take refuge in Him, we have

abundance and delight in His presence.

186

:

So we don't really need to dwell

on any way that we've been wronged

187

:

or the shortcomings of others or the

things we're upset about, because

188

:

we have so many reasons to praise.

189

:

Heavenly Father, we thank

You for more evidence of Your

190

:

character and Your perfection.

191

:

Not only are You righteous, but everything

You do is righteous, and that's not

192

:

limited to the times we're reading about.

193

:

It's true now and in our lives.

194

:

Thank You that Your eyes are on our

children and on the righteous, and we

195

:

ask that You would help us to dwell with

You, letting You transform our hearts

196

:

in the midst of all circumstances.

197

:

I pray that when there is sin in our

hearts, that we would cast it off

198

:

and choose to worship You instead.

199

:

give us wisdom in how to

train our children to have a

200

:

reverent honor and fear of You.

201

:

Thank You that we can hope in Your

steadfast, never-ceasing love.

202

:

As we read that praise befits

the upright, we choose to give

203

:

You glory in all circumstances.

204

:

It is in the most worthy name that we

could utter, Jesus Christ, that we pray.

205

:

Amen.
