Speaker:
00:00:02
What was the best decision you made this year?
Speaker:
00:00:06
Think a moment about it.
Speaker:
00:00:09
I bet you chose a decision that led to a great outcome.
Speaker:
00:00:15
Didn't you?
Speaker:
00:00:16
Well, so did I, when I was being asked that same question by Annie Duke
Speaker:
00:00:22
while reading her book “Thinking in Bets”., In fact, everyone does it.
Speaker:
00:00:27
It's due to what Annie Duke calls resulting.
Speaker:
00:00:32
Resulting is the term that she uses to describe what happens when we
Speaker:
00:00:37
evaluate a decision from its outcome.
Speaker:
00:00:40
After all, when the outcome was great it must have been a great decision, right?
Speaker:
00:00:46
But that take ignores luck and, of course, bad luck.
Speaker:
00:00:50
Because what if the great outcome was due much more to luck than
Speaker:
00:00:56
to the quality of your decision.
Speaker:
00:00:58
Take, for example, hiring.
Speaker:
00:01:01
Hiring your best employee has as much to do with her applying as it has to do
Speaker:
00:01:08
with you choosing her over someone else.
Speaker:
00:01:12
That she applied in the first place had nothing to do with how you decided,
Speaker:
00:01:18
but it influenced the outcome heavily.
Speaker:
00:01:21
It's just as likely that another decision of yours didn't turn
Speaker:
00:01:26
out so well because of bad luck.
Speaker:
00:01:30
She actually was the best candidate.
Speaker:
00:01:32
But nobody, including you and her, could have predicted that she would be
Speaker:
00:01:38
diagnosed with cancer two weeks after.
Speaker:
00:01:42
Once you see this, you can’t unsee it anymore.
Speaker:
00:01:46
The quality of a decision is not the same thing as the quality of its outcome.
So, once again:
00:01:53
What was the best decision you made this year?
So, once again:
00:02:01
Can you think of a situation where you feel like you made a good decision, even
So, once again:
00:02:05
though the outcome wasn't that good?
So, once again:
00:02:09
Or how about the opposite?
So, once again:
00:02:12
And after reflecting on these questions, what can you learn from
So, once again:
00:02:16
that for your upcoming decisions?
