Steph:

Welcome to The Dwelling Place from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

Yesterday we saw some nuance, but

today in one Samuel 13 through 16,

4

:

there's going to be a little debate

about the true character of Kings Saul.

5

:

chapter 13, Begins with some

dating about Saul's reign.

6

:

It's a little confusing, but

thankfully we have Acts:

7

:

To clarify that Saul reigned 40 years

over Israel, it seems it didn't take

8

:

long for him to begin ruling without

listening and obeying the Lord.

9

:

It reminds me of Adam and Eve's

quick decline in the garden.

10

:

, Speaker 19: In

11

:

Steph: chapter 13, The Philistines are

gathered to fight against Israel again.

12

:

They were excellent with working with

iron, and have a ton of iron chariots.

13

:

they carefully kept this skill

close to the chest so their enemies

14

:

wouldn't be able to replicate it.

15

:

Their iron weapons are stronger

than Israel's bronze ones,

16

:

and Saul is intimidated.

17

:

He is supposed to wait for Samuel to

come and sacrifice the burnt offerings

18

:

before the battle, but after a week,

he gets impatient and does it himself,

19

:

and as soon as he does so Samuel shows up.

20

:

This is no small mistake, as Samuel

tells him, you have done foolishly, you

21

:

have not kept the command of the Lord

your God with which he commanded you

22

:

for, then the Lord would've established

your kingdom over Israel forever.

23

:

But now your kingdom shall not continue.

24

:

The Lord has sought out a man after his

own heart, and the Lord has commanded him

25

:

to be prince over his people because you

have not kept what the Lord commanded you.

26

:

Next, Jonathan, the son of Saul

with his armor bear, has gone to

27

:

defeat some of the Philistines.

28

:

Saul doesn't realize he's gone and

he's away from camp when Saul makes

29

:

a rash oath saying, cursed be the man

who eats food before it is evening,

30

:

and I am avenged on my enemies.

31

:

So none of the people eats.

32

:

If there's anything a mom knows, you've

gotta set your kids up for success.

33

:

If you send them off to do

anything when they're starving,

34

:

it's not going to go well.

35

:

How much more for men who are going

into battle, Jonathan returns and

36

:

seeing some honeycomb eats it.

37

:

He's like, come on, you guys.

38

:

This really helped me.

39

:

But they say no.

40

:

Your father said we'd be cursed if we ate.

41

:

He tells them my dad had a bad idea, and

we'd win by a lot more if he let you eat.

42

:

But even in the midst of Saul's

sin, the Lord is gracious to Israel.

43

:

He sets the Philistines strong

iron weapons into confusion so that

44

:

many actually defeat each other.

45

:

The Israelites are

ravenous after the battle.

46

:

So much so that they take up the

spoil, slaughtering animals and

47

:

eating them in their own blood.

48

:

We know from Leviticus that

they were not to do so.

49

:

Saul's foolishness actually led

his people into sin, but then

50

:

he builds an altar to the Lord.

51

:

It's debatable what his real motives

are, but upon inquiring of the Lord.

52

:

God doesn't answer.

53

:

Saul concludes one of

you must have sinned.

54

:

And it comes to light that it was his son,

Jonathan, And reminiscent of Jeff the

55

:

in the book of judges with the horrible

vow he made regarding his daughter.

56

:

Saul says, I guess Jonathan,

you're gonna have to die.

57

:

but the people will have nothing of it.

58

:

And in 1545 they say, shall Jonathan die?

59

:

Who has worked this great

salvation in Israel?

60

:

Far from it.

61

:

As the Lord lives, there shall not one

hair of his head fall to the ground

62

:

for he has worked with God this day.

63

:

So the people ransom to

Jonathan so that he did not die.

64

:

In chapter 15, Samuel tells Saul that

the Lord has determined to devote

65

:

the Amalekites to destruction for

the way they treated the Israelites

66

:

as they were leaving Egypt.

67

:

Hospitality is so important to our God.

68

:

The Amalekites, were an evil people

and God commanded that every living

69

:

thing, human and animal be destroyed.

70

:

In verse eight, Saul takes

71

:

Speaker 19: egg,

72

:

Steph: egg, the king of the Amalekites,

alive and devoted to destruction all

73

:

the people with the edge of the sword.

74

:

But Saul and the people spared

75

:

Speaker 19: egg,

76

:

Steph: egg.

77

:

And the best of the sheep and the

oxen and of the fat and calves and

78

:

the lambs and all that was good

and would not utterly destroy them.

79

:

All that was despised and worthless.

80

:

They devoted to destruction.

81

:

Unfortunately, everything that

looked good to the eyes, he kept The

82

:

word of the Lord comes to Samuel.

83

:

I regret that I have made Saul King for

he has turned back from following me

84

:

and has not performed my commandments.

85

:

And Samuel was angry and

cried to the Lord all night.

86

:

God's regret doesn't mean that

he didn't know what would happen.

87

:

It means that he will stop giving

Saul favor to rule over the people.

88

:

Samuel goes to Saul, and shockingly Saul

says to him, blessed be you to the Lord.

89

:

I have performed the

commandment of the Lord.

90

:

The word command relates to the

voice of the Lord and the word Shama

91

:

that we studied in Deuteronomy,

meaning to listen and obey.

92

:

So it's perfectly fitting.

93

:

When Samuel issues a word play, as

he says, what then is this bleeding

94

:

of the sheep in my ears and the

lowing of the oxen that I hear?

95

:

Samuel attempts to defend himself

saying they were all for a sacrifice,

96

:

but Samuel silences him.

97

:

Saying, has the Lord as great delight

in burnt offerings and sacrifices

98

:

as in obeying the voice of the Lord.

99

:

Behold to obey is better than sacrifice

and to listen than the fat of Rams.

100

:

Saul admits his sinfulness

101

:

and begs that Samuel will return with him.

102

:

He's afraid for the people to

realize that he has lost the Lord.

103

:

And Samuel's.

104

:

Favor.

105

:

But Samuel denies him saying, the

Lord has rejected you and so do I.

106

:

As he turns to go away, Saul seizes

the skirt of his robe and it tears, and

107

:

Samuel takes the opportunity to tell him

the Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel

108

:

from you this day and has given it to a

neighbor of yours who is better than you.

109

:

And finally, Sal says, return with me

that I may bow before the Lord your God.

110

:

After all this, Saul doesn't

call him the Lord, my God.

111

:

and that's perhaps the most

revealing line we read.

112

:

We have walked through a lot of scripture

so far together, about 300 chapters.

113

:

Is there any doubt in your mind that

God cares about obedience at this point?

114

:

He does want it to come from a love of

him, but he certainly cares that we obey

115

:

and godly parents help their kids do this.

116

:

I know how countercultural that

is right now, but the time tested

117

:

truth of God's word reminds us

over and over that this matters.

118

:

So it's no wonder that the

Lord chooses another king.

119

:

He won't reign immediately, but

he has promised the kingship.

120

:

In 16, one, the Lord said to

Samuel, how long will you grieve

121

:

over Saul since I have rejected

him from being king over Israel?

122

:

Fill your horn with oil and go.

123

:

I will send you to Jesse the

Bethlehemite for I have provided

124

:

for myself a king among his sons.

125

:

And in verse six, when

they came, he looked on.

126

:

A lie up and thought, surely the Lord's

anointed is before him, but the Lord

127

:

said to Samuel, do not look on his

appearance or on the height of his

128

:

stature because I have rejected him.

129

:

For the Lord sees not as man sees.

130

:

Man looks on the outward appearance,

but the Lord looks on the heart.

131

:

Then Jesse called a beda and made

him pass before Samuel and he said,

132

:

neither has the Lord chosen this one.

133

:

Then Jesse made

134

:

Shama passed by and he said, neither

has the Lord chosen this one.

135

:

And Jesse made seven of his sons

pass before Samuel and Samuel said to

136

:

Jesse, the Lord has not chosen these.

137

:

Then Samuel said to Jesse,

Are all your sons here?

138

:

And he said, there remains

yet the youngest, but behold,

139

:

he's keeping the sheep.

140

:

And Samuel said to Jesse, send and get him

for, we will not sit down till he comes

141

:

here and he scent and brought him in.

142

:

Now he was ruddy and had

beautiful eyes and was handsome,

143

:

and the Lord said, arise.

144

:

Anoint him for this is he.

145

:

Then Samuel took the horn of oil

and anointed him in the midst of

146

:

his brothers, and the spirit of the

Lord rushed upon David from that day

147

:

forward, now the spirit of the Lord

departed from Saul and a harmful

148

:

spirit from the Lord tormented him.

149

:

One of Saul's servants recommends

that he have music played for him.

150

:

They say we know a son of Jesse,

who is skillful in playing a

151

:

man of valor, a man of war,

152

:

Speaker 16: prudent in speech,

153

:

Steph: And a man of good presence,

and the Lord is with him.

154

:

And David comes, the chapter

concludes Whenever the harmful spirit

155

:

from God was upon Saul, David took

156

:

Speaker 19: the liar.

157

:

Steph: And played it with his hand.

158

:

So Saul was refreshed and was well, and

the harmful spirit departed from him.

159

:

I've always been told that if I ever sense

spiritual warfare, I should play and sing

160

:

worship music, and I'm wondering if this

is the biblical basis for the fact that

161

:

the enemy hates the praise of the Lord.

162

:

In any case, I know the Lord loves

it, and it's always helped me

163

:

contend for peace in those moments.

164

:

The Lord is looking for a

man after his own heart.

165

:

King David will not be a perfect servant

of the Lord, but the trajectory of his

166

:

life will be a humble pursuit of God.

167

:

Every time I read this, I'm shocked

that his father doesn't even bring

168

:

him in from the fields to appear.

169

:

David was completely

dismissed by his family.

170

:

Not only at that moment, but even as he's

anointed king, he's still sent out to

171

:

Speaker 19: work the fields and

172

:

Steph: be a shepherd.

173

:

God used all of this for his good, but

I'm amazed that even Saul servants are

174

:

aware of the character and skill of David.

175

:

Did this happen after the spirit of

the Lord came upon him, or did he have

176

:

an amazing reputation before that?

177

:

If you've ever felt dismissed by

your family or by those closest to

178

:

you, you know how painful it is.

179

:

But we can tell from David's life

that being rejected, dismissed, or

180

:

overlooked by man has no indication

of your worth before the Lord.

181

:

May we be godly parents that see

the hope and the potential of

182

:

what God wants to do in our kids.

183

:

Let's pray.

184

:

Heavenly Father, we're reminded

today how important obedience is

185

:

to you, that you are honored and

delighted when we take steps to follow

186

:

you especially when it comes from a

deep love and desire to please you.

187

:

We pray we would be quick to follow after

you setting that example for our kids.

188

:

Guide us to be faithful to

require obedience of them in the

189

:

small things so they're ready

to obey you in the big things.

190

:

May we train them to be respectful of

authority because it matters to you,

191

:

and I pray we would live lives of

worship because you deserve all the

192

:

glory and that's where the victory is.

193

:

When we've been overlooked and rejected,

heal the lies and help us to believe

194

:

that your plans to glorify yourself.

195

:

Include us.

196

:

We love you, Jesus, and

we lift your name high.

197

:

Amen.
