:

You will never, ever read a newspaper headline that accurately accuses

2

:

Jesus of not being who He says He is.

3

:

You will never commit a sin that

Jesus' blood can't cover, and you

4

:

will never face a tragedy so severe

that God can't make good come from it.

5

:

This is The Dwelling Place

from Entrusted Ministries.

6

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

7

:

Today, as we grieve over the sin of our

beloved David, we'll rejoice at the

8

:

unfailing, spotless Lamb, Jesus Christ.

9

:

We're reading Second Samuel chapters

eleven through twelve, which

10

:

correspond to First Chronicles

twenty, and then we'll briefly look

11

:

At Psalm sixty-nine and seventy.

12

:

This is not an episode that you'd

want to listen to with your kids.

13

:

As I read portions of Second

Samuel eleven, I want you

14

:

listening for a key verb.

15

:

The word sent occurs over and over,

which indicates that David's sin

16

:

is premeditated, there were many

opportunities for him to turn back.

17

:

Beginning in eleven:one.

18

:

In the spring of the year, the time

when kings go out to battle, David

19

:

sent Joab and his servants with him

and all Israel, and they ravaged

20

:

the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah.

21

:

But David remained at Jerusalem.

22

:

It happened late one afternoon, when

David arose from his couch and was walking

23

:

on the roof of the king's house, that

he saw from the roof a woman bathing;

24

:

and the woman was very beautiful.

25

:

And David sent and

inquired about the woman.

26

:

And one said, " Is not this

Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam,

27

:

the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"

28

:

So David sent messengers and took her,

and she came to him, and he lay with her.

29

:

Now she had been purifying

herself from her uncleanness.

30

:

Then she returned to her house.

31

:

And the woman conceived, and she sent

and told David, " I am pregnant."

32

:

So David sent word to Joab,

" Send me Uriah the Hittite."

33

:

and Joab sent Uriah to David.

34

:

Right from the beginning, David

was not where he should have been.

35

:

He should have engaged in

battle just like his men.

36

:

Instead, he was at home and

probably bored, which led to

37

:

him falling into temptation.

38

:

Bathsheba was purifying herself

after her menstrual cycle.

39

:

This is important because it reveals that

she was not pregnant from her husband.

40

:

And here I know I'm going

to get really delicate.

41

:

Some people believe that

David raped Bathsheba.

42

:

I've read and prayed a lot about this.

43

:

It's not the conclusion that I

would make, but I realize it

44

:

would've been very intimidating for

Bathsheba to say no to the king.

45

:

There are several occurrences

of rape in scripture.

46

:

We're actually going to see

one in the next episode.

47

:

And in each instance it is called rape,

48

:

but the word here is different.

49

:

God never condemns

Bathsheba in the account,

50

:

and I think that she suffered greatly at

the multifaceted sin that David committed.

51

:

He thought he could commit a secret

sin, but now he knows it will be public.

52

:

And the consequence

for adultery was death.

53

:

He sends for Uriah hoping that Uriah will

go home and lay with his wife but Uriah

54

:

says, "I can't go sleep with my wife when

all of these men are on the battlefield."

55

:

That's exactly how David should have

felt at the beginning of the chapter.

56

:

Uriah seems to be a man

of integrity and honor.

57

:

And despite multiple attempts,

David can't get him to give in.

58

:

So he decides to do the unimaginable,

forcing Joab to make Uriah vulnerable

59

:

on the battlefield so that he dies.

60

:

We don't know what would have happened

if at any moment David would have

61

:

stopped and asked the Lord to intervene.

62

:

There still would have been

consequences for his sin, but he

63

:

kept making it worse and worse.

64

:

Let's pick back up at the

end of chapter eleven.

65

:

When the wife of Uriah heard that

Uriah her husband was dead, she

66

:

lamented over her husband.

67

:

And when the mourning was over, David

sent and brought her to his house, and

68

:

she became his wife and bore him a son.

69

:

But the thing that David had

done displeased the Lord.

70

:

In the eyes of everyone else, this might

have seemed like an honorable, merciful

71

:

thing, that he would care for a widow.

72

:

But God knew the truth.

73

:

Chapter twelve, tenderly displays

God's heart for this righteous man.

74

:

It makes me think of

Psalm one sixteen fifteen.

75

:

Precious in the sight of the

Lord is the death of his saints.

76

:

And even if David is his anointed,

77

:

he is not exempt from consequences.

78

:

And the Lord sent Nathan to David.

79

:

He came to him and said to him,

There were two men in a certain city,

80

:

the one rich and the other poor.

81

:

The rich man had very many flocks and

herds, but the poor man had nothing but

82

:

one little ewe lamb, which he had bought.

83

:

And he brought it up, and it grew

up with him and with his children.

84

:

It used to eat of his morsel and drink

from his cup and lie in his arms,

85

:

and it was like a daughter to him.

86

:

Now there came a traveler to the rich

man, and he was unwilling to take one

87

:

of his own flock or herd to prepare

for the guest who had come to him.

88

:

But he took the poor man's

lamb and prepared it for

89

:

the man who had come to him.

90

:

Then David's anger was greatly kindled

against the man, and he said to Nathan,

91

:

Steph: As the Lord lives, this man

who has done this deserves to die.

92

:

And he shall restore the lamb

fourfold, because he did this

93

:

thing and because he had no pity."

94

:

Speaker 27: nathan said

to David, You are the man.

95

:

Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,

I anointed you king over Israel, and I

96

:

delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

97

:

And I gave you your master's house and

your master's wives into your arms, and

98

:

gave you the house of Israel and of Judah.

99

:

And if this were too little, I

would add to you as much more.

100

:

Why have you despised the word of the

Lord to do what is evil in his sight?

101

:

You have struck down Uriah the Hittite

with the sword, and have taken his

102

:

wife to be your wife, and have killed

him with the sword of the Ammonites.

103

:

" Now therefore, the sword shall never

depart from your house, because you have

104

:

despised me, and have taken the wife

of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.

105

:

Thus says the Lord, ' Behold, I will

raise up evil against you out of your

106

:

own house, and I will take your wives

before your eyes and give them to

107

:

your neighbor, and he shall lie with

your wives in the sight of this son.

108

:

For you did it secretly, but I

will do this thing before all

109

:

Israel and before the sun.'

110

:

David said to Nathan, ' I

have sinned against the Lord.'

111

:

And Nathan said to David, ' The

Lord also has put away your sin.

112

:

You shall not die.

113

:

Nevertheless, because by this deed

you have utterly scorned the Lord, the

114

:

child who is born to you shall die.'"

115

:

David weeps and prays and refuses

to eat, asking God to be gracious.

116

:

But after seven days, the child dies.

117

:

It's then that David gets up,

eats, washes, and worships,

118

:

and this confuses his servants.

119

:

But David tells them something that can

bring us so much hope why should I fast?

120

:

Can I bring him back again?

121

:

I shall go to him, but he

will not return to me."

122

:

This is one of the key scriptures

that tells us that the Lord has

123

:

a place for children in heaven.

124

:

And even though it is such a sorrowful

story, David knew he would be

125

:

re-reunited with this child in eternity.

126

:

If you've experienced the pain

of losing a child, I hope you can

127

:

find encouragement through this.

128

:

And in verse twenty-four, we're

told that David comforted his wife

129

:

Bathsheba and went into her and

lay with her, and she bore a son,

130

:

and he called his name Solomon.

131

:

And the Lord loved him

132

:

Steph: We'll cover David's

psalms of repentance tomorrow.

133

:

Speaker 27: I know it's so difficult to

read these stories how could a man who

134

:

honored the Lord in so many ways have

fallen into such grievous temptation?

135

:

But it's encouraging for two reasons.

136

:

First, because there's nothing that

you've done or that I've done that

137

:

can separate us from the love of God.

138

:

David's sin is heinous, but it's

not beyond the blood of Jesus

139

:

and his sacrifice on the cross.

140

:

Secondly, every chapter of

scripture can point us to the

141

:

perfection of Jesus Christ.

142

:

When David was at his best defeating

Goliath, we were reminded that Jesus

143

:

is victorious over every enemy.

144

:

now that David has fallen, we can

rejoice that Jesus is victorious

145

:

in the face of temptation.

146

:

But what about sweet Bathsheba, who

has now lost a husband and a son?

147

:

We'll continue to talk about the

ways the Lord redeemed her story.

148

:

But I would venture to say that David

truly repented and grieved before

149

:

her, and I think they had a chance

for restoration in their marriage.

150

:

Not only that, Bathsheba gets to

become the mother of the wisest human

151

:

king that ever lived, and to be named

in the genealogy of the Messiah.

152

:

Some even believe that the

Proverbs 31 woman was something

153

:

that she taught to Solomon.

154

:

God also honored Uriah.

155

:

Matthew chapter 1 in the genealogy

of Jesus, verse six tells

156

:

us, " and David was the father

of Solomon by the wife of Uriah."

157

:

Even in the midst of this heartbreaking

story, God had a way to honor Bathsheba

158

:

and to honor Uriah through it.

159

:

Uriah's life on this earth

may have been cut short,

160

:

but God spared him with eternity.

161

:

Speaker 28: And if He can bring good

from even this tragic situation, is

162

:

any circumstance too difficult for Him?

163

:

Absolutely not.

164

:

Let's quickly look at Psalm 69 and 70.

165

:

A verse that stands out to me,

'cause it's so not what my flesh

166

:

would like to say, is 69:13.

167

:

" But as for me, my prayer

is to you, O Lord.

168

:

At an acceptable time, O God, in the

abundance of your steadfast love,

169

:

answer me in your saving faithfulness.

170

:

Did you hear the patience?

171

:

At an acceptable time, answer me.

172

:

I need to pray that way more often.

173

:

But as I turn to Psalm 70, I'm

encouraged that God is okay even

174

:

when our prayers are impatient.

175

:

Because verse one says, " Make

haste, O God, to deliver me.

176

:

O Lord, make haste to help me."

177

:

And I think this could almost

be translated, "Hurry up, Daddy.

178

:

Hurry up."

179

:

This is the prayer of an

impatient child expectantly

180

:

waiting for their father to act.

181

:

I'm grateful for a God that

receives both types of prayers.

182

:

Heavenly Father, we praise

you for the righteous, perfect

183

:

example of Jesus Christ.

184

:

And even though every hero we read about

in scripture, and throughout history

185

:

will disappoint us if we dig deep enough,

we're confident that Jesus never will.

186

:

In the midst of all of our fears,

and our expectations, you are still

187

:

worthy of all of our hope and trust.

188

:

Thank you that when we repent before you,

you can redeem even our worst mistakes.

189

:

So we pray for that

redemption today, Lord.

190

:

If there's any sin left unconfessed,

bring it to our minds now.

191

:

We lay it at your feet, Jesus,

and thank you that we never have

192

:

to pick up that burden again.

193

:

We plead that even in our worst moments,

you would allow us to bring you glory.

194

:

Thank you for your blood, Jesus

Which thoroughly covers us.

195

:

Amen.
