Speaker:Please enjoy “Forever Forever Forever”
Speaker:by Dirt Coyote The grass crackled like glass with
Speaker:every footstep Cody took onto the empty football field.
Speaker:Each white line of the gridiron
Speaker:already fading into the night.
Speaker:A puff of cloudy air exhaled out of the wolf's muzzle as he sighed.
Speaker:It was one heck of a year.
Speaker:Despite winning the game, his team,
Speaker:the Greenpark Loggers,
Speaker:was last in the division and wouldn't be moving
Speaker:any further for the semester.
Speaker:Heck, this was probably the last time he'd
Speaker:ever step out onto the field.
Speaker:He didn't see himself pursuing football in college,
Speaker:not that community would have a team.
Speaker:He got his one win as starting quarterback
Speaker:and he did it with the whole support of his team.
Speaker:He couldn't have asked for more.
Speaker:"Cody!" A voice rang out from the eerie silence of the empty stands.
Speaker:The wolf turned, put on a smile,
Speaker:and faced the panther running towards him in his own letterman jacket.
Speaker:He almost didn't brace himself in time as the cat darted across the field and
Speaker:into his arms. They spun around in circles,
Speaker:the jock lifting the other teen off the ground.
Speaker:His warm neck nuzzled into his shoulder the entire way.
Speaker:When they'd gotten dangerously close to toppling over,
Speaker:Cody sat him back down on his feet.
Speaker:Their eyes met, both holding onto wide smiles until their instincts became too much to hold back.
Speaker:They locked their muzzles into a
Speaker:long passionate kiss, taking in their scents
Speaker:and the cold night air.
Speaker:It was the first time they'd done it
Speaker:so open, and even in an empty field,
Speaker:this one felt special.
Speaker:"You did it!" Becker shouted, following with a peck to his cheek.
Speaker:"You did it! You did it! You did it!"
Speaker:Cody nodded his head up and down sheepishly,
Speaker:paw to the back of his head.
Speaker:"I know. I know," he replied,
Speaker:although there were so many things that he could have meant,
Speaker:he wasn’t sure what he was responding to.
Speaker:Becker's tail lashed about behind him,
Speaker:something he couldn't contain when he got this excited.
Speaker:"I told you your team would support you and they did.
Speaker:Even Drake had your back.
Speaker:And you won the game!
Speaker:I always believed in you.
Speaker:you." He did. It was a month ago, though
Speaker:it felt like years now,
Speaker:when the first rumors went around that he was gay.
Speaker:Cody tried so hard to keep it a secret,
Speaker:tried to squash down
Speaker:everything said behind his back.
Speaker:He'd even gotten physical with his best friend, Drake,
Speaker:just to try to keep things from getting out.
Speaker:Of course, Becker told him that the team wouldn't care,
Speaker:just needed to know that he trusted them.
Speaker:“You were right about that,
Speaker:and I’ve never felt closer to them
Speaker:than I do now. Thanks,”
Speaker:Cody said. Though he did mean it,
Speaker:he couldn’t help but look toward the empty stands.
Speaker:His smile faltered a bit,
Speaker:but he tried to hold onto it for his panther’s sake.
Speaker:Becker saw through him
Speaker:immediately. "They'll come around. They're your family.
Speaker:They have to come around.
Speaker:around." Cody’s lupine muzzle dipped,
Speaker:the wound still fresh.
Speaker:They'd been caught kissing a week ago by his dad,
Speaker:and then was promptly thrown out.
Speaker:He had thought they would have come to the game anyways,
Speaker:always adamant about saving face.
Speaker:Guess not this time.
Speaker:Becker rested a paw on his shoulder,
Speaker:and Cody did his best not to wince.
Speaker:He didn't want anyone to see how bad that last hit was,
Speaker:the one where he tucked the football under his arm and went straight into the line.
Speaker:Even with all the padding, the Elk he forced back really nailed him.
Speaker:Through it all though,
Speaker:he managed to push the ball forward and
Speaker:score the game winning touchdown.
Speaker:That though relieved
Speaker:some of the tension,
Speaker:and he turned back to his panther.
Speaker:"You're usually about these things.
Speaker:You've always been the smarter one," he conceded.
Speaker:"Mom says that you can stay however
Speaker:long you want. Heck, she can even get you a job at her warehouse until you get back on your feet.
Speaker:She's practically in love with you,"
Speaker:he said, and to lighten up the situation, he added,
Speaker:"I should really watch out for her.
Speaker:her." Cody's muzzle twisted into a mock frown and he stuck his tongue out.
Speaker:"Don't make it weird.
Speaker:You know you're the only cat in my life.
Speaker:life." The panther playfully slugged his shoulder, something that
Speaker:he hated Cody doing back.
Speaker:But it was enough to let him know that he cared and
Speaker:would always be there for him.
Speaker:Even though they were about to be separated by hundreds of miles.
Speaker:That thought came to mind and
Speaker:his ears folded back.
Speaker:"It'll be hard though,
Speaker:with you going to UC Golden in the fall.
Speaker:At least we'll have a few months together,"
Speaker:Cody said, scratching a paw to the back of his head to cover up his disappointment.
Speaker:It took some growing up,
Speaker:but he’d finally come to terms with Becker’s decision to leave state for school.
Speaker:Asking him to change schools was cublike,
Speaker:and he felt bad he did it to begin with.
Speaker:Becker grinned slyly,
Speaker:and Cody knew something was up before he even said it.
Speaker:His ears went up just as the feline started with,
Speaker:"Actually—" "Don't tell me you're—"
Speaker:"I think I heard University of Greenpark has a developing CS department,"
Speaker:Becker interrupted casually.
Speaker:Cody furrowed his brow,
Speaker:and though he was happy,
Speaker:he couldn't help but feel a little guilty.
Speaker:"Don't do this for me. UC Golden is an opportunity of a lifetime.
Speaker:It'll only be a few years and
Speaker:I can eventually work my way out there,"
Speaker:he said, but didn't truly believe his words.
Speaker:Becker just shook his head,
Speaker:smile still on his muzzle,
Speaker:"It's already done.
Speaker:They were my backup anyways,
Speaker:so it's not too big a deal.
Speaker:deal." Tears ran down the side of the wolf's muzzle.
Speaker:He thought this might've been over,
Speaker:and now they were
Speaker:truly going to stay together.
Speaker:With so much emotions building up, he took a deep breath,
Speaker:reached down into his pocket, and got down onto a knee.
Speaker:"Cody?" the panther whispered,
Speaker:eyes wide. This was why he wanted him
Speaker:to meet him on the field after the game.
Speaker:Even if their team had lost, he'd go through with it.
Speaker:Even if Becker was still going to UC Golden,
Speaker:he had planned this.
Speaker:He looked up into his boyfriend's eyes and
Speaker:pulled out his high school ring.
Speaker:"Lance Becker Adams,
Speaker:we've been doing this together in secret
Speaker:for two years now.
Speaker:It’s been fucking crazy, with ups and down.
Speaker:I don't want to keep us hidden
Speaker:anymore,” he paused before adding, “I—
Speaker:I’ve lost so much to get here,
Speaker:but I don’t ever want to lose you.
Speaker:Would you—?" "Yes!" the panther shouted through tears.
Speaker:It was good that he interrupted him,
Speaker:cause the big speech he had planned out was falling apart anyways.
Speaker:All he wanted to hear
Speaker:was that word. With that,
Speaker:he slipped his ring
Speaker:onto the panther's finger.
Speaker:His own tears ran down the sides of his muzzle,
Speaker:and though they stung,
Speaker:he couldn't be happier.
Speaker:Cody asked in shaky words,
Speaker:"Forever?" "Forever." Forever. *****
Speaker:Mistakes had been made.
Speaker:Not just a decade ago,
Speaker:but the night prior for sure.
Speaker:Cody knew that before he even opened his eyes.
Speaker:He knew it before his arm rolled over to the side
Speaker:only to land on a short furred back.
Speaker:Immediately, he pulled it away,
Speaker:scooching to his side of the bed.
Speaker:Well, it wasn't his side of the bed anymore.
Speaker:Now it just was just his bed.
Speaker:He threw up the sheets as quietly as possible,
Speaker:carefully wiggling his way off.
Speaker:The motion pinched his shoulder,
Speaker:the football injury that
Speaker:never seemed to heal correctly.
Speaker:Still, he bore the pain just to leave the bed
Speaker:without waking up Becker.
Speaker:He needed coffee.
Speaker:Cody rubbed the sand out of his eyes,
Speaker:only to knock into a box laying out in the hall.
Speaker:His footpaw went into it with a thud,
Speaker:thankfully only filled with clothes
Speaker:rather than something that would make a lot of noise.
Speaker:If he ran into Becker's fucking figurine set,
Speaker:he'd be sure to have him pull out every single one just to check for damages.
Speaker:He pushed the box just out of the way so he wouldn't hit it again.
Speaker:Of course, there was a maze of cardboard leading all the way to the kitchen.
Speaker:For as smart as he brags, Becker had the organizational skills of a cub.
Speaker:It used to be enduring at some point:
Speaker:times where Cody would clean up the panther’s desk because he knew his husband wouldn’t be able to find
Speaker:anything under stacks of soda cans.
Speaker:Not so much anymore.
Speaker:The very first thing he noticed when he walked into the kitchen
Speaker:was the lack of a coffee maker.
Speaker:"Son of a bitch," he muttered out,
Speaker:and when he thought about it,
Speaker:he actually meant it.
Speaker:Cody looked over
Speaker:at a box on top of the island countertop.
Speaker:Kitchen supplies.
Speaker:He could understand the blender, the food processor, the expensive knives,
Speaker:and even half of the dishes.
Speaker:He didn't cook much for himself,
Speaker:so there'd be no doubt
Speaker:packaged noodles were gonna make up the
Speaker:majority of his meals in the coming months.
Speaker:But the coffee maker?
Speaker:It was only twenty bucks when he first bought it,
Speaker:but Cody did buy it.
Speaker:Didn't matter who used it more.
Speaker:He'd bought it when he was working late night shifts in the warehouse.
Speaker:Cody still worked late evenings,
Speaker:a bartender now, and would occasionally want a coffee.
Speaker:Not nearly as much when he was slugging around boxes for that
Speaker:awful woman. It was
Speaker:petty, but Becker could buy his own fucking coffee machine.
Speaker:With his claw, he ran through the tape over the top of the box.
Speaker:The pounding hangover spurred him on,
Speaker:tossing the paper buffer onto the countertop carelessly until
Speaker:he found what he was looking for.
Speaker:He set it up, pulling out a filter and pouring in his cheap
Speaker:dollar store coffee into it.
Speaker:Of course, Becker left him that.
Speaker:He was always complaining that the cheap stuff was inferior,
Speaker:but Cody couldn't taste the difference with the cream and sugar.
Speaker:His husband— ex-husband
Speaker:could never understand the value of a dollar.
Speaker:The pot was filling just as he heard the sound of someone stumbling out into the hall.
Speaker:Cody leaned his back against the cupboard, something he'd
Speaker:gotten used to when
Speaker:an impending fight was coming.
Speaker:And sure enough, as soon as the panther came around the corner,
Speaker:he was already speaking.
Speaker:"Please tell me what happened last night,
Speaker:didn't actually happen,"
Speaker:Becker said with a paw over his forehead,
Speaker:no doubt sporting the same hangover.
Speaker:Cody crossed his arms,
Speaker:brow furrowed. "Why do you do that?
Speaker:Always point out the obvious so it's
Speaker:more awkward than it already is?"
Speaker:It must've been
Speaker:pretty early in the morning,
Speaker:the feline keeping his maw shut for a second
Speaker:as he thought of a response.
Speaker:He'd almost thought he wouldn't have anything for him,
Speaker:but of course, Becker always had a bullet
Speaker:in the chamber. "Because some people
Speaker:like talking about things.
Speaker:Like why the hell did you take the coffee maker out?"
Speaker:"My coffee maker. I bought it.
Speaker:Doesn't matter who used it more.
Speaker:It's mine," Cody said,
Speaker:and immediately felt like a fucking cub for saying it.
Speaker:His lupine ears folded back,
Speaker:and he shook his head as he sighed.
Speaker:"You're free to a cup."
Speaker:"Is it—" "It's the cheap shit.
Speaker:You can keep all of your beans,"
Speaker:Cody added swiftly,
Speaker:as if to make a point that the coffee maker was staying.
Speaker:Becker moved groggily towards the pantry,
Speaker:pulling out two red plastic cups for himself.
Speaker:As he did, he spoke,
Speaker:"Mom said that it was a fair trade since the fur blower is staying with you, but whatever."
Speaker:"Oh, that's a surprise: You and her
Speaker:calculated it all down to the penny?"
Speaker:he asked with some bitterness in his voice.
Speaker:The panther clicked his tongue to his cheek,
Speaker:tail snapping like a whip.
Speaker:"You know, you could be a little more grateful.
Speaker:grateful." Cody opened his muzzle to speak,
Speaker:but a ding of the coffee machine’s bell interrupted him.
Speaker:There was nothing nice to say anyways,
Speaker:so it was for the best.
Speaker:He just grabbed the pot and
Speaker:poured it into his mug before holding it out towards Becker.
Speaker:The panther held out his cup,
Speaker:and Cody filled it about three quarters full.
Speaker:Cody sat his mug on the counter while
Speaker:the panther just sipped his black.
Speaker:He never understood how he could do that.
Speaker:The wolf added a hefty amount of cream before pouring in an
Speaker:almost equal amount of sugar inside.
Speaker:Becker looked at his mug,
Speaker:equally revolted by the wolf's choice.
Speaker:“So," Cody started, a little pause as he thought of his words.
Speaker:"Maybe we should divvy up our bars?
Speaker:Like how Rich and Josh did when they
Speaker:split up?" The panther's ears folded back,
Speaker:and he looked up with a little bit of a glare,
Speaker:"The Hopper is kinda my thing.
Speaker:Don't you have your own bar?"
Speaker:"I'm not gonna drink at my own bar. It's a straight bar.
Speaker:Can't you pick one of the clubs? You like dancing,"
Speaker:he pointed out, not wanting to give up The Hopper.
Speaker:It was closer, easier to walk home while drunk.
Speaker:Course, that was why they stumbled home together the night before and
Speaker:made this sticky mess.
Speaker:"You hardly ever go to The Hopper.
Speaker:You’re always with your football friends when you go out. Besides,
Speaker:it's hard to hit on dudes at the clubs with the music blaring,"
Speaker:Becker whined. "Yeah,
Speaker:you do like to do that, don't you?"
Speaker:Cody shot with some ice in his voice.
Speaker:The panther straightened his stance, claws dimpling the plastic cup he was holding.
Speaker:"I flirted. It was
Speaker:just flirting. You don't have
Speaker:any room to speak."
Speaker:"You'd do it right in fucking front of me all the time," Cody said,
Speaker:pointing his mug at the panther quick enough to spill some coffee over the rim.
Speaker:A mean smile split Becker’s muzzle,
Speaker:and he threw a paw out into the air.
Speaker:“Oh, Is this when you want to open up about your feelings?
Speaker:Didn’t want to do that before you—”
Speaker:"—How was I supposed to feel?"
Speaker:He interrupted. Even as the words left his mouth, he knew he stepped in it big time.
Speaker:"You weren’t supposed to feel that it was okay to cheat on me.
Speaker:How did the math
Speaker:even work out that you could compare the two?"
Speaker:Becker brought it up,
Speaker:like the months of marriage counseling hadn't drilled in how he was the bad guy.
Speaker:"Jeez, Beck, when's
Speaker:the fucking ice queen get here so I can finally stop having that thrown in my face
Speaker:every fucking day of my life?"
Speaker:Becker slapped his cup against the table,
Speaker:pointing a finger at the wolf.
Speaker:"How dare you? Mom’s done more for you than
Speaker:any of your washed up
Speaker:highschool-peaked loser football friends.
Speaker:Go drink with them!"
Speaker:Lines were being crossed all over,
Speaker:the fight they've
Speaker:always needed to have now that
Speaker:nothing was left to save.
Speaker:"They were the only people that stuck
Speaker:by me! You didn’t even give them
Speaker:a chance.” That seemed to strike a nerve and
Speaker:Becker quickly followed it up.
Speaker:“Didn’t give them a chance?
Speaker:They mocked me relentlessly.
Speaker:It stops being just a joke
Speaker:after the thousandth time they accuse me to turning you queer.”
Speaker:Cody shook his head back and forth.
Speaker:“Oh, boohoo. You didn’t get their sense of humor.
Speaker:Your mom exploited me
Speaker:for years in her fucking sweatshop.
Speaker:Even with my bad shoulder.
Speaker:Hell, she probably made it worse than it ever was,”
Speaker:he said, rotating his arm just to dig in his point.
Speaker:"You just resented her because
Speaker:you hate your own family for abandoning you!
Speaker:You couldn't understand how hard it was for her to take care of both of us
Speaker:while supporting herself,"
Speaker:Becker said, standing straight.
Speaker:Cody accepted the challenge, stepping forward to the panther.
Speaker:"Don't you dare bring up my family
Speaker:like you knew half
Speaker:of what I went through."
Speaker:"My dad—" " —Not the same fucking thing, Beck!
Speaker:Talk about false equivalencies,"
Speaker:Cody interrupted,
Speaker:but Becker was far from done.
Speaker:He just continued as if the wolf said nothing,
Speaker:"And I stayed at your side through all of it,
Speaker:only for you to throw it all away by sleeping with that otter."
Speaker:"You think we're splitting
Speaker:cause I cheated on you?
Speaker:News flash, Becker, but that was just a symptom
Speaker:of the cancer that was us. Or were you
Speaker:only paying attention to the shrink when I was being berated?"
Speaker:"I gave up my chance
Speaker:to be at UC Golden for you—"
Speaker:"That was your own
Speaker:choice!" Cody shouted back,
Speaker:but they were just yelling over one another.
Speaker:"—and stayed in this bumfuck town
Speaker:just to be close to you, and you
Speaker:don't feel the slightest
Speaker:bit of remorse!" Of course he felt bad about it,
Speaker:but Cody was done. He tried to get more words in,
Speaker:but the panther just kept going.
Speaker:Kept throwing everything in his face.
Speaker:He couldn't even hear his own voice anymore,
Speaker:so he grabbed his mug and chucked it as hard as he could
Speaker:just over his sink.
Speaker:CRASH It shattered
Speaker:and Becker cried out,
Speaker:but didn’t say anything after.
Speaker:An eerie silence came over the room,
Speaker:only the drips of coffee
Speaker:puddling onto the sink could be heard.
Speaker:Cody took a deep breath,
Speaker:and put his paws to his eyes to wipe away the tears.
Speaker:The wolf slumped his back against the counter and asked,
Speaker:"What're we doing?
Speaker:Why are we still
Speaker:fighting? It's done.
Speaker:We signed the papers.
Speaker:It's over. We killed the beast that was us,
Speaker:and we finally get to move on.
Speaker:on." Becker's body folded similarly against the kitchen island and
Speaker:he snorted up mucus.
Speaker:"I just didn't want it to end like this,"
Speaker:he said in a sigh.
Speaker:There was a long pause.
Speaker:Cody didn’t know how to respond to that,
Speaker:but the feline had another question on his mind.
Speaker:"When did we end up hating one another?"
Speaker:Cody dropped his paws and
Speaker:looked at the panther earnestly.
Speaker:Becker looked defeated,
Speaker:and it hurt to know that he was at fault for it.
Speaker:Straightening himself out, he shook his head back and forth and said,
Speaker:"I don't— I don’t actually hate you.
Speaker:you." Becker looked up,
Speaker:seemingly unconvinced at first,
Speaker:but with a half-hearted chuckle, Cody continued,
Speaker:"If anything, I think last night proves
Speaker:we don't hate each other.
Speaker:other." That got a weak laugh from Becker,
Speaker:but a soft sob followed it after.
Speaker:Becker paused, wiping a paw over his nose until he looked more composed.
Speaker:"I don't hate you either,"
Speaker:he admitted weakly.
Speaker:Cody stepped towards the shards of his mug,
Speaker:piling the pieces together carefully.
Speaker:"We just— there was so
Speaker:much pressure for us to work.
Speaker:Not just from us, but everyone. Everyone saw
Speaker:what we went through;
Speaker:everything we sacrificed: your school
Speaker:and my family. We just had so many unfair expectations to stay
Speaker:together, even when things were
Speaker:starting to become apparent.
Speaker:apparent." The first thing that came to Cody’s mind was
Speaker:Becker’s flirting,
Speaker:but the cracks started long before that.
Speaker:Times where he’d complain about his shoulder,
Speaker:only for the panther to come in defense of his mom and
Speaker:why she worked him as hard as she did.
Speaker:Times where the wolf’s friends would mock
Speaker:Becker and he was too afraid of losing them to stand up for his partner.
Speaker:Even before the otter, he’d had thoughts of sleeping around.
Speaker:Never brought it up,
Speaker:but talking was never his thing to begin with.
Speaker:Too late now. Again,
Speaker:they remained quiet.
Speaker:The ceramic clanked against the countertop as
Speaker:Cody traced a claw over his broken mug.
Speaker:He almost didn't hear the quiet padding of the panther
Speaker:coming up at his side.
Speaker:Becker rested a paw on his shoulder and held it there for
Speaker:a little while. After a few seconds, the feline finally spoke,
Speaker:"I don't want us to be like Rich and Josh.
Speaker:Josh." That got a snort out of Cody and
Speaker:he turned to face Becker. "Which part? The thing where they call bars ahead of time to make sure the other isn't there,
Speaker:or the weird rule that
Speaker:if we invite one out to do something, we have to invite the other for the next event so it seems fair?"
Speaker:Both of them chuckled at that and Cody
Speaker:continued, "No,
Speaker:I don't want us to be like that either.
Speaker:Too many weird fucking rules.
Speaker:But we could probably use some distance from each other.
Speaker:Just for a bit. You can have The Hopper for now.
Speaker:now." Becker shuffled his feet nervously and
Speaker:took a step away.
Speaker:"Actually, I was about to concede it.
Speaker:I don't think I'm ready anyways,"
Speaker:he said with his muzzle toward the ground.
Speaker:Cody turned to face the panther,
Speaker:"Don't think you're ready?"
Speaker:He folded an arm over his chest,
Speaker:sleek tail flicking back and forth at his side.
Speaker:"Yeah, it's just— last night.
Speaker:I was at the bar for hours.
Speaker:I thought I could just
Speaker:find a hookup to unwind.
Speaker:All I could do was stand in the corner, looking like a
Speaker:fucking creeper. I’m not really sure how to talk to meet people.
Speaker:people." Cody lifted his eyes up thoughtfully before nodding.
Speaker:"I guess you’ve never really hooked up with anyone before, right?
Speaker:That's weird. We're almost in our thirties and
Speaker:never have we had a proper date.
Speaker:date." With some bashfulness, Becker agreed,
Speaker:"Yeah. So after a couple drinks, I saw you, and I
Speaker:just kinda wanted to do anything but stand alone in a bar.
Speaker:bar." Cody nodded and then shook his head.
Speaker:"Yeah, no. I get it,"
Speaker:he said, but when he noticed the panther was still stuck in a frown, he added,
Speaker:"C’mon, Beck. You're a good guy.
Speaker:You're attractive and smart. It'll be alright.
Speaker:We’re not even out of our twenties yet.
Speaker:yet." The compliment was hard to give,
Speaker:especially since he didn’t want to accidentally give off the wrong signal.
Speaker:There were already too many sexual slip-ups between the two of them.
Speaker:Becker looked like he understood though,
Speaker:and gave a sharp nod.
Speaker:“Yeah, probably. Thanks.”
Speaker:They both sighed,
Speaker:exhausted, but in a better place then they were at the start.
Speaker:Becker flicked his ears over to the bathroom.
Speaker:"I should probably shower.
Speaker:You'll be gone by the time Mom gets here?"
Speaker:He didn't ask it with any resentment and
Speaker:Cody understood that,
Speaker:but shrugged his shoulders anyways.
Speaker:"I guess I can stay and help.
Speaker:What's one more box?"
Speaker:They both laughed,
Speaker:but before the panther left, he asked,
Speaker:"Um, I packed away my towels.
Speaker:Would you mind if I use your towel?"
Speaker:The very first thing off the tip of Cody’s tongue was to say,
Speaker:"Never stopped you before.
Speaker:before." but he didn't.
Speaker:It wouldn't have been malicious,
Speaker:and the joke would have been understood by both of them.
Speaker:No, he just knew that
Speaker:if they were going to move on,
Speaker:he was going to have to start putting their relationship
Speaker:behind him. "Sure thing.
Speaker:thing." The last box was
Speaker:stuffed into the moving van;
Speaker:a decade of Becker's life
Speaker:squeezed into a room-sized truck.
Speaker:His mother had kept things cordial,
Speaker:even though she did need to micromanage a little bit.
Speaker:Cody knew she couldn’t help herself,
Speaker:but didn't make anything more awkward than it had to be.
Speaker:It took both Cody and Becker to close up the trailer.
Speaker:Each grabbed a pull rope and rolled down the door until it locked in place.
Speaker:The wolf wrapped his claws against the back, saying,
Speaker:"That's everything?"
Speaker:It wasn't so much a question about the boxes.
Speaker:They knew well enough that
Speaker:everything was in the truck.
Speaker:Becker gave a half-smile,
Speaker:grabbing hold of the latch and locking it closed.
Speaker:"I think that's everything.
Speaker:everything." Cody looked towards the house,
Speaker:his new life in front of him just as his old life was
Speaker:leaving him behind.
Speaker:He then turned back to Becker and asked,
Speaker:"You'd still want to be friends after this?"
Speaker:Becker slugged Cody's uninjured shoulder,
Speaker:even though he didn't like it when the wolf did it to him,
Speaker:and asked, "Forever?"
Speaker:Tears built up over the wolf's eyes.
Speaker:He pulled him into a tight hug and
Speaker:Becker squeezed back tightly.
Speaker:Through a sob, Cody muttered into his ex's shoulder.
Speaker:"Forever." Forever. This was
