Today my special guest is Xavi Benjamin.
Xavi Benjamin is an artist and digital creator with an insatiable curiosity. He's the host of The Xavi Benjamin Show, a podcast with commentary and analysis about technology, culture, and politics from the communist perspective.
He is a former Jehovah's Witness and in Part 1 of this conversation, we talk about his journey out of the box of religion and the impact that has had on his life. We learn about his upbringing in the religious organization of The Kingdom Hall and what led to the unraveling of his faith and the devastation that caused.
Many have never had to reason themselves out of their very deep faith and religion. That takes bravery and causes someone to question everything they have ever known. It's scary and it can be dark some days. We are taught to fit into certain boxes to fit in, and taught to judge other boxes. But breaking free means that you get to question the boxes that you have been forced into your whole life and you get step out of the box. You don't have to fit in a box to live a good life. In fact, many people are stuck in boxes and don't even know who they are anymore.
There are others who just leave one box for another and don't even really ever question the reason they were in the box to begin with. Many just try to fit in somewhere else instead of discovering who they truly are. They never find where they truly belong because they are too busy needing to fit in another prescribed box full of rules to once again try to fit in.
We get to decide who we want to be and what kind of impact we want to have on the world and those around us. We get to decide what brings us joy and then we get to create the life we desire.
Nobody gets to determine your sexuality or your style of loving. Only you know what lights you up and what brings you joy and pleasure. Let's not step into another box without evaluating the reasons we left the first box. This is where we get judgement and shame from.
Let's get rid of judgment and shame and honour each other's choices. Let's be loving, honest, and ethical towards others so that the world will be a much better place, full of loving freedom.
