Plot Summary

Presented in three reverse-chronological acts:

• Act III — "Thanks, Chuck": The film opens amid global apocalypse—natural disasters, internet collapse, and societal unraveling. People see billboards celebrating Charles "Chuck" Krantz: “39 Great Years! Thanks, Chuck!” Tom Hiddleston’s Chuck appears as a mysterious figure behind the unraveling universe. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Marty, a teacher, who with his ex Felicia (Karen Gillan) experience the surreal end of days.

• Act II — "Buskers Forever": Flashback to Chuck before his death—an everyday man with a family, secretly dying from a brain tumor. On a street, he’s moved by a busker, and spontaneously breaks into dance with a passerby, embracing joy despite his mortality.

• Act I — "I Contain Multitudes": Chuck’s childhood is explored. Raised by grandparents, he uncovers his passion for dance. In a haunting hidden attic, he envisions his adult self battling a fatal illness—and he resolves then to live fully despite knowing his fate.

Background & Interesting Details

• Adapted from Stephen King’s 2020 novella in If It Bleeds

• Premiered at TIFF 2024 and won the People’s Choice Award

• Flanagan, known for horror (e.g. Doctor Sleep), takes a more emotional and philosophical route here

• The film includes Easter eggs tied to King's broader universe—a top hat from Doctor Sleep appears in The Life of Chuck, and a 1958 Plymouth Fury nods to Christine

• Mark Hamill gives a poignant turn as Chuck’s grandfather Albie Krantz; his role marks a departure from his iconic Luke Skywalker legacy, reflecting on mortality and resilience

• Mia Sara returns to screens after a long hiatus, playing Chuck’s grandmother, and her children were proud of her revival

• Stephen King himself applauds the film's emphasis on joy, love, and humanity as an uplifting contrast to darker tales
