Before we get into it, I want to ground myself in gratitude. Here are three things that I’m thankful for.
The first thing that I’m thankful for is fun shirts. Sometimes it's the little things. Wearing something with a little personality that brings some energy into the day—that can shift how you feel. Walking into the classroom, your kids’ game, or just out in public—I love a fun shirt.
The second thing that I’m thankful for is days where I can dress down. I wear a lot of plaid shirts and dress pants, so when there’s a day to go a little more relaxed, it just feels good. It’s a small thing, but it makes a difference.
And the third thing that I’m thankful for is bodies of water—oceans, rivers, streams, lakes. There’s something about water and movement. It’s powerful, calming, and something I really connect with—whether it’s recreation or just being around it.
Well, let’s get into the main topic, y’all.
There’s a shift happening in how we think about learning—less focus on memorization, more focus on thinking. And that’s a good thing.
But somewhere along the way, memorization started to feel like the enemy.

And that confidence matters.
Memorization gives students something to stand on—but it’s not where they stay.
It’s a step toward deeper learning.
Practice leads to retention.
Repetition helps learning stick over time.
Students need multiple exposures—across days, weeks, and even months.
That’s where spiral learning matters.
Moving knowledge from short-term to long-term memory takes time and intention.
Understanding and memorization work together.
They are not opposites.
Memorization builds understanding, and understanding strengthens memory.
When students explain something in their own words, both grow together.
Retrieval strengthens learning.
Bringing information back to mind—without notes—builds stronger memory and deeper understanding.
It’s not just about reviewing.
It’s about retrieving.
Students still need knowledge in a digital world.
Even with technology, they can’t rely on looking everything up.
Thinking quickly and making connections requires stored knowledge.
Memorization supports independence and efficiency.
And ultimately, the goal is balance—not elimination.
The goal is not to remove memorization.
It’s to use it as part of a bigger process that includes thinking, understanding, and application.
When students know something and can explain and use it—that’s real learning.
