The central theme of this sermon, titled "The Overflowing Cup," elucidates the notion that overflow is not merely a display of abundance but rather a profound responsibility bestowed upon us by God. It emphasizes that to receive overflow, one must first cultivate the character, wisdom, and assignment necessary to manage it effectively. The sermon draws upon biblical passages, particularly Psalm 23, to illustrate that true overflow originates from alignment with the Shepherd, urging listeners to seek God's kingdom before pursuing material gain. Furthermore, it underscores that overflow is meant for purposeful endeavors, such as generosity and community upliftment, rather than personal ego. As we navigate the complexities of increase, we are reminded of the importance of discernment, boundaries, and the restoration of our souls to ensure that our blessings do not become burdens. The sermon "The Overflowing Cup" presents a compelling exploration of the theological and practical implications of spiritual overflow in the life of a believer. The preacher opens with a striking assertion that many individuals do not require additional prayers for blessings; instead, they need to cultivate the capacity to receive and manage those blessings responsibly. Building on Psalm 23:5, the message elucidates that overflow is a divine endowment granted by God, contingent upon the believer's relationship with the Shepherd. This foundational truth establishes that seeking the Kingdom of God must precede any desire for material blessings, framing overflow as a sacred responsibility rather than a mere status symbol. Throughout the sermon, the preacher emphasizes that the purpose of overflow is to enable good works and serve others, rather than to inflate one's ego. Citing 2 Corinthians 9:8, the message underscores that true abundance is meant for generosity and impact within the community. The preacher offers practical wisdom on managing desires and establishing boundaries, warning against the dangers of wealth that distracts from spiritual integrity. The sermon concludes with a heartfelt prayer, inviting listeners to surrender their desires and motives to God, thereby enlarging their capacity to be vessels of His blessings. By the end of the message, participants are encouraged to view their overflow as a testimony of God's trustworthiness, fostering a mindset of stewardship and purpose in their spiritual journeys.
Takeaways:
Brothers and sisters, let me start like this.
Speaker A:Some of you don't need a new prayer, you need a new container.
Speaker A:Because you keep asking God for overflow, but you don't have the character to carry it, the wisdom to manage it, or the assignment to aim it.
Speaker A:And in this message, we're dealing with a dangerous blessing, because overflow can bless you or expose you.
Speaker A:The message is titled the Overflowing Cup.
Speaker A:And I'm going to show you from Scripture that overflow is not a flex, it's a responsibility.
Speaker A:Overflow is not proof that you're better than people.
Speaker A:Overflow is proof that God can trust you with more than yourself.
Speaker A:If you're with somebody, say, lord, make me trustworthy.
Speaker A:Say, I can carry it.
Speaker A:Say, if you're with somebody, my cup runneth over.
Speaker A:The point one of the message, the overflow starts with the shepherd.
Speaker A:Let's anchor this in the word.
Speaker A:Psalm 23:5, you anoint my head with oil, my cup runs over.
Speaker A:Now watch the order.
Speaker A:You anoint my head, my cup runs over.
Speaker A:And the meaning is, overflow is connected to God's hand, not your hustle alone.
Speaker A:But Psalm 23 doesn't start at verse 5.
Speaker A:It starts with, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
Speaker A:Psalm 23, verse 1.
Speaker A:You cannot run after overflow while running away from the shepherd.
Speaker A:You cannot demand provision while refusing direction.
Speaker A:You cannot ask for cup, running over while ignoring.
Speaker A:He leads me.
Speaker A:Say this with me, Lord, lead me, I will follow.
Speaker A:Overflow is not the reward for noise.
Speaker A:Overflow is the fruit of alignment.
Speaker A:Matthew 6:33 says, Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Speaker A:When the king is first, provision follows.
Speaker A:Say to the person you're with, I am not chasing things, I am chasing the kingdom.2.
Speaker A:Overflow is for assignment, not ego.
Speaker A:Listen there.
Speaker A:This is where people get confused.
Speaker A:They think overflow is for lifestyle.
Speaker A:No, no, no.
Speaker A:Overflow is for assignment.
Speaker A:God doesn't fill cups so you can post them.
Speaker A:He fills cups so you can pour.
Speaker A:Let me prove it with 2 Corinthians 9:8.
Speaker A:And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
Speaker A:Did you hear that?
Speaker A:Abundance is aimed at good work, not just vibes, not just good drip.
Speaker A:Good work.
Speaker A:And verse 11 says, you'll be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion.
Speaker A:Second Corinthians 9:11.
Speaker A:So the point of overflow is generosity, impact, building Missions, family, stability, community, upliftment, justice and legacy.
Speaker A:Say this with me.
Speaker A:Overflow is for purpose.
Speaker A:I am blessed to be a blessing.
Speaker A:If you will somebody say, I am not a pond, I am a river.
Speaker A:Say, God can get it through me.
Speaker A:Point 3.
Speaker A:If you don't master desire, overflow will master you.
Speaker A:Now there's a warning with love.
Speaker A:Because there is a kind of wealth that comes with sorrow, and there is a kind of increase that comes with bondage.
Speaker A:The Bible says in 1 Timothy 6, 9, 10, those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap.
Speaker A:For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Speaker A:Like, notice it doesn't say money is evil.
Speaker A:It says the love of money because.
Speaker A:Because money is a tool, but love makes it a throne.
Speaker A:So let us ask, do you want overflow to serve God, or do you want overflow to serve your own ego?
Speaker A:Because if your appetite is not healed, your money will never satisfy you.
Speaker A:You'll just upgrade your emptiness.
Speaker A:Some people don't need more money.
Speaker A:They need more deliverance.
Speaker A:If you're with somebody, say, lord, cleanse my motives and heal my desires.
Speaker A:Point 4.
Speaker A:Your cup must have a lid, discernment and boundaries.
Speaker A:Listen, overflow attracts attention.
Speaker A:And not all attention is love.
Speaker A:When God starts increasing you, a couple of things happen.
Speaker A:Demand increases, temptations increase, and warfare increases.
Speaker A:This is why your cup must have a lid.
Speaker A:Meaning you need discernment and boundaries.
Speaker A:Jesus had overflow.
Speaker A:Miracles, crowds, influence.
Speaker A:But he also had boundaries.
Speaker A:Sometimes he healed everybody, sometimes he walked away.
Speaker A:Sometimes he fed the crowd, sometimes he disappeared to pray.
Speaker A: Even Paul said in Acts: Speaker A:But Paul didn't let people manipulate him either.
Speaker A:So let's speak to somebody who is a tad soft.
Speaker A:If you don't learn to say no, your overflow will become your oppression.
Speaker A:Say this, I will have boundaries.
Speaker A:I will be led by God.
Speaker A:Say this to yourself.
Speaker A:Your yes is powerful, but your no is holy.
Speaker A:Overflow doesn't begin in your wallet.
Speaker A:It begins in your soul.
Speaker A:Let's go Back to Psalm 23.
Speaker A:David says, he restores my soul.
Speaker A:Some people want a restored bank account with an unrestored soul.
Speaker A:But God is not trying to make you rich and broken.
Speaker A:He's trying to make you whole and fruitful.
Speaker A:Because if your soul is not restored, you'll spend to soothe pain.
Speaker A:You'll shop to silence anxiety.
Speaker A:You'll chase status to cover insecurity.
Speaker A:And you'll use money to medicate emptiness.
Speaker A:And you'll never have peace, no matter how big the number is.
Speaker A:So the real question is not, lord, increase my income.
Speaker A:The deeper prayer should be, lord, increase my capacity.
Speaker A:Capacity is the true currency of increase.
Speaker A:Say this Lord, enlarge my capacity.
Speaker A:Make me a safe place for blessing.
Speaker A:Point 6 the table in the presence of enemies is overflow with pressure.
Speaker A:Psalm 23:5 says, you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
Speaker A:That means overflow is not always comfortable.
Speaker A:Sometimes God blesses you while people watch.
Speaker A:And sometimes God increases you while criticism surrounds you.
Speaker A:And sometimes God elevates you while jealousy is loud.
Speaker A:And here is what most believers don't understand.
Speaker A:If you can't handle pressure, you can't handle promotion.
Speaker A:If you can't handle warfare, you can't handle wealth.
Speaker A:That's why some of you are being trained right now.
Speaker A:God is building spiritual spine in you.
Speaker A:He's making you stable.
Speaker A:He's making you unshakable.
Speaker A:Say this, I will not be moved.
Speaker A:My blessing will not break me.
Speaker A:Say this, I can take the heat and God is training me.
Speaker A:Here are some applicable lessons which are both practical and spiritual for believers.
Speaker A:First, pursue the shepherd while you pursue the salary.
Speaker A:Build capacity, wisdom, discipline, emotional health and integrity and create a poor plan, giving, saving, investing and helping strategically.
Speaker A:And this one is for ministry, work and family.
Speaker A:Make your house a distribution center, not a drama center.
Speaker A:Take some time to teach children stewardship and generosity and do it early.
Speaker A:Put boundaries around your generosity so you don't enable dysfunction.
Speaker A:Brothers and sisters, money is a terrible master and a powerful servant.
Speaker A:Jesus said, you cannot serve both God and money.
Speaker A:Matthew 6:24 so if money is pulling your heart away from prayer, away from purity, away from purpose, that is not overflow.
Speaker A:That is a trap.
Speaker A:But if God is first and your hands are clean and your motives are pure, then walk boldly.
Speaker A:Your cup can run over without sorrow.
Speaker A: You read this in Proverbs: Speaker A:1 Do I want overflow flow for purpose or for ego and image?
Speaker A:And 2 what boundaries do I need so increase doesn't increase my temptation?
Speaker A:And then three where does God need to restore my soul so I stop using money to mitigate pain?
Speaker A:Here is a prayer and we must pray it.
Speaker A:Father, in the name of Jesus, I surrender my desires, my motives and my appetites to you.
Speaker A:Restore my soul, heal my heart, cleanse my intentions, anoint my head with oil and enlarge my capacity to carry blessing and humility and wisdom.
Speaker A:Teach me to seek first your kingdom.
Speaker A:Enrich me so I can be generous, fruitful and faithful, without compromise and without sorrow.
Speaker A:Give me discernment, boundaries and courage to steward overflow for assignment.
Speaker A:Let my cup run over and let what spills out glorify you and bless others in Jesus name.
Speaker A:Amen and amen.
Speaker A:Brothers and sisters.
Speaker A:Overflow is not a trophy.
Speaker A:Overflow is a testimony.
Speaker A:Now go and live like God can trust you.
