Hey everybody.
2
:Welcome back to another edition
of the daily Bible podcast.
3
:What's up?
4
:It is Friday, March 21st.
5
:So we're almost all the way through March.
6
:April is right around the corner.
7
:It's open house day here
at the church office.
8
:Indeed it is.
9
:So just drop by.
10
:Swing by.
11
:Get some buntinis and some cookies.
12
:Say hey to us.
13
:We do have meetings
throughout the day today.
14
:So just be aware of that.
15
:But if we're here, we want to see you.
16
:We want to say hey.
17
:And we're looking forward to
seeing some of our church family
18
:tomorrow, but, or today, tomorrow
as we record it anyways yeah.
19
:And then we get the weekend coming up.
20
:I've got a licensed
driver in my household.
21
:Now my son passed his
driver's license exam.
22
:Wow.
23
:Did you post it on Facebook?
24
:So I got it saying, watch out everybody.
25
:Josh is on the road.
26
:Be careful.
27
:I didn't.
28
:Nope.
29
:Nope.
30
:I did not do that.
31
:Are you sure?
32
:I thought you said you
were going to do that.
33
:I, I love when people do that.
34
:I do.
35
:I, it's my favorite thing because then
I drive extra vigilantly after that.
36
:Cause I'm like, maybe that's that person.
37
:I don't know.
38
:Maybe it's that person over there.
39
:I don't know.
40
:Yeah, no, but he did.
41
:He passed.
42
:I'm proud of him.
43
:He was pretty nervous about it, but
got a, some nice lady down in, in
44
:Carrollton and she was the one that gave
him the driver's exam and he passed.
45
:So good job, Josh.
46
:Good job, Josh.
47
:Yeah.
48
:Jacob's when's Jacob turn?
49
:16 June, Okay.
50
:So you got a little bit of time
a little bit of time to enjoy
51
:this season while I have it.
52
:yeah.
53
:Before adding him to insurance, I'm
going to put a Facebook post that says,
54
:watch out world, here comes Jacob.
55
:Here comes, you should do it right now.
56
:You should be like, he's got a permit.
57
:I'll schedule it.
58
:Yeah.
59
:He's on there.
60
:Yeah.
61
:Anyhow.
62
:Yeah, that's what's going on.
63
:Nothing nothing out of
the ordinary this weekend.
64
:We don't have baptisms or
anything else like that.
65
:We had baptisms last weekend, but
we do, we will be gathering together
66
:as the church we're finishing up our
discipled series, which has taken
67
:us from John 14 all the way now, or
13 all the way now through John 17.
68
:So we're starting a brand new series
in John next week called the gathering
69
:storm about the impending betrayal
and arrest and death and resident.
70
:Not the resurrection, but
Betrayal, rest and death of Jesus.
71
:And then we'll hit the resurrection in a
different series as we wrap up the gospel.
72
:John, it's hard to believe that we're not
far away from ending our study of John.
73
:Just about, it is hard to believe
a month and a half, two months.
74
:Some of us don't believe that well,
believe it because Lord willing,
75
:what are we going into next?
76
:We are planning a summer series called the
summer with the small guys and it's going
77
:to be a summer covering the minor profits.
78
:So we're going to be a little bit
ambitious and we're going to try to tackle
79
:a minor profit a week over the summer.
80
:So it's going to have a different feel.
81
:It'll still be expository preaching, but
expository preaching of a large chunk of
82
:scripture in some of these minor prophets.
83
:So the minor profits are not guys
that we're too familiar with.
84
:At least most of us, I would
feel safe in saying that.
85
:But there's a lot of
really good material there.
86
:And so we'll be preaching through that.
87
:I'll be out for a couple of weeks.
88
:So you'll be preaching through,
I think Jonah is one of them.
89
:I don't know what you've landed on.
90
:We haven't talked through that and
hash that out yet for the second one.
91
:But yeah, we're excited.
92
:I'm excited about the summer series.
93
:I think it's going to be
really helpful for us.
94
:Jonah for the first half.
95
:And then Jonah for the second half
Jonah one and two, Jonah three and four.
96
:Okay.
97
:That'd be easy.
98
:There you go.
99
:I think you can pull that off.
100
:We can do that.
101
:It robs them of one minor profit
because you'll just have to do two.
102
:And some of them lend themselves
to that quite naturally.
103
:Yeah.
104
:There are some that are.
105
:Are small enough to tackle
two of them maybe in one.
106
:I'm excited about Hibakiak.
107
:That's my favorite of all the minor
profits is Hibakiak but yeah, and
108
:then I haven't fully landed on yet
on where we're going in the fall, but
109
:that'll get us through the summer.
110
:So it should be good.
111
:Let's jump into our
Bible reading for today.
112
:We've got Deuteronomy 30 and 31 chapter 30
is a really a rallying chapter, a call to
113
:obedience, exhortation that what's being
commanded is not too hard for them to do.
114
:In fact, if you look at verses 12
through 14 of chapter 30, this is
115
:something that Paul will quote in
Romans 10 verses six through eight.
116
:And so here it has to do with the
law and Moses is saying in verse
117
:12, is it's not in heaven that you
should say who will ascend to heaven.
118
:it for it and bring us down.
119
:Neither is it beyond the sea.
120
:He's saying, look, this is doable.
121
:You can understand these things
and you can do these things.
122
:In Romans 10, six through eight,
he's Paul's not going to apply
123
:that to the law, but to the gospel.
124
:And and that's the perk, the
benefit, the blessing that we
125
:have on this side of the cross.
126
:cross is that's the way that God relates
to us primarily is through the gospel
127
:and no longer through the law as a means
of our maintaining our status with him
128
:as it was in, in Old Testament Israel.
129
:Now, salvation was always by faith alone.
130
:As we go back to Abraham,
Abraham believed God and it was
131
:credited to him as righteousness.
132
:But in this dispensation, the primary
means of communication was the law.
133
:Whereas for you and I now under
the gospel, the primary means of
134
:God's relationship with us is the
spirit who helps us abide in Christ.
135
:And so Deuteronomy chapter 30
about just an encouragement to
136
:the people, Hey you can do this.
137
:The choice is between you
choose life, choose death.
138
:I'm calling on you to choose life,
follow the Lord and obey him.
139
:How does this fit with our theology that
says that they actually were incapable
140
:of doing what they were called to do?
141
:The new covenant is explicitly
given because they don't
142
:have a circumcised heart.
143
:They needed the spirit to do something in
them in order for them to work this out.
144
:So how do we put these two things
together when it seems like they don't?
145
:They don't fit.
146
:Yeah.
147
:That's the old question or the
statement that some people make.
148
:God never commands us to do anything
that we're incapable of doing.
149
:And I think in categorically,
I would say that's true.
150
:God never commands us pick up a
mountain and throw a mountain.
151
:He doesn't command us to be able to fly.
152
:He doesn't command us to be able to, have.
153
:Hold on a second.
154
:He the things that he's called us to do
that he's the laws and commitments that
155
:he's given to us These are things that
we are able and capable to do now where
156
:our inability comes in is our flesh We
are incapable of doing it perfectly.
157
:We are incapable of justifying
ourselves by the law.
158
:We can't be a hundred percent Perfectly
obedient to the law because of our flesh,
159
:but there's no one individual commandment
that God has given us that we cannot
160
:live up to that we can't measure up to.
161
:So the indictment is more of the 30,
000 foot view, whereas the statement
162
:of you, you're able to do it, it's
here is more on the ground with us.
163
:helpful.
164
:Yeah, chapter 31, then we get in
here chapter 31 is really more about
165
:God's foretelling of the evil that
would be perpetuated by the people
166
:in the promise land than it is about
the transfer of leadership to Joshua.
167
:Even though the chapter is titled Joshua
to succeed Moses there in your ESV.
168
:This is a lot of God saying after that,
Hey, this is what's going to happen.
169
:This is not going to go well.
170
:Things are going to go.
171
:And so it's a, it's a downer for Joshua.
172
:Joshua was being given the reins
and then God's Hey, things are
173
:going to go horribly wrong for you.
174
:So not a super encouraging passage for
for Joshua to sit there and consider.
175
:But it's, yeah, I wanted to bring up,
and I don't want to open up too big of
176
:a can of worms, but I do want to call
our attention to our Deuteronomy 31
177
:21 says this, and when many evils and
troubles have come upon them, this song
178
:shall comfort them or confront them as
a witness for it will live unforgotten
179
:in the mouths of their offspring.
180
:He's talking about the song that
Moses is going to give us in the next
181
:chapter that we'll cover tomorrow.
182
:But God says this afterwards, for
I know what they are inclined to
183
:do even today before I have brought
them into the land that I swore
184
:that just swore to give to them.
185
:This introduces the concept
of middle knowledge, being
186
:the view of God's sovereignty.
187
:That would suggest that he was
able to look down across the
188
:corridors of time before creating
and consider all of the possible.
189
:Outcomes that are out there based on
man's moral free agency And that god
190
:chose to create the world in which
the most amount of good in the most
191
:salvations would occur Based on knowing
beforehand what man was Inclined to do.
192
:And so some will point to this verse and
say, this verse seems to suggest or imply
193
:Molinism because God says, for I know
that they are what they are inclined to
194
:do even today before I've brought them
into the land that I swore to give them.
195
:What is Molinism?
196
:Molinism is named after the one that kind
of perpetuated that view that God looked
197
:down the corridors of time, considered
all the different options and said,
198
:this is the option that's out there.
199
:It's a Francis Molina.
200
:I think the guy's first name was Francis.
201
:I know his last name was Molina.
202
:I don't know about the first time either.
203
:Yeah.
204
:And he was the one that it's named after.
205
:So Molinism Molina.
206
:This is not an aberrant view.
207
:It's not a heretical view, not by
any stretch of the imagination.
208
:It's not one that I agree with because I
think the other statements in scripture
209
:give a more clear support to the idea
that God is sovereign in ordaining
210
:the things, not just knowing what we
would do, but ordaining what happens.
211
:If you think about the fact that he
hardened Pharaoh's heart there are
212
:instances where God clearly intervenes
where God reaches into humanity and
213
:makes things happen on our account
or in our favor or even in judgment.
214
:So I don't.
215
:think Molinism is the correct view,
but a verse like this is one that
216
:people would point to and suggest.
217
:Now one of the leading supporters
of Molinism today is a guy named
218
:William Lane Craig and William Lane.
219
:Craig is a known apologist as well.
220
:And Craig, I was watching James White.
221
:So I guess it wasn't a debate, but
James White was critiquing Craig's point
222
:of view and yet played a quote from
Craig, where Craig said of them all
223
:in this view that there are subjective
influences outside of the control of God
224
:that lead a mankind to make decisions.
225
:And God looks at those decisions
that mankind is going to make and
226
:creates the best world possible.
227
:And so that idea of subjective decisions
outside the control of God, that's where
228
:I can't get behind, I can't get behind
That perspective of the monistic viewpoint
229
:or the middle knowledge viewpoint.
230
:It's out there though.
231
:You may encounter it You may
hear people that talk about this.
232
:They may cite a verse like this Still
I think when we look at the big picture
233
:I think there are far more evidences of
god's sovereignty in his on the ground
234
:ordaining what's happening in the world
Then there are instances like this where
235
:this is the temptation to say he just
knows what we'd be inclined to do Yeah,
236
:that's a helpful clarification, in the
new testament It's one of those situations
237
:where Jesus says if this preaching would
have been done here and not there they
238
:would have repented They would have done
this they would have done that so it's
239
:not without some biblical foundation
But there's probably better ways to deal
240
:with it Molina to his credit was trying
to put together God's sovereignty and
241
:man's I'm not gonna say free will but
his Responsibility to do the right thing.
242
:And I wonder if this is just one
of those areas that we have to say,
243
:man, Lord, when we don't, and even
though we get really inventive and
244
:middle knowledge is really creative.
245
:Now I appreciate that creativity, but
whether or not it really adequately
246
:deals with what we see in scriptures is
yet to be understood and yet to be seen.
247
:I don't think that it does either.
248
:But out of this chapter, I just
want to point out one thing here.
249
:You're going to see in verse six.
250
:That Moses says to Joshua,
be strong and courageous.
251
:You're going to see this refrain repeated
all throughout the rest of the book of
252
:Deuteronomy and even leading into the
book of Joshua as these two words, be
253
:strong and courageous, come to the full
come to the four over and over again.
254
:Even though he was largely giving
Joshua some bad news about how it's
255
:going to be challenging, I think this
is appropriate given the responsibility
256
:that he has to lead, you're going to
need strength, you're going to need
257
:courage, strength because you're going
to be tempted to be weak willed and.
258
:Lacking endurance.
259
:So you need to be strong, stay with it.
260
:And then you're going to need courage
because there's going to be lots of
261
:fearful things that confront you.
262
:Even the people that are going
to say, we don't want to do
263
:what you're asking us to do.
264
:That's the first thing.
265
:Notice.
266
:Also the second thing I want to
point your attention to here in verse
267
:number 10, Moses commanded them at
the end of every seven years at the
268
:set time in the year of release.
269
:The Feast of Booths, when all
Israel comes to appear before
270
:the Lord, your God essentially he
says this, you shall read this law
271
:before all Israel in their hearing.
272
:So they were exposed to the whole
law at least once every seven years.
273
:What a privilege it is that you
can be exposed to the law every
274
:single day and you're going to be
exposed to it in large measure.
275
:You can have all of you could read
the Bible every year for seven years,
276
:you can read it more than that.
277
:You have a privilege that they
did not have, which means.
278
:Greater privilege, greater responsibility.
279
:Please know that this is
what God desires of us.
280
:He wants us to know his law, wants us to
know his word and you have the privileged
281
:ability to read it, to understand it in
your language and you have direct access
282
:to it every single day of your life.
283
:What a cool thing that is.
284
:It is a cool thing.
285
:And this is.
286
:Unfortunate because this is
a something that God commands
287
:that Israel doesn't really do.
288
:And especially once we get into the Kings,
this is something that we find with Ezra.
289
:The book of the law is rediscovered by
the time that we get around to Ezra and
290
:it's read for the people and there's
national mourning because they are
291
:confronted again with God's law that
they realize how far they've drifted
292
:from God's law in part because they
hadn't been listening to God's law.
293
:And yeah, I agree with you,
man, that is so important for
294
:us and for our godliness too.
295
:If you're out there saying, man,
I want to grow in godliness.
296
:And yet you're not in taking God's
word on a regular basis, then you're
297
:not going to grow in godliness.
298
:You're not going to know
what God's desire is for you.
299
:You're not going to know what he's
calling you to do, the way that
300
:he wants you to walk, that the
path that he wants you to take.
301
:So yeah, God's word is crucial
and it's so important for us.
302
:And you're right.
303
:We have a huge blessing because we have
it at our fingertips on the computer,
304
:on our phone, in, in the physical copies
of the Bible, whatever we may have.
305
:That's our primary medium in our
language and in our language,
306
:different, yeah, different media,
audio Bible, picture Bibles, word,
307
:everything we have so many resources.
308
:Yeah.
309
:Yeah.
310
:Let's talk about different
translations real quick here.
311
:As we're doing the daily Bible reading,
as we're reading through this PR, your
312
:thoughts on somebody that's I'm doing the
daily Bible reading with you guys, but
313
:I'm reading in a different translation.
314
:I love a good translation that
differs from my faithful trustee ESV.
315
:I am a fan of several translations
and I have them open usually in
316
:some way, shape or form in front of
me when I'm reading my own Bible.
317
:So I'm totally fine with that.
318
:I would say that the biggest encouragement
I have is make sure that you're
319
:the Bible that you're studying is a
faithful translation that is as close
320
:as possible to the original rendering.
321
:And largely still has some readability.
322
:So I love my ESV.
323
:I've been using it now for
years since coming to compass.
324
:So I think you need to find a Bible
that you can live with, not just
325
:one that you're going to visit.
326
:And one that you'll have by your side,
but one that you can live in something
327
:that you can memorize and know that it's
as close as possible to the original
328
:rendering of the text so that you
can be meditating upon it accurately.
329
:A lot of other really good Bibles
like your NIVs or your CSBs.
330
:Now take a little more liberty in
translating because you're trying to
331
:communicate the idea more than they're
trying to communicate the exact wording.
332
:So be aware of that, but find a
good translation to be my primary
333
:advice and make sure you live in it.
334
:What would you say?
335
:Yeah, I would agree with you.
336
:I would, my only caveat would be, I think
on Sunday mornings when you're coming to
337
:church, I would bring an ASV just because
even if you're a really smart person,
338
:Trying to to read along in a different
translation while the word is being
339
:preached from ESV is going to require
more mental energy for you because you're
340
:going to have to put things together.
341
:And even, passively that's
going to tax you more.
342
:And so it'll take away from
the energy that you're able to
343
:devote to paying attention to the
preaching, paying attention to
344
:the text and in our time together.
345
:Grab an ESV, open up your ESV on
your phone, whatever it is, as you're
346
:somewhere where somebody is preaching.
347
:And we do that as preachers too.
348
:If we're preaching somewhere else at a
different church, we're gonna ask them,
349
:Hey what translation do you guys use?
350
:And as long as they're not telling
us they use an aberrant translation
351
:or something that's really awful.
352
:Passion.
353
:Yeah, passion translation.
354
:Then we're gonna say, okay, great
we'll preach from that translation.
355
:It may not be our go-to, but in that
context with the body of Christ, the
356
:community is probably good to do that.
357
:So grab an ESV and and
bring that with you.
358
:That would be my two cents on that.
359
:Anyways, let me pray.
360
:And then we'll be done with this episode.
361
:Thanks for your word.
362
:Thanks for the law that we have,
the word of God that we have, not
363
:just the law, but the whole thing
that we have at our fingertips.
364
:Again, to help us to be
men and women of the word.
365
:We pray that often at the end
of these podcasts because this
366
:is what we're confronted with.
367
:This is what we're talking about.
368
:We're talking about the Bible.
369
:We're talking about your word, the
scriptures, the Holy word of God, and
370
:we get to have it with us at all times.
371
:May we saturate our lives with it so that
we know it thoroughly, that we know it.
372
:in and out, and that it shows up
in the way that we live our lives
373
:because we listen and we obey.
374
:And so God, we need your
spirit towards that.
375
:As we talked about even earlier that
the call to obey is one that even
376
:though none of the commands that you've
given us are beyond our capability
377
:overall we are fallen individuals.
378
:And so we need your spirit to make us
more and more godly as the years go by.
379
:And we pray that you do just that
so that we're more like Jesus.
380
:We pray in his name.
381
:Amen.
382
:Keep reading your Bibles.
