And when the Lord does something small, but it blesses you, it too should be acknowledged.

Lord, we come against that in the name of Jesus.

We speak comfort and peace and grace for those that are feeling that anxiety and it's overwhelming.

We pray that they would seize faith and overcome fear through the power of faith.

I will not be afraid.

But Lord, you have us in the palm of your hands.

Please keep us close to you.

All of that would be correct.

Only spend time with God in each one of those.

Let's get into the text that we're going to be talking about, and here's what I want you to know.

I was driving and I was in Flagstaff, Arizona.

I remember when this happened.

I remember the exact spot.

Literally the exact spot it happened in my life driving down the road.

Philippians 3:12 is the thing the Lord dropped on me.

Whenever that happens, a scripture comes to my mind.

I start going through it word by word, trying to really am I missing something?

What am I not catching?

Many of you will know this.

I'll share it with you.

You've heard it before.

But I want to pick up on something that doesn't happen a lot in the scripture.

Here's what it says.

Not that I have already obtained all of this or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

Just prior you got the forgetting those things that are behind in pressing forward to the things which are before.

That's where everybody knows that scripture from.

But if you look at Philippians 3:12, there's something in the middle of the verse that's really interesting.

Not that I have already obtained all this or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

And as I am praying and meditating on the verse and talking to the Lord and kind of communing, it dawns on me, I want to take hold of that for which Jesus took hold of me.

In other words, I want to seize on that for which God has seized me.

For I want to do what he wants.

Now, I know there's things that he wants me to do, and I'm walking in those and growing in those and developing more Christ, like in many areas, in some areas much slower than other areas.

I know I'm the only Christian who could say that, but I'm just doing what I can moving forward in the Lord.

But I also want to seize and take hold of and grasp that for which Christ Jesus grasped.

You might be thinking, well, Dave, you're doing the radio ministry.

I don't know what yet tomorrow is and what the ministry is or is not.

I just want to keep on seizing that for which Christ Jesus seized me.

Because there is an ailment in the Christian faith.

What?

Yep, we're going to discuss that when we get back.

There's an ailment that we would do well to fix, and I'm going to talk about that when we return.

But first I'm going to answer the trivia question.

What is the David Spoon experience?

Because what we're getting is this snapshot of Jesus and there's a lot of stuff that we do, a lot of stuff that we say, but at no point should anybody ever lose what's going on here.

And when we get into our Philippians teach tomorrow you're going to see how very specific Christology, the study of Christ fits into play on Jesus Christ being honored above all and understanding how that this snapshot of Jesus plays into or leads us into the understanding of the superiority of Christ.

Nobody else was fully God and fully man, period.

And so nobody else can represent God to man or man to God.

So in this situation we get to see the Darius he has a 12 year old daughter, she's dying.

Not good news.

This woman who's got this bleeding issue, issue of blood, she comes up to Jesus, touches him without saying anything.

Jesus has restoration and healing for her in physical, social and psychological aspects.

Which is just wonderful if you think about how Jesus, Jesus cares about the whole person.

He doesn't care about a part of a person, cares about every inch of you.

If you're doing well physically but you're not doing well psychologically, Jesus cares about that.

If you're doing well psychologically and not doing well physically, Jesus cares about that.

If you can't have contact with people and you feel like you're completely isolated, Jesus cares about that.

In the meantime, we're going back to our text, and this is what I want you to get.

We want to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of you.

Did he take hold of you for salvation?

Yes.

Did he take hold of you so you could fellowship with him forever?

Yes.

Did he take hold of you so that you can enjoy eternity and that.

That's a deep part of the power of your hope that's referenced in the New Testament.

Yes.

But he also has taken hold of you personally because there is something he has or sees in you or has placed in you that is beneficial for others.

The problem that Christians have, the malady that Christians have, is that we think you get to a point, and then you're like, okay, well, I've pretty much done everything that I think I'm supposed to do or can do in the kingdom.

So here's the problem.

The problem is the Lord doesn't like the idea of us stopping.

Exodus 14, 10, 15.

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians marching after them.

So I do want to set the stage.

Israel leaves, right?

Everything's fine.

The Egyptians kicked them out.

But then Pharaoh's like, what do we do?

We just lost all our slaves.

They sent the army after them.

Israel is there.

They're looking, and they can see the hills, they can see the mountains.

They can see coming.

An army is coming against them.

So when it says Pharaoh approached, Israel looked up, and there were the Egyptians marching after them.

There, they're coming.

They're coming, people.

They were terrified and cried out to the Lord.

They said to Moses, was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?

What have you done by bringing us out of Egypt?

Verse 12.

Didn't we say to you in Egypt, let us alone.

Let us serve the Egyptians.

It would be better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert.

Moses answered the people, do not be afraid.

Stand firm, and you will see the deliverance of the Lord that he will bring you today.

The Egyptians you see today, you will never see again.

The Lord will fight for you.

You only need to be still.

Then the Lord said to Moses, why are you crying out?

Tell the Israelites to move on.

And you're thinking, wait a minute.

What does that got to do with anything?

It has a lot to do with things.

Because what happens is we get to a point where either through fear or something else, we are like, well, we're far enough.

We've gone far enough.

No, you haven't.

Keep going.

But you understand, Dave, for me to keep going, there's this big body of water.

Keep going.

This idea of mediocrity is not acceptable.

That comes from the Latin word, from climbing up a hill.

And halfway up a hill, there's a stopping point, and the person climbing up the hill stops and doesn't climb any farther.

That's where mediocrity comes from.

That's where the word comes from.

Going up half a hill.

And we can't be like that.

We can't be Christians who are like, that's enough.

You know who will tell you it's enough?

God will tell you it's enough.

God will let you know when it's enough.

Until then, you keep going forward.

But, Dave, there's obstacles.

I can't do this.

I have to get a high education to be a minister.

Really, I'll have to tell that to John and to Peter and to James and to Andrew, who Were fishermen.

They were common laborers.

That was a very skilled use of their labor, but they were laborers, not academics.

Well, you don't understand.

I can't speak.

Well, gee, doesn't that sound a lot like Moses?

Well, I'm afraid.

I understand you're afraid.

That's why God says, Moses said, don't be afraid.

Make the decision not to be afraid.

You think you're done.

You're done when God says you're done.

But, Dave, I go to work, I do this.

I do this.

You are a walking billboard for the Kingdom of God.

Everywhere you go, you are an ambassador.

You don't stop being an ambassador because you go to the store.

You don't stop being an ambassador because you meet with tea, with somebody you know.

You never stop being an ambassador.

You don't.

Well, I'm going to take my ambassador hat off me.

No, we never stop.

We don't stop.

But it's mighty water.

We can't get in.

If we just stayed where we were, everything would be comfy.

You mean like Peter?

If he had stayed in the boat because he didn't have the willingness to take one leg and put it over the side.

But I can't do this.

Ministry says way past me.

Yep, it sure is.

Isn't it great that you can't do it?

Apart from a partnership with God and through Christ, you can do anything.

What's the point of me bringing this up?

Stop limiting yourself.

Stop boxing yourself in.

Stop boxing God in.

You don't have to have this phenomenal international ministry to be ministering in the Kingdom of God.

In fact, if everybody had an international ministry that reached billions of people, I mean, just think about how silly that is.

You have a group that you connect with in some capacity, minister within that group, present your same thing we say.

Our DNA.

Always being ready, always being aware.

You gotta take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of you.

When he's done with you, he'll pull you up.

But until he pulls you up, he's not done.

And there's more to do.

You think, well, how do you know there's more to do?

Because he's not back yet.

That's how we know.

And so there's things we gotta, like get a hand on.

One of the things.

I want to say this.

I really do want to say this.

And I don't want you to get offended at this.

I just want you to listen to what I'm going to say because it's superbly important.

Many of you out there, I'm Too old.

I can't do anything.

Exodus 7:7.

Moses was 80 years old and Aaron was 83.

When they spoke to Pharaoh, they didn't even get into ministry to the last third of their lives.

Moses went early when he was 40.

Somebody died, maybe premature ministry for him.

Do you see what I'm saying?

You're not too old.

You have to find out that for which Jesus Christ took hold of you.

So I want you to stop with the excuses, stop with mediocrity, stop with this whole thing.

When we come back, we're going to talk about the reality.

This is a journey of faith.

And faith is something we walk with that is not the same as sight.

Right?

I'm not going to do an over overriding teaching that will make the Baptist or the Church of Christ proud.

So neither one of you groups can be all excited about this because that's not the purpose of this.

Here's where we're picking it up.

As verse 34 ends Eunuch, the eunuch asks Philip, what was Isaiah talking about himself or someone else?

Verse 35 from Acts chapter nine or chapter eight, says Philip, says Philip began with the same scripture and then began to tell him about the good news about Jesus.

As they rode along, they came to some water and the eunuch said, look, there is some water.

Why can't I be baptized?

So let's just stop right there.

When Philip was explaining the gospel to the eunuch, he had to include the understandings or the teachings of baptism or the eunuch never would have said, why can't I be baptized?

He never would have said it never would have come up unless Philip had brought that information to light in multiple translations.

It then says, you can.

Philip answered, if you believe with all your heart.

And the eunuch replied, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

This is often known as believer's baptism.

Some texts will show this in the footnote.

I disagree that it should be reduced to the footnote.

I think it's a part of the text.

I would not fellowship with you over that.

I just think it is a part of the text because he asks a very pointed question.

And in this exchange, Philip is giving a very pointed answer.

So he's like, well, there's some water.

I want to be baptized.

I want to respond to the gospel.

I want to say yes.

And Philip responds by saying, you can, you can get baptized.

As long as you believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, you can be baptized.

Now, why that's important is because this is the difference between many different groups about who can be baptized.

Some people think, well, a child can be baptized, yeah, but a child can't believe in Jesus.

So then how can a child be baptized?

That's the argument.

Okay, those, again, those are not fellowship issues.

Those are disagreements.

You know, we spent.

I spent 10 minutes talking about understanding who's got the spirit of God and who doesn't have the spirit of God.

When you have a difference of application of scripture, that person's not an evil person.

They're not some kind of demonic whatever.

They see something different than you.

Okay?

They're genuinely in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

The blood of Jesus Christ is what redeems us.

They are acknowledging their heavenly father, praying, our Father, who art thou in heaven.

They drink of the same holy Spirit.

They come to a different conclusion.

Yeah.

What else is new?

I think that's an important part of carrying one another's burdens and so fulfilling the law of Christ.

According to Galatians 6.

Two, Paul said, join me in my struggle by praying for me.

And these are all connected.

Jesus said, a new commandment, I give you.

Love one another as I have loved you.

Those are all working together.

Now.

I want to go back to this and I want to challenge you.

And I know that some people are hearing this message going, dave, I'm too old.

And it's like, no, you're not.

You can't tell me you're too old to pray.

And you say, well, I do pray.

I pray, you know, do my devotions.

You know what?

Start praying for different ministries at a separated time from your devotions as part of your ministry.

Thinking.

Really?

Yeah.

Send out one encouraging email a day.

Send out one encouraging text, make one encouraging call.

All of those are forms of ministry.

So you can't say to your children, if you're too old to do it, then if you're not physically able to do it, that's different.

And you can still pray.

You can't tell.

You can't pray.

Nobody can stop you from praying.

And there are a myriad of ministries and people and countries and governments and different situations that need prayer.

You can spend a good 10 minutes praying every day just for the Largest growing segment of Christians in the world, which is in Iran.

You spend just five minutes a day praying for that.

Or if they stand in faith, they get executed.

You could be praying for other Christians.

There you go.

Whole ministry.

So I'm just separating you from the.

I can't.

You can too.

Don't be satisfied with the I've done enough.

God will tell you when you've done enough.

Not you.

He'll.

He'll ring your bell, ding, ding, ding.

And when he does, he does.

But until then, you know, even Jesus after he resurrected.

I just want to point this out.

So this is what I'm trying to get at.

I'm just trying to drive home a very particular point.

Okay.

All right, here's the point.

God has put something in you.

He didn't put it in you by accident.

What happens is we get afraid.

We all know the story on Matthew 14.

Jesus said, Take courage to tie.

Don't be afraid.

Just talked about this the other day, Lord, if a Jew, Peter said, tell me to come on the water.

Jesus says, come.

Jesus never says, don't do it.

It's always like, get out of the boat.

It's always like, try.

Give it an opportunity.

Try.

I mean, even Jonathan told his assistant, he said, it doesn't matter if the Lord saves by many or by few.

Let's give it a shot.

Just give it a shot.

It's like, I know that's crazy, but you would be amazed that that has a big part to do with this radio ministry I'm in right now.

I had to give it a shot at 50 years old, never really having done it the way that we do it now, and just gave it a shot.

I mean, there is that truth to it and that the Lord had something else in mind.

And then it turns out to be something that's deep inside me.

That's the part I want to get into.

It sounds bizarre.

And I want to be careful because I don't like the new age stuff, as you know.

And I'm not a name it and claim it guy.

As you know.

I'm a Bible believe it Bible, say it Bible function it guy.

It's just not the name it and claim it process.

But in Philippians 2:13, it's very clear.

It says, for God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his purpose.

Just this one verse, and I've taught about it many times, and it's very, very powerful.

And it really does require you and alone time with God.

Listen to the passage.

I'm going to define these things for.

It is God who works in you.

Who's God working in you to will and to act.

What does that mean?

God works in you to will.

To will means to desire that you desire it.

You will it, you want it.

And to act means to perform or to do it.

So God works in you to want it and to do it in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Which means God put in you something he wants you to do that you want to do, and you want to do it because God put it in you.

You don't know that all the time.

It's just that God put it in you.

I really want to.

I want to teach more, I want to encourage more.

I want to do this more.

I want to be whatever it might be.

It could be anything.

I want to be more involved in fellowship or in church or.

I want to be more of a help here or more of a help in this way.

I want to find other ways to help whatever it is.

What I'm trying to tell you is that you didn't even put that inside of you.

God put it inside of you.

See, I have this weird theory.

I know it's.

I got to be careful here, but I think God puts in all of the believers.

I think God puts a.

And that seed has to do with what we want.

And what I think we assume is that you have to do this in order to get that seed germinated.

And it's like, that's so not true.

Did you know I didn't have a master's degree before I did radio?

Did you know I didn't have a doctorate before I did radio?

In fact, I got my master's and doctorate degree here in Texas.

Did you know when I started radio, I didn't have a B.A.

oh, you didn't know that, huh?

Got my B.A.

when I was in San Diego.

I got my B.A.

my master's and my doctorate after I turned 50.

Why?

That's how God set it up.

I didn't.

I don't.

I don't know.

You too old.

I have heard more than once, even from my own relatives, how one of my relatives, very close friend, decided at 58, she wanted to be a lawyer.

She became a lawyer, and she was a lawyer for 10, 12, 14 years.

Loved it.

Was her favorite thing to do.

You don't know.

God puts it in you for a reason.

It's for his glory.

It's not for your glory.

But it's amazing how God puts inside of you this element that you want to do something and he wants you to do it.

Now, that's a partnership with God.

You know, maybe it is leading a Bible study or having a home group or being a part of a ministry you've never tried.

Maybe you've always thought, I wanted to try this, or I want to do this, or I always thought about Doing this.

Maybe it's time for that moment where you just talk to the Lord and say, there's something I can do.

I want to try and do it.

I want to connect to it.

Now, you don't do it in your own power.

You don't make it happen in spite of you.

Don't say, that's not.

You could do this in partnership with God.

And what I'm trying to say is for many people, it's like the children of Israel at the waters.

We're going to die out here.

We're not going forward.

There's a big body of water in front of me.

Hey, God can make a way through the water.

God can help you walk on top of the water.

It's always funny how water is involved.

God is not done.

You'll know when he's done.

There won't be any question in your mind or heart that do to do that comes from the Lord.

Do, do, do.

You'll know, but you haven't heard it yet.

And so my encouragement is for you to really pursue that.

Now, I do have the practical advice.

I want to be very careful here because I want to stay away from bizarreness here.

I just want to.

There's two questions that you can ask and then we're going to drop it on the Proverbs 3 text.

But if God gave you a do over, what would you do?

Now that's a great question because it simply asks you, if you could just do the whole thing over where you're at right now, what would you do?

And then this, I think is a great follow up question.

And if you were going to do a do over, what would you do if money were no object, like if money wasn't the stopper?

And the reason that I bring it up is because you can be in partnership with God doing the very thing God put in your heart to do.

But you can only do it if you keep going forward in the journey.

You can't stop.

You can't shut her down.

You can't do that by faith.

Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

Abraham went, not knowing, but he went in faith.

I was like, yes, but I have to have all my ducks in a row.

I have to have everything ordered.

I wonder if that's the guy that was in the Garden of Gerasenes when Jesus cast the spirit, the legion out of him.

I wonder if that guy thought, I have to have all my ducks in order before I go tell people.

Because Jesus said, go tell.

Just go tell them, you'll see.

By faith, Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as an inheritance, obeyed and went.

Even though he did not know where he was going, he didn't have a clue.

By faith, he made his home in the promised land.

Like a stranger in a foreign country.

He lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.

He was looking forward to the city with foundation, whose architect and builder is God.

You don't always know where it's going to go.

You don't always know how it's going to break down.

You don't always know how that water is going to seem when you step out of the boat.

You don't always know how you're going to get through the water.

You don't always know that.

But you step in faith, and when the priest's feet hit the water, it split so that the nation could walk across.

Sometimes the Lord is just waiting for you and I to move forward.

Get out of our little box.

Proverbs 3, 5, 6.

We live by this, don't we?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding and all your ways.

Submit to him.

He'll make your paths straight.

Doesn't that mean that our understanding is not supposed to be the guiding light, but that we're supposed to trust Him?

We're not supposed to lean on our own thought process.

In fact, we're supposed to trust him with all of our heart, which has to do with the emotions.

Because you know what, it feels very fearful.

Hey, here's a message.

Don't be afraid.

That's what we're told.

In fact, that's what Moses told Israel.

Do not be afraid.

Stand firm.

You're going to see the hand of the Lord.

All I'm trying to do is encourage you to present yourself to the Lord.

If the Lord doesn't want to do anything, then he doesn't want to do anything.

I would find that unique.

But that doesn't mean you know I'm right.

Not every single individual, but there are many of you that have this deep desire to do more.

And the fact that you have that tells you there's more to do.

The fact that that desire, that's part of what I'm talking about.

It's that Philippians 2:13.

The fact that you want to do more, that's the seed in you that is pushing for the want.

And now you have to act on it.

You got to do it in faith.

You won't do it perfectly.

You should have people praying for you.

But you should make yourself available and tell the Lord, you know what?

If you do want me to go forward in something, I want to be ready.

And what do you got to say to be ready?

Here am I, Lord, here am I.

Presenting yourself before the Lord.

You know, that's how new ministries get started all the time.

Maybe you'll just be a part of a group that prays for a new ministry.

I don't know.

I just know that God's not on the throne, going, well, I'm not doing anything else.

The Lord.

Revelation 21:5, Behold, I make all things new.

He's not done.

He'll let you know.

He didn't let you know yet.
