Transcripts

Xhafer:

Hello and welcome to Who Are You?

Xhafer:

This is a Babylon five watch cast hosted by two former strangers.

Xhafer:

Now, friends who've gotten to know each other while re-watching a favorite

Xhafer:

show from their childhood, Babylon.

Xhafer:

Five.

Xhafer:

I'm Jaire.

Laura:

And I'm Laura.

Xhafer:

And today, Laura, I'm gonna ask you who or what, or,

Xhafer:

or, or where, I guess is the one.

Xhafer:

So if this is your first time hearing this this is a bit we do in our season

Xhafer:

recap episodes where we'll ask each other what is the one thing right now uh, we

Xhafer:

do it for seasons of the show but you know, we ran outta big stuff to talk

Xhafer:

about, so we're getting to know each other through some of the smaller things now.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

So I gotta ask you, Laura what is a recent band or album?

Xhafer:

The one.

Xhafer:

Recent band or album that you've just been jamming to?

Laura:

Well, I am famously a late bloomer when it comes to like popular music.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

I don't get into something until like years after.

Laura:

It's been well established.

Laura:

And uh, popular in the, in the zeitgeist.

Laura:

Stephen.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

My husband makes fun of me cuz I'm like so behind I'll be

Laura:

like, oh, this is a cool song.

Laura:

It's the first time I heard it, it's really new.

Laura:

And he's like, no, this is from like 10 years ago.

Laura:

You know?

Laura:

So I'm always really behind.

Laura:

I think the most recent band that I've been consistently

Laura:

jamming to is Panic at the Disco.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

I really like Brendan Yuri's voice.

Laura:

Is it, it's Brendan, right?

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

Uh, I really enjoy his voice.

Laura:

He seems very classically trained.

Laura:

Incredibly talented.

Laura:

I think I saw a video, maybe it was for Jimmy Fallon, the night

Laura:

show where he did, like, during the quarantine, he did a song.

Laura:

Of theirs maybe, and played all of the instruments

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

in it and did all of the voice parts by himself and like

Laura:

recorded every single thing.

Laura:

It was amazing.

Laura:

He's just an incredibly talented person.

Laura:

Uh

Xhafer:

Album that's really good.

Xhafer:

If you haven't listened to that yet.

Laura:

oh.

Laura:

I don't think I have, I'll have to look that up now.

Xhafer:

It's from like maybe five, six years ago, I wanna say.

Laura:

I'm a little late to it, but better late than never.

Laura:

Right?

Xhafer:

Yeah, for sure.

Laura:

What about you?

Laura:

What's an album or band?

Laura:

That's your jam.

Xhafer:

I've got two albums that I've been listening to a bunch lately.

Xhafer:

I've been listening to Rtj four.

Xhafer:

I run the Jules a ton lately.

Xhafer:

And then I've been listening to, we're all Gonna Live From Daws,

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Because I'm perpetually behind.

Laura:

I have no idea who these people are.

Xhafer:

So Run the Jewels is a rap super group of Killer Mike and lp,

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Lp, I think it's lp, I forget if it's a capital L or not.

Xhafer:

Anyways they are incredible.

Xhafer:

Uh, If you listen to any kind of rap at all.

Xhafer:

They are very, very good.

Xhafer:

They are very clever and very funny, but also very political.

Laura:

Yeah

Xhafer:

Um,

Laura:

go figure.

Laura:

Jaire liking someone who's very political.

Xhafer:

And then Daws, I don't know that Daws has ever been a big band.

Xhafer:

Like I, I feel like you could say run the jewels and outside to a crowd of

Xhafer:

10 people and you'll get four or five people who know who run the JUULs are.

Xhafer:

Das is, I don't think a band like that.

Xhafer:

They're not small by any means.

Xhafer:

I mean, they tour the country and do the thing and have a ton of albums.

Xhafer:

We're all gonna live is their live album that they did from

Xhafer:

their tour, from the album.

Xhafer:

We're all gonna die.

Xhafer:

So it's a fun little pun.

Xhafer:

We're all gonna

Laura:

I like that.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And it's got, it's kind of like a greatest hits for them

Xhafer:

from their first couple of albums.

Xhafer:

I do like their more recent stuff as well.

Xhafer:

It's just that album has always just been, I don't know.

Xhafer:

It's one of those albums that I will come back to every couple of years

Xhafer:

and listen to a ton for like a month,

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

there right now.

Laura:

Yeah, I do that too.

Laura:

Like I'll get just kind of stuck on an album for a while.

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

Then I kind of associate it with like a time in my life sometimes

Laura:

about things that were happening.

Xhafer:

I have a set of numerical playlists on Spotify that's just like

Xhafer:

playlist one, playlist two, playlist three, like, and I'm on 30 right

Xhafer:

now, and these go back 20 years.

Laura:

dang

Xhafer:

And so I have kind of like these capstones where it's like,

Xhafer:

this was my podcast at this time, or no, they're not in my podcast,

Xhafer:

but my playlist at this time.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Just instantly transport.

Xhafer:

I can throw one on from like, I have like playlists that I turned

Xhafer:

into burn CDs to listen to in the car in high school still and stuff.

Xhafer:

So I can like just put on, you know, some of that stuff and just be instantly

Xhafer:

transported back to riding shotgun in my best friend's car on the way to school.

Xhafer:

Or certain parts of college or travel, you know, like whenever I

Xhafer:

hear Youth without Youth by Metric.

Xhafer:

I remember flying over Lake Michigan on a work trip, cuz that was the

Xhafer:

first time I heard that song.

Xhafer:

So I, I totally vibe with that.

Xhafer:

I have a lot of musical ties to specific experiences or times of my life.

Laura:

Yeah, it's amazing the feelings that you'll have drugged back up

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

from, just from those songs or just from that album?

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

It's very interesting.

Laura:

I'm sure there's a psychology paper about it or something.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Well, I would like to know what is the one best app that you've been

Laura:

using, like on your phone or a tablet or something to make your life

Laura:

easier or that you've been enjoying?

Xhafer:

I recently set up my own Jelly Fin Media box.

Laura:

Oh, tell me what this is.

Xhafer:

It's basically my own in-house streaming service.

Laura:

Oh, I think you were telling me about this last week.

Laura:

Off pod.

Xhafer:

Yes, because I, right now it is closed network.

Xhafer:

It's only available in my house, but I do have the intention of putting it on

Xhafer:

a outside network at some point so that you can watch Third Space and in the

Xhafer:

beginning and crusade and all of these things that you just, you don't have

Xhafer:

access to anymore from Babylon five.

Laura:

I think some of the movies might be available on iTunes,

Laura:

but I'm not sure about Crusade.

Xhafer:

Lost Tales is available on Voodoo, but that's it.

Xhafer:

. Some of this stuff's really hard to come by and uh, Honestly, it was uh, talking

Xhafer:

to yum yum about their DVD backups and stuff, and I'm just all like, I want

Xhafer:

that, but I hate physical me, like I hate moving physical media around.

Xhafer:

But I have digital backups of like every D V D that I owned for a very long

Xhafer:

time which ended up being fortuitous because my D V D collection got, went

Xhafer:

missing in college at some point.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

So I do have like backups of all these things that I've purchased that

Xhafer:

are shows that you just can't get anymore or at least couldn't get for a while.

Xhafer:

Clone High was like one of the things I would go back to and watch back before

Xhafer:

that was readily available again.

Xhafer:

so yeah, that's probably the top of my list right now because it's getting

Xhafer:

a ton of use and I'm watching random odds and ends that I have saved that

Xhafer:

just you can't get streaming anymore.

Laura:

Sounds very useful.

Laura:

So,

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

How about you?

Laura:

Speaking of useful, I guess I probably get the most

Laura:

use out of the Notability app.

Xhafer:

I'm not familiar.

Laura:

with this one.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

It's, you know, it's just a notes taking app, but it has lots of like

Laura:

options for different templates.

Laura:

You know, you can have your ruled paper, you can have your grid paper,

Laura:

you can have a planner, or you can have recipe cards, like lots of

Laura:

different options for taking notes.

Laura:

You can either write it and have it transformed into type text, or

Laura:

you can just write if you prefer.

Laura:

I do a lot of writing in different colors when I'm taking notes, especially

Laura:

for our show because it'll, it'll make a, a joke stand out within.

Laura:

The text of just what's happening in the scene or, you know, it just, it helps

Laura:

my brain process stuff to use different colors while I'm taking my notes.

Laura:

I remember stuff a lot better.

Laura:

I don't know why that is.

Laura:

There's probably another psychology paper about that one.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I mean, I'm glad you got something that works for you.

Xhafer:

I used I tab, I indent a lot in my notes,

Laura:

Uhhuh?

Laura:

Yeah, me too.

Xhafer:

like my default on my handwritten notes is tabbed in twice

Xhafer:

so that I could go back and do stuff and make notes in that margin space.

Laura:

That's smart.

Xhafer:

All right, so I mentioned Jelly Fin and having the

Xhafer:

media server set up at home.

Xhafer:

Part of that is I've set up a gym downstairs,

Laura:

Ooh.

Xhafer:

so I've got a little like cheapy projector and my old soundbar

Xhafer:

and it's in my basement and I've got some cardio down there set up.

Xhafer:

Got a rower and a bike and I've been spending time, I've been

Xhafer:

trying to get more exercise.

Xhafer:

I have not been able to throw disc off for a couple of weeks

Xhafer:

because I actually tore my bicep.

Laura:

Aw,

Xhafer:

Um,

Laura:

I'm sorry to hear that.

Xhafer:

I'm okay now.

Xhafer:

I could go throw now, but it's been thunderstorming for days.

Xhafer:

And also we have all of the smoke from the wildfires here in Michigan,

Laura:

I have heard about that.

Laura:

I'm so sorry.

Xhafer:

couldn't walk.

Xhafer:

Like I'd put a mask on to walk outside.

Xhafer:

I couldn't see down my street.

Xhafer:

It was so

Laura:

Wild.

Xhafer:

We had some of the worst air quality in the country here for several

Xhafer:

days, and so it healed up just in time for me to not be able to leave my house.

Xhafer:

So this next week probably, but yeah.

Xhafer:

So I've been trying to get workouts downstairs in that gym.

Xhafer:

And Do you have a, like, good TV or movie to just like get on the bike and just

Xhafer:

like watch while you're doing something?

Laura:

That is a great question for me, and this was probably not

Laura:

a useful recommendation to you, but for that particular purpose, like

Laura:

whenever I'm on a treadmill or a bike or something exercising, I usually

Laura:

go with one of the nineties era star treks just because I can kind of.

Laura:

into my, like, feelings of nostalgia and dissociate from

Laura:

being exercising a little bit.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

And it is that, or, you know, if I need a shorter workout session,

Laura:

you know, I'm not gonna wanna go for the full like 45 minutes or whatever.

Laura:

I might do one of the, you know, humorous cartoons, like a lower decks

Laura:

or a, a Futurama or even just like the Simpsons, something I don't necessarily

Laura:

need to like pay attention to.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Laura:

But will like cheer me up enough that I'm not

Laura:

bummed about being exercising.

Xhafer:

So Beth and I have been watching succession while working out,

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

which is like the exact opposite of the thing you're talking about.

Xhafer:

This

Laura:

cuz I hear that one's like intense, right?

Xhafer:

it's intense.

Xhafer:

It's, yeah, it's an H B O drama about rich people and it

Xhafer:

just gets me very frustrated.

Xhafer:

So it's good for working out, I find.

Laura:

Oh yeah.

Laura:

You like get your emotions up a little bit.

Laura:

Have a little like rage exercise.

Xhafer:

For sure.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

That's interesting.

Laura:

So is that your recommendation?

Laura:

Do you think I should try that out or

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I'm, it, it works for me.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Well, I wanna know, so after you've been working out and it, I don't

Laura:

know about in Michigan, but it is hot as hell here in Oklahoma.

Laura:

And it probably will be until October.

Xhafer:

now.

Laura:

Are you serious?

Laura:

There are places in the world where it's like that right now.

Xhafer:

It's, I mean, it's raining, but Yes

Laura:

I'd take it.

Laura:

My man.

Laura:

I'm ready.

Xhafer:

it was the lowest 68 and the highest 77 here today.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

All right.

Laura:

Well, we'll put a pin in that.

Laura:

But if you've been working out, you and you're are hot and sweaty and it's

Laura:

summertime, maybe it's hot outside.

Laura:

I don't know.

Laura:

Um, What is the one best summer drink that you want right now?

Xhafer:

right now I've been going for a gin and tonic,

Laura:

Okay

Xhafer:

splash of lime.

Xhafer:

Nice floral gin, not just like a.

Xhafer:

Tan Ray or a Bombay or something, but something that's got a little

Xhafer:

bit more of a complex flavor profile.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

But when it gets hotter, mojito.

Laura:

Oh yes.

Laura:

I love a mojito.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

A mojito on a hot day.

Xhafer:

Mm.

Xhafer:

The lime and mint.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

That's perfect.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

I would say that, you know, I'm obviously not drinking alcohol for a while

Xhafer:

Yes.

Laura:

at this moment.

Laura:

Uh, Gut reasons for that.

Laura:

But.

Laura:

I really enjoy like an infused water right now, like cucumber or lemon.

Laura:

I actually for most of my life have not been a person who prefers

Laura:

ice in my drinks, but since I was pregnant last year, I really,

Laura:

really want my drink to be cold.

Laura:

So a nice ice cold, like infused water or maybe a lemonade, like uh,

Laura:

but I don't like plain lemonade.

Laura:

I want you to put something in it, like gimme some.

Laura:

Gimme some other flavors,

Laura:

like some strawberries, some raspberry,

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

peach

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

Well it's nice to uh, get to know you a little bit better.

Xhafer:

Uh, we have to figure out and enter the segment at some

Laura:

What's the, I'm trying to segue the one into this episode, and it's so hard.

Xhafer:

Yeah, you can't uh,

Laura:

We'll figure it out one day next time.

Laura:

Stay tuned.

Xhafer:

well, yeah, we'll get there eventually.

Xhafer:

But for right now, we're just gonna go right into season

Xhafer:

four, episode 10, racing Mars.

Xhafer:

We opened in Sheridan's office with supply shortage being the issue.

Xhafer:

Ivana tells uh, John, she's gonna handle dealing with the smugglers

Xhafer:

and then relieves him of duty.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

That's cute.

Xhafer:

He hasn't had a day off in nine months uh, the whole war

Xhafer:

dying, and she's like, you're gonna take a few days while it's quiet.

Xhafer:

He then asks about Steven and Marcus and how, if we've heard

Xhafer:

from them before walking out.

Xhafer:

We go to a cargo freighter where the worst game of ice spy is happening.

Laura:

Yeah, Marcus is still trying to make this trip interesting.

Xhafer:

M for more boxes was pretty good.

Laura:

E E for even more boxes was quite, quite cute,

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And Marcus grabs a dude to theme.

Xhafer:

We get a short introduction to Captain Jack.

Xhafer:

This is Donovan Scott.

Xhafer:

Donovan.

Xhafer:

Scott has had a very successful career playing one person in particular.

Laura:

really?

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

One character in many different forms can

Laura:

Oh yes.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

This a type of person.

Laura:

Got it.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

Tell me which person this is.

Xhafer:

Santa Claus.

Xhafer:

He's got like 19 I M D B credits for playing Santa Claus or

Xhafer:

Santa or Chris Cringle or Mr.

Xhafer:

Winter.

Laura:

How funny.

Laura:

How many of these are on lifetime?

Laura:

I wonder.

Xhafer:

I'm guessing a hand.

Xhafer:

A handful of them looked like made for TV movies.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

That's fun.

Laura:

I mean, he's, he's a very fun bit part in this episode.

Xhafer:

He knows the key to Franklin's heart food.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Franklin is a simple man.

Xhafer:

Marcus tries to put it into this, but yeah, it's like potatoes.

Laura:

To be fair, I would probably have the same reaction to potatoes

Laura:

if I had been eating protein bars for who knows how long.

Xhafer:

So I recently found a YouTube channel.

Xhafer:

Called like Ration swap that takes active military people from different allied

Xhafer:

countries and has them trade rations.

Laura:

Oh, interesting.

Xhafer:

And I can see why like, you know, they're traveling with like

Xhafer:

protein bars and like survival food that they could take a ton of.

Xhafer:

And then he's got like these big old bags and stuff.

Xhafer:

And it reminds me a lot of like the American rations

Xhafer:

compared to the Italian rations.

Laura:

Yeah, I bet European militaries have some significantly

Laura:

better rations than Americans.

Xhafer:

Yeah, the Italian rations are like, here's your

Xhafer:

can of ravioli and stuff, and

Laura:

Uhhuh and your little juice box of wine.

Xhafer:

yeah.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

Well, yes, there's a lot of stuff like that.

Xhafer:

Chocolates with every meal.

Xhafer:

Little stuff like that.

Xhafer:

It's just like, but it's also four times the size of an American ration,

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

so.

Laura:

I could see that.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Captain Jack has the good stuff.

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

Um, But Marcus is not gonna be swayed by food.

Laura:

He's, he's not gonna potentially give up the whole game just because

Laura:

this guy has the good snacks.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

We see Sheridan in his quarters attempting a staycation, so, So he's

Xhafer:

gonna watch some tv, but he only gets one channel and it's Issn and they're just

Xhafer:

repeating their Babylon five broadcast.

Xhafer:

They make a note of it there that it's like for our friends in this sector.

Xhafer:

Another repeat of this broadcast?

Laura:

This is not healthy, right?

Laura:

He needs to go get out Dale or something.

Laura:

This is not a good use of his time.

Xhafer:

He's got a fucking fleet.

Xhafer:

He's got white stars.

Xhafer:

Grab to land, get on a ship, go literally anywhere.

Laura:

Yeah, do not rewatch this.

Laura:

Do not like hate.

Laura:

Watch the Garibaldi interview over and over.

Xhafer:

Yeah, go check out the Rolon home world now that it's

Xhafer:

empty or some shit, I don't know.

Xhafer:

You got options.

Laura:

Yeah, this is a bad choice.

Laura:

Um, and it leads to more bad choices because he goes looking for Mr.

Laura:

Guaraldi.

Xhafer:

Yeah, he Garibaldi makes him look like a real asshole here.

Laura:

Yeah, he played right into his hands.

Laura:

It's kind of unfortunate.

Xhafer:

Sheridan basically tells him his oath never ends.

Xhafer:

And Garibaldis like, fuck you.

Xhafer:

This is the exact kind of reason thing that made me leave.

Xhafer:

They Get into a, a yelling match and uh, after it's over, the camera pans up and we

Xhafer:

see the kiro looking on from a distance.

Laura:

Yeah, I, all of this stuff with Garibaldi really kind of hits a.

Laura:

Really uncomfortable note for me.

Laura:

I'm sure it does for you too, because how much of it are you wondering is sort

Laura:

of like Jerry Doyle's points that he makes later, maybe in some of his uh,

Laura:

work after this.

Xhafer:

I mean, the fact that our one character becomes a conservative talk host

Xhafer:

is also brainwashed, is not lost on me.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Uh, The whole, like in this scene, I think he brings up the freedom of speech.

Laura:

I'm so aren't you fighting for freedom of speech?

Laura:

Like,

Xhafer:

yeah,

Laura:

okay, my dude,

Xhafer:

yeah.

Xhafer:

It seems a little, a little much to be perfectly honest.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Garibaldi doth protest too much.

Xhafer:

yep.

Xhafer:

Captain Jack reveals himself as the resistance contact.

Xhafer:

What the hell is this?

Xhafer:

Passphrase?

Laura:

I know, right?

Xhafer:

Lita had a little vlan.

Xhafer:

This is fucking weird and rude.

Xhafer:

This is incredibly rude to Lita.

Xhafer:

This was upsetting.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Haven't we used Mary had a little lamb in, in something with Telepaths before?

Xhafer:

Did we?

Xhafer:

I don't remember.

Laura:

think we did.

Laura:

I think there was that a scene we're dealing with the

Laura:

resistance, the underground,

Xhafer:

Oh, with Talia forever ago.

Laura:

the, the underground that's trying to escape.

Laura:

I think in there, like repeating, Mary had a little lamb, I think to keep

Laura:

themselves from giving away secrets if they're pressed, like they're gonna just.

Laura:

Use that as their mantra.

Laura:

So maybe, maybe this is kind of calling back to that, cuz we're mentioning Lita.

Laura:

But yeah, this is a weird thing.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I, Ugh, I was kind of just squeaked out by this.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

And anytime you like, use a nursery rhyme in these sort of contexts,

Laura:

it's a little squeaky, right?

Xhafer:

And then like this is your friend

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

She helped you.

Laura:

She was like instrumental.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

You do not win this war without her.

Laura:

Right, right.

Xhafer:

Anyways, captain Jack tells them all their cover story.

Xhafer:

They're a co young married couple on their honeymoon, and Marcus is

Xhafer:

just fucking delighted about this.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

This is, I, I like that we're not playing this, cuz this was the nineties, right?

Laura:

This could have been played as ew gross.

Xhafer:

Someone actually asked JMS about this.

Xhafer:

I talk, I remind me to not talk about this again later cuz it's in my notes later.

Xhafer:

But he's just like, once humanity found aliens, something as trivial

Xhafer:

as sexual orientation, as a way to other just stopped being a concern.

Xhafer:

It's just not an issue for humanity in the future.

Xhafer:

And I'm all like, cool.

Xhafer:

I'm glad it's not an issue for humanity in the future.

Xhafer:

And I unfortunately have to nod my head and agree that it's probably because

Xhafer:

it's a lot easier to other, when there's aliens and to stop doing it with humans.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

This is a real big huh moment.

Laura:

Considering some of the recent events revolving the Supreme Court.

Xhafer:

The uh,

Laura:

Huh?

Xhafer:

I don't want to talk about it.

Laura:

I'm just gonna use your classic affair.

Xhafer:

fair.

Xhafer:

Go for it, huh?

Laura:

Yeah, this is real cute.

Laura:

I was, couldn't decide if I was disappointed or impressed that we didn't

Laura:

get the, like obligatory scene you probably would've gotten in the nineties

Laura:

media at this point of them, like trying to sell it to someone like at the hotel

Laura:

or, you know security somewhere on Mars.

Laura:

These identities as married people.

Laura:

I was like, am I disappointed that I don't get to see it?

Xhafer:

It's not a thing because it's not a thing.

Laura:

Yeah, no, I mean, trying to sell themselves as

Laura:

someone else, like as these married people, not that, yeah.

Laura:

That they had to sell, like

Xhafer:

Yeah, I

Laura:

being gay as unusual.

Laura:

The two of them being a couple, when they have their past that we know all about,

Xhafer:

They have a lot of fun with it.

Xhafer:

I'm sure.

Xhafer:

I'm sure.

Xhafer:

the actors had a lot of fun with it too.

Xhafer:

I'm sure that was a lot of fun on set.

Xhafer:

After this Gar Baldy, can't remember if it's Monday, so he can fall apart Tuesday.

Xhafer:

Wednesday breakers are actually, now that we get a better look

Xhafer:

at these guys, they really have a whole Smith's thing going on.

Laura:

See, I think of them as Depeche mode.

Laura:

They certainly have a look though, don't they?

Laura:

They are not inconspicuous on this station.

Laura:

They should really work on that.

Laura:

They've got a strong brand.

Xhafer:

yeah.

Xhafer:

Night Watch 2.0 here tries to get Garibaldi to sign up and

Xhafer:

he might be pissed at John, but he's not about to sell him out.

Laura:

Yet?

Xhafer:

After this Captain Jack relays some rumors about Babylon

Xhafer:

five to Marcus and Franklin.

Xhafer:

Including them simultaneously being conquerors of Mars.

Xhafer:

And also, fuck it.

Xhafer:

We're just leaving the resistance alone.

Laura:

I like that.

Laura:

I got my confirmation that yes.

Laura:

Pretty much the solar system, our solar system does not know about the shadow

Laura:

war.

Laura:

we had, I think two episodes ago maybe I had asked, do they know, and it's

Laura:

confirmed canon here that no, they do not.

Xhafer:

Captain Jack's like, what war?

Xhafer:

We don't get P 10 on Mars.

Xhafer:

We do get some good fun between Marcus and Franklin here.

Xhafer:

back on the station.

Xhafer:

Ivanova meets with smugglers in an attempt to get them to go legit.

Xhafer:

She offers them fighter escorts, maintenance fuel, fuel costs, repairs,

Xhafer:

and also not getting blown up by Babylon.

Xhafer:

Five.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

Speaking of good fun, Ivo is good fun in this scene.

Laura:

I love that she specifically lists their crimes and touches each of them when

Laura:

discussing their crimes and their like.

Laura:

What they're wanted for specifically by earth gov.

Laura:

She's very good at making it clear that they really should consider

Laura:

this opportunity very seriously.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

When they're going through stuff, one of them asks when they're talking about

Xhafer:

the clean slate, one of them's all like, does that include for that shipment

Xhafer:

that made Garibaldi lose his hair?

Laura:

I, I'm a little disappointed that we had to like, give an

Laura:

explanation for why Garibaldi went bald.

Laura:

I mean, can't a man just go bald?

Xhafer:

I mean, he was clearly on his way there, but it, this is

Laura:

Yes.

Xhafer:

Captain Jack takes Franklin and Marcus through some old minds

Xhafer:

to meet with the resistance leaders when they get got to commercial.

Xhafer:

Uh, When we come back, we find out that these people are the

Xhafer:

resistance and are checking them out.

Xhafer:

We find out the Texas Rangers are still culturally relevant somehow.

Laura:

Of course, if anyone's going to be standing the test of time, it's

Laura:

gonna be those Texas Rangers, right?

Xhafer:

for sure.

Xhafer:

Uh, We get number two here, played by Clayton Landy.

Xhafer:

He's real that guy.

Xhafer:

And he gives Marcus shit for his Mumbai war Pike.

Xhafer:

He says there's two types of people, the suspicious and the dead.

Xhafer:

I initially read this as the only people that survive.

Xhafer:

Are the people who cast suspicion not are suspicious themselves.

Laura:

Oh yeah.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

And I'm just all like, wait a minute, that doesn't make sense.

Xhafer:

You, those are the people that would get, wait, wait.

Xhafer:

No.

Xhafer:

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

Xhafer:

Like my brain, like had to go on a whole trip for that

Laura:

it's kind of a, a survival of the fittest thing.

Laura:

He, he's point that he's making.

Xhafer:

I got there.

Xhafer:

It just took time.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Transmissions are being jammed all over the place.

Xhafer:

So it's going to be a long time to verify their IDs and make

Xhafer:

sure that they're not assassins.

Laura:

Yeah, because they've had rumors that there might

Laura:

be assassins on their way.

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Laura:

Hmm.

Xhafer:

Delin goes to John and talks him through his encounter with Garibaldi.

Xhafer:

She notes he's got the day, so, hey, maybe one of these memoir

Xhafer:

recording rituals we can get through.

Xhafer:

He's like,

Xhafer:

how many are there?

Laura:

well, now it's time for the sex ritual.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yes.

Xhafer:

The ritual of discovering each other's pleasure centers.

Laura:

Maybe the threshold

Laura:

even.

Xhafer:

yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Once he finds out it's the booty call ritual, he's in,

Laura:

Yeah, he's down.

Xhafer:

Back on Mars.

Xhafer:

Captain Jack shows Franklin a picture of his daughter.

Xhafer:

Creep Fest McGee here is just like, she's gorgeous.

Xhafer:

Just turned 18 two days ago.

Xhafer:

Uh,

Laura:

I wouldn't be handing this to Franklin.

Xhafer:

right.

Xhafer:

It's like,

Laura:

Here's her address.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Oh boy.

Xhafer:

captain Jack mentioned it's come again from Dana four.

Xhafer:

When number two marches in there, I de cards are bunk and

Xhafer:

he thinks they're assassins.

Xhafer:

Number one jumps in.

Xhafer:

As Jack starts pulling at his shoulder and backs off Franklin

Xhafer:

notices something going is going on.

Xhafer:

He saves number one as Marcus shoots the keeper off of Captain Jack's shoulder.

Laura:

Yeah, he's got one of them little aliens.

Laura:

Like poor, poor Regent Verini.

Xhafer:

Franklin does get a chance to perform an autopsy on the keeper, and

Xhafer:

due to its biology is able to determine its basic function controlling the host.

Xhafer:

Franklin notes some of his erratic behaviors along with

Xhafer:

Jack trying to warn them without being able to tell them directly.

Xhafer:

Jack escaped and has taken a grenade with him.

Xhafer:

Number one calls him and Jack explains that they always grow back and he

Xhafer:

blows himself up rather than give himself up to its control again.

Laura:

That.

Laura:

Is a very key point, isn't it?

Laura:

That They always grow back.

Laura:

Hmm.

Laura:

Seems like it could be a problem.

Xhafer:

Over on the station Garibaldi finishes a deal with Anthony Keis as

Xhafer:

Sheridan comes back in to apologize as a preki, comes up and asks for a blessing.

Laura:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

JMS noted on using that, that he got a little

Xhafer:

flack for the he's not the pope.

Xhafer:

He looks nothing like her line.

Laura:

My husband immediately said, that'll never happen.

Laura:

He's like, they'll never let that happen.

Laura:

I was like, okay,

Xhafer:

Maybe in

Laura:

you're probably not wrong.

Laura:

Right, right.

Xhafer:

He ends up punching Sheridan in the apology Does not work out.

Laura:

Important question for you.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Do you think Depeche Mode set this up?

Xhafer:

Oh, a hundred percent.

Xhafer:

A hundred percent.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

They paid this

Xhafer:

yeah.

Xhafer:

this

Xhafer:

is Morris's work.

Xhafer:

Hands down.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Xhafer:

So Sheridan is all worked up now and goes to Delen quarters

Laura:

Uhhuh

Xhafer:

to find a, a bunch of mumbar there.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

you're all worked up.

Laura:

You just had a fight with your best buddy.

Laura:

It's all over.

Laura:

Need to need to get some feelings out.

Laura:

Go see your girlfriend and she's got a bunch of people over,

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

They're there

Xhafer:

for the sex show.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Laura:

a bunch of relatives.

Xhafer:

Oh,

Xhafer:

no thanks.

Laura:

Mumbar.

Laura:

Just know how to kill the fun outta anything, don't they?

Xhafer:

Just like to watch, right?

Xhafer:

It's their

Laura:

I mean, maybe it is more fun for them.

Laura:

I don't know.

Xhafer:

After the sex Sheridan shares an elevator with Lanier

Xhafer:

who gives him shit for exclaiming.

Xhafer:

Woo-hoo.

Xhafer:

At some point,

Laura:

I would say this is some very deserved shit.

Xhafer:

Sheridan Canonically has the worst pillow talk of Eddie character in Babylon.

Xhafer:

Five.

Laura:

For real.

Laura:

Woohoo.

Xhafer:

Woohoo.

Laura:

No, that'd be, and inside I'd be like, and this is over.

Xhafer:

It was a good run.

Xhafer:

It's done now.

Xhafer:

Back on Mars Marcus Bros.

Xhafer:

Out and dips out.

Xhafer:

So, Franklin and number one can have dinner together Over on the station,

Xhafer:

there's a light that never goes out as the Smiths roll up on Garibaldi.

Xhafer:

Who hopes that a Doubledecker bus hits Sheridan.

Xhafer:

He signs up to credits.

Laura:

Uh, yep.

Xhafer:

All right.

Xhafer:

Or how do you feel about this one?

Laura:

You know, I had a little more fun with this one than the last one.

Laura:

I love Mars.

Laura:

I love anytime we're doing something on Mars.

Laura:

I don't know why.

Laura:

It's just, Intriguing to me.

Laura:

I love that we got some more lore about the keeper.

Laura:

Very, very interested in those keepers.

Laura:

Ratcheting the stakes up a little bit too with them in that we've

Laura:

been told they always grow back.

Laura:

Seems problematic.

Xhafer:

Seems like an issue.

Laura:

I don't love where we're going with sending Franklin off with number one.

Laura:

I feel like I.

Laura:

That could get a little more Franklin Romancey not into it.

Laura:

But I think overall, you know, whereas last episode I was, you know, ready to

Laura:

give it a two until I was charmed into it.

Laura:

For me, this is a solid episode of Babylon five.

Laura:

Like it's a, it's definitely a solid three for me, just that

Laura:

it's kind of on that average.

Laura:

But it's doing all the things that I love from Babylon five.

Xhafer:

For sure.

Laura:

What about you?

Laura:

What do you think?

Xhafer:

I'm right there.

Xhafer:

I put this as a uh, four out of five.

Xhafer:

And

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Maybe I should bump this to three and a half.

Laura:

I don't know,

Xhafer:

It's a really good episode, but it is not an episode that I would ever

Xhafer:

watch outside of a full series rewatch.

Laura:

Oh yeah.

Laura:

There's so much that's continuous,

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

It's, you've gotta use it in the context of everything that's around

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

So it, yeah, it definitely exists where it's supposed to exist and.

Xhafer:

Couldn't do anything else, and I didn't, like I said, it's not one that I'd ever

Xhafer:

just like, oh, I'm gonna throw that episode on, but it is a very good episode.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Even the stuff with uh, Sheridan and Garibaldi that I don't love the conflict

Laura:

between Sheridan and Garibaldi cause I don't wanna see my friends fighting.

Laura:

But it is very well done and it does what it's supposed to do.

Laura:

It makes you

Xhafer:

Mm-hmm.

Xhafer:

All right, well next time we've got season four, episode 11, lines of Communication.

Xhafer:

Delen meets the DRS for the first time.

Laura:

Hmm.

Xhafer:

Earth continues to report propaganda about Babylon five, but

Xhafer:

Sheridan prepares a counter attack.

Xhafer:

Franklin and Marcus rallies support on Mars.

Xhafer:

Delen gives sad news to Sheridan.

Laura:

That's a lot of things again.

Xhafer:

Ah, it's a lot.

Xhafer:

The DRock are a big deal, so.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I didn't know we were going to encounter them so soon.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:
